  1. Ok, I love the source for this one, a favourite of mine for a while now. I like the idea that you have to make it into a more gloomy, ambient-style remix. You have some terrific composition ideas, especially with the piano around 2:00. But the way the mix is produced makes it sound drab and unprofessional. The piano is muddy and maintains a roughly equal velocity on all notes played, same with the woodwind playing. In other words, it sounds like it could've been composed as a MIDI and then just had soundfont instruments put in place of each instrument. The piano and woodwind will need more humanising for this to pass in my book. I'm a little put off by the fact that this mix has received 6 YES votes when it's clear to me that it needs a lot of work before it's up to par with production standards. We've rejected mixes before for sounding fake that sound less fake than this one. This is a definite candidate for resubmission though, just humanise the mix more and you're good to go. The rearrangement factor is fine, I don't see any need to further fiddle with that side unless you want to build on it some more. NO (Resubmit)
  2. Remix this source or fear my wrath. Please, please fear my wrath.
  3. Well since you're the one leaving, you find another remixer to take your place if it's so easy. Your tracks stay on the project until I hear something equally good or better to replace them.
  4. I've decided that in spite of Ashley's request for removal, I'm keeping the tracks in the project. Future rule for reference: Once you commit to the project, your track stays on the project. You fuck things up for everyone if you remove your tracks over stupid reasons, so make sure you actually want to stick by the project before committing to it.
  5. ReMixer: The Orichalcon Game: Cyber Stadium Series: Base Wars Source: Game Theme MP3 | NSF (track 1) ReMix: 42 Minutes Precisely Was my entry into PRC106. I've never played the game and never even heard of it before. But the source was pretty cool. The latter half sounded like junk to me so I just remixed the first 20 seconds or so. The file's not tagged properly for an OC ReMix since it's tagged for the competition, but I can take care of that if it's passed. I made it in the style of a chillout song with a dance beat. I didn't want it to get too complex, so I focused on making the most of the few sounds and samples that I put in it. Some of my mixes have a habit of getting a muddy when I start playing around with ambient effects, so I kept this one free of Spectrasonics Atmosphere and just used free synths. The vocal samples are from Doctor Who.
  6. Uploaded my entry. Funky, stylish upload page on ThaSauce, kudos. Had to register though.
  7. and contracted for another 5. Given how well it rates, I don't see it ending for a long time. Even if it's cancelled, Matt and Trey will just move the show to the internet. They've made plenty of money to feed off and continue their art.
  8. I liked it a lot, they could've made a movie out of it if they wanted to. MANBEARPIG! and the way ImaginationKyle was grinning at the end as he went down on ImaginationCartman was funny.
  9. Short vote because I'm late for work. Listened through the remix. It does sound generic, but it's also obviously had a fair amount of work put into it. I'm happy with the way it sounds, even if it's not my cup of tea. I'm going with zyko's vote for this one. It's borderline, and it's mostly the length that's causing me to think that. But I think the artist knows what he's doing and the public will enjoy this. Pretty much sums it up. YES
  10. OCR's halloween theme 2007. I don't have any issue with the volume that BGC seems to have. The clipping sounds more like intentional distortion to me. The melody is awesomely remixed in a retro-dark mood, pitch-sliding all over the place. The beats are dark and thick, the piano is evil and foreboding. Can't ask for anything better. YES Get this posted for Halloween for sures.
  11. I agree with both of you. Unfortunately I have no control over what happens with what's accepted to the site or not.
  12. certainly happy birthday wishes from me. We're one year closer to hearing the best of Mazedude. If he reads this: I promise DQD will be released soonish, since I know you've been waiting oh so patiently for a chance to show your tracks.
  13. This is a tough one. Some parts are almost verbatim from the source, but it turns into a fairly nice additive arrangement from about the halfway point. I think the standards pretty much dictate that this one is too close to the original though unfortunately. I'm still your friend, Jon. I just think you could probably be more interpretive in the main section. Maybe switching things up a little bit every now and then. This would so be a definite yes at that point. I'm gonna go with a RESUBMIT.
  14. Percussion isn't working at all for me. Cymbals and the rimshots both sound really quiet/dull and dry. Your samples are almost all basic and bland. In particular your string instrument sounds like something straight from a MIDI soundset. You need to alter the velocity on it, so the quieter notes don't sound exactly as sharp as the loud notes. But yeah, not feeling this one at all really. It's basic and needs a lot more work on production. The arrangement is all right as Larry said, but it could sound a lot better. NO
  15. Is it possible to remap the keyboard? I'm not used to playing with WASD, for some reason they changed left and right keys from strafe to turn. I'm impressed by the game so far though, the walker is awesome fun. Can't wait to play that baby on a large map. God, I love this thing.
  16. Doesn't have to be too many. I think even if it's just a few of us, it'd be worth it. Could just head to a bar or something, depending on the ages.
