  1. ok guys i'm looking for suggestions for a song to arrange for a 10+ piece big band.

reason why i ask...i have an arranging class in which i'll be doing this for. so far i haven't really been able to make up my mind on what i want to do, so i figured since i wanted to do a vg tune i'd ask here. i am also planning on sequencing and submitting the track if i feel it to be satisfactory enough :)

i would also appreciate it if when a suggestion is made that you could possibly link me to a place where i could hear or find said tune.

    thanks!

  2. i'm not sure this would pass the site standards for a few reasons (dunno if it was even planned on submitting or not):

    - very mechanically sequenced, little to no humanization...add more variation in the velocities and attacks of the notes. dynamic variation would also help greatly, it's mostly a solid dynamic all the way through the whole piece.

    - most of the arrangement is structured very similar to the original song. add more material to this sucker :)

-i really hate bitching about samples, but the brass needs some helping.

-a lot of stuff here sounds very dry too...reverb could be most welcome

    things i liked:

    -the sfz on the brass

-the percussion is well done, good brush work

-not often you hear these kinda solidly composed brass parts happening

-the piano is a great idea (the actual humanization and sequencing just needs some work)

-intro is cool, probably would've been a better idea to give the bass to a cello or just the bass used later in the song...also the choir...wtf cool

    1:25 - Blues much? ;)

sorry you don't have the source file, but maybe if you do future projects this might be of some help.

    definitely a fun listen

  3. Arek and myself have been trying to get a game of Defense of the Ancients for a few days now. If anyone is interested please post here or contact either of us...we'd really love to get a game going.

also this would work as a LAN game as well, just go to hamachi.cc and grab their client (super small easy to use VPN proggie).

also yes i know there was a DotA thread in gen disc a while ago, but it's seemed to disappear.

  4. i've never learned in any theory class i've taken (and i've taken a few now  ) that any either is "stronger" really this comes down to your own personal preferance and tastes...

however, when it comes to tendancy with the voice leading; there are more tendancy tones in the V7 chord to resolve. so because of this i'd say the V7 is stronger...i'd say the sound of a PAC is even stronger still.

  5. you bring up some interesting points, very interesting indeed.

really the whole idea comes down to balance, that is when you talk about arrangement and what's considered a remix. how much of the original is left in versus how much change/addition.

if you want to do something that's twelve-tone, go for it, just make sure you have the right balance of materials. for example, i might think of including tonal or modal material that includes the original stuff from the song being remixed and then have a sorta "B" section with new original material that could be twelve-tone material if you choosed it to be.

my opinion on the twelve-tone idea: it may not be a great idea to use a row to create something new with a melody from a video game track to base your remix on...simply because it might not be easily recognizable. though that really depends on how you'd be arranging your row and how you'd be using the rhythms and other elements that go with it, etc.

as far as a broader spectrum of styles/genres...sure i'd like to see all kinds of types of them here. i doubt many would be in the styles that you mentioned because not many people who are involved in this community could write something that could be considered Palestrina-like counterpoint or something that could be considered twelve-tone. i'm sure there's some talented people out there who could...that also poses the question of, would anyone really do it? i think the answer really is that if it sounds good...do it.
