  1. Right click and select "automate" I think. Make sure you keep track of which pattern you automate. Also some of these sound like default sounds. Try building your own synths, and eq'ing and mixing them properly. Also, this arrangement sounds like a pretty generic techno mix. It needs a lot of work to make it interesting. The bass sound gets annoying pretty fast, and you seem to re-use that intro sound effect pretty often as a transition. The drums sound like they're not mixed at all. The kick should be eq'd and compressed to sound bigger. The high hats need to be eq'd to make them sound more interesting and stand out more (crispier and more energetic). You should probably compress the bass along with the kick (after you eq the bass and get it to sound better). The pads sounds really odd with the cutoff envelope shape. Try building your own pads from choir sounds and saw waves (slow attack, but not too slow, long release, eq them to sound warm; boost up low mids and turn down the other frequencies; add some chorus/flanger for a fatter sound, probably finish them with some reverb/delay).
  2. It's not really my genre preference, but it seems like a smooth mix. You said "Drums and Bass" and I was thinking "DnB". I really like a lot of the sounds used in this song (although I hear a bit too much distortion, clipping maybe? on some of the pads). This could easily be made into a more upbeat version or used as background music for a space shooter game.
  3. Hi, I do male vocals, can sing both baritone and tenor, and have been mixing techno for a long time. Your groove is pretty smooth, but it's still very minimal. I think you should flesh it out more. It might give the vocalist a better idea of what kind of style you're looking for. I have samples, but they were lost when my other computer crashed. I'll try to get some new samples recorded. I mostly sing Josh Groban, (i.e. "You Raise me Up"), but have sung more upbeat poppy stuff also (i.e. Elton John; Journey, etc.). I can probably sing anything if I work enough at it. My vocal range is from baritone E up to tenor high C with full chest, although my B flat is much more comfortable. I can sing pretty consistently from alto D to soprano A with the head-voice/falsetto (mixed voice probably up to the F), and sometimes up to soprano high C; In the morning I can usually hit the low C, so I can pretty much span 4 octaves. Of course, this is all when I'm in good practice. ;p This seems like kind of an odd song choice to do a remix of. I prefer the song "Against All Odds" (although people have already remixed it to death). It's definitely going to take a lot of work to be able to sing it, considering I've never even heard the song before. I'm not sure of the range of this song, but Phil Collins usually goes pretty high (my voice probably isn't quite whiney enough to sound like him ;p).
  4. Technobob sounds oldskool, well-mixed, and fun to listen to. I don't hear any major issues with it, well, at least the first minute. I don't really care for some of the synth sounds and the arrangement towards the middle of the song (although it's still decent enough to keep my interest). I do like the section around the 2:20 mark. It sounds really smooth and funky. I like the little percussion break at the end. That's a nice way to end the song (would like to hear a longer ending though). Funky Operator sounds really cheesy, but it's cute. I actually enjoy listening to it. It reminds me of some of the old DOS games, like Lemmings. This music is actually good enough to be used on a game soundtrack (if only they still made games for DOS). I would love to see it used in a Flash game or something. You should definitely keep making music like this if you still got the right tools to do so. Game developers are always looking for fun and creative music like this to add to their games. You might even consider posting this one to the newgrounds.com music section. Someone might decide to use it for their game.
  5. Have you tried overdubbing saxophone over any of the piano melodies? I'm a pianist myself so I can see great potential in your music. I find it easy to flesh out ideas out of 3 or 4 note melodies. You seem to have a solid background in jazz/pop, but I suggest you take advantage of your main instrument as much as you can. I only listened to the first track, but you definitely have distinct ideas going on (think of it as musical brainstorming). I hear potentially two or three different songs at least out of just the first track. While you could definitely make any one of those tunes into a piano solo piece, I would definitely suggest trying to add some more instruments in there, especially if piano is not your main instrument. However, definitely stick with it. I think you have a lot of potential to be an accomplished pianist as long as you keep practicing. You've definitely got some musical talent going on.
