Remixer Name: TheGuitahHeroe Real Name: Jamison Game: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (although the original song is from Castlevania Dracula X, the remix uses more elements from the PoR version) Songs Arranged: "Bloodlines Bequeathed" (so yeah, it's a remix of a remix ) (source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFAYyfMmIvQ) --The remix also includes a bit from the song "Hidden Curse," (1:48-2:01) also from Portrait of Ruin (source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar0SXjVyWSU), although I'm not sure that just this reference would count towards it being a remix of also this track. My guess is not (but can I at least get bonus points? ) Name of Remix: "The Whip's Memory" Ahh, love the music from this game. . . Portrait of Ruin is actually the only Castlevania I've played, and it was fantastic; especially the music. I'm not sure why I haven't gotten to playing any of the other ones yet. . . But oh well, on to the mix. Alright, so if you've ever listened to deadmau5, it's not hard to tell it had a huge influence over me throughout the creation of this track, hahaha. . . As well as some other (possibly) obvious influences you can find in there. Anyway, the creation of this mix involved an original idea of going mostly chiptune-style, but what I had just begged for rock-style drums. . . so in those went. Then after about 45 seconds or so I decided to put on my giant red mouse head and pound dem phat beatz (!!). Or, at least attempted to. The compression and percussion was a pain to get the way I wanted it to sound, but I'm overall pleased with the end result. Thanks a lot to Gario and Willrock for the great feedback on the WIP board! Hope you guys enjoy. ---------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFvTqdKvf74

OCRemix Song Submission: Links: Song name: Acque Luccicanti Contact Information: Your ReMixer name – Level 99 Your real name - Stevo Bortz Your email address – level99remixteam@gmail.com Your website – http://level99.thestuffoflegends.net/ Your userid – 13318 Submission Information Name of game(s) arranged – Super Mario 64 Name of individual song(s) arranged – Dire Dire Docks Composer: Koji Kondo (Game is already in site database) Comments on the song: Note: If passing, do not post anytime before September 2011. This is part of the Songs for the Cure 2011 album and, if it isn't posted in any initial OCR flood for the album's release, must wait six months after the release to be posted. Pull up a chair right over there and let me tell you a story. It's a story many years old, as old as time itself (or at least as old as 2005). In the two years prior to its demise, I was a regular contributor to VGMix 2.0. It was the first site I had a mix posted to, and helped me get to know a number of people who I still today call close friends (such as Luiza, Mr. Taucer, Brad Burr, and Jredd). I made an acoustic/electric arrangement of Dire Dire Docks called Just Keep Swimming, which was put on that site shortly before the site went down for the count. Last year, I wanted to challenge my musical growth from when I created that track by attempting to re-write it from scratch and get it up to par as an OC ReMix. While I was in the process of doing it, Josh Whelchel approached me and asked if I could join on to his Songs for the Cure 2011 charity. I happily agreed, and pulled the public WIPs of the song so that I could use it on the album. This song is, again, a mesh of acoustic and electric elements. There's a set of orchestral strings, particularly in the low end, and numerous choirs. There's also selective synths and pads. The song flows from a simple set of acoustic guitars through various transitions, adding drums, supporting instruments, and eventually switching feet to focus on electric guitars. At the end, the remaining instruments are "dragged underwater". If you'll pardon me for waxing poetic, I really wanted to convey the feeling of exploring underwater: the sheer amazement at a gorgeous, shimmering, underwater expanse that tickles one's curiosity while also looking alien compared to the world above ground. The farther one listens into the song, the deeper underwater they go, revealing more and more what is hidden beneath the glittering surface. Something-something-water-reference. Also, definitely check out the Songs for the Cure album! ~Stevo -----------------

OCR02974 - *YES* Super Mario 64 'Wings to the Sky'

[17:19] <Deia> i assume im not allowed to 'Typical Halc Mix, YES' more than once [17:19] <Deia> [17:19] <Andrew> been there, done that So, here we go. Chippy, fun, all in your style. This is an obvious direction to take the original, and I think you make it work while adding some new fun things on top. Nice use of the fire-flower *poink*, although it seems to stick out just a little too much for my liking. Use of panning is excellent, with 1:58 sticking out (melody-countermelody FTW). Couple nitpicks; I already mentioned the *poink* above for one. I'm not feeling the section at 0:43-0:58, it feels strange to me. Similarly, 1:05 feels more awkward than anything else. Maybe make the pause longer? Ending isn't terribly strong as well, and stops a bit abruptly. YES -
I like the arrangement here, nice work and no complaints for that. I'm not as sold on the production. Right now things feel kind of subdued overall, and it's killing the energy for me. Guitars overall feel a little dry, and I'd like more bass in general. Kinda borderline due to those aspects, and knowing you can make it better, I'd rather throw it back at'cha than see it squeak by. I'm not quite sure this is in desperate need of critique in any way. You have an excellent soundscape, with instruments/synths that all compliment each other well. Balance is good, and mixing as well. Arrangement-wise, you've got plenty of source, and I like how it hints at the source before coming in fully at 1:28. The second half feels a little repetitious, mostly because the soundscape doesnt change up and the arrangement is similar, but that's being nitpicky. Fun listen. YES -
PROJECT HOLD: Final Fantasy - Random Encounter remixer name: Benjamin Briggs game: Final Fantasy I song: Town comments: Thanks to the ever source-deaf Palpable for helping me decide if this one was ready for the submissions queue. Brandon Strader pestered me into doing this remix. The title is kind of a joke about how I thought I had a kidney stone. *NO* World Cup Italia '90 'The Dreamchaser' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
This is an ambitious remix, and as usually you have shown some expansion on your own personal writing style. That being said, I understand what you are trying to go for with the different acts, but I don't know if it's really working in practice. Personally, the mix feels disjointed rather than progressing through the different sections. Could just be me, so I'll invite the other judges to weigh in on this as well. On the plus, this is showing a lot more source used throughout, and the original sections are there, but kept brief, a definite improvement over last time. As always, thanks for the breakdown! The real issue here is samples and production. Overall every sample feels pretty week to me, and its compounded by the fact that almost every sample is exposed, making all the weaknesses stand out further. The delay/echo on the piano is also making things feel out of time, as a side note. I'm inclined to say that the mix feels a little sparse at times, but honestly it might be the samples as well, it's hard to tell. Not doing it for me, sorry. NO (resubmit) -
Listened again after looking at OA's and Nutritious' comments, and I do have to agree with them both. The arrangement you have is sweet, but the second half is very similar to the first, and there are some balance issues that could be fixed up. Really hope you look this one over! NO (resubmit)

