OCR00733 - *YES* Chrono Trigger 'What Hath Thou Done with This'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeah, this is cool. YES -
This sorta sounds ok sometimes, then the bass notes just all clash and it just goes blegh. This is VERY rough around the edges. Don't like the drum beat, it didn't really groove for me in the true sense. NO
-
Ouch, something is hurting my ears. Oh that's what it is, that high hat! It's a bit quiet, and nothing much seems to be happening. That sound (syn brass) that come in near the end of the song is kinda lamish. NO.
-
The arrangement is good, shame about the instruments. The string is not up to scratch, and the piano sounds like it's had all the life taken out of it. If the samples were better I would have said yes. But NO. It's a shame really.
-
I almost died with shock, disgust, and laughter at THAT 'instrument'. (Edit: the nasty synth clips at all frequencies. If some poor fool listened to this on headphones, they would be killed.) Hahahahahahaha, now it's on it's own!!!! This is some kinda joke. Blantantly. This can't even be real. Someone is obviously taking the piss. AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAH!!!!! You know what, this is sooo bad, I'm keeping this. Oh my GOD!!! I am in tears as I type this. I am laughing soooo hard. OH helli belli NOOOOOOO. This is just essentially bad.
-
Hahahahahah, this sounds soooooo midi wavetable. Got to give credit, the arrangement is quite good, except the drums, which are just too repetitive for me. The ending chord is cut off half-way, which is kinda lamish. NO. This has no polish, and is not up to OCR standard.
-
Yeah well it's cute, but the music box 'intro' goes on for faaaaaaarrrrr too long, I was beginning to think the whole song was gonna be like that. Drum sounds are a bit on the low key side. NO. It's more of a nah actually, it's not crap, it just doesn't work IMO.

*N/A* Dance Dance Revolution 4th Mix 'Dancing All Alone'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I am not able to download this at the present time. I'll try the link again later. -
Off-key notes in it. CUT. NO. You cannot comprehend how painful off-key notes are to me. Nothing can excuse it. I'll let someone else document every off-key bit, there are too many for me to be bothered to list. No sense of pitch AT ALL.
-
Oh the link works now. Looks like I'm about to tip the balance.... Bongos/congas samples sound good, but they're not in a realistic pattern. Nice, (I'm in the main part now) but bass seems a little overpowering, and the electric guitar is kinda stifled by it. Oh we're back to the intro bit now. Those drums that come in, don't like those - it's probably just a personal thing. Hmmm, this isn't an easy one, is it? Ok, the quality is good, a bit muddy around the edges, maybe some eq woulda sorted that out. It's got that deep feel to it, yet is repetitive at times. The distortion is there, but a certain amount is allowable for rock isn't it? I'm gonna say NO. Too much woulda shoulda coulda in this mix for me. Shoulda had a mad improvisation part in it somewhere, I was waiting for that.

I'm not at all happy about this, but I have been out-voted. So be it.
-
OI!!!! This remix cannot be posted, it is commercial. C-O-M-M-E-R-C-I-A-L. KO *Super Finish* Go into your Kazaa, and download "Children" by Robert Miles. Go to a MIDI site and look for "Children" by Robert Miles. http://clara.indosoft.net.id/cpr/MIDI/POP/miles/00index.html I know this was in Garou, but "Children" was released in 1996. http://www.aristarec.com/miles/milesbio.html I urge you, I implore you all, to think about this carefully. I don't know how and if SNK got the rights to use the song, but it was commercial before it was featured in the game. This issue already came up with the Star Wars mix a while ago.
-
I like the way this is done, although that organ sound is a bit lower quality than the rest. I'm going to say NO, because if the remixer worked on this a bit, reverb levels, etc. the mix would sound a lot more 'together', the instruments just don't gel at the moment. Erm, what's with that FAT gap of silence at the end?

