  1. Try to time your activity and inspiration if you can. Forcing myself to work on something never worked well for me. I mean, music will come out, but it'll never be that great. In stead, when I hear this cool game track that inspires me in one way or the other (or this particular music style I want to try out) I place it in the back of my mind, think about how I want to approach things, think out basic song and/or instrument ideas and basically pep up myself during the process, so that when I finally get myself to my DAW (which can be anywhere between a few hours to a few years later!) stuff more or less goes all by itself. So yeah, mental preparation works for me, but I need a starting point (a source or a style) and a bit of me-time (bike trips to/from work or the shower work well for that ). Seems to work for me, I never end up behind my DAW stuck or uninspired. And if that doesn't work for you, just keep at it. Stuff does get easier and more natural the more you do it. Even for newbies like Argle who have been at it for only a decade Oh, and it might help to stuck song structure a bit more. All the purists made me a bit scared of music theory stuff, but it's a useful tool that helps you understand the how and why of things and it can also help you get unstuck. Song structure is one aspect of theory, but transitions, energy buildup and dynamics are also part of that. I switch from composing music by feel only to music by feel-and-thought, it did a lot of good to my tracks.
  2. Glad to see some enthusiasm for this unknown gem (also a game with a most unexpected ending btw). Hope you guys can find time to join; seems you have some interesting ideas
  3. Cheers for the feedback guys, much appreciated! Will go back to the DAW to polish some rough edges and add a bit more variation?
  4. Wow, that was a close race! Wish I had more time to work on it before the deadline, I only had one day for this But I plan to work some more on it and finish my track properly, so the feedback is much appreciated! Will try to pick a source either tonight or tomorrow night.
  5. Congrats Blaine! On the one hand I'm curious on what track you picked, on the other hand I prolly won't be participating this time because of lack of time...
  6. Track uploaded. Damn you Gercr for picking a track that demanded a remix!
  7. LOL, that's funny, me too! Guess we have at least the same idea about the instruments to use
  8. Also working on something. Not sure I have something presentable before the deadline tho.
  9. I guess it beats being called Dorito For y'all entertainment I added my bonus track to a Youtube movie so you can hear it whilst gazing at the game (coz I guess people don't know it). The remix seems to fit quite well actually. Check it out at .
  10. You did copy/paste a bit much, I think the "Assuming Jovito submits his track before 2PM Monday" part can be removed Too bad you didn't have any inspiration for anything new btw.
  11. LOL, at least you didn't spend days on a track that isn't even allowed to participate
  12. I created this as a bonus track for the Meat 'n Potatoes #21 compo, but since it turned out pretty good I thought I'd ask here for feedback and maybe increase the judges' queue a bit more It's a remix of the stage 1 song from the MSX shooter Aleste 2, made by Compile in 1989. It started out as an experiment with Realivox Blue, the instrument that does the vocals. I was playing around with it, it sounded quite nice and the rest of the song more or less took off all by itself. After the main part of the song was done, I added the intro and the break, giving it a bit of an ethereal, otherworldly touch. Not sure about the style, I'd like to dub it "Ethereal Italo". Original track: Remix: https://soundcloud.com/jorito/aleste-flying-high Due to limitations of the voice synth (and my lack of skill in writing) the lyrics aren't that great. If somebody wants to volunteer and sing (and rewrite) the lyrics, you are most welcome! The lyrics:
  13. Cheers; will have a look at this last feedback and do some work on it before sending it to the judges. Gotta wait at least a week before I can submit again anyways
  14. Nice I'm sneakily hoping for more, but at least I can be sure now that I don't need to pick another track, and Blaine can stop worrying about being lonely
  15. Hey, a surprise entry, nice! Also uploaded a nice bonus track for y'all to enjoy
  16. Good luck, make something cool of it. And have fun while doing it
  17. I never cared for creating my own sounds and the elitism that comes with it. Every sound I'd want to use has already been created anyways, and better than I could do. So 99.9% preset user here, although I might tweak them at times
  18. I'm happy that this edition of the compo is going well, with an entry from Blaine already in, gercr and evktalo working on something and Jonathan will also chip in by the looks of it. Guess I don't need that second pick after all, 't was just off to a slow start For myself I did some more work on mixing my bonus track. Lesson learned: I don't suck at mixing, I just dislike doing it a lot. Guess I'd rather be composing and arranging in stead of endless tweaking with plugins 'n stuff...
  19. Hey, it's still 2.5 days till the deadline Even though I can only submit a bonus track, it'd make the entries section less barren. Still have to do a lt of work mixing tho, so don't expect it before friday...
  20. LOL, no, the only instrument I play is my DAW That bassline was created using Scarbee Jaybass and a lot of hard work, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out!
  21. Interesting source tune. Got some ideas for it, but not sure if I have the time. We'll see...
  22. Did some work on the mix, hopefully making it better and not worse Tried to process most of the feedback here, so lots of small volume changes here and there (including ones not listed here), a bit of EQ to the guitar lead, some changes to the drums at the end, replaced and worked on the strings and mostly worked on the brass section. Tried different mix settings and also added some articulations. Unfortunately Session Horns is a bit limited so not sure what else I can do Anyways, updated the openings post with the latest version.
  23. Jay, more useful feedback! Looks like I might want to go over the mix a few more times to iron out some last changes And yes, those jazz voices are from Ommisphere, glad I finally found a good excuse to use them
