Found (good) Tetris (Tengen) NSF. What to do?
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to SonicBlueTM's topic in General Discussion
I never noticed that chiptune tab thing until now. I dislike the term "chiptune" to refer to the original music. I think it is disrespectful to the original songs. As remixers we must respect the original music if we are to give the music the proper tribute it deserves. I still think the term "chip tune" is really non-descriptive except that it pretty much labels something as inferior. Does only apply to 8 bit audio formats, or can it be for 16 bit, or just anything that sounds old skool? Well, it seems like I unintentionally found something else about this site to complain about (I wonder if i'm the first person though). I know it's not really a huge deal, but I don't think labeling all original game music as "chiptunes" is a good thing. As far as your first post was concerned, I really still have no idea where you're coming from or what point you're trying to make regarding this thread. -
Found (good) Tetris (Tengen) NSF. What to do?
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to SonicBlueTM's topic in General Discussion
I completly misread and misunderstood your post. This nsf file is actual game music for a Tetris game released for the NES by the game company Tengen (the game was a black uniquely shaped NES cartridge). This version was different from the other Tetris in that it had different game modes including a 2 player mode. This is not a chiptune. People can feel free to remix it though. This was an awesome game with some great music. If what you found on the internet had been chiptune remixes then the only way you could get it put up on this site would be to contact the original artist and tell that person to submit to the site. The site submission policies and/or FAQ's should have more information. -
VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
Not really. Several of them still have comments intact.SPOILERS BELOW I especially love the one that says "Background music is a remix of Metalman's Theme from the NES game Mega Man 2; This arrangement is titled "Smooth Metal" by Zircon; original lyrics by Ghetto Lee Lewis and Reece Regino, performed by Ghetto Lee Lewis, final production and mastering by Ghetto Lee Lewis" Yours is recognizable too, as well as Flik's and 2p's. You should edit the tags better lol, just don't read the tags. It's not like I'm going to win this anyway. We got a lot better entries than I expected (I was expecting computer nerds from the internet who can't hold a note who own $5 mics or headsets). Also, this compo gave me a lot of ideas. I'm definitely going to try a different style next time. -
lol, me too. I hope you're doing some ridiculous orchestra remix or random awesome solo piano improv thingy. I'm thinking about participating on this one. For a weird/random futuristic thingy game we need more techno kind of stuff, and I need more excuses to actually make music. I thought the OST was more abstract compared to the other FF games (hence one reason I didn't care much for FF7); I think there's still a lot you can do with certain genres though.

Where can I find this??? Better yet, which AMV is it on?

VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
Sounds like the last-minute ill-prepared thing I submitted early this morning was at least halfway decent. At least I know how to use Audacity and FL Studio to clean the vocals up a bit (although not enough free time to do a great job with them). It helps having a somewhat clean recording setup also (I used a Samson CO1U USB condensor mic and a pair of closed-type airline headphones, probably about the best someone can do for under $100 ). Sadly, I think I've heard your remix before.... I've been wanting to do something to satirize all the boy bands and RnB that's been made during the last 15 years or so. If only most of that music wasn't so blatantly homo-erotic already.... (and a lot of artists have come out of the closet already; we're still waiting for a few more). I see this competition as an invaluable resource for getting remixers and performers together, since we'll have so many vocal samples to work with. On that note, I think each round of this contest should have a varied genre in order to attract different types of singers. I know I wasn't really that comfortable with the style of background music. With all the variety of music on this site, it shouldn't be difficult to get different types of arrangements for this compo. Also, I think we should have a different guest remixer make music for each compo (not that I necessarily dislike Zircon's music, but variety is usually a good thing). A good way to find a remixer could be whoever had really good production quality in their submission, or else people that show interest in this thread, or whatever. If it becomes controversial there can be a way to decide who will arrange the next song; maybe voting or another competition, or whatever. Overall, I think there are far too few OC Remixes containing quality vocals. Hopefully this competition can change that in the future. I don't really know how future rounds of VOCR will be, but I think the rules need to be changed a bit from time to time. I think what effects are allowed depends on the genre, but should be restricted, i.e. autotune allowed for techno, not allowed for classical, etc. I think the winner of each round should get to have a say in how the next round will be different also. Cool prizes are nice and all, but the point of this competition should be to have fun and actually make some decent music. lol, I'm ranting way too much; I'm just getting extremely bored at work. -
Mods: List of spammers w/ links & search terms
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Drack's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
The small forums I was moderating was probably getting 5 or 10 spam posts per day, and that was with me deleting every new registered bot every 3 or 4 days (yes, I actually went through every new registered user with 0 posts and looked to see if they looked like a bot). We had about 20 new bots (and still do) registering for the forums each day. I got so tired of deleting so much crap I eventually disabled account activation by e-mail. New users have to get an admin to activate their account. I'm happy to report we've been spam free for several weeks. I'm surprised these forums haven't gotten a lot more spam. The mods must be doing a really good job of keeping on top of it here. -
VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
I couldn't finish the lyrics until about Thursday night (with help from a friend) due to getting sick constantly, a full time job, and college final exams. Two days was just not enough time to practice and record this, especially when I have visiting family from out of town for the holidays and working at my job. I'm excited and thinking I should be able to finish something by the new deadline. Count me in! Zircon, is this going to be the final arrangement for the song you're submitting to OC Remix, or are you going to make a longer version or change it a bit? The problem I have is that I have three verses written, but your arrangment is rather short, only long enough for two verses. Just to be safe you had better get the winner's permission before submitting to the site, and perhaps working with them to make sure they have a complete song (not that I'm actually expecting to win this thing ) -
VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
I think the file name should be whatever the heck you want as long as there is a proper id3 tag (keep the filename within reason and not 13413243 characters long and start it off with the singer/songwriter name). example: gll_awesome_singing_compo_thingy_1_Iamgonnawinthisthinghahahaeverybodyaresuckormaybenot.mp3 The id3 tag will simply be: artist: zircon ft. gll; title: probably something to do with the lyrics, put in comments the name of the original song "smooth Metal" or whatever. If it's like a mega-collab (singer, songwriter, backup vocals, etc.) then write in the comment section of the id3 so we can figure out who made the song. good idea; that way everyone won't vote for me because they know my awesomeness (or vote against me because no one really likes me anyway). I don't need to talk shit. I just back it up. -
VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
Good luck executing it. You may be finished, but if you can't sing, it's still going to be garbage. Hey, I'm just being hypothetical. I'm sure you got a good chance at this compo. I haven't even started the lyrics, so I'll probably be rushing this thing a bit towards the end of the three weeks. -
VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
I just listened to the song we're working with on this one. It definitely sounds interesting enough to work with. I was worried it was going be like a 5 minute song, but 2:30 definitely sounds like something I'd have time for. This sounds like something that would be fun to mix also. Expect a lot 80's style reverb and delay effects. -
VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
This compo came down reallly fast. I just noticed the other thread this morning (with the vocal compo idea). Put me down as a contestant. I will TRY to get something down by the deadline, if I can work time around finals exams, work, girlfriend; and if I feel like I can work with Zircon's tune that I haven't listened to yet. I think three weeks really isn't that long for a performance contest (as opposed to creating sequenced music). People need time to train and prepare for these things. It's going to be tough just coming up with complete lyrics by the deadline, let alone practicing and recording it. I have pretty low expectations of what people will be able to do in that short amount of time. Talent is really going to come into play here. Good luck people -
Sorry about the huge delay (no, the next compo isn't started yet). I know this compo hasn't been known so far for running on time. I have final exams this week and next so things are really hectic (keeping a full time job, full time girlfriend on top of that). I still haven't forgotten though. I do plan on hosting this next compo before the year is over.
-
I haven't checked this thread in like 2 or 3 weeks, been so busy with work and stuff. Honestly I didn't expect #1 on every vote. I'm really flattered though. I expected a close competition from Projekt Zero. I really liked his mix! I'll try and organize the next compo as soon as I can. Expect a ridiculously awesome compo for FLMC 5!

