I was sitting in my Studio an wanted to do something but i had no Idea. When i was looking at the DX7 (which uses the same Synthesis as the old DOS Games did) i thought: Hm.. lets remix Hocus Pocus Main Theme for OCRemix. Because it was already early Night i was too lazy to use my Hardware (because of the Connections) so i decided to use only Software. This might be groovy to play as a live performance for fun, but it comes across as rather basic and unfinished as a finalised remix. Beyond that, I'd go as far as saying this is pretty much just a cover of the mix. The melody that kicks in at 1:12 plays the same note patterns, just with shifted keys. Even the little breakdown melody at 1:31 is identical. The keychange at 2:31 was a nice touch. But once again the only thing that's changing in this mix is the key, it's still the same thing over and over. Don't get me wrong, this is still an enjoyable, groovy piece. I'm a fan of these kinds of mixes myself and I'll be keeping this one on my playlist. I imagine it would have passed back in the '00 and '01 OCR days. It's similar to an Ultima remix we had rejected here a while back. It's enjoyable, but it just doesn't fly under OCR's strict standards and guidelines on arrangement. The arrangement isn't too interpretive beyond the genre adaptation. After the lengthy lead-in, the part writing is just a cover with a nice groove. TO already broke it down. For those that AREN'T as familiar with the Euroscene, the sounds are a refreshing change of pace from the electronic stuff we normally get. But to me, the sounds, production and processing are serviceable but vanilla. Something with this level of production would always have a good chance provided the arrangement was strong, but that's not the case here. The production could stand to be more creative, the textures need fleshing out, and the arrangement needs more development and interpretation. While all the synths were generally OK, the rhythms were really basic for both the drums and synths. Very few changeups in that area - try varying up the drums more often to make things more interesting as the song goes on. In terms of sound quality, everything was OK by me except for the hi-hat which sounded very lo-fi. Try replacing that with something else. One way to personalize the arrangement is to write original material over the existing progression, or to put a new progression under the source tune melody (but vary it somewhat to fit). You can also try jazzing up the original melody and chords to expand on them. Either way, go for more. The production is good, and the soundfield is surprisingly full and enjoyable, so with a better arrangement you would be much closer to our bar. I like your choice of instrumentation; the pulsewave arpeggiations sound really cool. It's a little on the 80's cheesy side, but I think you can make that work even more in your favor with a more personalized resub. Hope to hear an update.
