  1. This is a pretty fun arrangement of a pretty generic source. I like that you've broken this up into sections that provides new and fresh ideas on the source. I especially like how you put the source into the trumpet solo at the end. Nice work arrangement-wise. Production is holding this back a little. I'm still hearing parts of this as mechanical, especially the flute. I'm also noticing the flute notes cut off awkwardly sometimes (I didn't pick up on that before, my bad). I don't think it's a deal-breaker, but it is noticeable. I like this overall. YES
  2. There's something about the opening that is bugging me, almost like the first chord to come in isn't right, but I think it might just be me. You've got a pretty powerful arrangement going on here. The song doesn't stray too far from the original structurally for most of the mix, but you do add your own flair to it, which is nice (kind of amusing describing any part of a metal song as 'nice'). I think this does go on for a bit longer than it needs to; it doesn't exactly get repetitive, but you do hear the same sections of the song multiple times, which starts to wear on you after a while. I'm overall not crazy with the sudden breakdown, it comes out of nowhere, although the lead back into things is much better. I'm not feeling how the opening drowns out the guitar, and there are times throughout that the balance isn't exactly where it needs to be. Overall the leads could come out a tad more. Rhythm guitars overall feel a bit muddy and unclear. I've gone back and forth on this one, meaning it's pretty close, but I think getting those issues fixed up will do a lot of good for this. NO (resubmit)
  3. Mak, super glad you've been keeping up with submitting, because I'm hearing a lot of improvement in you over your submissions. There's quite a lot of energy in this one, which is really cool to hear. The arrangement itself adds a lot of personalization to this. There are a couple times where things get a little repetitive or stagnant, mostly the ares between your bigger sections, but they are pretty short overall and aren't much of an issue. I'm noticing a lot of production issues, all of which are minor, but they unfortunately do add up. The good thing is that they'res nothing huge that is sticking out to me, showing your improvement. The balance overall is still not quite where it needs to be; some instruments are being overpowered or sticking out too much. Guitars are a little too loud overall. The synth starting at 0:53 gets (honestly) annoying, and could come down in volume. Drums are being overpowered at 1:27. Those are just a couple examples, but overall you should look through carefully, or get some other ears to point out all different points. Serious improvement here, and it has some ways to go, but you're getting there! NO (resubmit)
  4. Little to say about this mix except that it is pretty damn solid. Quality work from both mixers, you can't tell that this is a collab just from listening, meaning you two are working super well together. Source is treated really nicely here, and I love the background, as anosou writes so nicely himself: [11:34] <@anosou> BAOW BA BA BAOWOWOW halc BAOW BABAB BOABOWOWOWOWOW anosou Balance is clear, soundscape is fitting. I'd take this to the dancefloor. YES
  5. Ok, I gave this another listen. I think having it on repeat sorta melded the opening/ending together, which is how I missed the lack of source for the ending section. I'm taking full credit for missing it, apologies to Jewbei and to you guys for the mix-up. Regardless, this mix still has a ton of potential, and I'd love to see you refine it and send it back to us. Sorry for the mix-up! NO (resubmit, please!)
  6. So....I listened to this a lot. And thought about it quite a bit. And I have surprisingly little to say about it. It's quirky, and it works surprisingly well, but you definitely need to warm up to it. Pretty cool. YES
  7. I'm torn on this one, because I definitely think it's improved, but I feel like the balance isn't there yet. I'm hearing a lot of the drums, and to be honest, not a lot of the main melodies that are being overpowered for a lot of the track. I think this still needs a look-over to find bring out those lead instruments more. 1:20 is a good example of this; when I sit back and listen, the biggest thing I'm hearing is the drums, and the melody isn't coming to mind first. I think I'm hearing some clipping at the end as well, if someone could confirm that would be great. I hope you get this one fixed up and send it in, the arrangement is really great. NO (please resubmit!)