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 2 'Ship's Hold Horror'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Damn, this mix is intense!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is soo full it just hits you like a fat combo!!!!!!! Now that I've recovered, whew - the 404 can be a very thick synth, depending on how you use it, and a lot of them have been combined together here, creating a thick layer of appegiated notes. You can just hear notes coming at you from everywhere, plus he's put a delay on. The drum beat is just as frantic, I like the snare sound. I think this comes down to personal preference, and although I like intenseness, I've (just!) realised that there is a limit, this might be too much for some. With careful mixing, this would be palatable to the casual listener! I'm not going to vote on this one, it's too hard 4 me! Sorry -
Hmm, interesting panning at the beginning? I don't know if it's just me, but I got the impression that the bass is just a bit distorted, especially at the beginning, like it was clipping or something. I like the way that some small sounds are used, they add detail to the mix, although the arrangement doesn't change that much. I'm not sure about this one, so I'm gonna say NO .This remix feels, how can I say it, forced.
-
Erm..... I've only got 1.04 minutes of this, and it cuts off hard, it must be geocities fault, I'll try again later. Btw, this is Garou: Mark of the Wolves, from the Fatal Fury series, not Art of fighting. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Should we let this remix through anyway? The song is basically 'Children' by Robert Miles, ie commercial, before it featured in Garou. Food for thought...

OCR00722 - *YES* Donkey Kong Country 'Jungle Stomp'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This mix has a lot going on in it, sounds like a jungle orchestra. Interesting flanger effects throughout the song, and it is put together very well, with the melody being played in different octaves, sound effects, and panning. The brass samples are ok, just about, and work well with the strings. You can tell that a lot of time was put in this mix, I think it came off well - it is very dynamic. I actually liked the Windy Waters, this is an improvement. YES. -
YES. I found this very original and interesting, although I disagree with the synth used for the melody in the beginning, it's too blippy. I like the chords used, they are very expressive, work well with the melody, and I think that's it's not low quality, it's his deliberate use of certain samples that might give the impression of low quality. The drums are using a quantise that I wouldn't use personally, as it's not all in 1/16, but it is in a rhythm. I know that on the surface, this remix seems a little strange, but if you listen closely, I'm sure you'll agree that the remixer at least knew what he was doing. And - I'm not crazy folks.
-
Nice quality instruments, and mixed very well. Typical techno beat, with a nice low, but not overpowering bass underneath. My only major gripe would be the repetitiveness, but the main theme is strong enough for the repetition to be ok. It's not anything new or particularly original, but it is OCR quality. YES.

OCR00719 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Cid in the Factory'
Malcos replied to m68030's topic in Judges Decisions
Yes yes yes yes yes, I like it harsh, this one satisfies my needs. YES!!! -
The first 2 seconds are great! The problem with this mix, as m68030 said, is with the mixing of the remix. This is where mixing skills would come in really handy, there needs to be some panning, some volume adjustments, and some riffs do clash with others, (there are some big sounds here). I would re-arrange some of this. I like the idea, this has groove, the right amount of reverb, and I like the drums. But it just hasn't got the polish. NO
-
Ok, here we go... Damn, if my speakers went below 40hz, I would be hearing even deeper bass than I am at the moment from this spooky sample (EDIT: He said he used no samples, whoops...) that is at the beginning of the remix. The drum beat seems a little too distant when it enters the mix. Is that bass ever so slightly out of tune at times? hmmm.... Then, just as I am beginning to get bored, it breaks down and begins to build up again....but it isn't building up a lot....still waiting....4.33, at last, oh but it's finished now. THAT was one of the biggest musical anti-climaxes of my life. That piece was not moving, and while ambient, did not hold my interest at all, as I waited in vain for a break from those pads that seemed to go nowhere. I have to say NO, because, while this sort of 'mix' would suit a game, it is far toooooo uneventful for one to be focusing on it alone. Can anyone say BORING?

OCR00715 - *YES* Tales of Phantasia 'Journey to Thor' *FT*
Malcos replied to Disco Dan's topic in Judges Decisions
This definitely has atmosphere! Just a personal thing here, but I think some of the instruments could have done with some more reverb, especially the staccato stuff. I like the choir voices, it really adds to the mix. Some of the drum sounds weren't 'sharp' enough, the snare sounds seemed to be muddy with the hats at times. Apart from that, I believe this piece achieves it's purpose. YES. -
OCR00718 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Oldschool Opening'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Well I can play the piano version of this tune, and I find it quite difficult actually. Anyway, for this remix, NO. While the drums are interesting (I'm not sure why, but they are). It sounds too blippy and doesn't feel like it lets the song evolve from it's original at all. Not only is it waaaay to short, but it doesn't even try to have the same effect as the original did.