Natural choice to take this theme, and there's a lot of promise here, but there's also a lot of things that need to be addressed. Right away I can hear that the balance is off; bass is pretty loud overall (cool riff though), as well as the rhythm guitars. Also, the bass especially feels like it's in a totally dead space, and could use some reverb. Arrangement-wise this sticks close to the original, as noted by the '(cover)' in your embedded title. For OCR there needs to be more interpretation and arrangement on the source. There is some good interpretation you've done, but there needs to be more! Also, I'm noting a few wrong notes which stick out pretty clearly to me (1:39 is one example). You can definitely work up to getting accepted here if you adjust your arrangement ideas and production overall, keep working at it! NO (resubmit)

Definitely some awesome stuff going on here. I like the arrangement, you've really expanded on the theme well, and everything is pretty clear. I'd have liked the main synth line to be less mechanical overall, but it's not a dealbreaker. Similarly, I'm hearing an interesting hum right at the end of the song. It's probably present throughout more of it, but you can only hear it when things calm down at the end. Again, not a dealbreaker, but something to note for future mixin's. YES

*NO* Space Quest 3 'Thermal Unders' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I can tell you condensed the opening, which is good, because things start to move a lot faster. The arrangement otherwise stays pretty much the same, which works for me. I think the production is still holding this one back, namely the overall sounds being thin, and the balance is still not totally working as well as it should. Some percussion sounds too far back, and other parts (like the cymbal) are a too far forward. I think it's closer, but it's still not there. NO -
*NO* Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 'Objection'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I was really happy to hear this starting out, because this is a fantastic and unique way to take the source. I have to say though, I'm not hearing (aside from the little bell synth) any source from 0:20-1:08, which is a majority of the mix. I'm sure you can find a way to incorporate the source into that verse (especially if you added more)! Halc's got the mixing issues down. Right now a lot of stuff is fighting with each other in the arrangement, making it hard to make out parts at all. It would be great if you could get things cleared up. Really fun, I want to hear this again! NO (resubmit, please) -
OCR02367 - *YES* Sonic Adventure 'Chaos Nightmares'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Not much different from what Drew's already said. It's a bit conservative, but there's plenty here to separate it from the original, and going for the autotuned vocals adds a different flavor. Again copying Drew that the vocals could come out a little more, but they're still clear. YES -
*NO* Top Gear 'Losing the race, like every time'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Aside from the opening riff from the source, I'm not hearing a strong connection to the Top Gear track. Maybe another judge can help me out there. Arrangement aside, I think the bass is being overpowered by the lead synths. I'm personally not feeling the cymbals throughout the mix, they feel like they turn into a big hiss throughout. A lot of the sequencing overall feels very mechanical as well, which is especially noticeable in the backing pads. Some mixing touchups, but definitely needs more source. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* King of Fighters '96 'Son of the Sun'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Maybe another judge can point out something I'm missing here, but overall I'm not hearing a lot of source, aside from the opening riff and whenever it is played again. Aside from that I'm liking the soundscape you have going on here. The soloing is nice, and the balance is pretty good. Drums could stand to be a little more interesting, but they aren't totally on autopilot. NO (resubmit) -

When I first heard the source, it absolutely screamed "guitar-laced DnB" to me. So, with the help of my friend Paul Capps (who played the guitars and did an excellent job), this mix came about. Recommended dosage is at 110 dB, preferably with multicolored and flashing lights involved. Please rock out responsibly. --

Nutritious Justin Medford 16520 Cave Story Final Battle This submission really is me coming full circle. The first mix I ever submitted to ocr was for this same source tune - which was given up on after 3 rejections . This is a completely different take on the source, going for some sort of orchestral/pendulum combination. Given my first few mixes, people seem to be taken back when I do something that's not straight orchestral. So I tried to throw in a bit of a surprise with the beat/synths & later vocals. I spent a lot more time processing the vocals than I ever have previously. I used 4 different vocoders on and off throughout the mix, as well as autotuned harmonies for the pre-chorus and bridge. I tried to get as big a sound as possible (a la Pendulum) once everything kicks in - which I think I accomplished a LOT more effectively with this mix than my previous Return All Robots submission. Source-wise, this is admittedly a bit more on the liberal side than my usual. The intro and verses only really connect to the source via chord usage. Source should be pretty apparent, though, when the beat & synths kick in, as well as pre-chorus, bridge, & instrumental chorus. The darkest night These hopeless days Still we are waiting To touch the source As all life prays Hope keeps on fading As dawn draws near Ignite in me Fire consuming They try to break The light we bring But still we are moving on Fate Killing our time Spending our lives Fighting alone Faith Filling our souls Willing us fight You're not alone Deep in silence Darkness blinds us Will you break these Chains that bind us You're not alone You're not alone You're not alone ------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0pFBWAMvo4
