If it ain't broke don't fix it. Just look at Blue Dragon. That game and its battle system were amazing. A little too easy, but they had a "hard mode" you could unlock or download or something. And new game+. I'm gonna do it someday.

ff12 battle system was ok. I liked how you could set it to different things like for healing, and stuff. But FF7 had the best battle system. Materia is where it's at. FF8 had the second-best, drawing magic from enemies and adding its power to your stats was incredible.