  8. Gotta agree with Andrew on this. You've really worked the source well here, and it's very awesome seeing you perform this live as well! You've got a knack for improvising, and I love the emotion you've put into an already very emotional piece. I've got nothing against this at all. YES
  9. Lots of good things going on here. The adaption of the source into the downtempo relaxed feel is pretty nice, and I think for the most part you've treated it well. I'm not crazy about your transitions between the sections, especially the 1:55(ish) transition. Aside from that I was feeling the arrangement, although the fade-out ending was a bit cliché. Production is a bit of a mixed bag for me. The bell synth comes in pretty piercingly, and really needs to be toned down. Overall I think the bass could have a tad more presence, and it doesn't feel like you've got much in the mids to bring together your two extremes. Piano itself is alright, although I don't think it would stand by itself in a solo mix. I'm liking this, but I think it needs those revisions before it's ready. NO (please resubmit)
  10. Interesting take on the source. It took me a few listens to hone in on how you were using the source, and overall I think this is a bit of a tenuous connection overall. Maybe someone who is hardcore solid with the soundtrack could pick this out, but I'm having a tough time, despite multiple listens of both the source and the mix back-to-back. Drumwork is pretty solid all around, kudos on that. They really work with the track nicely. Can't say I'm a fan of the lead guitar sound overall, I think you could stand to change that up with a better sample. After the bass intro and one other section, I feel like the low end is lacking, and could use more presence as well. Ending cuts of somewhat abruptly, please check on that! If you can make the source connection more solid and look at some of those production tweaks, I think you'll be taking this in the right direction. NO (resubmit)
  11. This is definitely a loud mix. My ears get pretty tired after a couple of listens. It works for the style, although I think this could come down a bit. Balance is off in some sections, where it's hard to hear anything over the chugging guitars at times. The arrangement is there, although it starts to get repetitive after a while with the same riff used for much of the track. I think it could stand for some more interpretation. The ending is also very abrupt; the song just stops. Good to see you submitting again, hope you look this over and send it back. NO (resubmit)
  12. Hey guys, been a while since I submitted something, 9 years I think? Had this one sitting around since the end of last year and have been quite busy with work, travel and study so never got around to submitting it. I always used to sit around playing riffs from this song when micing up cabs for testing recording tones and always thought about making a full remix, after my poor old 5150 died a while back I was fiddling with my Sansamp PSA-1 a lot to try and get some neat industrial tones, and again ended up riffing this thing out, as it always stuck in my head from my endless years of playing Quake II so I decided to make a complete arrangement for once. I always wanted to drop the tuning of this song a bit and make a more aggressive, more metal version of the original. I probably started and never finished various versions of this track at least 5 or 6 times over the years, and I'm pretty happy with this one, hope you enjoy it! Production wise, drums were played on my electric kit via MIDI into a drum sampler, guitars and bass done through the PSA-1, synths were programmed in Reason via rewire, all was edited, mixed, mastered, etc. in Cubase. 13. Definitely had a fun time listening to this, despite also having a surprisingly difficult time wrapping my brain around the source at times (I blame being tired). Makes more sense now, and I love how you've made the source very upbeat. As Andrew said, the mechanical treatment of the lead was stylistic, and certainly works for the track. YES
  14. Definitely a nice source here, and you've arranged this very nicely. Right now the first half of the arrangement is very conservative, too much so for the site's standards in my opinion. After that you delve into some original material that fits nicely with the source tune, although they are side-by-side rather than working together. It would be great if you could interspace your original work with the source. I will agree that this would benefit from some live players, and there are plenty in the community, I'm sure you could dig someone up willing to lend you a hand in playing some of this! As it is, the sounds aren't the greatest, but I think for the most part they work in this context. I would consider changing having the strings a guitars double, however, since the slower string attack makes it not line up well with the guitar attack, and overall it sounds sloppy. So, mix up your original work with the source more, fix a couple tweaks, and maybe find a player or two! NO (resubmit)
  15. I have to admit that when I downloaded the 1.2 MB file, I wasn't expecting much from this. I can definitely say that you've surprised me with the way you've approached the source here, and it's certainly an enjoyable listen. However, listening to this further, I'm realizing that you run through the source melody twice in nearly identical fashion both times, with an intro and and outtro as well. There simply needs to be more interpretation here for a pass. You've definitely got the skills to do so, and I hope to hear more from you in the future! NO (resubmit?)

