  4. The artist provided 2 alternate mixdowns based on Larry's feedback - I have linked them both above. For my money, the 2nd "alt" mix sounds more full, but either one is a pass. I would personally leave it to the artist's discretion which mixdown they would like to use. I can't get enough DS Castlevania action. Love these games so much. This mix is very solidly conceived, I'm digging the juxtaposition between the gothic-style bells and strings that have become a trademark of Castlevania soundtracks, and the grungy, distorted garage rock instrumentation. It's an unconventional blend on paper, but actually feels quite natural the way you executed it. The string sequencing was a highlight, it's actually pretty tricky to sequence orchestral lead instruments in with live instrumentation and still maintain the illusion of realism, but I think you struck a nice balance here. Nice work. (I liked this before and I like it still. Just going to copy/paste my vote from last time because it all still applies.) YES

It's far too dense for my taste, but perhaps it'll suit your needs.

Gorgeous textures and some really smooth performances - you don't get too terribly fancy with any of the changes to the original source, but your arrangement handles Rainbow Road's melodies very tactfully with a lot of enhancements on the chord progression and harmonies. I love this approach and the sound quality is great. With the exception of :59-1:05, where things get inexplicably cluttered and busy, the sound quality is hitting all the major points for me. However, the arrangement here is so short - we almost never post tracks that are under 2 minutes long and this, unfortunately, feels too short for us. Give us even another 30-60 seconds of arrangement and fix up the aforementioned clutter at :59, and this would be an easy pass in my book. The fadeout at the end feels lazy too, I'd love to hear a more definitive ending. Hope to hear this one again, what you have is quite lovely and I'd love to hear it expanded just a bit further to push it over our bar. NO (resubmit!)

The piece remains in a Jazz/Fusion style with some rock influences, keeping the melodies very loyal to the original while re-harmonizing its support! I also added some of the rhythmic textures found in the original Rainbow Road track from SNES's Mario Kart, mainly located near the beginning of the piece.   8. Cool ideas, some neat stuff on the sound design front but there's a few mixing issues that stand out. That 808 is out of control! After the 2 minute mark things start to get pretty repetitive. Since it is a companion piece of sorts). I wanted to keep them as dance tracks in a similar style but just add my own touch to them as a tribute. There is a mix of samples and unique sounds mostly made on synths.
  9. There's definitely a lot of merit here to the sound design and slow, deliberate progression, but I think Larry hit the nail on the head. By our site standards today, this doesn't really feel like a fully-realized concept. I need to hear something more in order to meet our bar for interpretation and development of the source tune. NO
  10. To whomever it may concern, I have covered the track "Unavoidable Battle" from the video game Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. Here is the file. Here is some information about the song itself: - Game - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 - Submission Title - Shadow Swarm - Original Song Title (from the game) - Unavoidable Battle - Original Composer - Shoji Meguro - Other comments: I've always wanted to combine the two things I love most: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and Persona. I have an entire YouTube channel dedicated to "turning up" the original arrangements. This cover was completely rebuilt and recorded from the ground up, using the original melody as a basis, as well as adding very low-tuned guitars and bass as well as thrash-metal style drumming. Also, while creating this cover, I wanted to be different from the original, so I came up with a very polyrhythmic breakdown and a half-timed breakdown outro, inspired by the Djent movement of Progressive Metal. This makes the arrangement more frantic and chaotic than the original, befitting as this song plays when the party cannot escape a battle. Since I felt like making another track for the album I did some random browsing of PS1 RPG tunes when I stumbled upon this beautiful piece by Miki Higashino. It instantly inspired me and just begged to be remixed. So I just started working on something, replacing the piano from the original with a guitar arpeggio and playing the leads on a flute VST doubled by a whistle. Next was the violin part which I added as a counter melody and a few hours after finding the song I had a decent WIP going. I passed the preview to Ivan, who said “hey, it’d be cool if you could get a flautist, I think I saw somebody on Youtube who could do it”. So I did some searching and found Lauren, who incidentally created her own take on “Reminiscence” not too long ago. She was happy to work together with me on this track for some great flute and whistle parts. Or as Lauren notes: "This is my first time participating on an OCRemix track and it's been a great experience. I really appreciated working with Jorrith, even when we kept running into the technical limitations of my instruments. I think it was a learning experience and a discovery process for both of us in the best possible way, and I'm really thrilled with how it turned out!" As fate would have it, in the related videos I found Joy’s vocal cover of “Reminiscence” and it was so good and moving that I immediately approached her if she would be so kind to re-record for me. Again, a very enthusiastic reply and another great performance. Or as Joy sums it up: "I was really thrilled when Jorrith reached out to me about this collaboration and I was honored to work with these amazingly talented musicians. It was a lot of fun to record and I'd love to be part of something like this sometime again.” At that point I basically felt that my remaining MIDI parts weren’t good enough anymore and that I needed more real instruments. I approached Trev, who also claimed a track for the album, for the violin and string parts, and XPRTNovice, who I worked with before, and again happy faces and very skilled and inspiring performances. Trev agrees: "I recorded my parts with an SM57 in my violin studio in Chapel Hill NC, where I teach and practice. The violin is of the 19th century and crafted in Mittenwald, Germany. I really love this track selection for its orchestration and beautiful harmony, and there one section where I overdubbed myself 16 times to emulate a string section. I'm happy I could contribute!" I really feel all these performances did the track a lot of good and you hardly notice the MIDI in the background anymore So in hindsight this track came together as a set of stumblings, happy accidents and collaborations with great artists that are very cool people to work with. And I think it shows in the end result. I really dig it and it wouldn’t have been nowhere as good with these talented performers. Was it worth all the hard work of coordinating, synchronising and playing producer? You bet!   15. The live band elements are super tight, as expected! Like the Golden Axe cover, this doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel when it comes to Ice Cap Zone mixes, but you've brought a lot of fresh ideas to the table. The lead and rhythm guitars were certainly a highlight but nobody in the band was slacking on this track. My only two nitpicks on this - the lead synth is somewhat quiet in the mix, and I wasn't a fan of that trance rhythm fill that repeated itself a few times throughout the mix. To be honest, I thought it cheapened an otherwise-awesome cover because of how generic it sounded. No biggie, others may enjoy it but that was a weak link here. Pretty easy YES for me. Comments: I often find myself figuring out melody lines from games during my guitar practice, and recently I managed to figure out this chilling little number. BIO HAZARD is a perfect mood-setter for Snatcher's introduction, in my opinion - ominous and mechanical. After recording a few test racks, I decided to go for an "acoustic jam in a hazy, quiet bar" kind of feel. It only really started coming together when I was about halfway through recording the guitar tracks, with the bass synths and drums laid down as finishing touches.   18. Very airy textures and atmosphere, this has a lot of promise on the soundscape side of things. Some very cool original accents, backing arpeggios, and harmonies are really interesting expansions on the original source to give it a more ambient tone. In that regard, I think this is a very enjoyable attempt. There are a couple of issues I'm picking up on this track that hinder it overall. 1:03 brings in some very unrealistically sequenced choir patches that do not fit naturally with the rest of the mix. Take a look at the decay/release on those samples and see what you can do to smooth them out and make them play more naturally. 1:06 also contains some very awkward sine pluck melodies that don't melodically fit with the rhythm of the track. The strings fit a lot better, even though the sample isn't realistic at all, the lo-fi string patch you're using has a very natural, brass-like attack/decay that works great. The rest of the patches sound great to me! On the arrangement side, there's something ultimately un-fulfilling about the dynamic curve here. I'm not implying that you NEED to bring in a beat to this song, but the transition at 2:01 really begs for some kind of increase in energy around that point, and you definitely hint at it with the transitions and minor auxiliary percussion. From that moment up until 2:58, even though you add on plenty of unique flourishes and ideas, the track feels like it stagnates because the dynamic curve stays relatively flat. Something to amp up the energy level (without compromising the chillout mood of the track) during that last section would really drive the track home IMO. Also, on repeat listens, I'm finding that the sine lead, although it sounds excellent, is leaned on too heavily with this arrangement. I'm not going to call this a case of copypasta, where you use the same sections without any variation, but the same melodies are repeated wholesale many times, so even though the track is evolving around it, the leads need some more substantial change-ups to keep from becoming stale. Very cool track with a couple of flaws that keep it from reaching its full potential, IMO. I'd love to see this again with a bit more freshness to the leadwork and overall dynamic curve, and some polishing on the choir and that awkward melody at 1:06 if you can. Good luck! NO (resubmit!)

