OCR01026 - *YES* Terminator 2 'CSM-101 Level One'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Hmmm... there's just something about this mix. It has a very distinctive style, and I suppose I am biased slightly because I like the theme. Nevertheless, he doesn't overuse it as I expected and I guess I'm trying to say YES -
7.02! This is a long one, the second longest we've ever recieved I think. The first thing I noticed is that the bass sound wasn't holding the last notes of the riff very well. Anyway... I get the feeling that this could have been a really good mix, except that there are parts in the mix where lots of instruments come in at once and the whole thing clashes into off-keyness for a few seconds. Noooooo... Other than that, some instruments could have done with some more reverb to really fill out the song. NO
-
The guitar sound is a really really bad choice, and the rest of the sounds don't fit together well at all. Major offkeyness with the strings starting at 2.36 when you put the other sonic theme in (think it was aquatic zone and something else too). Some good ideas, but some better sounds are needed. And there was off-key. NO

OCR01013 - *YES* Ecco 2: The Tides of Time 'Drift' *FT*
Malcos replied to Israfel's topic in Judges Decisions
Wow loving this one. But to make a good judgement we need the input of someone who has heard the original music. I'll give this a YES until further notice. -
I didn't get any prompt like that.
-
The main flute instrument sample was played a lot lower than the note it was sampled from, so you get that unnatural sound, which takes away from the effectiveness and emotion that the piece should have. The arrangement was ok, although some instruments came in way too loudly and the ending was too sudden. NO

I'm sure you get this a lot. I submitted a mix back in ... oh, February! and I was wondering if it ever even made it into the queue? I received an email confirmation, but I check the Judges Decisions fairly often and never saw it. It's from a game called Arcana for SNES. Mix title is "Quoth the Draven." Thanks again for your help! -Richter

OCR01008 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Of Transformants and Brevity' *FT*
Malcos replied to Disco Dan's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeeeeeaaaahh.............Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy.... I like the guitar work, it's really good, but I'm not sure if this would fit into OC. I'm seriously baffed here, I don't know whether to say yes or no. I'll come back and force myself to make a decision if this stays here for an obscene amount of time, but I'm going to back out of this now....slowly.... -
First of all, there's no need for this mix to be 7 mins, it just gets really repetitve near the end of the mix. Most of the piece is very empty, very sparse sounding. There are also major, major off-key issues. I'm confused because there are parts where the bassline so does not fit with the rest of the tune (from 4.20 for example) and then you have other parts where everything sounds fine (from 5.16 for example). Now I've never really played Wave Race 64 so I'm not familiar with the music, could a large part of this be a midi rip perhaps? Anyway, NO

Awwww, this is so sweet and nice. I can hear some background noise, but this is a live recording after all. YES

OCR01016 - *YES* Sonic & Knuckles 'Deep Damp Sandcastle' *FT*
Malcos replied to Beatdrop's topic in Judges Decisions
Hey you can't do a fallthrough for yourself! I love the beats and bass, maybe you could have speeded up the melody to fit inside the beat instead of slowing it down, as it looses its urgency. Then again, if you were going for the ironically laid back feel (I always gotta run through this stage quick, the ghosts!) then it works great. YES (Although I know you can kick more arse than this!) -
Hehehe I love that monosynth part. This is hard hitting, almost to the point of clipping (or maybe it is clipping?). The piano part put the level of the mix down somewhat - it definitely needed some more reverb, and could have done with a little delay too. YES
-
Yes, this is different. The instruments go together well, and flows nicely. The only reservation for me is the arpeggio synth line near the end of the mix, it seems to have been programmed to play certain intervals in one key, but it doesn't work as well when you move to the next chord. Erm, my vote is pending, I can decide on this so I'll come back later.
-
This is weird. You know why? The drum work is great, groovy, dancy. The synths however, are the complete opposite. They seem out of time with the drums, and the patches themselves don't work together. Keep the drums, and try to work the synths with the same groove. An ending would also be nice. NO

*NO* Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 'Melancholy Apocalypse'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
2.04? This sounded like an intro. This has promise, but it doesn't lead into anything, and I am left high and dry. Too short! Great sounds though, and nice instrumentation. NO -
Fm sounds! Grrrrr.... Oh ok, it was only the intro. Hehehw whoops.... While this is a dance mix, he doesn't leave it as four to the floor for the whole time. The percussion and synth work is well thought out, and there was enough variation to keep my active interest. Good stuff. YES

OCR01021 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Fluss der Liebe' *FT*
Malcos replied to Vig's topic in Judges Decisions
Nice work. It does repeat itself, but the depth of the piece more than compensates. There are some issues with the dynamics, but I don't think that it destracts too much from it. Overall, an effective piece. I particularly liked the way it nicely dropped from major to minor. (You know what part I'm talking about!) YES -
I can't remember what the song is called, but my friend recently brought out his Megadrive and Lemmings, and suddenly I remembered this tune. I sang the song, then pitch shifted the vocals up one octave. Of course, by doing this my voice is completely unrecognisable, and unfortunately, I didn't realise that it would render the lyrics unintelligible. There was also primarily a lot of sibilance on the vocals, which I tried to eq out. A failed experiment.
-
Nice sounds, although I hear some fruityloopyness. Anyway, this is an good arrangement, not much to say about that really. My only criticism is the mastering - it didn't really fill my speakers, and lacked bass. That said, I'll give this a YES EDIT: Gotta remember to check da webspace thingy next time!
-
Very different percussion - added a lot of interest to the mix. I began to get bored about 4 minutes in though. At around about this time, all the sounds are dropped and built up again in a way similar to the intro. After this buildup it would have been great to have another instrument come in and do a mad improvisation solo thing, as I found the whole thing rather stale by then. 6.24 - wtf? Oh, that was the explosion thingy? Ok then. This mix drags on too long, it would have worked if it was a 4 minute mix at a higher bitrate. NO
-
There were just a couple parts in this piece where I heard some disortion. The drums are interesting, but unfortunately they seem to be the only source of variety in this mix. To counter this, the mix is quite short - but in the end as a whole the mix doesn't really do much. NO

OCR01043 - *YES* Metal Gear Solid 2 'Electric Gear Solid' *FT*
Malcos replied to Israfel's topic in Judges Decisions
Some parts could have done with a bit more reverb, namely the strings, and the hats could have been a bit louder. A solid mix, and the violin melody was well needed. Interesting ending. I'll give this a YES -
17. Yes remove it 18. Yes 19. Yes 20. Yes The Counterstrike mixes were mixes of samples than anything else. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Didn't turn out exactly the way I thought it would, but I think it's interesting nevertheless. I look forward to hearing your constructive criticism.
