Instrumental & Vocal Skills (Other)

  1. Double Dragon 'Hammer's Garage' Sweet, Neostorm, this just kicks. Wah organ madness, and a beautiful array of other instruments. I especially love that whole organ solo thing at the end. I'm trying to think of anything I could possibly compare this to, but it's just not happening. I don't think I've heard anything using instruments like these before in my life. Excellent work, Neostorm, very unique.
  2. Hang-On 'Journey to the Finish' Night tight techno track, with racecar and announcer samples that seem to be obligatory in a remix of a racing game. Nothing too innovative, but enjoyable. If I had to nitpick one thing I would say that it needs a deeper bass.
  3. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Ice Attack' This is some solid trance here, people. Though I don't have time to rant about the merits of it, I'll just say that it's really enjoyable. That is, if you like trance, but from past experience of the general population at OC that really shouldn't be a problem. ^^ Me likes
  4. Phantasy Star Online 'Lobby Static' If you've read through my reviews, you'll know that I'm not a fan of static in mixes. This song is no real exception, although there isn't an abundance of loud static in the song, which is good as far as I'm concerned. Now see, this is all personal opinion but, to me, this song sounds like it's being held back. There are some parts where it seems the song is allowed to "shine through" (examples: 0:40, 1:10) but these shining moments don't last long before the song seems to be subdued again. Once again, only my opinion, but I felt as though the song would have been much better if, at 0:40 where the song was first allowed to break through, it had stayed above the static. It just feels to me that throughout the length of the song, it's struggling to be heard, to be seen. Was this intentional? Was Quinn Fox trying to portray this battle between music and static that perceive? Who knows. Personal Rating: 2/5
  5. Mario Paint 'bLiNd Is Dah BomB!' The intro to this piece is very odd. From there its a very cool sounding piece with a Techno beat, and it's got some very experimental sounds to it. Obviously, since I said techno and experimental in the same sentence, twice now, not every one is going to take to this piece, but give it a try, you never know. I do very much love the vocal samples and I wish they were more frequent in this song, but I suppose I can't have everything I want. It's interesting, and catchy, which is why I Love this piece. Good work, DJ Leifo (Ko Miho Leifo), keep it up.
  6. Mega Man X3 'House Hornet' Imagine this: you and your friends are playing a friendly game of D&D, when the party comes across a nest of giant bees. You, as the DM, set the tone of the encounter by looping the song throughout the entire, veeeerrryyy long encounter. Well, at least that's what I did, and you know what? None of the players ever got tired of the song! That alone should be a testament to it's greatness. And if all of that went over your head, this shouldn't: Very highly recommended. (and folks, in the 130+ reviews I've typed up, that's the first time that "very" has snuck in there.)
  7. Final Fantasy VIII 'Final Jungle Fantasy' Awesome experimentation with some very interesting sounds here, and that’s one extremely deep sliding bass. Excellent voice samples, and break beat drums to match. Doesn't sound much like the Rural jungle, but defiantly fits the Urban Jungle. Absolutely amazing, DJ Pheonix, I love it.
  8. Super Castlevania IV 'Castle Trance' I love the lone percussion at the beginning of this tune. It’s joined quickly by a more thumping kick drum I believe, and a strange sort of whistle sound. Then the full background kicks in. It does a little whistle-y repetition for a while, and at about 1:20 the real melody kicks in. The little harpsichord(?) almost-solo at ~1:35 made me smile. Strings and a sort of wind-chime sound bring the song back to normal shortly after. I like the main lead sample at this point. At ~2:40 the song changes to a very techno-y style for a little bit. Overall I liked this mix, not exactly memorable, but I enjoyed listening to it. 3/5
  9. Xenogears '7 Years Broken' Wheeeeee! Mr. Lloyd sings! Again… although this was the first time I’d heard him sing. Personally, I enjoy this mix. There’s quite a different take than the original in this mix. The background is much different, and the way he has of singing is better, in my opinion, than the original. I really enjoyed this track the first time I heard it, and the second, third, fourth, and all the times afterwards. I thought that whatever effect he used on his voice during the chorus was used well. The echo, which can be heard well in the quieter part at ~2:40, was also timed perfectly I felt. This is one of my favourite tunes on OC. 5/5
  10. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Ice Cap Zone (Frozen Knuckles Mix)' I love the intro voice sample. I love the bassline. I love the drums. I love the game samples. I love those strings. I love this whole gosh darn mix. Rayza really puts on an excellent show for us here and shows us just what is the fastest thing alive is. As a final note, I just have to say that damn frozen knuckles would hurt. Anyways, excellent work, Rayza, keep it up.