Program Choice / Other Items
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to SmSml's topic in Music Composition & Production
That's what one would think if they hadn't been paying any attention the last couple years. ACID Pro now runs midi and vsti pretty well. And it is still the bizniss for audio manipulation. Actually I probably haven't used Acid Pro for at least 3 or 4 years. Maybe I should try it out again sometime. I really need to check out Project 5. It sounds like a wonderful piece of software. So we can just throw mixing out the window when using Reason? SOLD! Actually, that's not quite what I meant. Once you get to an advanced stage of mixing, I think Reason makes things a whole lot more difficult, although both pieces of software pretty much have the same capabilities (although there is still not a way to control the tempo of a song in Reason, at least that I know of, without controlling it through another host program through Re-Wire). The sequencer in Reason is god-awful (you can hardly distinguish piano roll notes, etc.), and tying sequencers and effects to each other and side-chaining becomes this nightmarish mess of separating and merging audio channels and messing with little cables on the back of the machines. The Fruity Loops "Mixer" makes things wonderfully simple. Also, FL piano roll ftw. -
Program Choice / Other Items
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to SmSml's topic in Music Composition & Production
Propellerheads Reason is easier for making decent sounding mixes. Fruity Loops (FLStudio) is easier for making something crappy to start with; to make Fruity Loops sound better than Reason takes a lot of work and knowledge about mixing, but it is very possible. Anyone with the skills and knowledge can make just about any piece of software work for them. There are also the higher end more professional programs like Cubase, Logic, Sonar, etc. However, aside from the numerous extra features and improved sound quality, expect the learning curve to be much higher. Sony (formerly Sonic Foundry) Acid is used for making loop-based music. You put a bunch of sampled loops together that other people made. In my opinion it's not really making music, but it's probably the easiest way to do it. You could make music entirely using a multi-channel wave editor like audacity, and record stuff with it (and it's a free program also). -
FF2 - The Rebel Army WIP (BIG UPDATE 10-21-06)
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to SSB's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Haven't listened to the WIP yet, but I'm very interested in this song. I played through that miserable excuse for game (it's FF2J for Famicom, that's the Japanese NES thingy). I recognized the title; it's definitely one of the best songs from the game. -
POST COUNT = 1000!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111ONEONEONEONEONE ok, I finished my entry. I apologize for the lateness; I have been extremely sick the last few days, and have a ridiculously busy schedule. Here is my entry: The Music!!! mirror1: GLL on Myspace The FLP file!!! (requires FLstudio 6) I remixed Seven Chiropractor Cat (Fifa's Theme) if anyone couldn't figure out from the title. KTHX! Good luck to everyone. I'm guessing that this competition may be the closest we've had yet.

Welcome to new judges, Big Giant Circles and pixietricks!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to zircon's topic in Announcements
This has to be the wittiest thing I've read all day. I know I haven't been getting along well with DJP lately, but he's beginning to grow on me once again. I'm not quite sure how to respond to this. Even if this is completely sarcastic (which it most probably is), I'm still flattered that someone is paying attention to me. If you're being serious, I have to admit, I don't feel ready for such great responsibility. If I were getting salary that would be different, but I otherwise I don't have nearly enough free time to get anything done. ROFLTASTIC I'm not really sure how my "tirade" that had so little to do with this topic got so much attention. I would like to think it had to do with my main point of the judge selection process. I'm really amazed at the decisions being made on this site since I started paying attention to what is going on. It's true, I don't like BGC's music, and it is also true that I would consider myself a qualified judge candidate based on what I deem to be high quality standards; and based on my experience. It's always difficult to talk about yourself on a public forum without sounding "self-important". I try at least (I seem to fail often though) to respect others, even if I disagree or don't like them. However, I would always rather be honest rather than butter people up or go along with what other people think. My point is really that I don't feel the judge selection process is fair to the users of this website. By users I mean people that download and listen to remixes from here and also people that frequent the forums (I don't mean the people on the judge panel; I respect the hard work they do to keep this place thriving). I am aware that DJP runs this site, that he maintains it and pays whatever expenses can't be covered by advertisements. However, due to the amount of traffic this