  1. Would love suggestions for tunes I can sneak in at my wedding reception this weekend.

    Think mild, soft, background music. Acoustic covers are a safe best. Small orchestration is ok. Big orchestrated sounds won't fly. Percussion-less jazz remixes might be ok.

    Suggest away!

    PS: Kirby's Dream Land 'Gliding on a Silver Lining,' by Level 99 is a perfect example!

    Can I just say that I'm kinda teary-eyed from that kind of lofty praise? Have a GREAT wedding this weekend with nerdy music that will touch the hearts of everyone present. Mazel Tov! Salud! Le Chaim!

    Edit: Another very warm acoustic mix of mine that fits in with what you're looking for is Quickening, from Xenogears: http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02085/

  2. release in two weeks! who hasn't preordered yet and wants to do a group buy?

    Oh no. Oh nonononono. This is bad. This is very bad.

    Borderlands 2: Released September 18th

    Torchlight 2: Release September 20th

    What little time I had in my life will no longer exist. Nor will sleeping. Nor eating.

    Bathroom trips may be deprecated by a plastic bag and a window access to the trash can.

  3. Wow. Just....wow.

    If anyone needs a crash course in how to not do a proper new version of a game, porting it to the same system it is essentially being ported from, please play this.

    Remember that FF7 tech demo for the PS3? Skweenicks has had the most successful 6 year long troll of all time.

    I don't know whether to ignore this entirely, or request the company mercifully put down the ff7 name and never look at it again.

  4. That wasn't tone of voice sarcasm, you were supposed to pick it up by seeing what I quoted. Sorry it didn't work out so well.

    Nobody can hear your tone of voice in a forum post. Nobody except yourself.

    OK I've been thinking about it and I have a very real suggestion that I'd like to think at the very least could inspire a spin-off idea that works. Here goes.

    What if OCR had a "submission season". Basically just have a set period of time during the year in which OCR accepts submissions. I personally think that the site could reduce that period to a single month out of the year but if that sounds way too drastic then how about OCR accepts submissions from January through June. Then the remaining 6 months is just posting.

    Advantages of this system:

    +The flood of remixes won't seem to be endless

    +People would enthusiastically prepare that ONE remix they plan to submit that year.

    +People can participate in the many remix projects on the site while not working on stand-alone remixes.

    Disadvantages of this system:

    -The number of remixes submitted might diminish (I think it's a good thing)

    -Some people might feel inconvenienced (screw 'em :D)

    -Rejectees may be frustrated because they have to wait a year to resubmit.

    Final Sales Pitch:

    I think it would be a great system. I think that OCR is popular enough now that if you only accepted remixes during the month of January, you'd receive enough to keep you busy throughout the year. If the queue ever runs out, then you can increase the submission time frame.

    What do you think of this strategy? Are there tons of fatal flaws?

    This wouldn't really limit the amount of submissions we get: it would either coral them into a much heavier submission period, or discourage people from remixing often, or both. People would also still try to submit offseason as well, and it doesn't lessen the amount of work that is done on the backend. Mixes would still need to be spread out. And that would definitively limit the amount that a person COULD submit in a given year, which is not our primary goal (once every 3 weeks is plenty submission time, but halve that and its getting way too restrictive).

    By trying to restrict people to doing one mix a year, seemingly leveling the playing field, you're only frustrating people and driving more people away. Some people make more music than others, and all individuals are treated as equal as possible in the posting process. It also discourages people from saving up to one mix per year because of the amount of submissions that are still rejected. Would you want to only have a very small amount of shots to make it and then have to wait 6-11 months before trying again? I don't think any mixer, veteran or novice, would be happy with that kind of scenario. And neither would we.

    Keep thinking, though! Never stop coming up with ideas to make the site better.

  5. Clarifications:

    1) In the past, on ReMix albums, there has been some leniency as to the source material allowed. Super Dodge Ball included a number of public domain folk songs that, while not infringing on any particular copyrights, are not eligible for regular ReMixing since the only folk song allowed to be arranged is Tetris A. The difference here, however, is that TMNT theme is a LICENSED song originally created for a TV show and not for the games. BTMNTBAMLOL, as an example, used a small cameo of the song itself but was not strictly a ReMix OF the title theme in-total. A cameo should be fine, but ReMixing the TMNT TV show theme by itself, and in full length, would not be allowed as a ReMix or on a ReMix album.

    This is stated very clearly in the submission guidelines for regular ReMixes, which up until now has been de facto reference for what is allowable under ReMix albums for viable source material.

    2) As far as approval goes, there's basically two individual things that apply:

    a) Preliminary approval while the project is in-progress.

    B) Final approval of an album package for posting

    The first is when we receive an album submission letter from a person, stating the overview of the album and giving some samples of the in-progress quality. If that meets the expectations of the reviewing team, the album is given tentative official status, and gets moved to the Projects subforum. This can be lost during the process if the album stagnates or starts to veer offcourse in scope, quality, or material. Being an official project in-progress does not guarantee an immediate passing to post, but its a very good start and it allows OCR staff to much more closely monitor, track, and assist if needed.

    The second is after ANY album, in-progress official or not, gets submitted to the site. This document is a guideline for this specifically, as we will not evaluate an album that is missing any part of its final package. Consider this the last line of defense against incomplete albums. Staff has, up until now, pulled a lot of extra tasks on the backend to make an album postable. As the sophistication of albums grows more complex, more tasks are now being delegated onto the director to ensure a complete and quality album, as well as making it easy for staff to have a fast and efficient evaluation and posting process.

    More questions will be answered shortly.

    Edit: The viability of the TMNT theme specifically is being discussed at the staff meeting this week. So the answer may change in a few days.

  6. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/08/blizzard-to-extend-diablo-iii-endgame-with-100-new-character-levels/

    "With the release of the upcoming 1.0.4 patch, level 60 characters in Diablo III will start earning experience towards a new set of "Paragon levels" with each monster they kill. Besides upgrading characters stats like standard levels, each Paragon level will also increase your character's ability to find gold and magical items by three percent. That should help prevent what Blizzard calls the "demoralizing" problem of playing for hours without finding any good items, and prevent players from having to resort to tactics like "Magic Find gear swapping" just to find the best loot. Paragon levelers will also get "a distinctive increasingly impressive border" around their character portrait for every ten levels they earn."

    I know this was previously discussed but...seriously? So you have to get to top level, just to start grinding on the same character again in a DIFFERENT leveling system. I am confuzd.

  7. OCR Album Requirements for Evaluation & Release

    For any prospective album directors or project staff, please read these updated guidelines.

    In 2011, we had the largest ever amount of albums posted on OCR. Staff was pushed to its utmost limits getting albums out, and we realized a number of problems with our review and posting process through that experience. We have spent the last few months writing up new project guidelines for running and submission, which details every bit of the process that you would need to know. Furthermore, it details what the director is specifically responsible for arranging or creating in order for an album to be accepted. These include:

    * Confirmation of final masters

    * Any Artwork

    * Video Trailer (Optional)

    * Website (Optional)

    * MP3 Tagging

    * Musician consent agreements

    * Evaluation Submission Package

    If you're running, or considering running, an album you want to eventually submit to OCR, please read the guidelines thoroughly.

    If there's anything missing, any questions, or any problems that need addressing in the doc, please post them here.

  8. Happy Birthday.

    The Bortz will be with you... always.

    The Shwartz of the Bortz, of course,

    Why you singing through your nose!??!??!?!?? :pretzel:

    It's not nearly as nasal as I used to sing, and I think it fits with the song 8)

    The beard will thank everyone in a very interesting post to come :twisted:
