Obtaining/Extracting vocals?
dannthr replied to Codename46's topic in Music Composition & Production
...assuming that the sampling and encoding was basically identical. -

well, it might be assuming you want to save it as a *.4 file, try not to use periods/decimal points in your file names. -

When you're selecting export--are you making sure to select the audio tracks you want mixed down? If you haven't, try that. -

Oh, my bad, I was just confused by your wording -
There's a new gaming expo in town? http://www.eforall.com/ People on another forum are calling it E4 and it seems like another industry attempt at creating something as exciting as E3 used to be without developer madness. I don't know, is anyone here planning on going to this?

MUSICIAN NEEDED: The Dawn of Chaos (Warcraft: Orcs and Humans)
dannthr replied to Vess's topic in General Discussion
I would love to help you guys out, but I'm concerned about rumblings on your forum about project death. I definitely feel comfortable with that Warcraft sound (Short cue) as I was pretty heavily influenced by it throughout my development as a gamer (Orc Sketch) as it was one of the first computer games I ever played and it was the first computer game I ever played over the modem (back then, you didn't connect to the internet, you called a friend's computer). Check out my (currently austere) site, shoot me an email, whatever: http://www.dannthr.com/ Cheers, -
I know, that one bugged the HELL out of me once when I was trying to listen to a track that hadn't loaded properly and I noticed their little analyzer gif going crazy and I was like--shit, is there something wrong with my sound??? That was the first time I noticed how goofy that thing was.

Could also be publicity. For example, I had no idea it was MORE than a tracker until I joined OCRemix. I just hadn't heard anything about it for the last 7 years that didn't have to do with making techno remixes Not that there's anything wrong with techno remixes EDIT: There is definitely an unfortunate symptom when it comes to valuing a product and its price. I remember reading an article about bargain game software and pricing models and how new AAA games CAN'T actually release under $30 because they'll actually sell fewer units. Consumers automatically associate value and price, which is really unfortunate. -
I'm not sure how WinAmp's spectral analyzer works, but you have to remember that frequencies scale logarithmically, so the top half of the aural spectrum is one octave. It's an octave that is rarely used by musical instruments save for bizarre overtones or detail noises like with cymbals or guitar picking, etc. Those frequencies are often times the first to go when encoding/compressing for distribution over the internet. I remember beta testing a music player software prog for DataPlay (now defunct) and telling the supervisor that the spectral analyzer should be logarithmically distributed to more accurately represent how it sounds--I don't think he listened to me.

Well, I'm not sure if it's fair to call them dumbasses, and they're not the ones clamoring about one sounding better than the other, they're not even the kinds of people who would make such an unspecific and uneducated statement. The people creating these benchmarks have a real investment in the answer because they are largely pro-audio system builders and users. Their clientele expect a learned and scientific response to these kinds of questions and as far as I'm concerned, their benchmark tests are a service to the audio community in general--they're putting time into these tests without agenda or affiliation. They just want a fair performance evaluation. With that said, it doesn't appear that FL is on the table for consideration, though they will likely release their findings and the benchmark method for anyone else to make their own tests. I'm not sure exactly why FL seems to have problems earning the respect of pro audio users. I personally don't have any issue with it, though, I don't use it because long, long ago when I was selecting my DAW of choice, FL was largely a tracker and I had no need for that functionality. Nonetheless, I don't really think it's fair to call them "dumbasses." They're doing a good thing, just like the KVR guy--testing to see how performance variations pan out. -

Actually, it looks like the guys at DAWBench are putting together some universal benchmark tests to test respectively Cubase, Reaper, SONAR, et al's audio engine and how it handles VSTs under stress conditions. Preliminarily speaking, there are some serious differences in performance. -

It should be known that tin foil hats are extremely fashionable. Also, features and workflow are what set these apart. I suppose this thread satisfies the simplified n00b question of which sounds better or rather which handles sound better, but not which one is going to satisfy someone's personal needs in the production process. They handle sound file processing with similar capabilities, but they are different programs with different features and workflows. And also, different bit depth performance capabilities: http://www.dawbench.com/blofelds-xp-v-vista.htm -
Radiohead's new album costs whatever you want
dannthr replied to dannthr's topic in General Discussion
The discbox is great for superfans--it feels more like what making money on art is supposed to be about: Merchandising. Artistic works for sale is almost a silly concept when you consider what art MEANS to the world has nothing to do with dollars--or at least, I don't think idealistically it should. But the discbox is like good merchandising. -
Radiohead's new album, IN RAINBOWS, is on preorder and when you check out (the download version), you type in your own price. You can pay as little or as much as you want. http://www.radiohead.com/ Seems like a radical approach to the fact that the industry's standby commercial model isn't really working anymore. People will take it for free anyway, why bother using force on them with silly DRM? Let the fans pay what they feel its worth. I don't know what it is about it, but I like it--it makes me want to pay like... 20 bucks or something for it.

The "who uses what" thread
dannthr replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Music Composition & Production
SONAR is what I use, I really like it. I've used Cakewalk sequencers for about 7 years now, and I'm stuck with their workflow. The big commercial packages, you'll find, do a lot of the same stuff, but with different workflows--it's worth downloading any trial versions they have to see what you like. -
Yeah, surround sound monitors don't necessarily utilize surround sound encoding either. I'm probably going to be looking at this: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Saffire/ It's a bit out of your price range, Roark, but it's got respectable mic pres and 8 outputs for 7.1 surround.

Cakewalk is a company, SONAR is one of their products. -
Do you need XLR inputs? Do you need mic pres? I think the M-Audio Delta 1010LT is carried by Newegg and offers 8 analog outs which you could set up for 7.1

The "who uses what" thread
dannthr replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Music Composition & Production
I might be wrong, but the biggest difference now, it seems to me, are the roots of the software--these packages were extremely different five years ago. If I'm not mistaken, I believe FL was mostly a tracker and loop based music creation tool back in the day, hence the Loops part of the name. I used it once, I didn't like it. MIDI sequencers and DA workstations just work differently--at this stage, though, I'd go with the ones that offer a workflow you can be compatible with and one which offers features you're likely to exploit. -

Man, that doesn't make any sense. SONAR's export is supposed to mix down just like track bounce. Which version are you using? Out of curiousity. -

dannthr replied to The Legendary Zoltan's topic in Music Composition & Production
What do you mean "unkown file type" Is it a *.wav file? Is it just not playing in winamp? Did you make sure it's 16bit? Many sound cards don't support 24 and 32bit audio files which Sonar defaults on the export menu. Also, make sure it's Broadast Wave -
Yeah, the 300 could do like... 8 tracks. It had a built in rhythm section which is either cool or not depending on how much control you have to have over your works.
-
I owned the PSR-300 through high school--it's a decent starter MIDI controller but it's nothing to write home about. My mom is now learning piano, I gave it to her while I work on a CME-UF8.

LAST CALL for NS_Kit 7 Commercial (Drumkits)

Too bad I don't order from Musicians Friend anymore--not since my last order had to go through my credit card's fraud dept for services NEVER rendered.
