  1. i'm gonna need to think on this one for a bit
  2. This mix is deceptively simple, well written, and displays a wide palette of sonic textures. The production could've been a little tighter...for example, there were parts where I thought you should've reined in the kick and hi-hat a bit more, but that's the only major issue that stands out to me. I don't really have a whole lot to add to this vote. Nice work, Quinn. YES
  3. haha! i like it. it reminds me of Hindemith's stabs at the ragtime genre...particularly some stuff from 'Suite 1922' Anyways. great writing, and a passable piano sample. not much else to say. YES
  4. Wow. I really like the source tune on this one. Much like zircon, I had to listen to the original and the remix next to each other a couple of times before i felt like i had a handle on the situation. Well, I don't think zircon is giving you enough credit re: chord progressions. the first minute covers the opening chord progression, though this isn't apparent until :38 when the bassline comes in. 1:01-1:31 is a clear reference to the next chord progression (:18-:36 in the source) Anyways. The original is full of so many rich, beautiful melodies, but anything in this remix that carries any melodic weight is shoved into the back. Why?? it's a nice groove (despite what is mostly lackluster percussion) but i keep waiting for some kind of melody to come in and actually take the mix somewhere....but nothing ever happens. it just fades out after awhile. so in essence, what you have here is a nice foundation for what could be an OC ReMix. i think i've made it pretty clear what's missing here. take at least a few of those fantastic melodies from the source, bring them out, and let them lead this mix somewhere. NO RESUBMIT
  5. maybe it's because i'm not as much of a stickler on production/sound design, but for me this is over the bar, if just barely. the arrangement is plenty creative. though it's true that the synth design isn't as varied or creative as it could be, that's not enough to sway my vote. this probably won't pass anyway, but as far as I'm concerned this gets a BORDERLINE YES
  6. it's true that the drums are a touch trebley, but that's not as big of an issue for me. i enjoyed the drum programming, except for a few 16th note patterns on the snare....switch up those velocities so it doesn't sound so fake/robotic though i would like to hear a more involved bassline, that doesn't make or break it for me. it's the arrangement that's really holding this back. it's pretty conservative, and there's not a whole lot going on either melodically or harmonically. as has been said before, this is a great foundation for a mix, but it needs a lot more work. NO
  7. heh, this is pretty fun! here are my gripes: as a brass player myself, the horn samples are pretty bad, but not all the time. these particular samples would be allright if they were used sparingly and only for the occasional big hit...i.e not constantly playing the melody. if you could find some other way to present the melody, either with different instrumentation or better/more diverse samples, that would make a huge difference. another thing that bothered me was the piano noodling in the background...sounds to me like a 10 year old kid snuck into the jam session and is playing one-fingered pentatonic scales on an unattended piano....that's just me though. the drum n' bass work are pretty good, and the wah guitar is sex...as Lee pointed out, it could stand to be a little louder. good stuff navid, i just don't think it's ready yet. NO
  8. kind of just reiterating other judges, but i like this. you've got some good arrangement ideas going on, and i definetly think this is heading in the right direction. as jesse mentioned, the arrangement does start to plod. there's not a whole lot of variety in dynamics, or textures. on top of that, the production is pretty flat. the snare drum and the piano especially sound really lifeless. this is getting close, but both the production and arrangement need improvement. give me some more dynamic contrast (don't let it hover at metzo-forte 98% of the time), and though this wouldn't neccesarily make the arrangement passable, my ears would like to hear a harmonic detour at some point. i mean, something beyond a modulation. good stuff, put some more work into it. NO RESUB
  9. haha. you worded that as if there were another way to generate that sound WITHOUT hammering your whole forearm on the keys. there isn't. thanks for the comments though.
  10. Larry asked me to swoop in here and break the tie, so while I have internet access...... This is extremely borderline. That, of course, has been stated before. I don't think this is that great of an arrangement. And it doesn't have a lot to do with the genre, IMO. The first 2:25 just doesn't do much harmonically or melodically. I really can't see myself voting YES on any mix where this is the case. Yes, the opening section alludes to a chord progression in the original, but it's completely devoid of a melody until two minutes in. In closing, I don't think this is necessarily a crappy piece of music, and I can definetly see people enjoying this. I just don't see this as an OC ReMix. NO
  11. YES Nice job blizizizizizhizizake. Not a whole lot to say, this is cohesive, mature, and well over the bar.
  12. i've tried downloading this twice, and it cuts off abruptly at 6:55. anyone else getting this?
  13. that's great, but i don't get what it has to do with furries. wait, am i in the right thread?
