Chimpazilla ⚖️ Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Good afternoon, I am submitting my remix "Chill Out, Smithy" for consideration for posting on OCRemix. Here is the file: Info: Remixer name: DarkDjinn Real name: (prefer not to use on OCR) email: User ID: 52307 Games arranged: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros. 3 Arrangement title: Chill Out, Smithy Songs arranged: "Battle With Smithy" from Super Mario RPG, "Chill" from Dr. Mario, "Airship" from SMB 3 Comments: This mix was made as part of the unofficial (and very early stage) Super Dr. Mario RPG project, and with reference to the plot of the story behind the project, is intended to serve as a final boss theme. I think of it mostly as a Super Mario RPG mix, but "Chill" from Dr. Mario plays a big role in the main melody of the song. All guitar and keyboard parts (save for the keyboard solo) were played by me. Bass, drums, etc. were all arranged on computer. Thank you in advance for your consideration, and I hope to see some good news regarding this mix. -DarkDjinn SMRPG: Dr. M: SMB3:
Liontamer ⚖️ Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Can't say I could identify anything resembling the SMB3 Airship theme, but maybe someone else will notice it. Not much of a flow/transition to Dr. Mario at :35, but I got used to it on repeated listens. Throughout the whole track, there's muddyness and lack of clarity that undermined the energy of the performance. The arrangement's pretty awesome and I thought the performances sounded strong for the most part. I'd like to hear a version with better mixing before we post it, but if we were unable to get it, I would have to lean YES (borderline). The mixing's bordering on mediocre, but the arrangement and strong performances barely tilt it to the point where I can't pass this up as is. If enough people make a strong case against it, I could switch my vote, as I DO want to hear a better version. YES (dancing on the borderline)
DarkeSword 🎮 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I'm feelin' this. Awesome arrangement, great performances. I'm hearing what Larry's talking about with some of the muddiness, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. Lots of energy, really good. YES
Emunator ⚖️ Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Larry, I think the Super Mario Bros. 3 source usage can be found in the rhythm guitars in the mix at :58 and 1:42, derived from :21 in the source. It's a liberal connection but I feel it's worth noting. Not that I would have had an issue with source usage on this mix regardless (there's plenty of it even discounting the SMB3 usage) but I definitely see where he got that from. This is a very strong submission that is carried by the strength of the arrangement, performances, and diverse instrumentation. You make use of some unconventional synth patches that aren't often heard in arrangements of this style, which layer nicely with the more traditional metal instruments. It keeps this sounding quirky and original in the spirit of the source tunes, while still hitting hard when it needs to. The muddiness that Larry points out is noticeable, but I don't feel as strongly about it to make a real issue of it. The drums and synths definitely could stand to be punchier, mixing-wise, but overall the balance is there and the mud is never so bad that it obscures anything important. There's room for you to improve on your mixing skills on future submissions but at the end of the day this gets the job done for me! YES
OceansAndrew Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Overall this is a nice mix of themes, with some solid playing, great energy, and creative arrangement ideas. I think the ending is a bit underwhelming as far as the mood, as it ends somewhat abruptly, but otherwise i'm on board. Yes
