Attention remixers: GarageGames hoax
Jillian Aversa replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in General Discussion
Haha, yup. Saving that money all for meself. -
It has come to our attention that recently, several remixers in the OCR community were contacted by a supposed talent scout representing the company GarageGames. He or she went by the name "Deborah Johnson," using the email address "skillspotter@gmail.com." We found the emails rather peculiar, and thus contacted the company to validate the scout's identity and intent, but they insisted that no one under that name works for them, or ever has in the past. Long story short: if you are one of those remixers who has been contacted, please know that it is a hoax and cease your communications!

Fearless Kirby project leader... You have been pink, and soft, and squishy. And also a darn good judge and moderator. I'll definitely miss you, and I hope to still hang out in person at meetups and stuff!

Jillian Aversa replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Announcements
Okay, here come my pictures! Sorry, but I'm going to have to octuple post or something like that, because I have a lot. ^_~ Group shot in the lobby! Josém Jiggles, pixietricks (in a bathingsuit...), zircon, Shael, Liontamer, Moguta, DJP, Mustin, and Ailsean. zircon and Snappleman make suave faces. Everybody about to butt rape Prophet of Mephisto. Larry knows how to dance. Yep... Virt and DJP shake hands! A monumental moment in VGM history. Everybody claps as they look on. A MAGFest Christmas, starring José and Mephisto. Devon Riley and Mustin sing backup for Shael's concert. It was awesome. Rama with the ThaSauce panel. Virt and DJP getting drinks together! Mogrothir, Moguta, D-Lux, DjSammyG, and Mog's girlfriend. Rama's DS, now worth trillions because it was signed by the Triforce. D-Lux and Mephisto getting along a little too well. ^_~ teknoboy, Tristor Trucido, fivre, and Benzo. fivre, pixietricks, zircon, Rama, and Xerol. Human pyramid in the pool, featuring DjSammyG, Geoffrey Taucer, Mephisto, zircon, and pixietricks. ZOMG, wii spelt OCR in da pool. Moguta's flying spaghetti monster thingy. Shael, Rama, Snappleman, zircon, and pixietricks. Darangen's an LED alien. Everybody gathered round to watch DJP delete unmod. This picture speaks for itself. (EDIT: Removed. Sorry, guys! It was all in good fun.) Bahamut and Mephisto look on in excitement. "Are you sure you want to delete the forum called 'UnModerated'?" Yup! Free hugs! Taucer, D-Lux, zircon, fivre, and q-pa spread the love. Wave Theory concert, featuring in-game footage. (Yay for Sonic!) Taucer passed out next to his late-night McDonald's snack. José is a greek god. Our last meal together! ;_; Garian, Darangen, Mephisto, zircon, Bahamut, q-pa, Moguta, D-Lux, Josh, RealFolkBlues, teknoboy, Xerol, Benzo, DjSammyG, fivre, and Taucer. Milking our last moments together. Everyone hugs goodbye. ;_; So that's everything! Mods, feel free to merge my posts (if that's possible). I must reiterate what everyone else said: this was truly a MAGFest to remember. I went last year and had an awesome time, but this year was so amazing that I'm still trying to sort through all of my memories. At last, all the remixing communities came together. It no longer felt like we had to avoid each other, or that everything was divided into cliques. I'll be perfectly honest; lately, I've been feeling like this community isn't really worth the time and effort I've been devoting to it. A lot of stuff goes on in the forums and in the various IRC chats that would never fly in real life, and this past weekend was a perfect example of that. But being amongst you guys, and seeing everyone get along across the boards is inspiring. Really, it's one of the only things that keeps me going on ocremix. So thanks for the great times! EDIT: My pics start on page 19. Just wanted to make sure you don't miss the first half! -
Yay for VGM!

Hey guys, just to let you know: I'm at MAGFest right now, so any requests for comments viewing will have to wait a few days. It'll take me a while to sort through my PM's, and right now I'm trying to hang out with everyone as much as I can before the con is over. ^-^ -

Jillian Aversa replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
If any individuals would like to see what was said about their mixes, I think I could show you the comments (anonymously) through PM. But yes, the sentences I asked for were strictly for quality control purposes. I'm not going to post the votes publicly because it could stir things up. ^_~ -

VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Jillian Aversa replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
I used my new Samson C01U USB mic (with pop filter and shock absorbing stand), and Garageband for editing! Not sure if I like how the bridge section turned out with the FX I used, but zircon's a production guru, so if we keep it in I'm sure he can spruce it up. Yay! I can't wait to work with you guys!!! This is gonna be an awesome mega collab, assuming everyone's all for it. -
The difference right now is that nobody else is currently trained in the technical process of recording/editing/hosting etc- and believe me guys, it is NOT an easy task. When thewingless and I officially stepped on board, I had already worked with Rayza on a whole slew of shows. I know it's tempting for some of you guys to say, "Hey! Need a host? Sure, I'm all for it!" but it's not as simple as that. I'd really like to find someone who is equally enthusiastic as me, and who will be able to commit the time and effort. It's been very hard switching from Rayza to Wingless to zircon, and I'm not completely optimistic that I'll find somebody as qualified as them, who understands the responsibility. I don't think it's in OCR's best interest to rush the replacement process, either. If VGDJ continues, I would like to continue with it. As zircon already pointed out, up until this afternoon I was busily planning for all the Magfest recordings and interviews. Still, it puts a lot of pressure on me if you guys start talking about who might be qualified. It could take considerable time to find someone who is, and teach them everything. I don't know if I'm ready to move on like that quite yet, so please respect this and be patient. It would not be possible for two completely new people to take up the show if they used the current format and webspace.

OCR01555 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Lamentations'
Jillian Aversa replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Mmmm... groove. We've passed sparser soundscapes before; I don't feel shortchanged in the slightest! The drums do sound a little over-compressed, but everything clicks so well here. I can't help but bob my head. Always changing, never boring... This totally belongs as the new background track for that party scene in Garden State. Know what I'm talking about? Love the little marimba break down, too. That was a nice touch. Good work, Suzu! YES -
OCR01541 - *YES* EarthBound 'Brainshock'
Jillian Aversa replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Woah, Nellie! That electric piano is mixed waaaaaay too loud. Other than that (and the somewhat awkward fade into the strings again at the very end), this is a no brainer. YES -
*NO* Super Mario World 'Castle of Unbelieve'
Jillian Aversa replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Goin' on a J-date! Okay, so here's what I have to say: essentially, I feel as though what you have submitted here is a conglomerate of some very productive brainstorming sessions. I mean that in the most encouraging way, because by the end when you reached the hip hop chunk, I think you found a style that could really work well for this source... especially considering your skill set. To be honest, I wasn't feeling the first 2 min 45 sec. As Larry already pointed out, the arrangement was very conservative; you started to find an interesting soundscape, but changing the instrumentation alone isn't enough. I also agree that the claps did not really fit in the mix until you got to the final section starting at 2:49. Everything before that demonstrated some nice experimentation, but didn't cement as a whole. There were hardly any transitions from idea to idea! Production was also somewhat lacking until the hip hop section. Brass samples are a b*tch, and unfortunately the ones you tried to work in sounded noticeably thin and dry. The bass drum (and really a lot of the instruments) could use much more reverb to get a more live sound. Personally, I think you should focus on the hip hop style as grounds for a resubmission, and maybe work in some orchestral elements along with it, instead of keeping them so separate. It could work really well, but only if you give yourself a chance to further explore the arrangement possibilities. I hope to hear more! NO, RESUBMIT -
OC ReMix officially attends MAGFest 5 festival
Jillian Aversa replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Announcements
The OCR panel is at 4:00 pm on Friday, and there will be an official meetup in the lounge after that, so 5:00. If you miss that, too, just look for someone in an OCR shirt! It's pretty tight-knit, even though it's technically a "convention" of sorts. As Taucer said, we can just introduce each other to other OCR folk. -

An OCR new year - Resolutions? (Happy New Years!)
Jillian Aversa replied to Pi_R_Squared's topic in General Discussion
My resolutions: I will judge at least 5 mixes per week. No exceptions! To work on my patience skills, if I feel myself getting very bothered over something, I will take a 15 minute break and distract myself with TV/cookies/other harmless activity. My new online curfew will be 1:00 am on school nights. I will have my first official demo done by the end of January. I will distribute this demo to at least 10 professionals by the end of 2007. -
VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Jillian Aversa replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
I know, some of the entries are really neck and neck right now. So exciting! -
All the new ones are there. In your user profile control panel, there's an "edit avatar" link. You currently have to sort through many pages for each category (anime, video games, tv/movies, other), but there are TONS more available. Just for reassurance: The tiny text thing will be fixed. The links will be orange again. Thread rating will probably be disabled. Icons/smilies will probably return to normal. Just gotta wait a bit.
