Should my hands hurt/feel stiff when playing piano?

Recommended Posts

I was playing my piano earlier and I noticed that my hands were starting to hurt. Is this normal? Is it because I'm out of practice and it will go away if I keep playing and warming up my fingers or am I doing something wrong?

If it starts to hurt, STOP!

If your form is good and you're not overworking yourself, you should never feel pain.

You have to make sure you're using proper technique. Your hands should be shaped almost like claws, so make that shape as comfortably as you can and make sure to never rest your palm on the keybed. Eventually you'll get tired but there should be no real pain when playing the piano. If you're running drills for scales or finger separation then you'll get sore, but again no pain.
