Very nice stuff. I wasn't too sure about it in the beginning, but it quickly grew on me. Very complex instrumentation, good stuff. YES

*NO* Alex Kidd in Miracle World 'Euro NEON Trance'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Is it me, or is the trance bass on this playing the wrong note all the time? Nevermind. Anyway, this is very very very very repetitive. And the ending is very messy. NO -
OCR00963 - *YES* Double Dragon 'Enter the Guru'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a very interesting mix, in that it had my stedfast attention throughout. The transitions are done well, I love the stereo snare sound, mixing is very good indeed. Drum programming was indeed impressive. I guess this is what happens when you spend four months on a mix. Four months!? YES -
I'm not sure that the distorted drum loop works with the other, much cleaner elements. This mix has a lot of reverb, and rather than being the hall type of reverb, it's more like a small room reverb - too much of that and everything sounds messy, not to mention the delay on everything. And what's that clicky panning sound near the end? NO

*NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Song of Storms'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I think the cymbal is too loud compared to the other instruments, but other than that, it's quite a good mix. It has repetitive elements to it, but there are enough drop outs and variations to counter that, especially considering the genre. I'm saying YES -
I think this too messy and over-chaotic to be on OCR. NO
-
Sounds ok, but I haven't heard the original. I'll come back to this once I've done a bit of research.
-
Now I haven't heard the original, but even so, this sounds like a rip. The guitars don't sound good. Nonononononono. Considering the sounds that the guitars are supposed to emulating, this lacks 'roughness'. NO

Hmmmmm... There are many issues with the mixing here. The piano hasn't got enough reverb on it and is too loud IMO compared to the drums, which are way in the background and have too much room reverb. Because of this, the instruments do not gel together at all, and the mix is empty and sounds unfinished. In addition, the tempo changes and instrument drop outs are less than graceful. NO This does not sound finished at all.

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Hopefully Endless'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The arrangement is very nice indeed. However the bells either need to go, or have a more interesting pattern as they do get very annoying after a while. Also could do with re-mastering to boost those high frequencies. I'm going to say NO Mostly because of the bells, they really spoil the mix. -
Some sounds in this are good, and others... not so good. Percussion sounds a bit weak. This might sound strange, but it seems that most of the sounds are thin, and were just relying on the reverb to fatten them up. This results in a thin, wishy-washy kind of sound. This really does drag on after a while. Then suddenly, at 4.22, it speeds up, and some messed up 007 theme comes in - it sounded well off to my ears. NO

OCR00958 - *YES* Arkanoid (NES) 'Black Block'

This mix has just enough goodness in it for me to pass over the fact that it uses 'gamy' fm synthy type sounds. YES -
*NO* Legend of Zelda 'Unwind (Spring Trance 2003)'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is extremely repetitive, the intro was too long, and the same parts just keep repeating again and again. That drum beat has also been done many times over. The synths are nice, and filters have been applied to some to try and keep the listeners interest. However, the mix is far too long and unchanging to avoid boredom. NO -
This mix is kinda thin sounding, it sounds like the bass frequencies have been rolled off or something. The guitar sounds good, but I'm not sure if it's played live or not, the timing is a little too precise. I can't really say much about this one, because there is nothing that jumps out as being really bad about it, but at the same time, nothing is really good about it either. I'm gonna go with my gut and say NO

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 2 'Turned Tides in Aqua Lake'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
In the first part of the mix the instruments playing the melody are more suited to playing basslines IMO. The instruments are quite good for the most part, although you haven't left yourself much chance for variation - the mix is only 1.29, and the song cuts off before the fadeout is complete! And wait, do I hear off-key notes in this mix? NO -
I'm liking this. Maybe some reverb on the snare? Nevermind, I'm just nitpicking. This one does it for me. Sweet and sad. YES
-
Midi pasted into program (fruityloops?), add a string line, some random toms, and a kick that goes on the 4/4 beat. After a while it feels like the kick is being beaten into your head. Uh-huh. NO
-
Nice sounds, effects, panning etc. But. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of off-key notes in this mix. It's like all the different parts from the different instruments came out of different songs. I think we have tone-deafness here. I imagine this would be a good mix if all the instruments were in tune with each other. But that is just speculation. As it stands, NO (Sorry!)

*NO* Final Fantasy 6 'It's a Hazardous Overworld'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I recognise this, one of my favourite FF tunes. The strings need more reverb on them, and the piano is also very dry. The sounds don't blend together as well as they could as a result of this, and therefore the song doesn't flow as smoothly as it should. NO -
Not bad, but this needs some reverb, and there is also quite a bit of clipping. Most of the instruments also need to be eq'ed so that they fit in with each other. Also, some parts are pretty repetitive. This could be a good mix. But as it stands now: NO
-
Very varied percussion, nice panning of the drums. Unfortunately, the melody is not really evolved from the orginal, and there were some parts where the texture could have been thicker IMO. As for the ending, well, it just cuts off. You could have extended the reverb on that last sound or used a cymbal. NO
-
NO This is just some beats with some random Game Boy samples thrown in. Weird? Yes it is, and it needs something that I can follow. There is just no form to this, no structure.
-
I must be harsh. NO
-
The distorted guitars don't help this mix out. At all. 2.01: What? Confusion! Hmmmm...... The percussion is very repetitive, and it gets somewhat annoying towards the end of the mix. 3.21 onwards. The mix is definately getting a no now. That is not the way to end any piece IMO. The remixer knows how and when to use effects, unfortunately a lot more practice is needed when it comes to arrangement and instrument implementation. NO
