*NO* Seiken Densetsu 3 'The Dragon Emperor's Calling'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
I have played, since Monday, about an hour and a half of SD3 so far As per usual, you have a pretty emotive and personalized take on the source here. Admittedly, I only listened to the main source and know the Secret of Mana sources, so I didn't catch the cameos, but even as is I think the sources are easy enough to recognize. I think for the most part your arrangement and playing is fine, but I'm noticing what feels like some slight timing issues that did pull this down a little bit. I also felt like the dynamic range of the piece overall could have been expanded and explored a little more to push the emotion further. On the good side I thought a lot of the transitions, especially the first one into the Weird Counterpoint source, were well done and very thoughtful. In terms of production, I personally think the piano sound is fine, and I am curious what the other judges think. I do think it's not the best mix I've heard from you, and it might be a little close to the bar due to the small issues standing out on a solo piano track, but I'm OK with passing this as is. Good luck with the rest of the judging! YES -

The Legend of Korra (potential spoilers within)
DragonAvenger replied to KyleJCrb's topic in General Discussion
Wow, just watched the ending, and it was a pretty fantastic wrap up. As with everyone else, I found that...Korra getting her bending back so quickly felt a little cheap, when they could have made a great season two of her regaining those powers. I also was very surprised about Tarrlok's sacrifice, especially since my stream froze for a moment to buffer after it, and I thought that's how the episode ended Everything was really well done, and very emotional. -
The only reason I didn't mark this as a direct post is because it is relatively conservative in terms of expanding on the source. The personalization and emotion that's displayed here is completely fantastic, however, and it's one of the easiest YES votes I've gotten to vote on. Great job! YES, please

Wrong Zelda 'Legendary Hero' Theme, as the mixer wasn't specific on which game. ------------------------ Kind of an odd choice of themes to work with, though at times it does work well. Personally I'm not too fond of the pairing for the most part, but I'm willing to put my personal feelings aside for the times that the interplay does seem to work well. I do like the overall soundscape you've presented here, but I feel like there are a lot of sections that are just rehashes of areas before it. I don't know how verbatim everything is, but it feels very repetitive to me. Some of it definitely comes from the sounds not really changing around, and the looped drum beats that are brought in and out of the track. The 1:42 transition feels very awkward, with parts not really seeming to fit into the slowing time signature. It might be just me, but a lot of the track feels pretty quiet. I think there's more you can do with the dynamic range overall, aside from bringing everything up a notch. I'd also look at your humanization overall. Part of the piece feeling repetitious comes from everything being stiffly sequenced. A perfect example of this is 3:41 where the bass has a very unrealistic cutoff. Similarly, the bass sound feels a bit thin to me, and could use more oomph. The drums also are a bit thin, and having some fuller sounds will add more dramaticism to what's going on. I think the concept is pretty cool, despite it not really tickling my personal fancy. As-is, there's a lot of work here that needs to be done to make things more fresh and unique within the song. I definitely would like you to work out the details and send this back, as I think you have some promise as an arranger. NO (resubmit)

*NO* Sonic 3D Blast (GEN) 'Enigmatic Melody' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I think Larry made some excellent point here that really sum up what is holding this track back at this point. I think the dynamic build and the synth details are really at the heart of the matter, and adjusting those a little more will be what gets the job done for me. Hopefully you don't hate us all for sending it back again, but I think you can really make this shine, and it will really help you see those details for your future mixes as well. Remixer: HoboKa Remix: Source Tunes: Chrono Trigger: AD 2600, No Hope and Chrono Cross: Prisoners of Fate Details: Hey all at the J panel - I went for a more organic approach this time and fiddled around with some filter fx, humanization and so forth. I was inspired by the games of course, but also Donny Darko, namely the track: Mad World (by Tears for Fears and remixed by someone, can't remember who off top of my head) Anyways, I hope you guys and gals enjoy my remix... ---------------------- - 2300 - no hope - CC

I always wanted to do a cover of it, but I could never figure out how (due to my limited musical knowledge). In the end, I just improvised on my keyboard until I had something cool that I thought would work. "To Soothe a Wounded Soul" didn't turn out exactly like I wanted it to, but I still think it turned out great. I hope you enjoy! -----------

