finished Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Dreamin' Of Them Funky Ripples
Jorito replied to Jorito's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Jay, more useful feedback! Looks like I might want to go over the mix a few more times to iron out some last changes And yes, those jazz voices are from Ommisphere, glad I finally found a good excuse to use them -

Thank you kindly, sir! I will have a look at the points you indicated, fix them if I can and then send it to the judges to be judged One question though: I'm not a brass expert (far from it!), so how does one detect (and fix) cheesy brass? These are just Native Instrument Session Horns, not sure if they are cheesy out of the box or if I have a talent to make them cheeze -

Oops, how stupid of me! Source link added to opening post. -
Luckily we have tools and things such as midi files available nowadays. I'm old enough to remember recording a game song from my tv to my tape recorder and to transcribe it using endless play/pause/rewind cycles. You _do_ learn how to transcribe well and quickly tho, because it's such a pain to start with

So... I think I'm ready for a mod review -
Fortunately this is something that gets easier with practice. Also, usually I'm not going for a 1:1 cover so a few deviations a not a problem
-
Same here. I never use midis, mostly because it forces your thoughts in the same direction as the midi in stead of how I hear it in my head. So I always transcribe by ear. For the Aleste song I started with the chords, then the melody and after that I started improvising. First with the bass and the drums and then with the rest of the arrangement. Midi would just constrain my creativity and inspiration. Midi does have its uses when you are having trouble transcribing very quick or complex passages tho, but that's more using it as a cheat sheet.

Yeah, there's not a lot activity yet. Hope it doesn't come to needing a second pick, it'd be quite a waste of a (IMHO) nice source track. Awell, at least I'm having lots of fun with my bonus track
-
Aw heck, let's just go for it then. Not sure what I'm getting myself into, but collabs are fun so it's prolly worth it So DarkeSword, please sign us up as a team. Since I'm not that familiar with the OST, let's just take evktalo's list. Renoise FTW!
-
If you need a Renoiser and can't find anyone, I'm willing to help out. Did a lot of stuff with Renoise 2.8 but switched to Logic Pro when 3.0 was released. But it'd be easy enough to pick up again, even tho I did mostly use it for VSTs.
-
I'm somewhat tempted to sign up too, but decided not to. But if you have a single open spot that has to be filled before you can start, consider me a reserve
-
Hey, my bonus song is coming along nicely already. Since I can't actively participate in this one anyways, I'm going overboard and looking for a vocalist atm
-
Cheers for pointing that out, it's the exact same midi I originally posted. If anyone needs another midi, you can also use this one: http://www.msx.org/downloads/music/midi-files/aleste-2-area-1

Glad at least one person likes it, hope to see some interesting entries I will try to chip in with a bonus track if I can; already have some ideas for it.
-
Sweet! I feared I might have overdone it, but glad to hear I was wrong It was a great and inspiring source track to work on and had a lot of fun. Will pick a source later today.

So here's a funky, groovy remix of the song "Ripple Field" from the SNES game Kirby's Dream Land 3 that I originally did for MnP20. Never played the game myself but the source tune was very catchy, and it turned out to be a cool and fun track to work on. Still debating if this is fresh enough to submit to the judges or not, so let's hear it Remix: https://soundcloud.com/jorito/kirbys-dream-land-3-dreamin-of-them-funky-ripples Source:

Prolly just your imagination Unless we get few mystery contribs in the next 2 minutes

Interesting mixture of genres, never tried that. As for any tutorials, sorry, no help from me I guess. But I'd appreciate some tips and tricks too! The only chiptune thingie I did (Vampire Killer's Wicked Child) was a simple matter of just taking some presets and playing around with it. That can get you quite far, but I have the feeling you can do a lot more with it.
-
Haha, yeah, only noted the TheSauce time after submitting. Shame on me, I would have had time for an hour or 2 to polish the mix
-
Track submitted. 't Was a lot of fun, thanks to Blaine for his great selection BTW HoboKa, you might want to consider adding a timezone to the deadlines for all us non-US peeps

Thanks for clearing that up, I'm in the clear now as i didn't do any genre swapping and the 75% notation is also definately there. Guess I was caught off guard by the midi (I didn't use it but transcribed by ear) and the sound upgrade statement
-
Can you give a general guideline as to what "conservative approach" implies? I was working on this nice Kirby track, but things got a bit out of hand when creativity struck. It's definately still recognizable but also went a bit beyond a normal sound upgrade. Is that gonna be a problem?

Never played the game nor heard the music before, but I liked this li'l track and got inspired. Hopefully I can finish it in time