  14. good arrangement. one of the stronger elements of this piece is the use of dynamic contrast. the transitions from piano to fortissimo are engaging, emotional, and very well done. this is well above the bar. one of the few things i have issue with is that it sounds like a brick has been strapped to the vibraphone's sustain pedal, especially on some of the longer 16th note runs. i don't know if that's a limitation of the sample or if it's a matter of personal taste. anyway, a minor issue. YES i enjoyed this.
  15. yeah, this is basically a cover that sounds worse than the original. NO
  16. Hey guys, In case you couldn't tell by now, I love the original F-Zero soundtrack. This is a Big Blue arrangement I did awhile ago, and it was written in the same manner as "Silent Progression." I learned the melody, came up with a loose outline in my head for the arrangement, practiced a few sections, then recorded some takes. This was the best one. On a side note, this is the last recording I ever did with the setup I used for LfTY and Silent Progression: a couple days later i broke the right channel on my mobilepre, rendering it incapable of recording in stereo. Anyway. It's sloppy at times, but Gray convinced me to submit. Plus, people don't seem to be submitting live recordings of actual pianos these days. Maybe not my best work, but I think some people will enjoy this. Game: F-Zero Original: Big Blue Remix: The Flood Plain Remixer: JJT
  17. these are great orchestrations of well known chrono trigger themes. notice that in the last sentence, "orchestrations" is plural. as vig and larry have asserted, this sounds like three different arrangements sewn together. you made some very creative choices while adapting these three themes. this displays a lot of skill, and i would love to hear this done by a real orchestra. all this being said, the arrangements are very conservative, and the transitions are non-existent. this is a fine piece of music, but IMO, it doesn't fit the criteria for OCR. NO
  18. LT pretty much covered it. fadeout endings are usually frowned upon, especially when your mix is only 2:50. production is fine. arrangement is not. this sounds like background music, the kind that dialogue is placed over. give us more. NO
  19. the drum programming is a glaring issue in this mix. dull, uninspired, etc. that's not to say this mix sucks, because it doesn't. the style reminds me of some of Orbital's stuff. it definetly creates a mood, or an atmosphere, or something intangible and vague like that. i don't think the piano had too much delay, but that in it of itself is a minor thing. this needs more inventive percussion and cleaner production to put it over the bar. good first submission. it'd be nice to hear some more stuff from you. NO
  20. nice work David. the piano sample is absolutely fantastic, though apparently that's the work of Mustin. my favorite parts of the arrangement are where you leave space - where you let the various tones and colours resonate and embrace each other. there are some great moments here. the modulations at the end were tasteful, and used skillfully. this is direct post material in my opinion. i don't know why we're voting on this. YES
  21. this is pretty good stuff, reminiscent of MC at times. yeah the humanization is nowhere to be found in this mix, which is a shame. getting the MIDI data tweaked to the point where it doesn't sound mechanical is a really big headache. if you want this mix on OCR, you're going to have to tough it out, and really dig into this one. mess with those velocities and change that tempo up. that being said, I really enjoyed this one, and hope to see a resubmit. NO
  22. generic, 4 on the floor, uninteresting, vocals that make me feel like a schizophrenic, bad GM piano, repititious, boom tiss, loooooooong, icky synth guitar. these various words summarize my thoughts. NO
  23. sequencing sucks. in most cases i'd just rather record a part through a keyboard and call it good. anyway, one of the things that sucks about sequencing piano and strings is that you have to spend so much time dealing with humanization. it's important though. you should be spending a lot of time messing with those velocities until it doesn't sound like Mr. Roboto at the helm. from a composition standpoint this is actually pretty decent. however, as LT pointed out, the arrangement does get plodding at parts. my advice would be to either trim it down or have it move somewhere else. anyway, i think you've got the gift, you just need to work on the execution, which sadly has a ways to go. good luck. NO
  24. oh man, i love this soundtrack. it's one of the few games from my youth where i would stop playing just to sit down and listen to the music. so yeah, props for bringing back some great memories. for 85% of the track, that drums don't feel integrated into the mix at all. it's like they're a metronome. The track comes off sounding real sparse and empty. The lack of any organs, pads, or keyboards is really noticeable. There's not a whole lot of harmonic support of the melody going on. I really like the bass work that weed lays down. Probably the best I've heard from him. And I also thought that covering the melody with saxes was a great, creative idea. Anyway, overall a great concept, but in the end it feels sloppy and rushed. NO
  25. i actually liked the premise of this mix, but at times it does feel like a midi/spc rip with drums and some extra synths over the top. not all the time though. a lot of details get lost in this mix because the production is so murky. i'd like to hear a resubmit with more reinterpretation (we shouldn't even suspect that this is a midi rip if you want it to pass) and better production. NO
