  1. Really very little to add to what the gentlemen above have said. The arrangement is very nice, and the originals are super nice too! This is just being pushed pretty hard, and some adjustment will get it on the right track! NO (resubmit)
  2. This is pretty sweet, and a ton of fun to listen to overall. The arrangement has a ton of energy, and I the connections are very obvious to pick out. Really loved some of the soloing you had going on; the parts really played with with the original elements you had going on. If I had a critique I would note that the some of the sequencing in the soloing isn't quite as smooth as it could be and there are some slight timing issues in the guitar. That slide up around 1:23 has a weird cutoff, as well. None of the issues really hold back the track, in my opinion. Nice work overall! YES

  4. Gonna pull the third vote hat again here. Larry really nailed this in terms of production. Definitely not really feeling the electronic synths pulling off the lead here: they aren't holding up to the other stuff that you have going on, and the track is sounding weak as a result. While I don't really remember the original version from way back, I can still quote myself that it feels like the backing elements are too up front here, and area drowning out the leads. I think this goes a bit beyond the issue mentioned above about the leads being quiet as-is, and you can bring the backing down a bit overall. Larry also mentioned the mechanical-ness of some of the instruments and I'll echo that. Change some velocities and make the parts more human, and it'll really help sell the emotion and the arrangement. Definitely pretty close to the bar as is, but you have a lot of smaller issues that are adding up here. Keep at it, please! NO (resubmit)
  5. The groove that starts this at 0:33 is pretty fantastic, and is a great concept to work with, but there are a lot of factors that are holding this back overall. The first being that the mix is entirely too repetitive. It's a cool groove, but it gets run to the ground pretty quickly without any change-ups in terms of energy, instrumentation, and volume. A new section or original writing added in would help give this more. The sounds overall aren't bad, the sequencing overall felt a bit stiff and mechanical. It's especially apparent in the flute. Some humanization would help this, by changing the velocities on attacks. There's also a good deal of reverb on this, and it could probably be brought down a tad. The last issue I have with the mix is some confusion as to who made it. Did you take a part of a medley the SGB's did and expand on it? If so, unless they've given permission, we can't consider accepting a mix on the behalf of others. As it is this isn't there yet, but it's something to bring up regardless. Some clarification is needed here. NO
  6. The first thing that sticks out to me here is that there is a lot of lower end muddiness that makes the basslines and later the strings to make out well. Overall the production is going to need some work to clean that up, as well as improve the sound qualities and make things sound a bit more humanistic. The arrangement overall is short and mostly close to the source, but the section at 1:03 shows a lot of interpretation and promise, which is why I paneled this. What you did there is a good first step into getting into the right mindset for what OCR looks for in an arrangement. If you could expand on those ideas and do more like that for the rest of the arrangement you'd be on the right track. Definitely check out some posted material and see how those artists took a source and worked with it to get some other ideas and motivation. I'd also suggest the WIP boards to get more advice on production improvements. Good luck! NO (resubmit)
  7. A very very minor example of this is in Chrono Trigger, when you're trying to revive Crono. The first area of Death Peak consists of winds that will blow you out of the area if you don't get behind a tree quick enough, and for some reason it was decidedly difficult to position yourself correctly. Somewhat frustrating compared to not having to do that for pretty much any other part of the game. Apparently that part of the game was hard to near impossible to do on an ipad.
  8. Hope it involves lots of awesome fun things! <3 you!
  9. Hello! Today I'd like to submit a remix from ThatGameCompany's "Journey" for PS3. It is a remix of the end credits theme, "I Was Born For This" composed by Austin Wintory. I've hosted it on my site: YouTube with note, as given to Mr. Wintory: The original song: Notes: I've been a fan of OCR for 10 years, and always wanted to join the ranks. I hope this qualifies, although I understand the samples I used might bend/break the rules. It is made entirely of samples from SNES games. I did all I could to stretch every last ounce of expression out of the old Square samples, and mix/master a very clean track. Please note that quite a few harmonies and bridges and such, were improvised, not to mention countless subtle changes everywhere else. I do not know if this will be apparent, but I sure hope so! Everything was pieced together by ear, so I had to take liberties and sprinkle in my own style. Thank you very much for checking this out, even if you cannot accept it. I really appreciate it. -William Kage (this is my stage name, please credit me as such if my remix is accepted - thanks!)