  17. I'll be in Melbourne from November 21st to 27th. Any OCR'ers from Melbourne interested in organising a meet-up in that time? I'm staying in St. Kilda if people familiar with the cities layout want to organise proximity. Post if you're interested. Also if anyone else wants to organise a holiday to Melbourne in that time to join a meetup.
  18. Doesn't really go anywhere or build up to anything. I don't know if Space invaders could be said to have any music as the "melody" was really the results of the individual sound effects in the game stacking together. It'd be like calling the beeps a phone makes when you type in a random phone number a song and remixing that. Anyway, on the merits of the song. The beat is generic four on the floor right the way through. It doesn't build up at all. Your major creative use is the triangle synth that just beeps its way through most of the mix along with the generic do-do-do-do melody. Could be a good song if more effort was put in. Remember the drums aren't just there to keep the beat, they have to be interesting too. Build them up to something. NO
  19. I had a good think about those wolfenstein tracks and decided that since they're the exact same versions as were in the game wolfenstein (where-as the Pantera/Slayer stuff is either covers or arrangements for Doom 2) then it wasn't really Doom 2 music. Besides, Map31 is itself a rearrangement of the song Black Sabbath which would've made it inelligible also. But I'm not absolutely against a Map31 or 32 remix. If anyone made a good remix of them for the project I'd certainly consider adding them. But as for why I added these 5 pieces for the project. They're part of Doom 2, whether they're based on rock songs or not. The MIDI's that are in the game are unique to that game, so there's really no point in leaving them out.
  20. Tracks 07 and 18 are now available. Edit: Also, added further information to the first post to make it absolutely clear what the status is on individual tracks in the project.
  21. I dunno what it is about this source that makes people want to make techno/dance remixes out of it. DJCarbunk1e did that for the doom project. Anyway, as Larry said the remix has sections where it uses none of the source, and then sections where it follows the source almost precisely. I can't hear references to any other Doom music in here and I'm pretty close to the Doom soundtracks, so you're spot on Larry. Production is all right. Arrangement is good in terms of the genre, but bad in terms of remixing. You need to rearrange the melody. NO
  22. I'm agreeing that this mix sounds like it's still a little short of reaching its full potential. The drums are beautifully powerful, although I'd like to hear a doubling/trippling of some of those tom hits around 2:00 so they don't sound so samey. The break in the middle was too long, shorten it, or at least keep some ambient effect/string line going there to connect the sections. Balance things a little better and this mix is fine to go. Love the ending. RESUBMIT
  23. Sounds good to me. Weak point is the drum kit for sure. Could've been sharper and crunchier to emphasise the power of the mix. Every time that snare hits I feel like turning the treble boost up another notch (it's nearly maxed.) Sharpen that snare please. The shinra theme is also a source around 1:36, appears to have been missed. I'd say the ending was weak, but there simply was no ending. There's laziness and there's laziness. Just do a fadeout if you can't be bothered shaping a proper ending, it's better than doing nothing at all. Add an ending and boost the snare a bit. RESUBMIT
  24. Well, the exclusion tracks were sort of decided back when Dark Side of Phobos was still under works. David suggested that we let the cover tracks slide for that project (ie: remixes of covered rock songs were still allowed to be posted to OCR then) but enforce the rule once the project was finished. So that means that tracks on DQD are subject to the rule. Now, I started a topic on the panel to get opinions on whether or not we could make another exception for DQD, specifically because of how good DJR's Map 18 remix is. The general opinion was that Larry and David would take each track into consideration as they were presented, since some tracks are direct covers (map 18,) where other tracks just use parts of songs to create an entirely new song (map 07.) I didn't exclude them from the project because, covers or not, they're what made Doom 2's soundtrack complete, and they're going to be remixed for the project. The only screw in the woodworks is that remixes of the covered songs won't be elligable for direct posting to OCR. They'll still be on the project website (likely to be doom2.ocremix.org) as well as in the torrent and mirrors. They'll get just as much exposure as the rest of the doom 2 project tracks that aren't posted to OCR (It's likely that a maximum of 4 or 5 will be posted to OCR, which is what happens with every project.) So, I'm sorry if I didn't make the ruling specifically clear on those tracks. It's worth pointing out that it's not really a legal issue with the exclusion so much as a personal choice by Dave on the site's behalf. He's made the decision that the site caters more to remixes of truely unique songs written for games than songs that are inspired by rock tracks or other people's work. Anyway, I'm all for getting as many DQD tracks posted to OCR as possible. So if anyone wants to submit a remix of one of those tracks, just run it by me first and I'll see what I can do about getting it posted. Just so you know, DJR, I'm gonna chat to Larry about your Map07 remix tonight if possible and get it put in the direct post queue for the project's release along with Evilhorde's Map01 mix. Map07's source is original except for the drums which were covered from Slayer's "South of Heaven", so melodically the parts that you actually remixed are fine and should be allowed.
