  1. 2 is a Pacman ghost definately... 3.. Looks like Mia from the first Lunar.. I think anyway.

You know, it *does* look like Mia. In spite of... not being Mia. ^^ I might have done a bad job trying to depict that one. Couldn't find official art and just went with my memory of the sprite.

1 has to be that guy called Lyle from Phantasy Star 3.

Wow. You, sir, are my new hero. I wasn't sure anyone would get that one, but you totally did. XD

  2. Are you sure? Looks orange-ish to me. I think it could be Clyde.

Maybe Blinky and Clyde's bastard offspring, Clinky?

    Blinde?

No. 1 kind of looks like Sothe from Fire Emblem.

No.1 isn't Sothe. But! The Pac Man ghost is supposed to be Blinky, and looks red on my screen.

Clinky should totally be a new Pac Man ghost.

  3. Note: I'm putting this here in Community since this is game related, so I *think* this would be the right spot for this kind of thing. If not, apologies in advance. ^_^;

I thought it'd be fun to have a thread in which everyone can draw video game characters and other people guess what characters they are. They can be well known characters or characters from lesser known games. The style of art can be done in any medium any way. Digital, pencil, MSPaint, abstract. The point is to have fun, basically, not churn out masterpieces (so no using the "I can't draw" excuse! :P).

I'ma start it out with 3 characters.

  4. I've been wanting some new music lately. An album or two at most. Rather than get something mainstream or overpriced, I was thinking of picking up something original done by peeps in the OCR community. So I was curious if anyone had any recommendations as to what to pick up.

Whatever recommendations people have, I'd really prefer if the album had a demo of some kind (few seconds of each track, or just something to listen to so I have some idea what it is) and would also prefer if there was a downloadable version so I don't *have* to order a physical copy.

Shameless self promotion of your own album is A-OK too.

  5. Apologies if Breath of Fire 1 avatars have already been posted for future consideration, but the thread is reeeeally long so admittedly I haven't scoured it to see what has and hasn't been uploaded.

LT: We had Breathe of Fire 2, not 1. These were too dark, so I brightened them. Good to go.

  6. Ah, okay. I like all their designs. So props to original creators and whatnot. XD And thanks Halycon, BGC, and Kyle.

I attempted her darker to fit in better with a dark theme and that probably would have been better accomplished if I had stayed away from the browns. Ah well.

Not as detailed as it should be since I lost mah mojo towards the end. Blur tool abuse ftl.

  7. I hope no one minds me bumping this thread since it hasn't received any replies for a while... Just seemed silly to start a new thread when this was already here.

Going through this thread was fun. I really liked all the pictures and the concept of OCR having a mascot and all that. Who designed each tan? Blackmyst designed number 4, right? What about the others then?

Also did a quick one of number 4, myself.

  8. I recently got the PSP version of FFT. I am loving the translation, even if they do ham it up a bit with the dialogue. (If the dialogue in FF12 bothered you, I'm not sure you'd like the re-translation for FFT...) I am not loving that Olan is very stupid and gets himself killed so I can't proceed past that battle. :( I never had trouble there on the PS version.

The slowdown doesn't bother me *too* much, since most strategy games I've played are a little slow in pace. But it is kinda hard to press through it right after playing Disgaea, which is faaast.

  9. Honestly Martial Law is one of those tracks from FF6 that didn't *really* stand out to me. Sure it sets the mood but it was kind of meh compared to some of the greats of the OST. So my initial reaction to seeing Nutritious had done something from FF6 was yay! ...then faded to meh when I saw just what it was he covered.

But I gave it a listen and I have to say I'm glad I did. I love the tense atmosphere that the song sets right from the get go, and the mood it sets throughout the rest of the song. It has the softer moments, sure, but it's still not what I'd call a laid back song, however it doesn't sound like it's trying too hard, nor does it have too much going on. Yet it still manages to breath some life into what I felt was a ho hum original.

Samples and sound are all good. Nothing sounds overtly fake to me and the two sources are blended together flawlessly. I'd suggest definitely checking this one out.

  10. *pose* 25 milestone here too. Hooray morning of free time! And geez OA, you're a reviewing beast. XD

This isn't nearly as hard or tedious as I thought it might be either. Any excuse to sit and listen to music from this site is a good one. Writing my thoughts on it afterward isn't too tough either as long as I tell myself it doesn't have to be a novel.

  11. Wizardry ftw. Why does Wizardry not get more love than it gets? :(

This is a very catchy tune, which is to be expected given the fact the original is catchy as well. I like that the title isn't misleading either - this song has a sort of medieval flair to it that makes it all the more enjoyable to me. The strings at the beginning leads into the song effectively, which doesn't deviate too much from the original. There isn't much variance from there, but it is kept pretty short so I can't really complain about that. Normally I'd say that the song should have been longer, but I think this is an instance where the shortness works.

Even if you haven't heard of Wizardry or played it, you should check this one out. It's a good mix with a mood to it that I rarely hear in songs.

  12. Ever since I downloaded this song (years ago) it has remained in my BoF music folder because there's not enough Breath of Fire love out there and this song is amazing.