*NO* Kirby Super Star 'The Last Dance (OCR Edit)'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm a bit torn on this one. In terms of arrangement, I think you accomplish what you set out to do; I'm hearing plenty of source in here, although a lot of it is somewhat hidden. Even with the masking in spots, I think it's definitely clear what source you're using and you can pick out the parts. Production to me just isn't sounding right. A lot of it is the balance of instruments, with the bowed bass being pretty loud compared to everything, and the other instruments feeling pushed back. Having your melody leads being drowned in delay and reverb isn't helping things. I know part of it is what you are going for in terms of the story of your mix, but I think it just doesn't come across well in the song, and instead is making everything blurry. I'd start with toning down the effects, and honestly, consider approaching the 'masking' of the happier source a different way in the mix that leaves other parts more clear. Hopefully some other judges will have some further advice for you. NO (resubmit) -
This is a cute (and short!) source. I think the way things are approached is a bit straightforward, but overall has a good amount of personalization and changes to make it unique. The transition at 1:43 is pretty awkward, both from the dubstep to the claps section, and also how the tempo change is approached. I'd really like that to be reworked and cleaned up. Aside from that, I do feel the track runs a little long for the short source. If the arrangement length were left as-is, I think it would still be OK, but I wouldn't mind some trimming, either. Honestly, the production is killing it for me. The synth choices aren't really working together very well; the lead melody synth can't really hold up to the rest of the instruments in particular, and the rest of the instruments sound fairly generic. There's also a lot of reverb, making some already unclear areas muddier. The melodylines are also pretty mechanical, and adding some humanization would add more life to the track. Once the bass drops I feel like there's a huge competition of the focus of the track, which is sending very mixed signals. What it comes down to for me is that the dubstep isn't executed very well, there is a good deal of other production aspects that need to be refined, and the 1:43 section could stand to be cleaned up. I think there's definite promise here, but also a lot of work yet to go. Hit up the WIP forums to get some more feedback, and I'd like to see this again. NO (resubmit)

DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Man, that source is unfun to listen to. I'm sure it makes sense in the game, but stand-alone it's pretty bleh. I think your approach to the source and the creativity you brought to it is pretty fantastic, however. There are a lot of really neat ideas here that you've molded together with your image while still keeping the source present and accessible. The soundscape is well planned and drum sequencing really enhances what's going on. Really great approach here. YES -
*NO* Gradius 3 'Hero of the Flame'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Pretty sweet source with a lot of anxiety in it. I think you captured that aspect of the original well. To be honest, though, this overall is very similar to the original in terms of structure and melody. There are some differences, like how you simplified the melody in many parts, but I think overall it needs to be further from the source in terms of arrangement to be on par for our standards. Adding more original material of your own will be a good start, and maybe some additional harmonies or countermelodies. I'd also like to point out the ending, which is honestly pretty weak. Having the track end as-is feels like it was taken from the source and cut off before the repeat. Endings are very tough, but I'd love to hear you experiment more with having the track come to a stronger conclusion. There are some production aspects that are sticking out as well. The first thing I notice is the drums, which are feel like they are on autopilot for a lot of the track. The other big thing that sticks out is that the soundscape is pretty sparse. The first half and end area of it is drums, bass, and piano lead, with some other backing synths. The part in the adds some extra synths, which I think are a good start, although I'm not crazy about the sound choices as is. Honestly, overall, there is a lot of work to be done here. I do think you have some good ideas that you can put into use and develop further, but it is going to take some major overhaul. I'd suggest using the WIP forums to work on this and get some feedback from the users and mods there. NO -

*NO* Civilization 2 'Lost in Time'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I don't quite agree with Halc on the narrated part; I think it's decidedly cheesey, but in a cute way. The chorus suffers a bit from not being completely in time, which makes things a little muddy at times when you have consonants not lining up fully. The arrangement is fun, although I felt like the middle was a bit empty, and the ending was a bit too much of a repeat (with the chorus being almost verbatim from before). I think I'd like to hear some more change-ups there, maybe some harmony or counter melodies? Something that would add more of a build and tension to support your story. Production is still suffering from the generic synths. I think they may be what I'm most not feeling in the middle section. Some sort of layering might add some strength to what's going on. Fun concept, and a fun source. Hope you touch this up. NO (resubmit) -
You definitely worked to spread this out from the very short original. I like some of the ideas you've worked in here, and overall the style change is pretty cool. The problem I'm having with the mix and source as a whole is that it's so largely chord-based that it's difficult to call some of the connections solid in my book. It's treading the fine line between just being chords with original melody on top vs. rearranging the source, if that makes sense. That being said, I feel like a lot of the problem stems from how the source is layed out rather than your actual mixing of it. All THAT being said, I do think you clear the line here, if barely, in terms of pulling the source in and having it be present. I think it's a little repetitive, but again that's due to she source being so short that it's the nature of the beast. Production-wise, I think things are mostly solid. Things are a touch mechanical in the marchier sections, and some instruments, like the flute, are suffering from some realism issues. Most of it is minor, so it's more nitpicks than anything. Your guitar also feels like it's a little muffled, and I'd have like it to be clearer. Overall I think this does clear the bar, but barely. I can definitely see this going either way, and I might change my vote if it comes down to it to get this back to you sooner if it's not looking good, so good luck! YES (borderline)
