  1. Wheeeeeeeee! The recital went really well! I'll put pictures up tomorrow, and hopefully recordings as well (depends on how soon my roommate can get those to me). There will be a video eventually, but it may take a couple days to edit and format. zircon, Upthorn, Jiggles McPuff, and Ferret all came, so we had a fun time watching Star Trek after the dinner party, haha. XD Thanks for all your support, everyone!
  2. Well, it's been a crazy day. Baltimore was raped by the weather, so school was canceled... which normally would be an awesome thing, but it gave rise to a couple complications. There was supposed to be a Wind Ensemble concert at Peabody tonight, but it has now been postponed to tomorrow night. This means a) DrumUltimA probably won't be able to come to more than a couple songs in my recital, and my clarinetist for Shepherd on the Rock had a direct conflict. Good news is that she found a sub for the concert, so I'll still have her all to myself until 8:00. I just wish Daggu didn't have to miss it, and the dinner party afterwards. Ah well. SEE YOU THERE!
  3. Aw, no green tentacle? Oh well, there will be other times.
  4. Thanks. ^-^ Don't worry, I'm sure we'll have another Baltimore meetup in the spring. This is sort of a mini-meet.
  5. Okay, everybody! I'm designating Peabody's main entrance as the official meeting spot for 6:00 this Thursday. There are a lot of doors to get into the building, but this is the only one that doesn't require swipe card access, so it seems like the best choice. (Plus, the steps leading up to the two big doors make it more recognizable!) Here's a map to orient yourselves with: If you can't find street parking, Peabody has a garage on the other side of the building, located on Saint Paul St. zircon (and probably DrumUltimA) will be inside at the main entrance to meet you! If you don't have their cell phone numbers, I would definitely suggest PM'ing them now. I say this because I won't be available to answer my phone or see you guys until after the performance. ^_~
  6. Nice track! Due date is the day before my 21st birthday and it's gonna be a busy few weeks, but I think I'll be able to put something together. Count me in! EDIT: By the way, your first post still says "Round 1"... hehehehehehe.
  7. I'm a soubrette with coloratura tendencies. Used to sing mezzo back in high school, so perhaps that's where José got the impression, but my range has moved up a lot since then. Nice that your mom used to sing opera!
  8. Leon: Hope you can come! Xerol: Noooooo! Mephisto: Yes, I'll definitely post some recordings and pictures... So it'll be like you were there. ^_~ Thanks for your well wishes, everybody!
  9. Neat stuff! I dig the ethnic feel, although the flute sample has some very strange, hyper vibrato. It kind of sound like it's bubbling underwater... Is it glitching, or did you do that intentionally? Production sounds pretty good for the most part, although I wish you had a stronger sense of unity of place. It sounds like the instruments are in a different room from the chanting people- probably a reverb issue. May I suggest some crackling fire sound effects for the intro? This is definitely enough arrangement for the amount you've given us so far, but I'm hesitant to pass the mix because it feels underdevloped. 1:53? C'mon, I'm sure you've got more in you! There are places that sound a little empty right now, so I think some expansion (especially since the percussion picked up towards the end!) is in order. Please resubmit! NO RESUBMIT!
  10. This is so, so, sooooo close to passing for me. I'm going to make a suggestion that I think could really make a world of difference: Ask a pianist in the community to collab with you. Dhsu, bladiator, Reuben Kee... All would make excellent choices. It just needs that extra push, you know? The arrangement is there, but everything is sequenced so rigidly as it stands. It's the same kind of problem as you've been having with Let it Rain, except this one feels much closer to the bar. I also want to point out that although you've made some nice personal touches here, everything still feels a little repetitive for such a short piece. I'm not quite as impressed as Larry and Vig, apparently. Just a few basic things to work on... NO RESUBMIT!