  10. Hi there, Here's the information you've asked for on the Submit page! Contact Information ReMixer Name: Manji Real Name: Christopher Mole Email: Website: http://www.northernoak.co.uk Userid: 16265 Submission Information Name of game: Metroid Prime Name of arrangement: Prime Directive Name of songs arranged: Menu Select Comments: Oh boy, this has taken a while. The original idea actually came from a repeat playthrough of Metroid Prime, about a month or so before the 'Samus's Lonesome Waltz' ReMix, which also adapts this song, was posted- I finished writing my take on the song, then got a sudden cold sweat when I checked the site in case somebody else had beaten me to the punch. Thankfully the ideas were different enough that I decided to soldier on with it- DJ Pretzel may remember an earnest English bloke chatting away at him about British prog rock after the OCRemix Panel at PAX Prime 2011, where I bemoaned my inability to get off my backside and actually complete this ReMix. Armed this week with more computer memory and a significant chunk of time off work, and having laid out the groundwork (the bass, drums and synth bits) previously, I decided to bite the bullet and actually record the guitar parts. The mix was put together in Ableton Live- the drums, bass and synths are all virtual instruments, the distorted guitars are recorded using my beloved EMG-loaded Epiphone Les Paul (named 'Epiphany') through a Line 6 Toneport UX8. I've done a little bit of polishing and repeated takes, but for the most part the guitars are fresh out of the oven- the goal is for quite a rough and ready metal sound (in the vein of Metroid Metal), which I think it achieves. As a last little note, I absolutely adore the Metroid Prime soundtrack, and it's a large reason behind my enduring love for the game- it was always subdued at some points, driving and terrifying at others, and it meshed perfectly with the exploratory nature of the game itself. Although I generally blacked out in abject horror whenever a Metroid latched onto my face, so I have no idea what the music during that sounded like... Thanks very much! ------------
  11. Hey dear Judges! I hope you're doing well! Contact Information Chernabogue Alexandre Mourey http://www.fflproduction.fr 20943 Submission Information Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Gangsta Man Strikes Back Mystic Cave Zone and a bit of Scrap Brain Zone from the Master System game Masato Nakamura + Izuho Takeuchi // Megadrive This remix was made for the Sonic Zone competition (thanks to SuperiorX for making it real!). I faced Sir_NutS during the first round but won by default (thanks to Diablo III). However, people loved the mix, so why not submitting it? Also, Gangsta Man is a stupid Robot Master created during a Mega Man compo (thanks to DarkeSword fr that) and I love that name. The mix has a BIG gangsta/rap/hip-hop influence, and while I don't usually listen to these genres, I had a LOT of fun making it (thanks to OCR for that!!). 12. Game: Sonic Colors (Wii) Title: Don't Be a Crepe Sources: Planet Wisp (Area), Planet Wisp (Act 3), Metal Harbor (Sonic Adventure 2) Composers: Kenichi Tokoi, Tomoya Ohtani, Fumie Kumatani, Mariko Nanba, Hideaki Kobayashi Link: Metal Harbor section 0:19 is used in a minor scale at 1:07 in the remix on the synth lead. This is very much a Planet Wisp remix otherwise. The song was a struggle because I was trying something new again in the field of electronica. Trying to make large, energetic and exciting electronica with intense, hard-hitting drums. I also sampled vocals from The Beatles song "Golden Slumbers" but I edited it and used it so sparingly that it shouldn't be an issue. (Vampire's Kiss has much more vocal usage in comparison). I wanted to sample "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" but there was no vocal only tracks available, and the part I wanted to use had guitar over it. This will be part of the Sonic chapter of a personal remix album "I'm working on", which will have about 5 songs from each game and split up into chapters. You can probably post this early since it's already public and was part of SuperiorX's Sonic Zone Remix Compo. I'm really excited about the solo album, and it should be quite large, but in the meantime I need to finish other project obligations. The title is in reference to the brackets of the SZRC, there's a Lizard bracket and a Pancake bracket. --------- - wisp
