  1. [23:43] * The_Orichalcon beats off GeckoYamori to Another Soundscape - Jade Cocoon People Made of Stone OC ReMix [04:05m/192Kbps/44KHz] !tardis to download. [23:43] <The_Orichalcon> ooh, tribal [23:43] <The_Orichalcon> and it's non-sucky tribal [23:43] <The_Orichalcon> PUBLIC #OCREMIX JUDGEMENT [23:44] <The_Orichalcon> bell thing is pretty kewl. the tribal percussion is gentle and well balanced in the background [23:44] <The_Orichalcon> flutey-thing sounds fakey, but fits well as well. Good synth build-up to 1:19 [23:45] <The_Orichalcon> rock drums are an interesting idea. They work well, but I'm expecting guitar [23:45] <The_Orichalcon> switch-up at 2:26 was awesome, reminds me of Schala's music in CT [23:46] <The_Orichalcon> yeah this is pretty kewl. Just need to check it against the source [23:47] * The_Orichalcon touches RamaMacBook to Kimitaka Matsumae - Syrus Village [01:40m/224Kbps/44KHz] !tardis to download. [23:47] <The_Orichalcon> ok, compared to the source, the drop in the quality of the instruments is evident. But it's a brighter soundscape, so it's negligable [23:47] <The_Orichalcon> arrangement is a worry, the flutey lead is pretty close to being verbatim. [23:48] <The_Orichalcon> Builds up well as a more pop-rock kind of piece, but for that kind of genre switch I'd expect it to be a bit heavier with more than just synths added [23:48] <The_Orichalcon> anyway, sounds good enough to pass [23:49] <The_Orichalcon> so YES
  2. This is awesome lo-fi stuff. My biggest gripe is that the scratch samples are too hi-fi for the soundscape you have set up. The lead is just.. beautiful. I really hope to hear more remixes in this style from you. The bassline stuff around 2:30 really raped my ears with the panning though, it was fucking from left to right. Was glad when that ended, but at least it keeps up with the lo-fi sound. Anyway, this fits well with the electro-industrial style. Sounds like a mix between BoC and Skinny Puppy. It is a very liberal arrangement. But the track is just too hot sounding to let slide by, and the source is there, so I'm giving the track the benefit of the doubt. More please in this style. YES
  3. The thicker sections sound all right on my new headphones (which are great btw.) I think if anything, the mids could be dropped just the tiniest fraction to thin the crowding, but it's really nothing worth doing. The arrangement is the key to this track being enjoyable, but I do admit it is very damn similar to the source from the game, which is a damn cool track. I'm hesitant to pass something that references the source so closely in both arrangement AND genre. I'm finding myself agreeing strongly with zircon's final paragraph. Maybe take this one back and try out some more unique rearrangement ideas. NO
  4. I've always loved the article. I'm just disappointed that the only insult next to my name was "makes bad techno". I mean, come on. That's like 2 seconds of thought from a 14-year-old. Although I guess that does summarise ED. Anyway, people who take it seriously: Get a life. It's satire, it's funny.
  5. Addiction suggests that one would go through withdrawal symptoms if deprived of the addicted substance (or game in this case.) I'd like to see if anyone shows physical withdrawal symptoms if kept away from video games after being diagnosed as "addicted".
  6. ReMixer(s): The Orichalcon (just little old me!) Game(s): Pokémon Blue/Red Title: Clairvoyant Eulogy Source: http://www.zophar.net/gbs/pokemonb.zip - Level 12 Description FiremanJoe requested this one. Wanted to do an industrial style remix. With the elements of electronica and some strings. Things get quite distorted, but it's all relative and ultimately purposeful. The ReMix is short, but that's because I accomplished what I wanted in the short amount of time. Elements of the source should be readily recognisable.
  7. Love this track. Best mix off Bad Dudes EP in my opinion. I used to listen to it over and over while I was hunting Shadows in Anarchy Online. Fit the Crypt of Home scene very well. Dark, powerful and quirky. Just the way I like my Mazedude.
  8. You've simplified the mix a lot from the source. You have a rich soundscape going on here, I'm enjoying the thick textures and the crisp clear industrial sound. But there's really not a lot going on in terms of the arrangement. You flirt around with the synthy leads from the source in sections, but where you could've really built it up into something complex, you always jump away into a weird break or drum solo. Take no fault from this. I really enjoy this mix and I think it's passable as it is. But it pains me to think that this could be a lot better than it is at the moment. ie: a little more work on the arrangement can push it from being a B track into an A+ track as far as I'm concerned. Really work on getting those crazy fast synths going in some of those sections. I'll give it a YES anyway, far be it from me to reject someone just because I think a passable track could be better. But if this does pass and make it onto the site as is, I'd be pleased if you still went back to the track and maybe made an extended version of the mix that's a little more daring.