Link to the Original Soundtrack Song (Source): Additional ReMix Comments: Late in Summer 2010, a well-respected OCR community member informed me of the DKC3 album project and suggested that I contact Emunator, despite the fact that all of the tracks were reserved at the time. I was told that a track likely would be dropped, and in this case, it was Cranky's Dojo. It was an excellent opportunity that I was honoured to seize, especially since I had no posted ReMixes on the site. I selected the Roland Fantom X6 workstation keyboard to remix the track, and began compiling various samples from Roland's World Collection and Complete Orchestra expansion boards. Being a past MIDI transcriber, I wanted to sequence Cranky's Dojo accurately and build from there. My original WIP was nothing more than a transcription with an improvised synth lead, but it was accepted and it was the beginning of a long line of ideas for the remix I dubbed "Cranky's Mojo." My original plan was to have a bit of a dance section and mix in a Chinese-Japanese refrain, but the dance part became sort of a synth rock hybrid. While performing a trumpet solo improv overlay on Yoshi's "Tropical Island" from Mario Party, I got the idea of using the sample for a jazzy section of the piece, and it was then that I realised I would separate my remix into movements. A new chord progression for the source melody came to mind and I went on to use it for the aforementioned East-Asian part of the arrangement. After many hours of labour, I can say that I'm quite pleased with the results. A moody intro, an upbeat rock section with a lot of source, an Oriental section, and a 1940s sassy swing make this remix very dynamic. Many thanks go to Bahamut, Nutritious, Emunator, Cody Wedel, DragonAvenger, Flexstyle, and all those who helped make this possible. Sincerely, Peach ----------------

Took probably over a year to make in full, and many brass takes were needed in order to get the timing as close as we could. Much harder rock than the Kirby track. 18. Dear OverClocked Remix Judges: This is my first submission. Below is a link to the hosted file, as well as the required information. Right-clicking and "Save Link As" should get you a download of the .mp3 file. Remixer Name: Mega Beardo Real Name: Ryan Postlethwait website: beardomusic.blogspot.com Forum ID: 43648 Game Arranged: Castlevania Song Arranged: "Heart of Fire" Comments: All of my VGM remixes thus far are guitar re-arrangements. I tend to lean more into the metal genre; Castlevania lends itself pretty naturally to that style of music as well. With my remixes, I like to learn all of the bass lines, melodies, and harmonies first. Then I start jamming on a certain idea to see what kind of originality can come out of it. For this remix, this is evident from the very beginning; I took the baseline underneath the main melody, added my own "voice," and used it as the basis for the intro. I also like to introduce dynamics by stripping down a certain melody into a completely different idea. The second half of my remix includes the chord progression from one section and specific notes from another melody to build a much more melodic dynamic ending. It is hard to put into words, but hopefully my intentions were clear once the clean guitar interlude kicks in. I use Sony Acid Pro 6.0 for recording, and I program the drums with Drumkit from Hell. My guitar of choice is an Epiphone SG G-400 that I have used and abused for the past 13 years. I run that through an Orange Tiny Terror head and into a Marshall cabinet. The cabinet is mic'ed using a really crappy Nady mic that I bought 5 years ago for $15 and am very surprised it is still in working condition. I record my bass tracks through a POD XT. --------------------------
  19. Name: The White Rider Your ReMixer name: Brandon Strader Your real name: Brandon E. Strader Your email address: oinkness@gmail.com Your website: http://www.bstrader.net/ Your userid: 3123 Name of game(s) arranged: Final Fantasy Name of individual song(s) arranged: Airship Squaresoft; 1987 Hi. I hope you don't mind that this last batch of submissions were all from FF1 project. I just haven't had a chance to work on anything else lately. I actually used the "updated" version of this song (GBA, PSX, etc) as a reference. It's a little slower than the NES version, but I think I mainly focused on the melodies that were in the NES version. Hey, we used both versions of the soundtrack when making the FF1 album. So I'm going to copy/paste what I already wrote in the artist comments for this song for the project, but also possibly give some additional insight. Here goes: "If you had asked me in January 2010 (at the start of the FF1 