Wiesty Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 It`s pretty hard to put a label on what is jazz and what isn`t. It`s less of a style or genre then it is a practice or school of music. Quote
Garrett Williamson Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 guys. Dirty Loops. for crying out loud. if you're not listening to Dirty Loops then something's wrong. http://youtube.com/user/DirtyLoops Quote
Wiesty Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 They've got some pretty neat stuff on their channel. Groovy! Quote
RealFolkBlues Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Bump. Also, Greyboy. Good stuff. Do you guys like acid jazz? I do. Quote
Kanthos Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Free masterclass from Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke available here. I watched it last night. They didn't answer many questions, but what's not to love about hearing Chick and Stanley play together, especially tunes from the Return To Forever and Light As A Feather albums, with Stanley on acoustic bass? Quote
Wiesty Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 I watched this, was pretty good! Yes, a lot of dumb questions were asked, but oh well, was fun getting to hear the two together. I saw Return to Forever in 2011 and it was fantastic. Quote
Nostalvania Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I somehow missed to post in this thread Well anyway, here's some Hardbop for ya http://youtu.be/wIiPyhQNSyg I love the trumpet solo (3:06), i used to sing it along with the recording. Quote
Wiesty Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 Oh man! Sonny Clark is the man Markus! I've got a couple of his albums on vinyl (including that one). Make sure to check out his trio with Max Roach and George Duvier. Bill Evans was good friends with Sonny and wrote a tune with a title that was an anagram of his name "NYC's No Lark" Quote
Nostalvania Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Good stuff. Actually, I didn't know Sonny until someone gave me the Cool Struttin' album. Quote
RealFolkBlues Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Bump. So, I got into this guy earlier this week. Pretty cool, methinks. He's a jazz pianist who takes influences from Armenian, Indian and other folk music, scat, and metal riffs. Very rhythmic music, for sure, which is great to me as a drummer, but I feel like he's got a decent sense of melody as well when he wants to bring it. Quote
Bowlerhat Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 My favourite jazzmusician is definitely Ibrahim Maalouf. Seeing him live a few months ago must have been the best concert I've been to in my whole life. He's a French trumpetplayer who blends Jazz with Arabian shizzle on a whole new level. It kind of reminded me of Tigran Hamasyan, but then a lot livelier and more melodic. Quote

Discovered this thread for the first time just now and the first post I see has already made me become a fan of somebody I had never heard of. All three of those tracks were awesome, but wow, that second one was killer! Quote
Deedubs Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I know that Pat Metheny's been mentioned a few times in this thread, but I wanted to mention his performance with the Metropole Orchestra. Here is their performance of "Proof": I think the combination of a big band and small orchestra creates such a cool overall sound. The arrangement is very well done too. I'm curious to know if there's anything else that has this kind of instrumentation. Quote