  9. Sounds good to me, there's a lot of reverb on that main synth which probably could've benefitted from some fast gating to break it up at some points like the pads do from about 1:50. It is simplified a bit from the original. But I think there's a lot more going on here than the original submission had. I'm enjoying this a lot more at least and I think the public will too. The rearrangement is evident, and the sound quality is above average. You could've given it a proper ending. Maybe fading out on the intro melody. YES
  10. Don't pick up the black orbs when they drop. If you leave them, they'll float off to a particular spot on the map after 10 seconds or so and give you 3 instead of the 1 you'd get if you picked it up from the enemies. Just watch the orb and keep an eye on where it floats off to so you know where to go to pick up the final one. You can quickly get 30 orbs by killing only 10 enemies that drop them.
  11. Well I'm going to see Carlton vs St Kilda with the Carlton Supporters club on that weekend. They're also having a get-together, so I can't really postpone that. But the more OCR people in Melbourne that could come, the better.
  12. Looks great, Rama. But now I have to find out how to combine it all into one again. They work together separately so I suppose I could just load them both whenever I format.
  13. I'm gonna be in Melbourne in about 7 weeks unless something goes wrong with my organisation. Any Melbourne OCR'ers interested in organising a meetup on that weekend?
  14. Reminds me of the "Desk" idea from Ender's Game. if they can project is as a 3D image above the screen, it'd be even better. But I can see this sort of thing replacing remote controls in TV rooms and such. You can run your entire viewing experience from the coffee table in front of your couch.
  15. I get the feeling that the power from those drums comes from the fact that they're loops more than any particular programming talent by the mixer in question. Most of this mix utilises good sounding loops and samples with little actually arrangement ideas involved. As I've said in other votes, we all start somewhere. You'll want to work on developing mixes that are entirely your own, utilising individual samples rather than entire loops. No matter how crap they sound initially. That way you can at least gain the confidence and experience in generating something good from your own work. NO
  16. Uh yeah, apart from the guitar, there's nothing remotely interesting happening in this mix. Really, spend more time making sure EVERY part of your mix has a purpose and sounds good. Can't let one instrument carry everything. NO
  17. Mix is just beginnerish. Not that that's a bad thing, we all start somewhere. The lead's dry and basic. The piano sounds obviously fake. The drums are basic and sequenced in a rather meaningless way. The rest of the mix is just place-holding. This needs a lot of work to make it more spectacular, less generic. NO
  18. Yeah, I feel the emotion, but it's overall kinda bland. It can be touching and still produced properly. Can't rely on emotion alone. I think you'll probably come back to this one in a few year with more experience under your belt, and you'll do your cat proud with a touching eulogy remix. But for now this needs more work, as both Vig and Larry have pointed out. NO
  19. It wasn't so much the ending movie as the ending battles, which were way too easy for high-level characters, as usual. Square need to start shaping bosses based on your level. Like they did with Diablos in FF8.
  20. Possibly because the ending is usually disappointing. I know I was disappointed with the end of FFXII.
  21. Basch was my party leader from the point that I had him in my party. He should've been the lead character.
  22. Graphics 9/10 - Really well done, couldn't have been much better. But there's always room for improvement, so doesn't reach the elusive perfect score Music 8/10 - I really enjoyed the soundtrack, and I've listened to it a lot on its own. Some of the battle music fell short unfortunately. But the Esper Battle and Boss Battle music was superb. Overall I enjoyed about half of the soundtracks tracks enough to listen to them again outside the game. "Theme of the Empire" and "The Feywood" being two of the best tracks in the game. Gameplay 9/10 - Can't fault it in any way. The gambit system can take a long time to set up. But it's one of those things that I personally really enjoyed Story 4/10 - I agree that the story was where the game fell short. I enjoyed the game most when it broke free of the story and I was able to go do my own thing. The story was confusing, and too many characters were really left out to not actually do anything. Penelo and Basch didn't add much to the storyline. Vaan started off strong but was shoved into the shadows later on. Balthier, Fran and Ashe were story central, but even then I didn't get a sense of a "team" the way you do in other Final Fantasy games. Voice Acting 9/10 - I liked it a lot. Unlike a lot of other people. Basch, Vaan, Fran and Balthier in particular were done really well. Ashe was the only one that got on my nerves. I should point out that it's not the story itself that I didn't like. It was promising. But it's the way it was told, too many things were left unexplained properly. It just got really confusing and tacky.
  23. That upgrades my vote to: YES OVERRIDE (Kidding, I have nothing against Jews or old women.)
  24. Thankyou Compyfox for providing the Devil's advocate side of the policy draft. It is necessary that we look at all points of the draft with as much critical integrity as we can. After all, it's better that we iron out all the details here in this thread now than being surprised down the track with possible lawsuits and such. I'd only ask that you, Compyfox, try not to take such a hostile tone with the site and with Dave in particular. Understand that we're not perfect. We're not lawyers, and this site stands on very shaky grounds as we attempt to find the balance between free art and law. It's fine to argue all aspects of the draft. But attacking the very idea of the policy that we're trying to put forward goes against the direction of the site that we're attempting to take, and is simply hostile.
  25. Yes. That's the point of the policy draft. It's a disclaimer. Once people submit their remixes to OCR, they're subject to the points in that list, legally.
