  1. My arrangebias is kicking in. i really like this. the production is definetly nothing to write home about, but it doesn't distract me from the great ideas the mixer is bringing to the table. The overall presentation lands this just barely on the sunny-side of the "bar," as I see it. Either that, or I have a soft spot in my heart for someone else who uses animal sounds as the transition between segments of an arrangement. BORDERLINE YES
  2. Really digging the jazz alterations in this mix. Is that a sharp five i'm hearing at 2:15? I'm a little sloppy on my intervals... I'm feeling the concerns regarding the mixing...the levels on the arpeggiating synth are kind of sketch. Other than that, this is solid work. Very good attention to harmonic detail. There are plenty of major nine and altered chords thrown in to keep things interesting. I'm not a big fan of the ending, but thats personal taste. This is above the bar with some breathing room, in my not so humble opinion. YES
  3. What do you call the writing in the supporting string parts? Very mature, substantive stuff there, but apparently that slipped under your radar. Short? Yes. Beautiful? Yes. Enough personal touches and original part writing? Yes. So in closing, YES
  4. Shadow of the Colossus used this approach as I recall, and that music wasn't sequenced.
  5. So....if (according to you) Pixietricks knows absolutely nothing about UnMod, draws absolutely no respect from UnMod whatsoever, and doesn't give a shit about you or what you think, then why are you arguing with her? Seems kind of silly, doesn't it? edit: k, just read your reply to my post. i just don't see any merit in duking it out with the staff members you're pissed at, unless making pixietricks angry is your ultimate goal. i think there's probably a better way to spend your time and energy, but don't let me stop you.
  6. Let me try to provide that for you. David Lloyd created the UnMod forum several years ago. A couple days ago he deleted it, citing the headache it was causing both him and the mod team. Can we both agree that a percentage of UnMod was making life difficult, or at least inconvenient for both him the mod team? Okay then. To cite two recent examples, the flame wars over the sidebar, the pixietricks threads, photos@magfest, etc, were primarily between members of the UnMod community and the site staff. I'm not stating this as the gospel truth, this is just my interpretation of what happened (so correct me if I'm wrong). This does not mean that many UnModders weren't/aren't decent, intelligent people. It does not mean that either djp or the moderators are/are not idiotic, cruel, unreasonable people. It means that were was drama between two groups of people...one that ran a website, and another other that was using a forum attached to it. IN LIGHT OF THIS, Dave no longer felt that it was worth it to him (the one who foots the bill for this entire website) to continue accomodating a community that has very little to do with remixing video game music. The WHY behind this conflict is irrelevant. It doesn't matter who held the moral high ground. Somewhere in Virginia a guy got tired of letting strangers post whatever they wanted in a forum he hosted. END OF STORY. If you think djp doesn't "get" UnMod, then go ahead and think that. If you think the mods and the judges are a bunch of petty douches who hate to see smart, cool, people get a chance to interact with each other, then go ahead and think that. But this "lies" and "forgotten truth" bullshit has got to go. Do you think that anything truly important is at stake here? Am I sad that UnMod's gone? Yes, I am. Sure, I made fun of it publicly and trolled there on occasion, but I was fond of it. Kind of the way you'd be fond of that cousin of yours who's crazy, brilliant, funny, talented, easy to talk to, but is also self-destructive, rebellious, and addicted to hard-core pornography. Unmod was all of these things to me and more, and I wasn't even around it much. It was a good time, but now its over. Maybe the off-topic forum will be just as fun. Maybe unmod.org will fully realize the former glory of its namesake. Maybe there will be something else on the internet or (God forbid) the real world to fill your empty spaces. Regardless, I hope that all UnModders find what they're looking for. And with that, my bloated, pretentious, monstrosity of a post comes to a close. Good night.
  7. who's darkesword? sum n00b? yes, i'm pathetic.
  8. Aw man, snow crash is immediately what popped into my head! In other words you beat me to it by a long shot.
  9. Oh, I get it. Cuz you're black and bouncers are black. Okay, I've browbeat you enough. I hope this won't discourage you from posting on the forums again. I would also encourage you to keep an open mind, because there's an incredible depth of beauty in some VGM that has nothing to do with the songs "function" or "purpose" in the game.
  10. Topic title: Why are there so few decent Chrono Trigger remixes? How about "please make more orchestral Chrono Trigger remixes" as your thread title? And for future reference, threads like this should go in the requests forum.
