  1. So I'm writing a song with lyrics for the first time! :3 It's pretty generic, it has very simple lyrics, a VERY standard progression, but it's my first attempt at singing (using a very very cheap-y microphone) and I can't take feedback from people I know because of embarrassment so please tell me if I'm doing anything wrong. I know my voice is pretty monotone, so I at least don't need you guys to tell me that. ^^; Any advice on filters or EQing or anything would be greatly appreciated!
  2. Easily the most obscure thing I ever made, here's a remix of a remix (technically a remix of a remix of a remix, but whatever) of the legendary Triforce Collab Game Grumps Remix. It's the first time I've used synths in a LONG time, but I'd say it's a nice return to form. (I've been told it starts a little badly. If you want to cut to the chase, go to 0:38. Enjoy!)
  3. Unfortunately this has been pretty difficult and I'm afraid I might not be able to make anything out of it after all. ^^; Sorry, it's a little too dissonant for me to really get that into it (although it does have some really cool moments) and the sheet music just wasn't really working for me at all. D: It's a cool little arrangement, though.
  4. I'll sign up as a novice! I did have a mix rejected with 4 YESes (3 Yes, then 2 No, then a Yes, then 3 heartbreaking No's XD) but I'd like to go down a different route with another remix that doesn't involve ONLY pianos. :3 I would say my best solo work would probably be and , and if they're not good enough to qualify then I could at least go down the piano route which is what I usually do (and led to Lost Radiance being created ;_; *sniff*).If there aren't enough stars for whatever reason, I don't mind too much being a star if I qualify for that too. XD I'd just prefer to be a novice because I'm not good at advising for anything at all. My main reason to do this is for more experience with working with other people that has always been an enjoyable experience. :3
  5. Yes-yes-yes! I still love this track. XD It's got such a gorgeous feel to it and it flows really nicely. :3
  6. Thanks! Although the whole thing was not done in a single recording, each section was individually played in with my keyboard so that I could work more on the arrangement than the hassle of learning the whole piece and then going through the hassle of recording a mistake-less version. XD This way I also managed to get rid of the issue of re-doing entire sections after Midna's Lament because I was initially going to go down the Hyrule Field route after that and it was only because of the fairly impromptu key change that I managed to do this. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I had a blast making it and I'm happy that so many people on Youtube have also been happy with it. XD It's on 3 000 views at the time of posting!
  7. (Youtube Link) This medley combines Zelda's Lullaby (Ocarina of Time), Song of Healing (Majora's Mask), Midna's Lament (Twilight Princess), Legendary Hero (Wind Waker) and Fi's Lament (Skyward Sword) as well as a lot of my own composition. Every variation on each theme is intentional, so don't worry about telling me that Zelda's Lullaby doesn't usually sound like that or that Midna's Lament uses the wrong notes in some places. This was just a fun little song that started from the original arrangement of Zelda's Lullaby you hear at the beginning and grew from there.
  8. Oh man that notation is awful. XD But I'll work with it! The MIDI sure does help. Mind if I mess around with a lot of the bassline? The arpeggios aren't really working so well in areas like the beginning so I might have to add a little more interest in there.
  9. If you'd like, I could work on this. :3 I'm fairly sure I could string together recordings to get a nice whole one. If you could send me a link to download the MIDI file (and possibly the sheet music as well) I could get started.
  10. I got it, yeah! Just need to some way to download the 'Play' player thingy. Entirely legally, of course...

  11. Not much to say about this one. ^^ It's supposed to be a little of a trippy reorchestration with an emphasis on tremolo in the piano and more spacey sounding strings. I'd really like some feedback on the sound of this because I'm going for the highest quality I can with this. Enjoy!
  12. And it's done! A few things messed up in the mixing process, but I'm happy with it and I think it's done. Not going to submit, but I'll use a lot of what I've learned in future tracks. Thanks for all the help everyone!
  13. (continuing on XD)

Do you have any idea where I could possibly buy or find good string samples on a limited budget? I love writing for them but my current strings are terrible and I really need to upgrade so that I can be happy with the quality I'm getting.

Thanks again! The review was certainly very useful, although I think my drive to continue work on the track has almost completely gone. I'll keep in mind all the stuff you said for future tracks, though!

  14. Thanks for the advice and praise! I suppose the mix sounded a bit MIDI-ish because it was all played in using a MIDI keyboard. I did actually perform most if not all of the piano parts, though, so I don't know why it doesn't sound humanised at all. I also tried to get humanisation in the other instruments through recording them, so I suppose next time I'll try to add more expression and thought into each string or woodwind part and their phrase lengths and so on.

As for the drums, I don't really know exactly what happened in that regard. ^^; I acquired new samples recently (free ones, but better quality than standard crappy Mixcraft defaults I was using) and I spent a very long time on the velocities to try and get it to sound decent. It was mostly a learning exercise for programming drums, so I think it was at least a partial success for a first time job.

