Mighty kind of ya

I've had the Sony's, the AKGs....but somehow I just end up using my CAD Sessions Headphones all the time. They were around 70-80 bucks I believe, and they've got great response.

For me it was definitely Secret of Mana, which also happened to be the first ReMix I made as well. I would love to do an entire album of Mana ReMixes and just let loose on it...those melodies and the imagery of that game are strong with me, I'm feeling the pull. I salute Kikotu! Thank you for the amazing music.

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, They Might Be Giants, Bobby McFerrin, Jeff Buckley, Al Greene, Prince, RHCP, The Flecktones/Victor Wooten, Pavement, Badly Drawn Boy (hour of the bewilderbeast), Turkuaz, all the early 90s grunge rock greats, Return to Forever, Yes, Fiona Apple, Erykah Badu, Ben Harper, Alt- J, beastie boys, New Deal, Bibio, James Taylor, Rufus &Chaka Khan, flaming lips, Air, D'angelo, MJ (the early live Jacksons stuff is outta this world), Zeppelin, Jimi, Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Bonnie Raitt, Leonard Bernstein (the Chichester Psalms will blow anyone's mind)

Just sticking to the EQ/Mixing side of things, I've got some suggestions... I'd start by doing some subtractive EQing on every instrument, as opposed to boosting things trying to get the right sound. That's when things start to get muddy, and before you know it every track is battling to be heard. I don't hear many offending higher frequencies in your song, but the kick, bass and the guitar undertones are all competing for a similar frequency space, and that's when you start getting phase cancellation (2 signals in the same frequency that are out of phase with each other, resulting in a level loss) and other unpleasant sonic shiz. There's a ton of online literature about subtractive EQing. Snoop around on youtube and see what you find. I don't know FL, but here's a video that breaks it down a little (in Irish brogue, no less) Then to expand on that, you can start 'carving out' frequencies for each instrument so that each occupies its own little slice of audio land. I like to use a parametric EQ so that it's a visual thing. The sounds are a bit General Midi-ish for my taste, but I'm a believer that you can create vibe from just about anything so if you're strapped on VSTs, you can still make things feel interesting. Alas, I would definitely get rid of the slap bass patch and use something smoother.

Nice! Glad to help. Here's a last idea for the 808: @ 2:15 when the beat drops out again, you could accent the drop with a single deep 808 boom on the downbeat, to really bring it all down. I guess it depends on what sounds you've got to pick from, but you can always tune it lower/higher to fit nicely in the song. I'd either throw a beat delay or some thicker reverb on the claps too (you could also duplicate the clap track, pan them to different sides and throw a 1/8 delay on one, or both...add a little feedback, get that big pop sound to them. They still sound a little dry, for my taste. The tone is solid, though!) The song's got a real nice ebb and flow to it, now, good stuff!

Wasn't expecting that! I'm a big fan of cosmo canyon (I imagine everyone here's a ff7 fan), and somehow never really pictured it with a pop sensibility and strong major overtones. Digging it Song's great as is, it's Chillbo Baggins, but as you're looking for some constructive advice I'll offer a few bits up: The kick could use some EQing to help it pop without sounding too tinny. Maybe layer it with a warmer/rounder kick so that it gives some more low end oomph. Maybe even an occasional 808 kick for a little sub flavor? Don't hold me to that one, though I'd bring the synth pad that's in just after 0:30 down a few (or more) hairs to match that gentle cymbal roll. Really layer up all those pads and the background arp so that even at a lower level it really fills up the space (keep that beat delay on the lead, it's right on!). When that melody line kicks back @ 1:17, I'd increase the buildup to it with either a filter sweep or a stronger cymbal roll. And get those claps popping! I always like using a subtle beat delay on claps, layering the hell out of them, and carving a chunk of them out in the 1khz range so that they have a little bite. You don't want to suck the warmth out of them, though- you've got a good tone, I wouldn't change it. So maybe just a level adjustment would do the trick? Basically, anything to help build the tension all the way to the end so that it arcs. All the elements are there, I think it's just a playing-with-levels game throughout and some EQ tweaking. Take that for whatever it's worth, hope it helps!

I initially imagined going more orchestral since it's such a melodic, fluid piece. Alas, there have been other remixes of that nature, and my strongest suit is bass/groove/vibe. That seems to be untouched territory on this song, as far as I can find, so I embraced a new direction. It's got an R&B/Electronic vibe that slowly build while scattering in the notable motifs from the original. I reharmonized the chord structure, and took my own liberties on the bass line, made my own samples, etc. This is one of my all time favorite games that I've played through countless times since I was a kid. Heyo! I'm Alex, and I'm an OC Noob living in NYC for the past decade, making my way as a musician. Like most here at OC, I grew up with VG soundtracks resonating in my brain, influencing and shaping my creative output. I've been so busy working on other people's music for a living these days, that I finally buckled down and started building up my home studio in Brooklyn in order to start focusing on making original music (and remixing my favorite compositions, in my own style). I make my way as a bassist, but I've always wanted to make 'organic' electronic music. Besides the 8-bit mania, I grew up listening to everything from Frank Zappa to Air, Leonard Bernstein to Flaming Lips, The Flecktones to Nirvana...obviously I ain't a fan of genre. However, I do often approach my own stuff from a bass-influenced place. I'm hard pressed to think of a game composer that I don't love...even the less memorable ones are still great. But of course Uematsu is an inspiration, and modern crushers like Danny Baranowsky are the real deal. I've been wanting to join the OC community for a while now.
