OCR03249 - Super Castlevania IV "The Harbinger of Death"
Nostalvania replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Really nice mix of orchestral and electronic elements. The arrangement is actually pretty varied, there is a lot going on, which demands the attention of the listener. That tempo change at 1:52 was very well done, i had to listen a few times to be really sure, ha ha. That part from 2:08 - 2:35 was great too, although i noticed a bit a lack of bass in that section, but no big deal. Nice take on one of the less popular sources, with spooky sounds, a detailed soundscape and tight production that makes you want to repeatedly hit the play button. -
I was browsing in some of my old project folders and i found this Zelda piano remix attempt of Sheik's and Zelda's theme (and also Item catch, Lost woods at the end) i made about 3 years ago. I think i was experimenting with different harmonies and stuff. https://app.box.com/s/t1k8zacbc3lnnl04tllzhp0sqbhjal7i I don't know if i'll ever continue with this (probably not), but i thought i'd share it here, maybe someone likes it -Markus

OCR03256 - Super Mario Land "Seven Pipes to Heaven"
Nostalvania replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm really glad to see this one on the site, thanks everyone! Yes it's true, the arrangement is quite liberal due to original writing and soloing, and my time stamping was in fact a bit inaccurate. Sorry judges Next time it's gonna be better, at least regarding the timestamping. @ timaeus222: And there will be lots of reharmonized chords and irregular time sigs, muah ha ha! -
OCR02770 - Castlevania II "Tears of Blood"
Nostalvania replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Joshua Morse and EDM, that combination works just perfectly. Great harmonies and groove as usual, i especially like the part from 2:51 - 3:07 with the acoustic piano chords, IMO that specific section could be a bit longer, because it's so damn tasty! -
Yeah, i noticed the double tracking. I was mainly talking about the sound of the piano(s).
-
To me it sounds kinda like there are 2 pianos playing at the same time, i dunno if that was intentional? say, did you use two different piano samples/sounds, or am i crazy? IMO, you used a bit too much sustain pedal in the chord comping (left hand plus chords) which sometimes creates some dissonant blending, for example at 2:16 - 2:36. It seems that there is some clipping on some of the louder notes, e.g. 1:45, 1:46. Other than that, nice Work

Thanks very much Rozovian! I think i'll make some little adjustments here'n there before submitting. Edit: I was actually able to increase the volume a bit without causing any noticable compression. Submitted the track today -
The only horror game i'm playing at the moment is The Evil Within for ps3. Pretty good game IMO, also a very hard one ( i died a lot). I beat it two times and now i'm trying to play through it on nightmare mode.

Aight! I updated the remix for Mod-Review. https://app.box.com/s/cbd8na1pxx5dpjacbmq4r47bvpvp5ofk Changes: - Decreased the phaser on the e.p a bit - Slightly narrowed the organ in the solo - Extended the break at (3:35) to make the ending a bit less abrupt - Some bass fills at 01:45 - 01:47 -

I've got a stereo enhancer, i think that should do it. Just to be sure, you're talkin' about the e.piano not the clavinet (panned right). There is actually no wah on the e.p, at least i didn't add any. I added a phaser though. -

I tried to do that but couldn't find an option to change the rotor width Anyway, here is a version with slightly altered chord changes at 00:57 - 00:59 and 01:41 - 01:45. https://app.box.com/s/193zpbrgzmz33kqgf20hqhbtcyhebivw Better or worse? -

Nostalvania replied to Nostalvania's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Thanks! Well i didn't pan the organ, that's for sure. Yeah, it's the leslie. I actually decreased the rotor speed for the most part of the solo. I think one solution would be to increase the rotor speed in the solo. Or turn off the leslie ha ha (no i don't think so) -

Ok, here's an update: https://app.box.com/s/xrldol687g5v5rbrgarmd0m8mhe1ho2b So i worked on that violin part and made it more staccato and also lowered the volume of the e-piano a bit in that section. @Bowlerhat The 00:47 section still sounds good to me so i left it for the time being. -

Nostalvania replied to Nostalvania's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
@Bowlerhat: I couldn't really hear something clashing in the 00:47 section. It's probably not the greatest chord progression but it works IMO. I agree about the abrupt ending, although i think it sounds better when you listen to it several times. Anyways, maybe i can find a better ending. I'm wondering where in the track you heard a double bass and synths? I actually used an electric bass and no synths. I've tried different sounds for the breakdown section, trumpet, flutes, saxes, but the violin sounded the best IMO. However, it's possible that i'll try another instrument for that section. @Timaeus: Yeah, i think i can hear the issues with the violin and i'll try the staccato phrasing you suggested. Thanks for the feedback! -

OCR02132 - Contra III "Dystopian Future"
Nostalvania replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh yeah! This was one of the first remixes i downloaded from OCR, and i remember that i was pretty impressed. It's the only Contra III remix on the site, and i think i know why, because that soundtrack is pretty complex (that's why i don't remix it lol ) I really like the energy and the live feel, sounds very authentic, especially the drums. The only thing that is actually a bit unrealistic (in terms of a live performance) is the piano sequencing, not the way it's "played" but sometimes it sounds like the piano player has three hands . I think arrangement-wise it stays relatively close to the source, but i know, it's hard to remix a difficult track like this one. Anyways, excellent work! -

Pretty cool, i like the chord progressions although that second chord (0:08) always sounds a bit dissonant to my ears. -

finished Super Castlevania IV - Simon's Theme (Jazz)
Nostalvania replied to Nostalvania's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Thank you! I dunno man, these castlevania tracks are just perfect for jazz Yeah, i see what you mean by the track being more smooth. I think it's because of the style, this one is a bit more "old fashioned" than the other ones. I'm already working on my next mix, it's gonna be rather dirty/funky, and no castlevania this time. -
