  1. (I tend to more or less instantly ignore any arguments made using Wikipedia articles but that's just me)

I am trying to fathom AngelCityOutlaw's analogy but I just can't.

I'll try sprucing it up a bit:

"If video-game companies are making me pay for content that's all-ready on my disc, that is like me paying a car dealership to activate the break pedal on a vehicle that I had purchased from them."

It depends exactly which content you're talking about as to whether that analogy is accurate.

If the game you're playing is a racing game and DLC is the ability to use brakes, than yeah, point valid.

It's more of a case-by-case basis. Some DLC, like the character skins, could be aking to being charged normal for a car that has different paint underneath but in order to get to that paint, you have to pay extra.

  2. So check it out. These have been going on for a while intermittently but now they have a set schedule so there's no reason to not plan on trying one out at some point.

Doubles' Dash is a themed compo held the last Friday of every month, starting at 9 PM EST. Teams of two write, record and upload to ThaSauce a vocal song in under three hours and twenty minutes. Teammates are not to be chosen until 15 minutes prior to the start of the compo, thereby providing an X-factor. Typically, one team member handles the instrumental and production, while the other handles lyrics and vocals, but that's not a rule; division of labor can be handled in any way a team sees fit, though it is not in the spirit of the event for one team member to do everything while the other sits idle.

There have been some amazing songs to come out of DDC, so if you're working on leveling up your online collaboration skill, or your vocal or production chops, this is a great way to do so. While there may be a winner by points, everyone who participates is a winner because they make some material and improve their skill!

  3. I can't imagine the size of the files for these extra costumes is so high that, on a relatively high speed connection (you know, the kind that are required at minimum to play on these online services), you can't download one in about 5-10 seconds if you're playing an online match with someone who has it and you don't. I think since Unreal Tournament 99, games have been allowing client-side mod downloads on the fly for compatibility. Having it on the disc should clearly and ultimately define the content as NOT DLC. It isn't downloadable content if you already have it on the disc.

People are making so many suppositions and excuses for why Capcom may have had it on the disc before the game went gold but decided to lock it and charge for a key. Even taking their reasoning for game compatibility at face value shows that they did have it done before the game went to print, and that for whatever reason it was locked on some versions with the only way to use it being a downloadable key file.

Granted, people who don't care about costumes or whatever won't buy them for $5 because they don't want to. It's a very slippery slope downhill though, and we're already seeing some DLC being game breaking, on-disc or not.

Look at the Dragon Age 2 DLC, specifically the item packs. These are items that change the balance of the game. Whether or not it is core content, that's like paying to have a leg-up in the game. Sooner or later this kind of content will translate into things relevant for online games, and invariably some of it will already be on the disc if these trends keep up.

So I see charging for costumes a slippery slope to charging for characters and worse, but the fact that its already On-Disc should both necessitate a change in what it is called, and also be a very clear point that, depending on your perspective, you might not be getting what you pay for when you purchase a game off the shelves these days.

  4. There's a lot of changes going on on the backend of OCR right now. Lots of things changing simultaneously, so all parts need to be completed before moving forward. The new torrent is definitely one of those pieces, and I have not let staff forget that we need to work on it at every staff meeting (my job is to be the executive badgerer and nagger for getting things done).

So while no real ETA, it will be sometime this year, most likely sometime over the next 2-3 months. Don't quote me on that as its just an estimate, but its a nice ballpark.

We hate keeping people waiting, but this has been a huge overhaul for the next set of torrents, so it is worth the wait.

  5. Oh my god, stop spamming this place with your helpful servers for games everyone here plays.

    Attention whore.

Shut yer trap lest I continue ignoring my responsibility to get you a WIP for the GB25 project.

Hey I might have to join in sometime on the Terraria game some time, when do you guys usually get on?

Well, we used to play a good bit, but the server went down for a while. It only just got restarted this morning, so I would assume you'll likely catch people starting to play it soon. Most folks play at night, I'd check back at 9PMish. There are some night owls who normally only play after midnight, but we'll see who actually wants to get on the server. Remember, its password protected so PM me if you want in.

  6. I've put a few other older/other game servers on my minecraft box. I'll list the currently supported games here so that peoples can know what's available:

If you have any other game recommendations, let me know.

Edit: might formalize some method of donations for generous souls to help cover the electricity bill of running the gamebox. That or also donate and have me run a server for a specific game for a certain amount of time. Or admin priviliges. Iunno, I just know that my electricity bill is really high right now.

  7. The ire that people are drawing from the SF X T current event is that characters are on every version of the game, but only come unlocked on a specific version. This also boils down to the idea that console-exclusive content still sells systems, which is so unbelievably flawed these days that I don't even know where to begin dismantling it.

  8. On-Disc DLC is the closest thing our industry has come to an oxymoron.

    DLC = DownLoadable Content.

    On-Disc = not downloadable

If you put something on the disc and the only thing you're downloading is an unlock code for said content, that's not downloadable content.

