CRAZY East West Deal! Buy 1 Get 1 Free!
SnappleMan replied to big giant circles's topic in Music Composition & Production
What's the point of going through the OCR shop? Do we get a discount? I'd personally go through some of my ReMixer friends who work in these places and help them out with commission, not to mention get their employee discount and whatever else they can throw at me. But thanks for the heads up, I'll be sure to pick something up! -
Hmm, well, as far as mixing goes, you're doing it all wrong. Everything is completely dull and lifeless, you need to get more instruments to take advantage of the 500-1000hz range, it just sounds really badly scooped. Arrangement wise, you have a few problems there too. For one, it's too slow, sounds boring. The instrumentation is lacking too. The sounds you chose are flat and boring. That lead is particularly bad, and the organ you have playing needs a more expressive performance. The drums sound fine, but again, with this slow tempo you really have to work harder to fill the space with rhythm. And I don't mean add more notes or drum hits, I mean think rhythmically and make the silence between the drumhits work for you. Also, the bass has to be changed to something that's not a droning piece of shit. Try layering some piano chords or SOMETHING to get a more lush sound out of this, it's too damn boring.

These are not techniques, these are theories. The technique would be to explain how you would do these things. Stating the general idea like that is fine, but you have to go into detail to help someone. These kinds of generic ideas are what everyone is gonna be saying, so after the second page, everything will be repeated with nothing really having been said. I don't know how you people can't see that.
-
How are these techniques? So far everything that's been said has been along the lines of: "To make your song good, make sure it sounds good and doesn't sound bad." This thread fails. Though it is funny to read a Nicholestien post where he tries to use punctuation and proper grammar, but still uses "there" instead of "their".

See, I'm trying to create this toney bass thing...
SnappleMan replied to MrKyle's topic in Music Composition & Production
Sounds to me like an Udu drum. Trying to recreate this using a pitch envelope would not only be impossible for you (unless you have a team of professionals at your disposal), but it's impossible overall to emulate that natural shift while retaining those tonal characteristics that make the sound sweet. As for the attack and all that, that's just compression, very simple. I suggest you get yourself some decent Udu samples, or any ethnic drum that has those characteristics. You can get decent free stuff just by Googling. -

You have to figure out if your interface has ASIO support, if so, you need to properly install the drivers and set up your Ableton Live to recognize and use those drivers. If you don't have ASIO drivers in the interface, try using something called ASIO4ALL, though I personally dislike that solution.. it may work for you.

Stupid deal: $3000 keyboard
SnappleMan replied to BluefoxIcy's topic in Music Composition & Production
DX7 :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Hy Bound is an idiot, and bluefox once again proves he is completely useless. But, in many cases, the price of a synth is directly linked to its quality. Ofcourse, there are a few "Les Pauls" of the synthesizer world (meaning they cost about 300% more than they're actually worth), but for the most part, you get what you pay for. -
Metal Gear Ac!d + Chrono Trigger + <More to come>

Your harmonies are offkey. Unless you're going for dissonance which I can tell you're not because the rest of the composition doesn't go in that direction. -

After 14 tries this is the best you got? WEll, the mixing in this is REALLY bad, but that's the least of it. The orchestral style intro needs more articulation and better composition. Once the song comes in though, it goes from bad to worse. Almost all of your harmonies are wrong, that lead instrument you chose sounds ridiculous, and the arrangement itself is seriously lacking. What you need to do (besides learning some music and training your ears) is to learn about proper arrangement techniques. You seem to have no idea what song structure is. Most of the work was done for you by the original composers, you can't just stick the songs back to back and hope it'll sound cohesive because you used the samples for all the songs. The key is to map the song out before you start arranging, listen to it in your head, and then try to translate that into a plan, on paper or notepad or whatever, just write it out in terms you can familiarize yourself with. Then go back, listen to each song, and try to match sections from each song, whether it be by similar rhythmic patters, same key, or anything that would glue section A from song 1 to section C from song 2 or whatever. MIX the material together in a good way, and use time and silence more effectively! All that time and silence do in your song now is prepare me for a bad transition into a totally new song, this is not how one song should be. -
The FINAL FANTASY III ReMix Album - "Echoes of Eternity" - loool
SnappleMan replied to zircon's topic in General Discussion
linksfag, just because the news broke today doesn't mean we haven't been secretly working on this for a while now. Honestly, I don't give a fuck if this'll be on your MP3 player, we got tons of real fans who actually apreciate what we do, so go fuck yourself with a rusty knife. -
Bluefox, shut up Anyway, yeah it is indeed a legit guitar made by Epiphone, I found one on the street in a pile of garbage a couple years ago, no amount of cleaning would get rid of the filth.... Anyway, the sparkly silver finish more typical, I've also seen a very nice looking natural finish version (norg had one which he sold to housethegrate).

So you're telling me that the people you invite are voting for you purely based on the content of your music and are not at all biased? I wouldn't believe that if you paid me to. I mean, I don't care how you get your votes, but for me personally, I'd feel very wrong asking my friends to vote for me. Just because the site encourages fair play doesn't mean there's any way to enforce it.

I beg to differ. Project Chaos took long enough that I had to redo all of my songs twice due to massive upgrades in my production. In any case, I blame Kyle's girlfriend for this not being done (and a few other things as well!)

The amp's line out is a bad idea. Unless you have a brand new state of the art amp that for some reason has a line out (most high grade amps do not), then you're doomed to a very high noise level. As for the PRS interface, I don't really have the details on it, I can't find a spec sheet anywhere. I'm thinking of getting one myself because I just ditched my old pre-amp.
-
I'm not gonna get technical, but impedance is the voltage to current relationship, and it's pretty logical to assume that if your source and destination are of different impedance, there will be some sacrifice. In your situation, you do have to worry about sound quality unless your external sound card has a mic preamp built in, that would convert the signal to be used properly in the digital domain. If your sound card only has "Line Input" or something similar, then you are getting a reduction in sound quality. So either get yourself a good preamp/DI box, or if your sound card has it, use the Mic Input.
-
Unfortunately, I didn't read most of your post, sorry As long as you address the points I made and make an effort to learn music, all is well.
-
Yeah, you really need to get your hands on a DI box to lower the impedance, this will reduce the noise level and give you optimal tone out of your guitar. Something REALLY cool that was recently released is the Waves GTR3 interface. It's relatively cheap (about $75-90 if you shop around) and is specifically made to convert your guitar signal into a low impedance signal in the same way an amp would. And it's made specifically for amp modeling software, I recommend you check it out. http://www.waves.com/content.aspx?id=2590

This isn't an opportunity for you to whore your own stuff! Also, just because you suck doesn't mean that anyone who's better than you is a good musician.
-
Differ all you want, it wont make this remix good.

Constructive criticism is for MUSIC, not random bullshit thrown together by someone who has no idea what music is. There's nothing elitist about having standards, this is a site where anyone can join and post whatever they want, not everyone has what it takes to be considered a musician. People these days forget that it takes a certain level of talent to do something well and get praised for it.
