OCR02459 - *YES* Mega Man X5 'Zero's Plight'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
He mastered his track now. I changed the link above as well. This addresses all the issues except the arrangement side of things. In light of the other issues being resolved for me, I'm willing to change my vote to a YES (although somewhat borderline in terms of arrangement). -
My brain has melted from that.

OCR02391 - *YES* Pokémon Red Version 'Spume'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I have to agree with Jesse that this song is weird, and it took a while for me to wrap my head around it. I think what it comes down to in the end for me is that there doesn't seem to be melodic direction for quite a big of this, which is what's making it feel repetitive. Along with that, there just seem to be a lot of strange note choices for the background compared to the melody. That being said, there is certainly source in there, and there is plenty of interpretation on it. Production is also fine, no qualms there. Not an easy choice. I think the tracks positives do outweigh the negatives in the end, although I would have liked the track to be a little more directional. YES (borderline) -
*NO* Pokémon Red Version 'Moondrops'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Going to disagree with Vig on a lot of this. I thought you did a pretty good job on taking the source in a new direction, and while laid-back, definitely has a lot of elements to keep it interesting. I will agree, though, that the pause in the middle is pretty momentum-stopping, and I felt not a good choice for the mix. I also won't disagree that there are times where the overall direction of the mix isn't clear, though I didn't have too much of an issue with it. I think this one is a close call, but to me it's over the bar. Good luck with the rest of the vote. YES -
*NO* Zero Wing 'For Great Justice'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Andrew's got this pretty solid. The arrangement is pretty good, and the opening is very amusing to listen to, but the production is holding this back. Compression needs to come down a bit, but mostly the balance is good, just needs some tweaks. The sloppier playing needs to be cleaned up, which Andrew also brought up, but overall it's cleaner than some other stuff I've heard from you. Fix it up, send it back in, NO (resubmit) -
[April Fools 2011] OC ReMix Reveals FULL 2011 Album Lineup!
DragonAvenger replied to DarkeSword's topic in General Discussion
I'm curious to hear which albums you guys liked the best, thought were the funniest, and are most disappointed about. I loved Street Fighter: The Game: The Move: The ReMix Album, especially with the description written for it. -

The idea for "Finality" was to not only interpret the musical theme, but also the theme of the zone itself. In this case the song is about the finality of death, and the inevitability of mortality. After I worked on the backing track and lyrics, Cyril the Wolf http://ocremix.org/artist/5473/cyril-the-wolf was gracious enough to provide his vocal for it, and brought in vocal ideas that I believe strengthened the overall arrangement. -----------------------

ReMixer name: Sockpuppet (for now... I'll probably change it later ) userid: 27176 Game arranged: Pokemon Red Song arranged: 'Mt. Moon Cave' ReMix Title: 'Moondrops' Link: Comments: While I think the general hatred towards the Pokemon soundtrack here is largely undeserved, I have to admit that this particular source tune is kinda crap. However I do kind of like the first section, and it was this bit that got stuck in my head, which lead to me making this remix. This was all done in Reason. At first I was going to make it a lot more like the original but after messing around with it on the keyboard for a bit I decided to convert it from minor to major (I think...). And then I realized that this made the majority of the source completely unusable... =/ As a result this remix is pretty liberal, but I think it's still over the minimum source usage limit. You can completely ignore the middle section, because I didn't use it. 0:00-1:55 and 4:06-5:36 of the remix are based on 0:00-0:24 of the original, and 2:20-4:03 of the remix is based on 1:10-1:19 of the original. Finally, I need to thank a few people. Emunator is responsible for naming the remix (which he did while listening to it for the first time, and it was a lot better than anything I came up with during the 3 or so weeks I spent making it. XD). And Tydin very kindly offered to take the project file and fix up a few reverb issues for me. Thanks a lot guys! -------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz29y40RjsY

I'm pretty sure the last games I've done 100% were Chrono Trigger and Yoshi's Island. Usually I try to do some of the after-quests, and just lose interest after a while.

OCR02452 - *YES* Final Fantasy 'Secrets Abound'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Super upbeat, which is a fun take on the theme. The playing is clean, and everything is well-balanced. As you said, there isn't a huge amount of variation on the theme, but the personalization factor is there, and you have a good solo section. Overall, this isn't the most unique take on the theme, but it gets the job done nicely. YES -

I took the original arrangement of Matoya's Cave and meshed it with my original style--which consists of classical, rock, progressive rock, and metal. I stayed fairly close to the original composition throughout most of the track, aiming to mimic the sound of the orchestral instruments used with just my guitar, amp, and very few Boss Pedal effects. I added an interlude and solo section in the middle of the track to highlight my unique style of lead guitar work over a chord progression reminiscent of the original track. ------------------

