  1. Used to play Jedi Knight quite a bit back in the day. It was also one of the first games I played online in the 90's, using some shitty multiplayer service website from Microsoft. The last part of the series was Jedi Academy and has become an obscurity due to never getting any reprints. I think it was the most fun of the bunch for multiplayer, had the most developed lightsaber combat at the time.

They really ought to get Raven to make a new one.

  2. Boss music is from Jets n Guns.

There actually was a CD version of Sonic 2 planned, which turned into Sonic CD. The time travel mechanic was meant for Sonic 2 on Sega CD, and I read that some assets that made it into the final game like Hill Top Zone was actually a past version of Emerald Hill early in development.

  3. Now, given that Disney actually was a bit psycho (trashed one of his offices once I believe) and harbored an obsessive hatred for communism, unions, and everything inbetween, wouldn't it be more fun to spot all the subliminal anti-left messages in all of his works?

  4. I thought Super Metroid would be an interesting pick since it would be pretty challenging to translate properly into FM synthesis. I think so far some aspects sound better and some worse than the original. For one, the SNES version suffers from a severe case of the "muffled" sound from that stupid filter/interpolation going on, so with FM the sound gets more brilliance. On the other hand, Super Metroid has some great eerie choir samples that make up a lot of the atmosphere. I just figured out a great trick to get good choirs out of FM though. It takes 2 slightly modified patches complementing eachother, but that also swallows 2 channels. I will update Brinstar 2 with better choirs later.

  5. http://www.tmz.com/2009/12/29/blackstreet-singer-accused-of-rock-band-attack/

I clicked the article expecting more zany VG violence news... except the offender in question is Teddy Riley :-/

He is just cited as a singer from Blackstreet, but he was more than that. He was a producer and pretty much single-handedly changed the face of R&B and pop music during the late 80's and 90's. He also made Dangerous, Keep It In The Closet and Jam for Michael Jackson, and in turn was likely involved with Sonic 3 in some capacity. I pretty much idolized the guy. Up until this tragic incident.

He had also produced for Bobby Brown who was a notorious wife-beater.

  6. TFM Maker wasn't specifically made to emulate Genesis, its focus was on Turbosound FM, with the universal YM chip support being more of a by-product. That means no DAC sample playback, and also no support for the 4 PSG channels which is a significant loss (though you could write the PSG parts separately in Mod2PSG and then mix them together). The tracker also only supports stereo when you play the file rendered as .vgm, no way to hear it in the actual tracker.

Sound advice from Yoozer about using different tracker techniques. I try to replicate most of these as much as I can in FLStudio which goes a long way in making chiptunes feel more authentic. This is something I feel all too often is lost when I listen to works by the newer generation of chip artists.

Another good trick is to transpose the notes down a bit on the scale for the faked echo parts, this was a good way to bring out more harmonies back in the day when channels were limited.

  7. GXSCC has been the source of many youtube "8-bit remix" disappointments for me. People will just drop 16 polyphony channel MIDIs into it and think they've created genuine chiptunes. This is getting a bit off-topic though.

There is another option for making Genesis chiptunes. nineko developed a tool that lets you convert tracker modules to the Sonic 1 sound engine, which can then be played through a Sonic 1 ROM. A few of my works have been converted with it for use in a ROM hack:

The conversion isn't flawless though as AFAIK it doesn't convert data like pitch bends, vibrato and PSG volume. The Sonic 1 sound engine in itself also doesn't support all the available PSG channels, from what I've been told.

I don't know where to get the program, you'd have to ask the author of the youtube video.

  8. Yes, it is electro. But not electro house

But you asked specifically for electro :)

s Madonna making house albums because she uses a 4 to the floor beat sometimes?

Absolutely. Madonna was among the first to bring house out of the chicago underground to the mainstream in the 80's. It is her trademark routine to pick an underground producer to make an album for her, which typically makes said genre explode in popularity. She did the same with trance and trip hop in the 90's, and then house again a few years ago.

  9. Basically, if you know what electro is, and you think there is an electro remix on the site... let me know!

    Yeah, this is electro.

satisfaction is more minimal house than anything

The instruments used may be more minimalistic, but the production is anything but. It's all brought out to be very loud and in your face. Minimal house is more akin to this, "tiny" sound with lots of breathing space.
