*NO* Star Fox 'In a Dark Room with 1000 Metal Polygons' *FT*
Malcos replied to orkybash's topic in Judges Decisions
Hmmm, this is hard. I like the intro, but the piano that comes in later on is not very impressive. I like the vibe, but some notes don't seem to work together well. NO. I'm sorry to say no to this, but that piano really needs to be of higher quality on this occasion, because it is the weakest link, when it should be one of the strongest. -
I'm liking this a lot, although I expected some fat beat to come in. 2.50 - 3.20 I don't know, I think some notes are off-key in some places here, but I'm not sure. Ooooooo. I like the way that this is a chiptune mixed with some very nice piano. I'm saying YES, because although I'm not too sure about certain elements, it is original and will add some diversity to OCR, every little counts.

OCR00775 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Chocarena'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Well, at first I couldn't see what the fuss was about, but as the song progressed I could see why the mix was so well recieved by the rest of the panel. YES -
*NO* Space Channel 5 'Up Down Right Left Shoot'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Hmmmm... Well I did expect quite a bit of this mix, the intro could have been done better, but I did like tha panning of the voice samples in this remix. At 03.52 I had a bit of a giggle, the male voice sample was unexpected, and added some much needed variety to the mix. Well I vote NO. Not bad, but needs to be shorter, and it needed more punch overall with the beat. Needs to be mixed again as well, some aspects are too loud and need to sit more comfortably in the mix. -
My winamp was running in the background so I couldn't see the progress bar. I though to myself, that can't be the end of the remix. That was tooooooo short. I like the vibe though, but NO. This needs to be longer, no doubt about that.

OCR00767 - *YES* Bomberman 2 'Bomberfuzz' *FT*
Malcos replied to orkybash's topic in Judges Decisions
Hahah, this sounds soooooo much like Prodigy. But they happen to be one of my favourite bands. YES. BTW, this sounds very high quality IMHO. -
Yep, this has some potential. However, while the arrangement may be good, the samples used are not. This is also in need of reverb. 1.26 what? Ok, now the pizz is playing some next melody that does not go with the rest at all. This bit is very off-key. 1.50. Huh? It's gone really nice now. I like this bit a lot. This needs better samples overall, and I don't know what happened with the pizz between 1.26 and the 1.50 bit, but that pizz either needs to go away for that section, or another melody put in it's place. Needs some more work. NO

Hmmmm. I liked the intro, and then the song just didn't evolve any more than that, leaving me with the impression that the remix is more than sparse. I liked the drums a lot, and the other stuff was cool, there just wasn't enough of it. NO. This mix needs more instruments, more.

*NO* Chrono Cross 'Draconis Excommunicatus' *FT*
Malcos replied to orkybash's topic in Judges Decisions
This remix is like some women I know, it just doesn't know what it wants to be. I'm treated to a very bassy intro, and the rest of the song just doesn't have that bassy element to it. you get it in the beginning, and that's it. The distorted drums don't work with the other instruments, I think it's because of the particular drum samples used, they were too 'flat', particularly the snare, which could have been a little more on the high side. The mix then loses the drums, and goes sort of orchestraly thingy, sort of. The drums that come in are in stark contrast to the ones before, almost like it was a different song. The ending was kinda unexpected as well. A sudden piano chord all on it's own. I don't think it's too bad, but it could have done with some more appropriate drum work in my opinion. It also needs more work, with eq and stuff, and the remixer needs to be a little more consistent in approach. NO. -
OCR00780 - *YES* King of Fighters '96 'Psycho Rave'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Ok I can't get this either. What's wrong with me? It says click here, I click and I get sent to the same page again and I don't get the file. -
OCR00784 - *YES* Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 'Seaside Lullaby'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Oh, I can only get 15 seconds of the file, and thats the 2nd time I tried. GRRRRR!!! I'll try AGAIN tmmrw. -
OCR00769 - *YES* Zelda 2 'The Temple Revisited'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Extended low end with the kick, so the mix could have done with a bit more treble to extend the tops as well. The sounds used work well together, and I like the drum work. The reverb used was just enough to create the atmosphere that the remixer wanted. YES -
Damn. 1.54-2.20 was really nice - that was the only part of the song without the buzzing synth on top of everything. I liked everything else, but the buzzing really didn't agree with my ears. NO.
-
Oh yeah, you're right! Note to all: do not judge while under the influence of alcohol, however small the amount. (2 vodkas)
-
I like this, although some of the guitar samples are a bit dodgy. Anyway, YES. PS. I'm having some problems with the board thingy, it won't enable bold or big font size. I'll try editing my posts tmmrw.

Erm, the sound quality of this is good. But the mix is painfuly short. By the time I'd become used to the style, the remix was finished. The drums in this sounded like they were just bad loops, and they had no presence at all. NO.

*NO* Super Mario World 'Slap Bass Spellunking'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeah you heard that one off-key note with the main delayed synth. The strings that come in about midway need more reverb. Otherwise quite interesting, and I did like it. No off-key notes get past me I'm afraid. Not one! NO. -
OCR00757 - *YES* Phantasy Star 3 'Nial and Nowhere'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
YES. This is nice, although it faded out too early. -
Guess what I'm doing now? I'm dancing to this remix. But guess what? I'm gonna say NO. There is sooo much I like about this remix, but there are issues that really need to be resolved. For instance, there is a very audible click on the rave instrument that begins the mix. The bass synth should have been a simpler waveform in my opinion. In addition, there is a very strange kinda monster sample at 3.37 that I don't think works with the mix. The drum beats in this are awesome, and the instruments do work together to create a very dancey vibe. However, the rave sample really needs to be cleaned up if this mix is to be on this site. I don't say this very often, but I would very much like for this to be re-submitted.

OCR00748 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Ruined Skies'
Malcos replied to orkybash's topic in Judges Decisions
Oh 6 mins, that's a long one! I'm liking this drum beat, it's got vibe, and I really like the choir voices, it adds ambience. I'm not sure about the flute sound though, but it's probably just my taste. From Saunder's post I thought that something was gonna jolt at 4.08, but it didn't seem like that to me at all. The only thing I would say is that in general I find violin samples a bit tricky to use, because you can hear the vibrato rate change with each different note. YES. -
*NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Sand Covered Temple'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This was not bad, but I thought the synths were way too blippy and they had a lot of noise in them, I personally like 'clean' synths. More to the point, I didn't find it anything special really, and then ending leaves much to be desired. NO, although I would like to hear a resubmission. -
Aww come on mate. We're all Judge-tacular here.
-
This is groovy, but you know what, that kick has got to go. NO. Change that kick, and then I'll say yes. That's it. Please just re-submit this with a better kick.
-
I really, really like the drums on this, and it does sound live. However, the piano is practically crying out for reverb, and the mix overall could do with a bit of reverb too. A little on the repetitive, but does have some nice fills, and I like the guitar improv near the end. Fade out is a bit too quick. I'm gonna say NO, but I would like to see a revised version of this song.

OCR00729 - Streets of Rage "Going Up"
Malcos replied to Disco Dan's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice sound effects, they add ambience to the track. This guy knows how to keep the track moving and grooving. I like the strings, I can't put my finger on what have been done to them exactly. U gotta love that kick. Boom. This had been mixed quite well, as that kick does take up quite a bit of headroom at times. What else can I say? Cool.
