  1. The thing that really pisses me off with Square's marketing with this game is that they keep talking about Lightning as if anyone cared about her. No, I didn't hate her or the cast of FF13 like some people (although I never bothered to beat the game once I got to Pulse), but she was never charismatic enough for me to care about what happened to her. Stop trying to pretend like we give a shit about Lightning Square-Enix.

It's hard to care about Lightning when the only reason she exists is to make people mistake her for Cloud.

The opening of XIII aped off of VII's opening so hard, it's like they wanted it to be the new VII. Except where at least they told you what the hell was going on (Ok so I'm this ex-SOLDIER guy going to SHINRA or something to help these tree-hugging eco-terrorists ok), they don't do any of that in XIII so you're just kind of wondering what the fuck is going on. And the director whose name I can't recall can't direct a game worth for shit and expects you to figure things out by reading a fucking menu.

And the battle system wasn't great either. It's picking the exact correct combinations at the correct time during a boss fight to avoid instant death. That's not role-playing. That's that game you play as a kid where you hold out your hands and try to pull them away before someone hits them.

This is XIII. Never gave a damn looking into XIII-2. But I can't imagine the vaunted "Lightning saga" getting any better.

  2. Thank you so much, zircon - it's good to hear from an industry veteran (if you will) as well.

I realize my current rates are a bit odd (Wacky Wally's Wacko Prices odd), but I was trying to figure out if having a base rate for a minimum, and then a per-minute rate above that would be the best way to go. Of course, your advice is very sound in that regard - sometimes I am not sure how much my own skills are worth. You can be sure it will be something I'd revise once this small project is finished.

All of your points are a great help to me and I really value your input.

  3. So I take one of those documents (right now the Producer/Composer Contract seems to be the most suitable - though it needs to be modified in terms of artist rights) and set up a contract that declares my right to the intellectual property of my music and that I reserve the right to promote said material, and that I am duly credited in the project...

How does the "signature" of such a contract work? Say the guy signs a fake name or something? It is the internet after all.

I am sorry for all the questions but I would like to proceed into this as safely as possible since money will (eventually) be changing hands.

  4. Someone has recently contacted me about paid work for his independent game. He has said his budget is small (as he is a one-man team) and that he is willing to pay. He showed me his demo and I feel confident enough to try and make something for him.

Here is the google-doc I've been making that details my offers:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/14sotetVaspIDpihPkrONxqFihV5kRwxc_IFG5J2ZPmI/edit

    Basically, two packages:

-A "chiptune" package (NES, SMS, Genesis, Arcade) of music/SFX at $150 <10 min of music, or $25 per minute for >10 min of music.

    -A "modern" package at $250 <10min, or $40 at >10min

Since he specifically sought me out after hearing my sega genesis tracks I have a feeling that is what he is wanting in this case as well.

So, I was wondering if more professional eyes can see my doc and give me recommendations before I send it off to my potential client?

  5. I think it's pretty hilarious all the faux outrage, myself.

I've been saying from the beginning: A fool and his money are soon parted.

People who donate have no one to blame for their disappointment aside from themselves. People getting mad at James Rolfe or hell, even Pavich have no real reason to. Pavich made it clear what he was trying to do, and people are funding that (whether I think it's worth it or not is besides the point). James' cameo probably got a few more people to donate, and he might feel liable, but it's not really worth getting worked up about.

  6. Well I'm attached to this topic, I may as well obligate my annual question:

Does anyone have any suggestions for full-length anime features or short OVA series of space/fantasy action series from 1986-1994? I have a weird sort of spiritual fetish for this particular brand of anime and the story behind why I must seek out as much as I can is pretty difficult to explain, but its a thing I must do before I die. :)

I'm looking for things kinda like Iria, Garaga, the Final Fantasy V OVA series, Toward the Terra, Project A-ko, etc. I have all those, I love them, and I must have more.

    Thank you!

a lot of what i listed last page would be good for you.

This is a bit lazy, but on another forum I go to we were talking about good 80s OVAs so some good recommendations cropped up.

Some good classic 80s ovas within.

  7. How about you watch some 80s-90s OVAs. 1 or 2 eps long, full of stylish hand-drawn animation, great character designs, and quick and to the point.

    Some recs:

NSFW violence (seriously this is if david cronenberg directed an anime)

A lot of these have over-the-top violence (in the case of Black Lion, humorously so). However I assume you want to watch an anime that will keep you entertained instead of slow-paced meandering bullshit, so these short quick bursts from anime's golden age should be good for what ails ya.