I feel like this tune captures the feeling of flying for the first time very well, with its angular melody and modulations of key.   20. Very cool adaptation, there's a lot of cool stuff you can do when adapting a dubstep/electronic song to guitar, and it's really not something you hear often. My first impression was that this played very close to the structure of the source tune, which is true - I would have liked to hear you stray a bit further away from the exact structure of the original song, but there's plenty of original details in the way you adapted certain rhythms from the source to guitar, as well as some of the original lead work. I'd say this is plenty personalized on the arrangement/performance front and actually brings a lot of cool stuff to the table. With that in mind, this track is actually pretty far along, but there's a few things I'm hearing that are holding it back. The piano sample and supersaw patches you're using are very anemic and does not fit well with the soundscape. Compared to your guitar, those elements lack energy and realism. The drums are similarly low-quality, and possibly could work if they were produced better. However, right now they feel under-compressed and lack presence in the mix - the kick drum especially gets completely buried under the rest of the track when the rhythm guitars are playing. The overall mastering on this feels quiet to me - you could easily push this a few DB louder and have more impact. Right now, the guitar work is really cool and really adds a lot to the source without really deviating much from its structure, but all the auxiliary instrumentation needs some work and the overall mastering could use a second pass. So, long story short, I return with this current submission, an IDM remix of the Whiterun theme from ES:V Skyrim. Pretty calm tune, nice contrast between the smooth ep and bass, and the very crunch digital drums and synths. I remember loving this theme, because of its simple, quiet power. I remember wanting to caputre that feeling as much as possible. Otherwise, I honestly don't have much to say in the way of the creation process, it was written about 4 years ago. I was about 21.   24. Interesting choice to start off with bagpipes, but alright! I love this style and was really excited to hear how you chose to adapt it. In general, I think your adaptation works really well. There's plenty of personality throughout, great instrument selection... I'm actually really digging this. Does anyone feel like the bass and guitar that are panned far left/right are suffering from sloppy performance timing though? I'm having a hard time nailing it down, and it's not so egregious that I can definitely call it an issue, but for example, :18 just feels sloppy and cluttered to my ear. My gut's also telling me that the arrangement might be running a bit long and erring on the side of repetitive or aimless, like the components of the track were just stitched together without much thought to arrangement or flow. Anyone else want to chime in on those thoughts? ?