What I like about this medley is that it doesn't feel like just a song. It feels like it's telling a story. It starts out sad in the beginning and gradually builds itself up into something more epic with the battle theme. The sound effects during said battle theme are a really nice touch and adds to the mood of the piece. Then we get the victory theme and more uplifting music that really adds to the resolution. In spite of all this shifting around of mood and song, it's done in a way that it flows seamlessly.

The sound is good and the arrangement is just... clever. I do kind of feel like this would be more appreciated by fans of Breath of Fire, but that doesn't mean you should bypass it if you haven't played it. Definitely give it a listen!

  13. I used to listen to this quite a bit back in the day, but unfortunately it just got put on the sidelines in my storage folder and forgotten. :\ What's different about this is I'm not familiar with the source tune or the source *at all*. And usually when that's the case, I don't listen to a remix. There's a lot on OCR so I generally stick to what I know. I dunno what prompted me to listen to this back in the day, but I remember liking it a lot. Listening to it now? I still like it.

Deim0s does that ambient thing here and they do it well. The strings and the piano at the beginning goes together really well and helps set up the somber, and dare I say, gloomy mood of this piece. I like the choir-y voices that come in later too. Overall it comes together very well and makes a beautiful piece.

Given the heavy mood, it's not something I feel I can listen to all the time (it's raining here now so it's really meshing with me now) but once in a while? Oh yeses. People who dig ambiance should definitely check this one out.

  14. I loves me some Ys music. Particularly Feena's theme, one of my favorites from the first. <3

I can't really say anything that others haven't already said. The beginning is fabu. I love it. After that, it gets more safe and straight forward. That's not terrible or anything, but it would have been nice to at least have a hook at the end since the beginning had one. Throughout a lot of this song, the strings in the background didn't really feel like background to me. They were kinda loud and prominent, so they really took away from the main melody. And even though it's a short song, it has the feel of being a little repetitive in a spot or two. Not too much, but it's there.

Then it ends. Just like that. :\

In spite of my complaints, it still works overall. It's a pleasant little arrangement of an iconic Ys theme that deserves at least a chance.

  15. I've always liked this song from PS3. The title has always made me laugh... Generations of Doom. It just doesn't fit with the happy tune at all. XD

I find this piece to be mostly straightforward, without too much deviation going on, which would have been nice to hear. Overall, it's a pretty uplifting song and I enjoyed it. Though... I'd likely have enjoyed it more without the strings, or at least with a different sample. The very beginning with the strings is just... grating. I don't really have a problem with anything else but the strings though, as everything else is rather pleasant.

I can tell DJP has definitely improved since this so I'm willing to bet if he tackled this nowadays it'd be phenomenal. But PS3 arrangements are a rare treat, so this deserves a chance for sure.

  16. Wicked Child is probably my favorite old school Castlevania song. I mean, I like Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears and whatnot, but Wicked Child was just way too catchy.

To be honest, I'm not terribly impressed with the guitar in this song. Something about it just sounds... muffled to me? Muddied? Just something about it isn't very clean, and it doesn't stand out to me. It gets better about halfway in, but I'd have liked to have heard that throughout the entire song. The arrangement itself isn't too inspired either. Seems kind of straight forward to me.

It's not bad overall, and definitely worth checking out to at least give it a chance, but it's not my favorite rendition of Wicked Child.

  17. In a word? Epic.

As I've said before, I feel this is one of the strongest pieces on the FF4: EoBLoR album. The samples are excellent and don't sound overtly fake at all. It's also somewhat lengthy but it doesn't get repetitive or drag on. It switches it up every now and then and *really* explores the Lunar Whale theme. If FF4 were ever made into an actual factual movie, I could easily see this being part of the score.

In songs like this, what really amazes me is there's parts where there's a lot going on, but it doesn't *sound* like there's a lot going on. It's not like it's always booming and powerful and emotional, but there's a lot of subtlety going on. A chime here, a note there, but it's not at all out of place and really adds to it even if you don't pick it up the first or second time you listen to the song.

I definitely recommend for everyone to check this one out.

  18. Reading the other reviews of this song made me want to review it even more. I actually liked CotMM's take on Cid's theme, and this is currently in my FF music folder. Granted that, no, this isn't what I feel is his best work, but I don't view it as his worst either. What I think is probably the most neat thing about it, is that you listen to the original and it's kind of this... uplifting, inspiring theme, and CotMM took that same song and just shifted the mood entirely. There's elements to it that are uplifting, imo, given the nature of this song, but overall it's more somber, I'd say.

There are some issues, of course. Like I do agree with what was said about the drums. For me, they don't really fit 100%. But I still think this is worth a listen and shouldn't be written off entirely for being an older piece from CotMM.

  19. Not only does someone cover Saga Frontier, a rather underrated game with underrated music, but they cover one of my favorite pieces from Saga Frontier... win!

I love the buildup throughout the entire song. Even that pause at the beginning, it just adds more to the mood of the piece. And it just keeps building up and building up until it sounds, dare I say, epic. The only problem is.. I start to really dig it and its epic-ness, particularly during those final thirty seconds, and then? It ends.

    ...really? :(

This could have had another minute at least tacked on it, easily. And imo, it *should* have had at least another minute tacked on. It just ended entirely too early and abruptly for me, without any real resolution to the ending. What's there is still pretty great though, and I definitely recommend people give it a chance.