  6. Mystic Cave: Well, sounds like anything but a "mystic cave" type of theme (although I'm not too familiar with the source). I hear some dynamic issues. Correcting most of these will make it less blatantly obvious to the listener that this a sequenced orchestral arrangement. The flutes in general sound too loud. I can barely hear the bass/cellos (the ones playing the bass line). They definitely could use some stronger attack for more oomph. Some of the percussion doesn't sound right. The cymbal splashes/crashes should be louder. The gong should be much louder. The harp is probably a touch too loud (harp is not a loud instrument). The brass could be louder (it is brass after all). I'm not quite sure how a glockenspiel overpowers an entire trombone section. A glockenspiel is a relatively small and weak instrument. The piccalo towards the end sounds a bit annoying. Maybe the sample is bad, needs sharper attack, and some eq to make it fit in better. Arrangement-wise, this piece seems pretty solid. It's very thematic, and you seem to have a solid understanding of orchestral scoring. However, it needs much work on the mixing side. Water-zone: I'm not familiar with this source material either, but the first minute does sound like a midi rip. It doesn't sound like something that would actually be played on those particular instruments, it sounds very mechanical (non-human), and you seem to overcompensate the bad samples by adding tons of reverb. The water-death song is quite nice, but has a couple of issues. I think the gong sounds out of place playing by itself at the end. Maybe you could use a trumpet to simulate a drowning noise or something. The song that follows the water death seems much like a midi rip also. The instruments don't sound mixed well, and with all the reverb, bad attack/decay times, it sounds very muddy. The Mystic Cave song is a much better production overall.
  7. This whole song has tons of reverb on it. I half expected to hear some 80's vocals on top of it. I definitely think some vocals would sound good with this. Other than that I hear some other mixing issues like clipping; some sounds seem a bit loud, etc. This is definitely a creative arrangement though. It's funky and fresh.
  8. I hear like 3 different songs. It sounds like you're trying to do too much with it. I see some great potential though. I really loved the acoustic part in the beginning and I liked the DnB part. The gamelan sounds so awesome. I think maybe you should incorporate the acoustic part into a DnB song and make it sounds less electronica. At least maybe the DnB part should sound a bit more evil. It's pretty crazy nonetheless. =)
  9. Listening to 1.9. I must say it's been a long time I've reviewed anybody's music besides my friends'. Beginning of the song, I don't care for the clap sample. I don't really like the kick either (maybe it's not strong or big enough), but it's not as bad as the clap. I do like most of your synths throughout the song. They sound quite nice, although sometimes you seem to have too much going on with sounds that don't sound different enough (playing in the same register). When the big beat kicks in you don't really have anything leading to it. The song quickly picks up to having a lot of energy. Actually the transitions toward the middle of the song start getting better. I like the pads/choirs towards the middle. The synth you have playing the main melody is kind of irritating. It doesn't seem to flow very well with the rest of the song. Besides that screechy synth and accompanying arpeggios I really don't hear much of the main melody. Parts of this song sound really good to me, but overall it just doesn't seem to flow very well. Maybe you want to do too much with it and it's not really structured that coherently. It sounds to me like you know quite a bit about mixing, but really need to work on your structure/transitions. I would love to hear the main melody much earlier in the song with a better sounding lead (some of the other sounds you got are just great). I wish I could be more specific, but there's really just too much I could say about this. You've done a lot with it, but it needs a lot of refining. Hope that helps. FYI, I'm listening on headphones (Sennheiser HD 202's).
  10. This is more of a remix of a remix than anything, but figured that was close enough to post it here. Prophecy was the first one to hear this version after I recorded it (even before I listened to it myself). I believe the original melody from Donkey Kong Country is in here somewhere. ;p Anyway, here is a classical piano solo version of Chekan Winter. It is recorded in mono, and it is 20 minutes long (and the playing is really sloppy, in my own honest opinion). Obviously I'd have to scale it down and probably get the piano tuned at least if I'm going to submit it to the site (and change the title to something appropriate). I've been doing quite a bit of piano and vocal work lately (but mostly piano). It's a fun change of pace. Anyway, not sure if people really care for this kind of stuff or not. Nonetheless, enjoy! https://www.yousendit.com/download/UmNLQ3QvYWJZY1EwTVE9PQ will stay uploaded for one week http://ocrwip.fireslash.net/?a=GLL_DKC_Chekan_Winter_piano_version will be available for 3 weeks, and you can stream it here.
  11. I recorded a piano medley of the ending from Zelda: A Link to the Past waaay back. Actually I played another piano medley at a coffee shop for open mic night. The songs I played were Zelda 1 Underworld, Zelda's Theme (from LttP and Ocarina of Time), main theme (Zelda 1, LttP). I've also messed around with the palace theme from Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link and the Dark World Theme. Come to think of it, I think I may have played some other tracks from OoT and Majora's Mask as well. I haven't played any of the Game Cube or Wii releases, or else I would probably try the music from them also. If you want a specific track list, or just want me to play the ones I think will sound good together, let me know. Here is a recent recording of my playing (recorded this morning with lack of sleep, just started learning the song yesterday, lol). https://www.yousendit.com/download/U0d3eFljckk4Q1JMWEE9PQ It's the castle theme from Super Mario World. Sorry, but I'm stuck with a lousy recording setup and an out-of-tune piano. Actually though, my main genre is trance, has been for a long time. My very first remix was a trance version of the Zelda 1 main theme (although I never submitted it to this site; it's long lost although you might be able to find it somewhere on the internet).