project) which song I would end up doing, Airship wouldn't have been it. It wasn't even on my radar. I love every song from FF1 -except- for Airship. At least, I used to dislike it. I made a mix for Airship that ended up being far too much like "dark pop", so I scrapped that and redid a new version of the song. The idea this time was to do something in the realm of power metal, though I don't think it actually came out that way. I wrote joke lyrics and did vocals, but they "made" the song so I just had to keep them. The first riff with the lead from the source sets the tone. In the following verse riff, the vocals sing the lead from the source. The chorus is original, but it doesn't linger on that for too long. The White Rider was a joy to make, and I hope it gives people a little chuckle -- while they bob their heads! The title is a tribute to the band Camel, with the excerpt titled The White Rider from their brilliant 1974 album, "Mirage"." Ok, a little additional insight I guess. Source breakdown; bubbly synth echo-ey intro, some powerchords (just some tension building stuff really, if you guys need me to chop the tension bits off for source reasons, aight) then it hits the rockin' bit with the source melody. Then it drops into the verse where the guitars are playing the source rhythm and the vocals are following the source lead melody. The chorus bit was original, but hey, you've GOT to have a chorus for a rock song, and there was nothing left to use in the source. Already used the source, basically twice, for that first riff then the verse and bridge bit. So yeah, rock song layout, verse, bridge, chorus, with that added lead source bit for the opening and closing, the "tension building" riff again at the end silenced quickly by a record needle noise. Shoutout to OA who suggested ending it like that to cut down on some of the time and not fade out with the echoey synth. I also chopped about half of the echoey intro too, just to get into the song faster. I probably wouldn't have really subbed this except OA said it was passable, so I was encouraged.. Hope ya'll enjoy it and the album. o_o Oh yeah, the lyrics.. Now we're flying through the air without a care On a ship made out of wood, who knows how it works!? Flying through the sky.... If we fight then we may die... If we stay up here we're safe, To avoid the trolls and the snakes! As we chose to fly above, The ones below us are breathing their last breaths We are focused on our goal A task we must complete without regrets Parking our ship in a field, we take a stroll Coming up to meet us there is a filthy troll!!! I whip out my sword... To embrace the monster horde... Black Mage casts a spell To send them all to burning hell! Then we chose to fly above, The ones below us are breathing their last breaths We are focused on our goal A task we must complete without regrets -------------------------------------

Obviously, I was obliged to take on this epic request and whipped up a short intro (which went untouched for months ). Mattias finally sent me a slick little update about a week before the final deadline, which I expanded on and used as a basis for the rest of the track. I was happy to take the lead with this mix, but I must give uber-props to anosou for some killer additions and arrangement ideas- I couldn't have pulled this track off without him (A++, would collab again, etc.)! We're both very proud of this mix, and we hope you all enjoy it! :3 This mix was lovingly conceived in Reason 5 and FL Studio 9 (The Best of Both Worlds!™)" Mattias' comments: "Drew's a bag of sex. She shows me a video of the gameplay, commenting about how fun it looks, and mentions that the music is great too. She plays me her favorite track. I listen to and notice: it is awesome. 22. This is pretty cool, and you've done a lot of good work with a strange source. The title is pretty apt, this has a sort of reflective, mysterious feel to it, which is a lot of fun to listen to. I'd say that this does run a little long, but it still does manage to stay pretty varied throughout, and the source connection is there. YES
  23. I will admit to being a sucker for this kind of 'somber right before the final battle' music. I like how you've treated the source, and your reasoning behind it. Conner's voice works pretty well for this, and I think this is one of his better performances. I'd still suggest working on your breath support, especially for the opening line (slow, quiet, low lines are not easy by any means). Production works pretty well, although I think the drums could use a little more presence, especially the bass drum. Background strings could also use a touch of vibrato to add a little motion to them. I like it. YES