The idea behind DLC goes back to the days of Patches and Mods from PC Gaming. Until the widespread availability of broadband AND large enough rewritable content storage built into them, modern consoles had no way to really update a game after relase to either add things or make fixes. Normally, a different hardcopy of the game would be released if it was fully warranted. PC Games, by way of being the pioneering format for the internet, have had the ability to be patched, upgraded, and modded since the early 90's. You could simply release some files and only have to pay for the bandwidth that people use to download them and BAM instant upgrades.

Due to how locked down consoles are with security countermeasures, and the amount of control exercised by the console's respective online marketplaces, its not nearly as easy to release content or patches but at least now the services are on par with what is available for PC. However, publishers have found people so overly willing to pay to keep their games usable and relevant for longer (considering the vastly increased prices of game creation and marketing these days) by releasing DLC for it.

Some DLC is very good. Some DLC is very bad. The point is that DLC is normally content that is not available on the disc at time of release that you have to pay for or download to get.

Why On-Disc DLC is considered disgusting by many is that it is an extremely shameless nickel-and-diming scheme to get you to pay more money to get everything on the disc that you bought available to you. Pardon the phrase, but back in my day, we either had to PLAY to unlock stuff or had to enter cheat codes.

So, anything on the disc that's locked that requires me to pay extra money to unclock it is technically NOT DLC. It's ODLC: On-Disc Locked Content. Examples of this would be me buying a fighting game and then charging me money to unlock all the characters. If the characters weren't on the disc in the first place, then I would pay money for them. But when I buy a game, I think I'm buying everything on there open to me should I try hard enough to get it. When I pay for DLC, I'm choosing to pay for extra development time that was spent that couldn't or wasn't put into the initial release.

People like me get upset because this is technically ripping people off. I don't even see it as being convenient to anyone but the publisher. The developers had to work hard to get the content done regardless, and if it is on-disc they had to work hard before the game was released. And to get On-Disc DLC, you still need to go online on your system and buy it. No excuse there.

"Here you go, sir. Your cheeseburger with fries and a drink for $12.99. Oh, by the way, the drink comes with the combo, and it's on your table, but you have to pay me an extra five dollars on top of the $12.99 in order to drink it. It's On-Table DLC."

  9. So Brunzo was our (l)on(e)ly entry last month, but he allowed Tarrasque to write the theme this month, and this time it's Mash-Ups! Any two sources, and create either the most awesome thing since awesome, or the demon spawn of a musician's nightmare! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

And Tarrasque didn't give a bonus, so unless he does, there isn't one! No extra points this time!

OH NO, no extra bonus points?! HOW WILL I ENSURE VICTORY NOW?

We'll see you there! Who else is going?!

  11. This^ is why you need to wait to update

Its fine. David can ban the people who are doing the sacking, and we made a backup copy of the server before we updated to 1.2. Worst-case is we either revert back to what it was before Saturday, or temporarily reinstate the old version for people to get stuff back, then switch back to the new version with bans in-place.

Or we could go temporary whitelisting UNTIL bukkit is updated. I leave that up to you folks/Brushfire to decide how its done.

Also wanted to put out there that I'm considering running servers for other games on the minecraft box, resources depending. The current box does suck up a bit more juice to leave up 24 hours a day. We might start taking some small donations just to offset the cost of electricity. (A 500-watt computer running 24 hours a day costs $33.60 maximum a month)

  12. The new standards were totally made in support of prog rock, right? Have you posted about it on TheShizz yet, Larry? Are you guys excited about receiving your first 30 minute prog rock piece or are you dreading that day? There's probably a fair deal of people who could make something like this:
and sub it to OCR. >:]

Also just to add, maybe I am the only idiot who didn't care that much about his FILE quality, I always just bounced out a 192kbps mp3. I don't even know what VBR1 is...

    2. We strongly recommend submissions between 2 and 7 minutes in length.

    • Anything longer and evaluation may be delayed.

Considering the time it takes to judge a normal track to be acceptable based on source usage and arrangement, the amount of time it would take to do something longer than 7 minutes would likely exponentially increase time to judge.

The whole idea is that the site is less restricted by cost of data hosting and transfer now, which opens up the quality and length standards to what we now have it set to. If you're going to submit a song that's as long as a Simpson's episode, you should be prepared to wait, possibly.

  13. So I've been watching an LP of this lately because I got 90% through the game and gave up, and it's just as painful to watch as it was to play.

It occurs to me that I never really commented on the game after it came out. I feel like my money was not well spent UNLESS it went 100% to Gearbox. Gearbox released the game 3d Realms butchered, and thus now has the rights to future Duke Nukem projects. If my money went to Gearbox and helps them make a good Duke Nukem game, I won't feel nearly as bad as I do right now.

This game ended up playing like a walkthrough of the worst mis-steps of FPS history; a by-the-points demonstration of what not to make in a game.