  12. I wasn't sure if you got my private message from the other day. I just discovered this topic yesterday and was wondering if you're still working on the movie. I started working on a little doodle. See if this is what you had in mind: https://www.yousendit.com/download/U0d3eFljckk4Q1JMWEE9PQ I've been playing piano for about 12 years. I can play something much cleaner if I practice a bit. note: it's temporary space, so if you try do download after March 10, PM me or e-mail me for the file. Sorry that it's in mono, but I only have one microphone to use with this setup. This is played without any sheet music, not even a chord chart; that's why some of the notes and rhythm is funky.
  13. Hey, do you have a timeline for this Super Mario World project? I used to be a classical pianist, playing Beethoven, Rachmaninov, etc. but I'm a bit out of practice (been working on singing and playing more pop music kind of stuff).

I'm definitely interested in possibly playing for the Ludwig Von Koopa scene. Unfortunately I've got a simple mic setup and an out-of-tune piano, so it's not going to be studio quality. I'll try and send you a sample and see if it's what you're looking for. I'm assuming you want a style similar to Beethoven's. I'll see what I can come up with.

  14. That was a fun game for a while. I never played the N64 version. Can I remix this as an opera song? rofl Birds are singing, cows they go moo Chickens are happy, cockadoodle doo running round a picking vegetables yay! everyone is singing tralalalala now it's raining I don't have to water veggies time to get the eggs to sell for monies, monieess, moooonniieessss! If someone can come up with lyrics that are less stupid and/or gay feel free to post them. Upon request, I can record this in German also (someone babelfish it for me, lol). I normally sing tenor, but felt like singing baritone for this one. It will only be on the internet for 7 days. I would prefer not to leave it up longer (lest it leek to one of those horrid online radio stations). http://download.yousendit.com/050831F265817247
  15. Ok, so switching #1 and #2 and this thing could maybe work? We could splice this in with another compo to use songs that have already been remixed, but maybe it would be easier just to have a separate compo. If anyone else has any other ideas then I can get this thing finalized and submit it to The Orichalcon. I know it sounds complicated but once every compo gets their own thread it will make a lot more sense. Alternatively I can just get some remixers together to make music for a song-writing + singing compo and forget about having another remixing contest (aren't those over-done already anyway?). Thanks for the feedback. I know that there was a vocal compo a while back on these forums, but it only lasted for one round. I would love to get things started again, but I want singers to not have to write their own lyrics, since it'll force people into singing a certain style of music. Furthermore I'm thinking about a singing compo that specifies the style of singing, so we can distinguish the really versatille singing talents (sort of like karaoke, lol). By the way, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post on this board, since we are only discussing the possibility of a new compo. If this thread must be removed, please send me a PM and move it to General Discussion or wherever else is appropriate.
  16. I came up with an idea just now of a competition that combines song-writing, singing, and music production. Basically I am looking for an excuse to practice my singing and get out of my rut and back into making music. I seem to have all but lost my creativity and have never been a good song writer. However, I believe this type of competition would be a great outlet for many of the great talents on this site. This will be a multi-category competition. The winner from each section will decide the theme for the next competition. The winners can be voted on through either a panel of judges or from anyone registered on the forums who wants to vote. 1) Poetry/Song Writing competition: pick a very basic theme or idea (like one or two words) and write a long poem or song based on that idea. Example: Jew, Shoe. This will probably be an entirely public vote, unless there so happen to be poetry experts on this site. 2) Vocal arrangement music competition: This contest will require someone to remix a videogame tune or use a theme-based competition. The winner should have a fully fleshed out, well produced piece of music. The only restriction is that the song should make room for singing. The winner of #1 will decide the length of the verses, chorus, bridge, etc. See #3 for more details. Example: Super Mario Brothers 1 Dungeon theme (the level with the lava, not the underground theme). 3) Singing competition: You get to sing the lyrics/poem from the winner of compo #1, with the winner from #2 as the background music. The winner of compo #3 will have their vocals fully produced by the winner of compo #2 in a fully produced vocal song. In addition if there are runner-up vocalists who sounded decent enough they can be included (at their request) in the final production as back-up vocalists. Please keep in mind recording quality is a huge factor of this competition, not just singing quality (especially when it comes to high noise levels). 