  15. Before I start work on a new project, I thought I'd share this little piano medley of some Game Grumps remixes. This is an arrangement of Bernard the Biscuit (liltommyj), Baboom (atpunk01), Dang It (xXJerryTerryXx), The Fast Runner (liltommyj) and Banana Shoes (xXJerryTerryXx), created to add a new take on the original pieces (each of which are incredible tracks on their own). I made this a while ago and it recently became my highest rated video on Youtube. In my opinion it's not my best, but it features a few areas of nice piano work, so I hope you enjoy it!
  16. Thanks for the advice! I agree with pretty much everything you just said, especially about the hi-hats. I'll try and tone them down a bit. I'll be releasing a final version with the changes to everything once I've also edited according to the incoming (I hope ^^ Mod Review. Thank you!
  17. And it's done! Or at least the full arrangement is. I'll obviously be changing any problems with mixing and mastering if people can tell me. I'm really happy with happy with how this turned out, and I'm going to put it up for a Mod Review of that's okay. ^^
  18. Version 0.6.1! Finished with Reach for the Stars, and going into the start of Endless Possibility's second chorus for the finish. Almost done with this, planning to make it about 3:30 long if I can.
  19. Finally almost a full song! I'm really excited with how this is going at the moment, and - although there are a load of things to clear up, the arrangement is really coming together and a lot of the work I've put into learning how to do these drums has paid off quite nicely. ^^ If you guys have any suggestions for what I should do next (possibly might be heading into something like 'Endless Possibility' from Sonic Unleashed as well, or going back to Rooftop Run for the ending), that would be awesome because I haven't got so much feedback yet... ^^;
  20. With a few little things fixed up and a preview of what Reach For the Stars is going to sound like in this, here's version 0.4.1. This might be the last version for a while, and I'm sorry it ends so abruptly but I sort of ran out of time to work on it for the rest of the week. XD As usual, feedback would be really appreciated!
  21. Version 0.3.1! Finally seeing some real progress in this mix. I fixed up a few things that didn't work so well, and added a new section that will lead into the chorus of Reach For The Stars (from Sonic Colours). I'm going all out with what I can really do in this so far, and I'm liking the results so far.
  22. Finally starting to feel like a real track. Still a lot of work to go, even on the current sections (a few levels are a bit out in the woodwind, maybe needs some more background interest, and I need to do a slight bit more velocity on the 3rd kick of every bar) but overall this is shaping up quite well. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on the drums, because it's my first time doing them so I might need a few pointers here and there.
  23. Final Update And it's done! A few things messed up in the mixing process, but I'm happy with it and I think it's done. Not going to submit, but I'll use a lot of what I've learned in future tracks. Thanks for all the help everyone! Update 3/10/12 And it's done! Or at least the full arrangement is. I'll obviously be changing any problems with mixing and mastering if people can tell me. I'm really happy with happy with how this turned out, and I'm going to put it up for a Mod Review of that's okay. ^^ Version 0.6.1! UPDATE 2/5/12(Version 0.5.1): Finally almost a full song! I'm really excited with how this is going at the moment, and - although there are a load of things to clear up, the arrangement is really coming together and a lot of the work I've put into learning how to do these drums has paid off quite nicely. ^^ If you guys have any suggestions for what I should do next (possibly might be heading into something like 'Endless Possibility' from Sonic Unleashed as well, or going back to Rooftop Run for the ending), that would be awesome because I haven't got so much feedback yet... ^^; REALLY basic stuff right now, but it's my first time programming drums so I'd like to get some feedback to see if I'm doing right. ^^; I'm planning on making this a full length remix using piano and woodwind instead of guitars.
  24. This is an extended arrangement of the 2011 Gamescon trailer theme for Guild Wars 2. Almost every single phrase has been decorated or added to to give each part more depth and complexity. I'm really happy with how this turned out because of the way that some passages work and fit in very well with the original melodies and motifs. The series of rapid key changes from around 3:10 onwards also fit quite well with the piano's tone and the piece's whole structure. I also think that in certain areas I managed to use bass clef melodies and more unusual chords quite well (1:50 to 2:18 specifically) and I finally managed to get the lower notes of my piano to sound decent and accentuated. This probably isn't a candidate for being an OCReMix due to the similarity to the original piece's instrumentation despite a few large alterations to structure and some of the melodic lines, but I hope you guys enjoy it anyway. ^^
  25. At the moment I'm writing a short score for my school's theatre production of Lord of the Flies. I've been asked to create a few tracks for openings of each act. I've just finished work on the first track's basic structure, sound and mixing. I'm going to be working on several other tracks over the course of the next few weeks. Feedback on the sound of the track and any little thing I could change would be very helpful at this stage. :3