  11. Well, the implication of his post is that my remixes (Enter the Frog for example) are abominations of the source. If you listen to everything I have posted here, you'll notice that they all have a different tone and mood then the original. Yeah, he doesn't know any better, but I can't help being a little overzealous in correcting him.
  12. OCReMix is about reinterpreting the melodies, harmonies, and other motifs present in video game music. Coming on the boards and requesting that people make remixes that fit your (extremely vague) idea of what the original was supposed to mean is obnoxious, and downright pretentious. This site has nothing to do with channeling the "intent" of the original. Please familiarize yourself with the site mission and submission guidelines. Thank you.
  13. go listen to OK Computer before I have your judgedom removed on principal.
  14. Does anyone have my entry to IronMix 8 still? If i'm thinking of the right IMC, it was the Stunt Face FX one. My entry was called "owl jazz." I can't find it anywhere on my HD.
  15. MTV Music Generator? Haha, Wow. As far as I can remember we've never gotten a submission made this way. There's probably a good reason for that, though. Not the worst trance arrangement I've heard, but the balance is really bad, the production is sloppy (you can hear clicking at the beginning when certain samples attack). Also, as Larry said the repeat at the end doesn't help your case. In the future, you'll probably want to use a more capable tool like Fruityloops or Reason, as MTV Music Generator doesn't give you a whole lot of options on the production end. Though I'm not certain on this, I doubt you can do any kind of compression, eqing, or the like. NO
  16. Apparently you've never run across the ENTIRE genre of funk. Check it out some time. Bitch, plz. I funk you in da ass. *sigh* you need to spend less time on the radio and more time listening to tower of power. or maybe james brown. ever heard of him?
  17. Apparently you've never run across the ENTIRE genre of funk. Check it out some time.
  18. NO OVERRIDE afk. edit: At the request of some fellow judges who will remain nameless, I reluctantly retract my NO OVERRIDE. My grievances, however, have been fully documented in an 18 page report, now sitting on djp's desk. That being said, here's my vote: Well Jill, in the end my liveperformancebias ended up pushing this to a YES vote. This is borderline. Pros: * Whenever I see lyrics on a submission, I instinctively cringe, but these really aren't half bad. There's some great imagery in there that grabs a hold of me. If on a lyric quality scale: 1=excerpt from a random jr. high journal 2=avril lavigne/smashmouth/lionel richie 3=semisonic/alanis morrisette/no doubt 4=death cab/ben folds 5=jackson brown/paul simon I'd put this at a solid 3.5 * Do I really need to praise your voice? You've got very impressive range, control, and intonation. I rarely hear a voice this pure. * The pacing of the arrangement works well. * The combination of the choir, synths, and strings creates a great atmosphere Cons: * Drum sequencing drags this one down. When the second verse comes in, the bass drum pattern sounds very stilted and awkward. There's no pocket/groove/whatever you wanna call it. When it changes to the filtered hi-hats and what not, I can breathe easy again, but until then that whole section makes me unsettled. I could see some judges having a problem with how they're eq'd/processed, but its really not an issue for me. * The backing synths get real repetitive. * I wouldn't have minded hearing another chord progression at some point. Maybe a bridge? Anyway, something to think about in the future. Sans vocals this wouldn't be close, but that isn't the case. All your background parts are absolutely gorgeous, probably my favorite element of the entire mix. Good luck with the rest of the vote. YES
  19. All the elements I would expect in a ktriton remix. Breakbeat drums, harmonically interesting chord progressions, great piano/keyboard work, synth bass, all wrapped snugly in a good arrangement. Did I get everything? I hope so. YES
  20. I'm not entirely convinced that this is the entire song. If so, we're gonna need some more length, plus a lot more interpretation. It *sounds* pretty good, so far. NO
  21. GAH. You're killing me man. This sounds so sweet, but its really just a straight up cover with a solo section and some great horns/rhythm section work. I'm gonna need to think about this one for awhile. -------------------------------- Yeah, I tried to find some way to justify passing this and I just can't. Harmonically and melodically this doesn't stray from the original for an instant. Great additions and nice little solo section can't redeem that. I really enjoyed this. If you want to retool it for OCR that'd be great, but otherwise I hope you find a way for this to get heard. Also, coming up with an actual intro and ending would make this twice as awesome. That's all I got. NO
