*NO* Metal Gear Solid 3 'Lineage of the Snake'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I never thought I would ever say this in my whole life, but there is too much reverb on the strings. The whole mix is flooded in reverb! Especially that kick drum. When the strings come in, the whole mix gets way too loud all of a sudden. This sounds as if it could be a really nice expressive mix if it was mixed properly, each instrument needs to sit in the right place, and reverb applied to each instrument seperately. The drum beats are just lost in the reverb, and the string sounds just wash over everything like a jug of water spilt over a painting. Put the reverb and the instrument levels right and this will be a yes. There's a good mix hidden under there somewhere. I'm just repeating myself over and over again here! NO -
Er, this is way too short, and it's just a cover of the original, this isn't a remix. Remember it's ocREMIX. NO
-
Nice acoustic guitar work here, good production, arrangement and interpretation. Not much to critique, except that piano-like sound that I can nitpick at. So I say YES
-
Nice guitar stuffs, although some of the transitions are too blatant for a medley. This is just a guitar cover really, needs some more originality. NO

Ok guys, it's me singing! The lyrics to this were written by 'Vega the Matador', a fan of mine (oh how I blush ). Anyways, let me know what you think, and don't forget the yeses. Now I know I don't sing as well as DJP, but gimme a chance lol. I better get on with judging now, a lot to get thru here!

The bass for me here is waay too boxy and not tight at all. About 2/3 of the way through, you're wondering if it will change, because there isn't a break here at all, it just continues on the same vein for the entirety of the mix. I like the electric guitar sound a lot, but most of the other sounds are too dry. More than anything though, this is very boring and it's only 3 minutes. Mix it up a bit. NO

I love the Deus Ex game, and the soundtrack is so good... Anyway, on to judging this mix. I agree with Liontamer in that this takes a while to get going, as it's mainly just beats. The vibe is there though. Mostly everything before 2.46 feels like it has too much beat and a distinct lack of melodic elements, especially as the original had so much going on in that area. This is pretty good, but it just needs to be that little bit more defined as far as mid/high frequencies and melodic instruments go. Almost there NO

*NO* Eternal Champions 'Eternal Lament' *RESUB/DIFF VERSION*
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
What did we say about this last time? http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=47575 Wow, I could almost say the same thing, cause this came to us before he could see the decision that we made on his previous version. The low-fi drums have ceased to become an issue now, they're still there, but he's balanced it out with eq or something, it's just not bothering me like it did before. But I'll say again what I said before (but a little bit clearer this time). Needs to be longer, with some orginal stuff added in, like your own new melody or something like that, or a breakdown, change it up cause this isn't finished yet. Sounds very nice at the mo. NO -
Don't like the percussion here, way too boomy (which by the way is the mainstay of this mix). This is pads, with some beats with an off-key flute underneath. Isn't much here to listen to at all. Virtually no ending. NO

*NO* Chrono Trigger 'The Fall of Zeal' *RESUB*
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the piano work in this, although I don't like those strings, the attack isn't pleasant, that's the main issue for me. The remixer has created a nice mood here, good use of reverb in most places. I had a bit of a problem with the oboe, thought it was a too prominent, but overall, the atmosphere was there and so as such, the mix was effective, and I enjoyed listening to it. I am borderline because of some of the sound issues, but swinging towards a YES Keep all of our criticisms in mind for future mixes to make your future stuff even more effective. -
*NO* Tetris (NES [Nintendo & Tengen]) 'Purple Megamix'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Intro: Well your gameboy must have been broken, cause mine didn't sound like that...lol This sounds a bit muffled....what, 96kbps? I should no it just for that, no but seriously, you should at least put it at 128. Oh, now I see what's going on, this remix is 8 minutes long. There's no point in mixing it down with professional gear when we can't appreciate the quality of the mix because of such a low encoding rate. There isn't a lot here, it seems there is just melody, bass and drums for a lot of the time. Now that can work if you flesh it out properly, but this sounds quite gm ish, and added to the low quality of the whole thing, I can't pass this. 4.10-4.20: Nasty kick overload. 5.40: Ok this is sounding somewhat fuller. This isn't up to OC standards. NO I personally think that 100 hours is way too long to spend on one song. -
This was fun to listen to. A lot has been done to the track here, as Liontamer said, the original was very sparse. Drums get a bit repetitive, a breakdown or a change of beat for a little while might have been an idea. However it doesn't detract from the groovy guitar improvs. LOL for the predator sample at the end. YES