3-a (optional) Instrumental solos: If you would like to participate but don't feel confident in your singing voice, you may record an instrumental solo and submit it. If appropriate the winner of #2 may choose to include it in their song. Time restrictions: probably will vary depending on participation. One week to one month should be adequate. The first compo should be a bit shorter just to get things going, say, one week. For example: week 1: poetry contest week 2: voting on poetry contest week 3: poetry contest #2, music/remix contest week 4: voting on poetry contest and remix contest week 5: poetry contest #3, music/remix contest #2, singing contest week 6: voting on all 3 contests week 7: poetry contest #4, music/remix contest #3, singing contest #2, complete music production of winner from singing contest #1 week 8: voting: poetry #4, music #3, singing #2 week 9: poetry #5, music #4, singing #3 production of round 2, week 10: voting week 11: new round, production of round 3 winner ... and so on So each contest will lag behind the last contest, but songwriters, singers, and remixers can combine their efforts in a mega collab competition. Furthermore, competition #2 may not be restricted to just singing, but maybe also for instrumental performers. Anyone with talent and a means to express it (and record it) should have a chance to shine here. If this competition gets going then each section of the competition will have its own thread to avoid confusion. To organize this thing better it will probably have the title of Mega Music Collab or MMC. For example for round 1 you will have MMC-Poetry 1, MMC-music 1, MMC-Vocal 1. That will keep every piece of work consistent as to what round it fits into. The final production for MMC 1 will include all three winners and give proper credit to each. Hopefully I would like to host all the complete productions of the winning songs and maybe compile some sort of archive out of them. Special voting rules, because this is a collab competition effort, the winner of each section will have a special weighted vote on the other sections. They are not required to vote, but it is highly recommended that they do so. For example, the winner of the poetry contest may get a vote of 20% on the music contest and 20% on the singing contest. The winner of the music contest may get a 25% to 50% vote on the singing contest. This will ensure that people will not be forced to work with a person who's style they highly disagree with, unless they are a clear winner (based on the other votes). It is possible to win in all three categories, although it is probably unlikely. In the case that a person wins one category and is an entrant in another category for the same round their vote will carry less weight if they vote for themself. Please post your comments here. I will probably be willing to host this competition, but if someone else wants to get this thing going, feel free.
  17. Hi, I'm still alive! I just have been doing very little in the way of music the last several months/years (I'm not good with time lately). Anyway, here is a little WIP I started tonight. I'm testing a few things trying to get back into mixing. http://download.yousendit.com/C88EDABE1E38BC9F Yes, it's 7 day hosting, but if this thread stays active there will be updates. About the song: I started it tonight. I've done very little mixing, and yes, the percussion sucks ass (it's there basically as a test). This is the song that plays in Zelda Majora's Mask as the world is about to be destroyed. I didn't enjoy this game nearly as much as I enjoyed OoT, but the music in this game was actually quite good. There ARE other sounds besides multiplied saw waveforms, but you have to listen for them. I normally hate using them, but fell back on them because I know they work. If I can get a decent arrangement going I can switch to other sounds (if they improve on what I have going on). I haven't been active in the community lately, so I have no idea what's hot right now. Maybe someone can help me.
  18. It seems pretty clear to me. He wants staff notation so a group of musicians can play it. Do you guys actually plan on putting a recording together of this song to submit to this site? Also, you might want to specify what song(s) you'll be playing. FFT has a lot of music. As to myself, I've done some arranging in Sibelius I can export to bmp's or whatever. I've written a piano quintet and other music for strings, but would like to try writing for brass. I'm not sure how much free time I'd have to do this sort of project though. I think if you can get a decent recording maybe we can submit it here to this site.
  19. To address a few things here: This was made in FL Studio 7, not Cubase or Reason. As Rich pointed out, yes, these are East West Symphonic Orchestra Gold samples; the organ is Symphonic Orchestra Silver. The reverb is built into the samples. It is not an FL effect. However, I believe I can control the amount of reverb with Kontact player. This isn't really a serious project. I was pretty much seeing what I could do with some newly acquired samples. I'm quite happy with how this turned out. However, I'll probably be producing some other music in this similar style. edit: yes, I could probably do with a "less crappy" banner. However, another OC Remix user (I think it was Eon Blue, or whatever his name is) already made me one that I'll probably adapt to my home page. Actually, when I have the free time I'll probably design a new page altogether (I borrowed the design from my friend who is hosting the site).
