  1. AMA pushes for video game addiction as diagnosable disorder

Excessive video game playing sure can be a problem. But an addiction like any other?

The distinction is a matter of fierce debate, which is about to intensify as the American Medical Association prepares to push for a formal designation of internet/video game addiction as a diagnosable psychiatric disorder.

The addiction diagnosis is one of six video gaming recommendations the AMA will consider this weekend at its annual meeting in Chicago. The recommendations are part of a research report developed by the organization's Council on Science and Public Health.

Although adoption of the recommendations would not immediately change existing laws or pyschiatric diagnoses and treatment, a tough stand from the nation's largest doctor group eventually could have a big impact on everything from how games are rated to how doctors respond when patients complain about the effects of video game overuse.

"Maybe we can get parents to take a greater interest in what their kids are doing upstairs for several hours, not only to prevent addiciton, but to have better oversight over what they are watching on TV, what video games they are playing or reading on the Internet," said Dr. Martin Wasserman, executive director of the Maryland State Mediical Society, who introduced the proposal to the AMA in 2006.

  2. Sounds good. The samples used sounded synthetic - but in a darn good way. It made me want to hear the strings break down to an omenous voice of the NOD computers or whatever, foretelling of the destruction and so forth. Would have been an incredible touch to add.

  3. Firstly, let me be the first to say this isn't techno.

Firstly, it sounds like loops with no intro and what not. All techno has an intro - even if it is just the kick to mix in for sets. Not that I recommend doing it.

Right now, it just sounds like a bunch of ideas mashed together. Needs a bit more thought on how you want it to progress.

Edit - You don't have to have the same atmosphere as the game. If you want quirky cyber sound, go right ahead and do it. Hey, how else would that porno mario mix have come about?

  4. Not the two hour gap he was talking about. He was refering to the two hour period between the West AJ Murders and the Norris Hall Massacre. Why the killer waited two hours before returning to campus and slaughtering the engineers. Especially the reports that he was asking about his girlfriend in Norris, when it seems his girlfriend was the first one he killed, more then two hours earlier. That points to the killer simply being batshit insane.

The standard response of a person who just finished off a murder and evaded the initial police sweep is that they go to ground for a few days. Try to hide, before either fleeing or killing their next victim. Serial Killers rarely use guns in a public area, so signs pointed to a run of the mill murder. They didn't account for the insanity factor.

Guys, I think we need to establish that the first girl was not his ex-gf.

  5. If I may, I just want to bring a bit of a personal update while I have a few minutes free, since I have forgotten to do so for the whole day today:

All the people I was still trying to get in contact with the last time I checked in here have been accounted for. They're alright.

Now, I sleep. You may resume your discussions.

    That's good to hear.

  6. I'm still amazed that guy jsut stood there with his camara phone recording. What the hell was he filming before the gunshots went of?

In a related not, I didn't find out about it until 12, when they said there were thirty dead and they had no idea where the killer was, though they seemed to know he'd killed himself. My first thought was "I jsut know someone, somewhere in the media, is going to tie this to either videogames, or Columbine." Sure enough, Charles Gibbons was less than two minutes into the ABC special report when he brought up Columbine.

so damn sad. Can't even imagine what I'd do if something like that happened around where I live...

Edit: Does it strike anyone else as particularly retarded that Fox news interviewed Jack Thompson of all people about this? I mean, it's bad enough people lost their lives to this guy, but do we really need an extra dash of over the top sensationalistic media to make it worse? Personally, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth...

    Here's a thought.

You have a camera. Some guy is going around shooting people - you don't know but you might be next. There isn't much you can do - or you are already hiding (you can tell from the video that the guy was hiding around a corner.) You might as well catch a few images of the assailant before he kills you or kills others.

  7. It's the prevalent theory going around campus right now. Rumor has it that the two people killed in West AJ were his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend, but there's no way to confirm or deny that right now. So if that's the case, one has to wonder why he waited almost three hours before going on that rampage in Norris, what with no ex-girlfriend or her boyfriend to go after anymore.

I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for any news from around campus, since there hasn't been anything new released to the media for hours now.

Two or three hours for the sadistic psychosis to kick in, I bet.