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 2 'Metal Cover'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
This was submitted at the same time as the Song of Storms metal cover (which wasn't really a cover, and neither is this). Pretty much both songs have the same issues. Overall it's short, which isn't really allowing enough time to expand on the theme. Along with that, the drums are a little basic, and the rhythm guitars could have a little more oomph to them. Hope to hear more from you, NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld 'SoNICO Colors'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
There are some points where I don't think you give yourself as much credit for source usage as you should, but overall I think there's plenty in there anyways. Overall this arrangement is a laid-back take on the themes, most predominantly using 'How many players'. I found the transitions to be pretty good overall, and the way you incorporate the sources is subtle. If I didn't know better, I would have not noticed that you used three sources overall. As you said, the sounds are lo-fi, but I think you make them work with the themes. I do feel that the drumwork overall doesn't really fit the track in a lot of sections. It's not enough to bring this to a NO, but definitely noticeable to me. YES -

*NO* Final Fantasy 'The Power of Cornelia'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Right off it feels like the leads are getting overpowered by everything, which isn't surprising considering how hard everything's being pushed. Lots of compression on this overall, which I think you need to pull back so you can even the balance out on this. Arrangement is a bit straightforward, but certainly adequate, with some nice riffs and changes to minor here and there. Overall the playing is pretty sweet, no complaints there. The ending is pretty abrupt, I think you can do more with that as well. Needs some tweaks, but it's on the right track. NO (resubmit) -
Game: Final Fantasy Song: Cornelia Castle Original Composer: Nobuo Uematsu Remixer: Knight_of_the_Round Real name: Justin Taylor UserID: 43205 Email: jmantwc@gmail.com Original song link: *Project track for "Final Fantasy: Random Encounter"* Well, I was recruited by Brandon Strader to do a track for his metal based Final Fantasy 1 album about a year ago, which lead to this track. I went for a more power-metal approach for this remix, given that the source is super-duper epic. I couldn't resist adding a polyrhythmic breakdown to the end, however Remixing this song was pretty difficult because the source is only 19 seconds long. Fortunately, the source has 2 melodies playing over each other, so I was able to break these up into 2 parts. For the rest of the song, I wrote some riffs using the same scale and/or chord structure. Hope you guys enjoy this! All drums were programmed via EZDrummer through Sony Acid, then sound replaced w/ Slate Trigger. Guitars were recorded with an 8 string guitar (tuned to dropped Eb) being played through an ENGL Fireball 60W head, into 2 VHT Fatbottom 4x12 cabinet (one with p50E's and one with V30's), mic'd with a Shure SM57 and an Audix I5, in addition to running a clean track through a marshall amp sim in PodFarm. Bass was recorded direct through a TechNYC SansAmp Bass Driver, then ran into PodFarm. I used Izotope Ozone3 for mastering. -------------------

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld 'SoNICO Colors'

Contact Information Blue Magic (Damon Campbell) bluemagic1984@hotmail.com ID# 4656 Submission Information Game Remixed: Sonic the Hedgehog's GameWorld (Sega PICO) I'm not really sure what the name of these songs are, so I'll link you to the YouTube Video: Source used in the video: @ 00:45 (How many players screen). I used this source at the 0:00-0:20 mark. Kinda did a freestyle from 0:21-1:00 mark. Source used in video: @ 1:09 (Car Race). I used this at the 1:00-1:20 mark. Source used in video: YAY!!! Used at the 1:19 & 2:48 marks. Another freestyle from 1:20-1:40. Source used in the video: @ 00:45 (How many players screen). I used this source at the 1:40-1:50 mark. Source used from video: @9:33 (The battle is over). Used from 1:50-2:10. Freestyle from 2:10-2:30. Source used in video: @ 1:09 (Car Race). I used this at the 2:30-2:50 mark. Freestyle from 2:50-3:10. Source used in the video: @ 00:45 (How many players screen). I used this source at the 3:10. I hope I didn't make that confusing... I this mix I wanted to make this mix using some lo-fi samples to create sort of a "retro" feel, while at the same time, making something that sounds like it could have been on the Sonic Colors soundtrack. I wanted it to be kind fast pace. This mix is the most difficult one I've done to date because of the short source tunes, but I still had fun doing it. You can find the mix posted on my web page here: Thanks and enjoy, Damon -------------------- - 0:45, 1:09, 9:33 -
Flik, if you went to the direct ustream, they mention that the third egg is expected to hatch in a couple days from the first two, so it's likely to still be on the way.

Happy birthday!

Yup, just wanted to see what the other people thought.

Anyone feel bad about the third unhatched chick? It's probably going to die from starvation. Or it will be pushed out of the nest by the other two.

*NO* VVVVVV 'Things Are Possible'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Source tune is completely awesome, good choice there! I really like a lot of the arrangement ideas you've got here, but I think this starts to get a little repetitive. I'd consider dropping one of the more similar sections towards the end to condense this and allow the different sections to shine through a little more. Aside from that I have no issues with this on the arrangement side. Production has is flaws, however. First off, the lead synth is being totally overpowered by the (pretty awesome, IMO) background. As it is, the synth itself doesn't feel like it cuts it as a lead synth at times. A change-up might be good for the listener's ears, anyways, as the same sounds are used pretty much throughout the mix. Really liked hearing this one, and I think it's a good candidate for a resub. NO (resubmit, please)