  20. This has probably been done before, but I've attempted an orchestral arrangement of the SMB1 castle theme, pretty much out of boredom. Any feedback or suggestions, whether this is worth continuing, etc. are welcome. I'm quite out of touch with OC Remix standards since the last song I submitted about 5 years ago. For now, here is a temporary link to the file. It will expire in 7 days, on Thursday, August 16. I may post a permanent link depending on responses to this thread. http://download.yousendit.com/379B56B63B1BE47E (I only just started this song tonight, so be as brutal as you want to be) This is a sample of what may be to come of some long-awaited projects I've been planning to do, possibly involving electric guitars and singing choirs (Symphonic Choirs + Wordbuilder utility). I may possibly do some more electronic/trance/techno/etc. work for this site also. games that are on my to-do list to remix: Final Fantasy 4 Final Fantasy 5 Tales of Phantasia (again) possibly more Dragon Warrior series possily FF2J and FF3J possibly the game Darklands for PC possibly Tetris (either Tengen or Nintendo version) likely more games from the Megaman series I am also open to requests, although please keep in mind I'm mostly an "old skool" gamer, mostly Nintendo based consoles through N64, as well as a few PC games. How likely I am to finish a request depends on my free time and my level of interest in the subject material. I know I was never that big on this site, but hopefully some people remember me, or at least will check out this kewlicious song and let me know what they think. Regards ~Ghetto Lee Lewis "teh GLL"
  21. I've been engaged now for nearly four years. We FINALLY set a date for December 2008. I've been trying to get my fiancee to sing on an OC Remix; she's still pretty mic shy, although she has a beautiful voice when we sing karaoke at her house.
  22. Warning: spoilers (given the thread title it shouldn't matter anyway) I finished reading it two days ago. I thought some of the storyline to be rather clever, but I thought the ending was rather anti-climactic. Walking around in a circle for 5 minutes with only 5 seconds worth of actually battling with the greatest dark wizard was pathetically disappointing. I expected so much more (although the part with Harry unvolutarily faking his death was rather interesting). I was a bit surprised (although not completely) that Snape wasn't really so evil. I still thought he was a complete jackass even though he was on the side of the good guys afterall. The actual romance between Ron and Hermione was so brief was so short I'm not completely sure it was necessary. The exact same amount of romance took place between Harry and Ginny (if you can call sloppy French kisses at random "romantic"). I thought it pretty stupid that they go from a single hot scene in the book for each couple to 19 years later with everyone being married with children; absolutely no transition; it seemed completely unneccisary and rushed. This is a long novel, not a movie. I was even disappointed by the length of the novel. It seems to rush things rather quickly near the end, as if Rowling just wanted to get the book over with. Her style is very different from that of Tolkein, who takes nearly half of a book just for things to resolve themselves. There were many questions left unanswered in Harry Potter 7. It was even one of the shorter books of the series, with less than 700 pages. Most of the book seemed wasted on Harry camping out with friends. They could have at least been studying new kinds of magic to battle the dark arts, rather than bickering with each other in the tent. Of course, some of the scenes were rather interesting and unexpected, like when they broke into the bank and escaped on a blind rampaging dragon. It seemed rather odd that at the battle of hogwarts, very few professors died apart from Lupin, when they should have been the core of people fighting the battle. On the other hand, Harry loses more of his close friends. Tragically, the boy Teddy is orphaned, much like Harry, but the book discloses very little about him during the epilogue. Overall it was an enjoyable read, but still a disappointment in many ways.
  23. Try Stormdrum or Drumkit from Hell. Reaktor has quite a few drum machines (electronic drums) that sound very raw, analog, vintage, high quality. I would NOT recommend Reason's samples because they are overly processed, unless one has no idea at all how to mix, master, and produce a song and wants the easy way out. The drum samples that come with Fruity Loops are NOT as bad as people say if you know how to process them properly.
  24. I don't play at arcades anymore. It's usually so loud or the machine not loud enough (especially not enough bass) I can't keep rhythm to the song. I get AAA's on my redoctane pad at home and can't even get AA on supernova. ITG just pisses me off. I failed a song because I hit too many of the stupid mines. All they do is make you jump off the pad to throw you off balance and it ruins the fun. As for playing with mods, I only use them to make the game harder, never as a crutch (used to playing Bag on Oni mode).
  25. I've remixed Auld Lang Syne (AGAIN). Here is teh happy techno yumminess! HAPPY 2007!!!111111ONEONEONE YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!11111 (The file still needs a bit of mastering and some other touches, so it's not really finished. Please don't distribute outside of this thread). Here is the Happy New Year remix from December 31, 2002