  11. ...Yeah, what Larry said. Sorry, but I can't find any connections other than the direct samples and FX. You should take a look at our standards for what constitutes an "OC ReMix" (as opposed to any old remix) if you want your music to be featured on this website. We value reinterpretation very highly. NO
  12. As Larry pointed out, it's those subtle details that can really make or break a mix. This is a lovely piece, from start to finish. A few minor twangs in the accoustic guitar, but that helps maintain the organic feel. 0:58 marks the entrance of your soft percussion; there are some nice rhythmic choices there, but I wish the bass kick had been a little louder and more supported... It was barely audible! I also felt like the beautiful sinewav that enters at 2:45 could have appeared much sooner. Why save it for the last minute, right before a fade? I wanted mooooore. Relaxing, heartfelt, and unique. This gets a YES in my book! EDIT: Would you be willing to pump up that bass kick a little before this gets posted, if it's passed? That would make my day. ^-^
  13. Very Radiohead. I love, love, LOVE this arrangement. Actually, the vocals remind of the lead singer from Milton Nascimento, too. I can't tell how much the singing has improved since your last submission because the link has been removed, but there isn't a lot here that really bothers me. I'll point out a few things just for good measure, though: - 0:26 bass part has some major note scooping, and not in a good way. - 0:40 scooping in the high tenor makes your entrance late compared to the other parts. - 0:53-0:58 same high tenor part seems off rhythm with everything else. If you're going for intentional syncopation, it needs more intent and accuracy. - 1:08-1:18 bass part is slightly out of tune in spots. - 1:49-2:00 second highest tenor part sounds strained and slightly flat. The minimalistic backing texture rocks my socks. As soon as that entered, the vocals really fit into place. I dig your voice! May not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly works for the style. It takes guts to submit a heavily a capella remix, and I applaud you for that... If this for some reason does not pass, I'd suggest you hook up with someone a little more trained. (The problem is... too much training would detract from the style. So hopefully it won't come to that!) YES
  14. Awwwwww, thanks! (Wait, are you trying to butter up zircon and I? ) You've got a lot of great ideas rattling around in that brain of yours, Xenon. I like where this arrangement is headed, with the laid back groove and varied instrumentation. That being said, you've got your work cut out for you in the realm of production. Problems: - The string sample that intros the mix is already awkwardly sequenced. It sounds choppy because each articulation is identical. Always strive to smooth things over... unless you're intentionally going for a jerky sound, in which case reverse strings could do the trick. - Both the drum and clarinet samples are cheesy to the max! I'm sure you can find better than that. - Your sax playing isn't completely out of tune– just the 5th note of each sequence, which is consistently sharp. (If this were Lover Reef, I'd be referring to the words "There's a cold wind through this sea of sand/ And the sun's gone down on our parting hands" etc.) - Tooooo muuuuuch reeeveeeerrrrb! - At 2:07, some very fakey accoustic guitar enters the mix. Boooooo... Really, you can find better, or at least vary up the articulation. - The piano, particularly at the very end, is mixed too loud with respect to the other instruments. Really tune your ears for that sort of thing, and I'm sure you'll be able to achieve a better balance. I hope you don't throw this away.... just gonna take some patience and good old fashioned elbow grease to get it up to par. ^_~ NO
  15. I feel like this mix could have had used some better production. Everything sounds a little left-heavy because there is often less going on the right side, and the guitar panning is very wide. The arrangement is decent, but I feel like the guitar playing lacks a certain energy, despite the impressive shredding. Maybe it's really the drums that are killing the mood? Already been said, but you could have definitely found some better free samples there. I don't know... I'm with Larry; the tone of the guitars is too subdued, and the panning sounds rather awkward on headphones. You're off to a great start, but I feel like this needs more power to pass. Keep at it! NO RESUBMIT
  16. Ya, as Andy said, Penn station is the closest. It's really easy- just a 20 minute walk to Peabody, straight south on a one-way north street. Dave said he'd like to try to make it as well, though, so if you plan in advance maybe you two could hitch a ride. I'd love to finally meet Paige! (And it'd be great to see you again, of course!)
  17. Hiya Jill I've been working on "Take Me Away" and fixed up the vocals and some other things, and I think I'm ready to resubmit it. I was looking at the original Judge Decisions and you typed huge text to get me to resubmit, so I'm sending you the pm Here's a link to the new file: And a link to the old file if someone wants to compare: And here's a link to the original decisions: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4708 Also an extra comment to one of Larry's statements. He commented on some of the harmonizations being noticeably off in some places (mainly the end), but that was an element I chose to go for to kinda give the feeling that the lyrics were a recurring thought. Nevertheless, I minimized them and only left a few in there. Thanks for your time -Mike
  18. You guys won't see me until I'm up on stage, unfortunately, because I'll be busy warming up with my accompanists. BUT, there is a cafeteria at Peabody (and vending machines), so I'm sure you could grab something before 6:45. The *real* food will happen afterwards when we go out. :>
  19. Wingless, baby... honey... sweetcakes... Even if you *looked* like zircon, I think I would notice a dramatic change in behavior. ^_~
  20. You are cordially invited to pixietricks' junior recital! When: Thursday, February 15th at 7:00 pm Where: Griswold Hall Peabody Conservatory of Music (1 Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore) How much? FREE! The program: Gustav Holst's Op. 35 "Four Songs for Voice and Violin," from A Medieval Anthology "Cinq Mélodies Populaires Greques," by Maurice Ravel Benjamin Britten's bizarro set "On this Island" "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" (a.k.a. "Shepherd on the Rock") by Franz Schubert! I will be accompanied by Daniel Butman (violin and piano), and Catherine Wong (clarinet). It's going to be a fun night, and I'd love to see some familiar faces there! The recital itself will be only an hour long, so we can all go out for a big dinner party afterwards, if that suits your fancy. And let's see... Important stuff to know: - Peabody does have a parking garage, which can be located at 606 Saint Paul St. It's inexpensive, so you can always fall back on that if there's no street parking available. - Griswold Hall is located on the second floor of the conservatory building. - Doors will open at 6:45. - There will be plenty of students in the audience, so it's not expected that you get all dressed up. Just don't come in ripped up jeans. ^_~ The meetup will start at 6:00, to allow for parking and finding your way around. Try to be on time, so we don't have any last-minute stragglers who don't know where to go once they're inside! Official meeting spot is Peabody's main entrance, and zircon (and probably DrumUltimA) will be inside there to meet you! If you don't have their cell phone numbers, I would definitely suggest PM'ing them now. Here's a map to orient yourselves with: Attendees: pixietricks zircon DrumUltimA Ferret Upthorn Jiggles McPuff (Liontamer) (Paige) (djpretzel) (José the Bronx Rican) (bustatunez) (Xerol)