site gets, I believe that DJP and other people maintaining this site have a responsibility toward its users and listeners. What started as an idea has grown to a thriving community with thousands of forum-goers, and millions of listeners. There was a time when I myself would download each and every remix from the games I played growing up. I would bask in the nostalgia, and feel giddy with excitement when I heard one of my favorite tunes re-arranged and produced in a styel that I enjoyed. I owe it all to DJP for organizing this idea and making it possible, for all the hard work he did so that other people could realize their own dreams. My biggest concern is for the future of this site. I have been visiting here since its early stages, and fear that over time, DJP my lose sight of why this site exists. I feel that it is important that the site's users have a say in this site's future, because without its users, this site won't have a future. For starters I would suggest is that there be another way ordinary users be involved in the judge selection process. I think a reviewing competition would be entirely appropriate and extensive. I see a huge problem with hand selecting people in that the best candidates for judges (I'm not talking about myself) may not be extremely active on the site. When there are people with over 15,000 posts to their name, it is extremely easy to overlook people. I think the fact that BGC was nominated is an example of this flawed process (I'm not talking about whether or not I think he's qualified); hardly anyone knows who he is. For that reason I'm amazed how the judge panel even knew about him well enough to select him, if not for his remixes on the site. I apologize if this post sounds self-important and apologize also if it's too long to read. Let it be known that I truly care about the future of OC Remix. On another note: I think maybe BGC and me should do a collab! -
Welcome to new judges, Big Giant Circles and pixietricks!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to zircon's topic in Announcements
The 11 candidates were nominated by members of the panel, and a percentage of those actually wanted to be considered for the spot. If we think a mixer or an active member in the community is suitable, we'll contact them, not the other way around. Draw whatever conclusions from this that you wish. Im guessing you guys arnt going to tell us who the other candidates where. Well Chuck Norris and the O'Rly owl were logically the first choices, but the owl didn't know what was going on, and Chuck Norris roundhouse kicked his phone before he could answer it. We were afraid to contact him via the internet because he might roundhouse kick the internet. -
Welcome to new judges, Big Giant Circles and pixietricks!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to zircon's topic in Announcements
That makes no sense, and it doesn't answer my question. There has to be some communication between the people that want to be judges and the judge panel, or else there wouldn't be judges. I'm only wondering where the 11 nominees came from. I would assume there are a lot more than 11 selectable candidates on this site, probably of whom would be interested in the position. I'm only concerned that the right decision was made (not that I'm saying it wasn't), as judging is a very important position and carries a lot of responsibility. Let me make it clear that if I was ever offered the position I would probably be tempted, but I don't think I would want to handle that kind of responsibility, so I'd have to turn it down. -
Welcome to new judges, Big Giant Circles and pixietricks!
Ghetto Lee Lewis replied to zircon's topic in Announcements
I hope you're a lot better judge than a remixer. FLMC3 was omgwtflol. I don't have doubts about Pixietricks since she's a classical trained musician. Then again, I don't go to the WIP forum anymore and rarely listen to any new mixes (I'm sure FLMC 3 was supposed to be a joke or something, right??) Actually I'm curious as to how the 11 people were selected. Do the judges contact the people that seem like good candidates, or do people who want to be judges PM the panel? Regardless, I don't think I'd be a good edition for the following reasons (although I asked DJP for the position a few years ago): 1) I don't like the people running this site (or most of the other users even). 2) I'm not that interested in videogame music anymore. 3) My reviews/critiques tend to be unusually harsh, unpredictable, and different from most other peoples'. 4) I don't have nearly enough free time as what's required to go through every submission on time. 5) I don't think I could keep my sanity for very long listening to that much amateur (mostly n00b sounding or completely sh*tty) music. Besides I'm sure no one cares what I think about judging, or the panel, or the new members. Quite frankly, I'm not really that interested anymore since I don't have the time or interest to download every new mix here. I have some vague plans to start submitting mixes here again, so it would be in my best interest to know everyone's judging style (the same thing for every other remixer here). Anyway, congratulations and good luck Pixietricks and BGC. I hope you guys help make this a better site through your contributions.