  11. Blaster Master 'TI Blasta Party' Pretty average techno here, and it has its share of problems. There's a lot of dissonance in here - some of it works well, some of it really tweaked my ear. Also, you can only use a flanging so much before it starts to grate, and that point is reached about 1 minute into this 4 minute mix. Ouch. And lastly, it just didn't hold my attention very well - guess it was too repetitive or something. Either that or I'm too tired to let anything hold my attention. Oh well. At any rate, sorry, but I really can't recommend this.
  12. Deflektor 'Laser Dance' Mr. Dodgers exposes us to a very happy blippy but cool mix from the game Deflektor. Ok panning here, quite a large amount of bass, and a good choice of instruments. Quite a few changes here too, although I probably would have preferred a few others to mix the song up a little more. It's a good listen, it's got fairly good mixing and the overall sound quality is pretty good. Synth orientated. I can't really think of anything else to say. Good work Chuck!
  13. Street Fighter II 'Tatsumakisenputronic' Awesome electronic sounds and it’s just the right length if you’re a fan of techno. I love the mood that is set by the chords and piano in the beginning that carries right into the high energy techno beats. The voice samples add an emphasis of power and strength that reflects the attitude of the game. An excellent mix DJ StarBLaSt, and well worth the download.
  14. Mega Man 'Set Me Up the Bomb Man' Someone give me a controller, I want to play some Mega Man. Mute the TV and put this on the stereo. Yes! That’s what I’m talking about. In case you haven’t already noticed, I suppose I should let you in on a little secret: I love this mix. The thing that gets me into the groove with this one is that bass line. It sounds like the authentic NES bass enough to bring back the memories of those old games (not that I ever played Mega Man in particular), while still adding enough sweet electronic spunk to make me want to dance. And by the way, it also hops into some awesome piano inserts a couple times, just to spice things up.
  15. Lemmings 'DABOMB' Short and sweet by dabombinc. Making use of a drum and bass type loop incorporating a voice sample to keep the groove, some smallish synths for the main tune and some nice reverb, the song plays along bringing loops in and out. Pretty standard stuff here, but it is well done, and some good panning is used. Keeps at a steady pace, not too fast, just right.
  16. Gradius 'Perfect Selection' Gradius has almost always had awesome music. Every single track is not a winner, but usually the music kicks ass. This mix starts out sounding like it was straight from the game itself. Then it starts sounding a bit better, but still sounds like an 8 or 16-bit game machine. It goes through some various Gradius tunes. If you like Gradius music you'll like this. If you want to hear some good videogame music from the late 80's you'll also want to download this. Melody is king.
  17. Ghosts'n Goblins 'Trance Version' This is from the Commodore 64 version of Ghosts 'n Goblins, which had far superior music to the arcade, even if it wasn't the most appropriate for the game. This ReMix takes that music and basically makes it sound ten times better. Has bell sounds throughout to add a bit of a haunting feeling to it. I like that. Makes it seem to fit into the G&G world a little better. I like what Instant Remedy has done here.
  18. Arkanoid '1999 (2000 Mix)' This is an arrangement from the Commodore 64 version of Arkanoid. Commodore 64 games often had original music that was nothing like their arcade counterparts. Encoded at 112 kbps, it does exhibit a few digital artifacts, but overall it is pleasant sounding and worth a listen. Techno-ish in nature, it holds your interest. Recommended, especially for C64 fans!