  13. MEGAROCKMAN is a project by Thaddeus Jaworsky (Vocals, keys, lyricist) and Nathan Euson (guitar, drums, mixing) We take melodies from the music of the Mega Man series of games, and turn them into songs with comedic and often ridiculous lyrics. Each song has a different musical style. link: http://soundcloud.com/megarockman The mp3 that's attached to this email is titled "Call of the Cut Man" It is influenced by Cut Man's level from the game Mega Man Please contact me if you like the song. Thanks for listening! -Thaddeus Jaworsky LYRICS: He cuts you with double edged razors Cuts you with a pair of scissors But the scissors are too small They cant cut you at all They are very dull Cant even cut loose-leaf paper Cant cut through a stick of butter Cant cut anything that's thick Cant even cut plastic Hes so pathetic Cut Man cuts grass He cant cut anything else But he can make some cash If he cuts it nice and fast He cuts grass incredibly half-assed In order to get it done fast Do you take me for a sap? Cause my lawn looks like crap Did you take a nap? Cut Man, Im not paying full price You did make my yard look nice I said "cut it nice and fast" But you just cut it fast Now Ill beat your ass Cut Man, you jerk Are you trying to cut me? Well, that just will not work Your scissors are for age three... And up ---------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZc0qrEzwiw
  14. Very cool source to look at, and your approach is a lot of fun. There are definitely some aspects of this that are holding it back right now, so I'll get right to them. The biggest thing I noticed is how little sonic variance there is throughout the piece. The lead bell synth is always the lead bell synth, the backing is all the backing, you get the idea. Some change-ups will really help add more interest and keep my ears from getting tired. Consider what other instruments you want to include in the mix, that will both work with the synths you have, and maybe sounds that can help the track evolve as well into something different. The transition at 1:35 is really awkward, there's no way around it. I'm not sure if you're dropping a beat or if something's getting lost, but it definitely needs to be reworked. The track overall has some good moments with a lot of energy, and I think you can improve on that by having the drumwork be a bit more interactive with what's going on. There are definitely some change-ups, but some appropriate fills could help add that extra bit. I think this is a solid start, and I'm defintely hearing an improvement in you, Tim. I'd use the WIP forums for this one to get some more feedback and keep improving on it! NO (resubmit)
  15. I can kinda see why not many people wanted to take the battle themes. I mean, they're good, but they aren't really that easy to work with. That being said, I think you approached the themes very well and there is a lot of good personalization here that really makes this track shine. The anxiety is palpable throughout, which keeps me interested to listen to more. The mix also feels shorter than it is, which shows that the arrangement is engaging. In I had a couple nitpicks, mostly in the percussion being a bit bland overall in terms of sequencing, and the bass drum getting a bit lost overall in the mix, but aside from that I feel like this is a solid approach. I also wasn't quite as sold on the 3:25 section, but it's overall pretty short and doesn't affect my overall opinion. Nice work, Greg. YES
  16. Wes really said most of what I was going to say. I appreciate that you take some time to revisit themes instead of only going from one to another without ever seeing them again, which is a nice plus in a medley like this. Everything is personalized well, and Claire's vocals are very well performed. Nice work, both of you, and congrats to Claire! YES
  17. Really interesting concept here, definitely takes a source that wouldn't be touched by many people. The opening is definitely solid: it brought me into the mix right away and caught my interest. I think things lose steam after that due to the incredibly long build-up. I could argue that the meat of the track doesn't start until 2:30, and by them I have a tough time not spacing out. I don't feel like there's anything exactly wrong with the build-up except that it is too long and repetitive. Trimming the fat out of the intro (and some of the later sections that are repetitive) is my suggestion to keeping the track at a length that isn't going to lose your listeners. In terms of production I think a lot of it is pretty good; you guys manage to keep the sounds clear despite a lot going on, and the balance feels good as well. My crits are mostly aimed at the opening; to me it doesn't feel in time with the snare that is coming in, and the snare itself sounds a bit flimsy (would love it to have a bit more crack!). Some of the sonic choices aren't my favorite either, but I'm leaning towards that being more personal preference. Maybe another judge can elaborate here. To me this is really coming down to the repetitiveness, and I feel like trimming down some of those sections will make the difference here. The arrangement is unique, and I wonder that some of the other judges will not be feeling it, though, so I wish you good luck. NO (resubmit)