OCR01295 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Aeris Lives'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Whew, this recording sounds sweet. Great piano playing, what else can I say? YES -
*NO* Sonic CD (JP) 'Work It (RetroHouse Mix)'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Er, HELLO!!! Any progress on this AT ALL? Is this just gonna sit here forever? *hyperventilating* Ok ok, gotta calm down... -
I agree with Vig in that these are some really good chords here. By the end of the song it just seems to be plodding along, it needs some kind of climax, or a tempo increase. I do also think that the recording could have been a little better perhaps, but that's only a small gripe really. The sustained chords are not as bad as I thought it would be, but perhaps more reverb and less sustain would be best. It's not a big no, but I would like to see this more refined, heeding all the advice above. NO (Please resubmit)

Very original and amibitous this, but it was pulled off rather well. I like what you've done with the guitar, it's got that real 'twang' sound to it. I think that the mix has a very mechanical feel to it, but that's my only issue with it, and it doesn't detract enough from all the positive elements of this enough for me to say no. YES Very different.

*NO* Super Mario RPG 'Party in the Plumber Kingdom'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
At first this doesn't sound too bad, but then deteriorates somewhat as the mix goes on. This has a quite mechanical feel overall. Some of the instruments stick out like a sore thumb, and the percussion sounds very GM and hasn't got any variation to it. The main issue for me is the mixing. NO -
The instruments here sound very dry, and as a result I don't feel drawn into the mix at all. That violin sample and the way it was used sounds nasty. At 4.17 when the reed instrument suddenly cuts off, that sounded pretty bad, reverb could have softened that. In addition, the fact that this was encoded at 22khz doesn't help. Overall this is an unremarkable interpretation, and not up to OC standards. NO

*NO* Sonic CD (JP) 'Work It (RetroHouse Mix)'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Hey, I love this old house style! I do hear a blend of elements from both versions of Wacky Workbench being used here, and I like the original touches in this. Production/mastering is just right, it's very in your face, with the compression adding that little bit of punch to it - what we've come to expect from Gecko. The groove didn't change, but I think that the variations here were enough to keep the mix going, and it is true to the genre, very dancy. One could say that this is perhaps too typical of the genre to be on the site, with the breakdown at 1.33 and the subsequent buildup. This might be the one factor that may work against this mix, but not in my mind. YES I was trying very hard not to think of streets of rage as I was judging this. -
Wha this sounds wicked! I like the way that the original has been used here. I'm digging that B section like crazy. I would give this a yes but for only thing, and that is that this seems like it should flow, but it doesn't - suddenly the flow is changed. It works from A to B, but then when C comes in it's just too much of a change. Oh Israfel just said the same thing. I think if refined, this would make a really good addition to the site. NO (please resubmit) As for not many people getting it, well that's their problem. I just love experimental stuff like this.

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 'Swing, Monkey, Swing (Vine Grab Edit)'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This has a strange vibe to it, like it's stuck in time. It doesn't feel like it's going anywhere, there's no progression. Production is pretty nice, reverb is effective in filling up the space; although I found the congas stuck out like a sore thumb. That drop off at 2.57 was weird, and then that little bit of piano before fading off again - that didn't work for me at all, it was way too abrupt. This just doesn't feel complete yet. NO -
OCR01270 - Street Fighter II "Wrestling with Double Bass"
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I can understand why some people wouldn't like this mix. I had the idea in my head and tried to realise it as best as I could. I wanted to try and do something new instead of sticking to the same formula. NooseFashionedFromBelt, if you are implying that I have no talent, then you are of course entitled to your opinion, but don't bring politics into this. -
*ROFL* Donkey Kong Country 2 'twilight thorn tiara'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the idea of the person being drugged, and they seem to be slowly coming out of it as the song goes along, great concept. This is definitely original, but is it DK? This is weird! Great sound quality, but it's not easily indentifiable. I'll have to come back to this one later. -
I must be psychic! Or maybe his description was that good I guessed it was this track. This is a very memorable track, it plays on the bio screens. www.zophar.net/gym/etrnchmp.rar "Introduction" Nice mastering; I'm not too keen on how the low-fi drums sound, but I love the other percussion in the rock section. Anyway this is a good mix in all areas imo except arrangement. I can't hear much difference from the original, although it is a nice cover of the track. NO If you could weave some originality into this I would Yes it.

This really sounds like a GM soundset has been used here. The percussion is extremely weak, and the 404 sounding synth is way too loud, I swear it's causing clipping when it comes in. Lots of mixing and mastering issues in here. 2.33-2.43 Listening to the background piano, I swear I hear elements of Mcvaffe's improv. With all the filtering in the mix, I can see where your inspiration comes from. 2.50- Some weird dry harp/koto/something-stringy like sound comes in, the quality of this instrument is really quite bad. Overall, I think you need to work on your mixing, this is quite painful on the ears, I dread to think what this must sound like through headphones. NO