At first, I was just experimenting my orchestration skill by turning the soundtracks in "Portal 2" into orchestra pieces, since most of the backing musics are electronic musics, and I thought it will be fun to do so, so I did. It turned up quite well for me so I decide to upload the demo version, which included only 4 tracks, to Youtube, entitled "A Portalicious PORTAL 2 Symphonic Medly" (www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RXVT_IwfnI), to harvest some suggestions and comments for my improvement. Surprisingly, many of them requested a extended version which made me more confidence on making it. So after a long 7 months of meditation and eating cakes, finally the final version had been uploaded to Youtube. Hope you guys enjoy it. -------------------- - playlist
  19. AkumajoBelmont (Robbie Sabo) http://www.facebook.com/AkumajoBelmont User ID 4660 ReMixer - AkumajoBelmont ReMix Title - Far From Home Games remixed: Cold Man from Mega Man & Bass SNES & Dr Wily Castle Stage 1 Mega Man 2 NES. Heyah. This was the first track I created for the The Wily ReMix Gauntlet 2011 as part of 'The Concrete Men'. I was a little irritated at first, as in my first mixing round, I had to incorporate the oh-so-popular Wily 1 from MM2 in with the Robot Master theme I had chosen, which was Cold Man from MM&B. Having already covered the source track 'For You', I was kinda shitty - I did not want to remix Wily 1 AGAIN. But I bit my tounge, got over the disappointment, became just a tad excited, and this is what I came up with. Being my first track in any remix compo EVER, I didn't exactly blend the two themes seamlessly... the first half of the track is basically Cold Man; the second half, Wily 1. But it was a start. I was going to go back to this and work on it a little more, but with so many other project tracks, competitions, work, real life, and of course VROOM on my plate, it's hard to find the time for anything these days, so I'm really hoping you guys and gals think this a worthy enough edition to OCR as is. I'm thrilled with the track, and a little proud. 'Far From Home' marks the first mix that I completed in a week, which was a big thing for me. I tend to drag things out, and working on this proved that I can work under stress and a time limit, and come up with something completely worthwhile. This is some pretty goddamned 80's sounding shit right here - probably one of the most authentic sounding retro tracks I've done. From the sampled Linn Linndrum percussion, Juno strings, various Bell & Synth samples and all that stuff. It isn't overly complicated (partially due to the time limit), it's straight to the point, and it's all about the hook. I love a good hook. So, it's cheesy as per usual, but you guys wouldn't expect any less. I like writing these kinds of vocal pop tracks, retro or not, and I'm not ever, ever going to stop. Ever. NOT EVER... ...and hey, it got me through the second round of the comp in first place, so yay! The lyrics are not game related, though I took the cue from Cold Man and incorporated some harsh weather into the lyrics. They pretty much speak for themselves. They're not overly deep, but they're not cruddy either, and I think they flow pretty well. Also, gotta send out a big, fat thanks to Jason Covenant/Prophecy/LOUDNESS GOD for adding the final mastering touches in regards to volume and such... awesome dude who taught/is teaching me a lot. So, that's about it guys, I hope this is enough to get through the panel, and you see fit to add this to my growing list of songs on OCR. Like I said, I'm really proud of this track. It's pretty close to my heart. It was awesome that I actually got this track into shape and done in a week, got it lyrically to where I felt it needed to be, and achieved the actual results that I wanted in the end. Thanks dude and dudettes - Hope this flies! -Robbie LYRICS: INTRO These eyes of mine take off the shine surrounding everything. There's nothing out there but bitter, frozen snow. We mend and then we fall again, like so many times before. I know my place, I'm quite home in the cold. VERSE I never said that it was gonna be easy I never thought this angry colour would suit me so well I can tell that you're done. The snow falls upon the icy freeze and this autumn paradise begins to shed it's leaves for the last time, as I tell you that I'm done. (Look how I've made you come undone.) CHORUS (Oh Oh Oh) I know you've taken me a million miles from home (Oh Oh Oh) But I really think that I am stronger here on own (Oh Oh Oh) I swear I never meant to end it this way, oh no Oooooooooohh -------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jdTmmnii94 - Cold Man - Wily
