  1. Sorry, the only reason I mentioned quantizing was because I like Reasons quantizing functionality. Mixcraft's quantize sucks so that's why I was emphasizing that. And I know it's specifically the library and effects that tax the system, but it's only during playback in the DAW so I can actually afford to mix in my current daw if I can record elsewhere. If I record else where I won't have to worry about playback when I use my 3rd party vsts. I was asking it in a weird way I realize, I apologize for that lol.
  2. My bad I don't think I'm explaining this properly. You'll have to forgive me I'm still new to audio recording and engineering My problems are during playback in other DAWs using libraries like Kontakt that take up a lot of memory on their own. I felt that using reason to record will give me the freedom to experiment and playback without having to worry about the program constantly crashing, a friend of mine told me he had like over 17 tracks playing in reason and had no problems. I apparently can't do that with my current setup. If I don't like some of the instruments in Reasons self contained library I'd just transfer that track to a DAW that would allow me to access my 3rd party vsts. Essentially I want the flexibility to not have lag/crash on my playback (which my friend told me reason is ] good at conserving memory compared to my current setup) and the flexibility to switch libraries if I really want to. Which I expect I might. I also like reason's block section recording function.
  3. Protools for mixing probably and whatever other DAW for switching tracks to my 3rd party instruments. My current DAW mixcraft can't support like more than 15 tracks without my CPU bringing down my entire system. With effects, probably I can only do like 7 10-12 if I'm lucky. So since reason is self-contained I'm assuming its a lot easier on the memory. I have Kontakt (and possible EastWest later this year) Vsts so I'd like to use them, but I guess I'll just be doing that post recording outside of reason. I'm aware that record/quantize isn't what makes reason special, but compared to other daws it is a lot easier on the memory and CPU right?
  4. Had a question, but rather than make a topic I'll use this. So I have reason anyway... I got it at no personal cost or whatever. Since reason takes up less memory than my current daw, and can quantize more freely, I'm thinking of using it for recording and transferring the midi to another daw to finish it. Is Reason decent for just recording, and will it take me a really long time of getting the hang of recording and quantizing within reason?
  5. Aren't prisons overcrowded anyways? I'm getting really tired of the Entertainment industry and its inability to adapt to new technology forms...
  6. I don't know how many of you will be able to even finish this article...But ignore it's major claim of a 'world order' I did. More or less take away that until people realize that there's more to gaming than what compaines, news outlets, ect... tell us that games maybe will never mature to their full potential.
  7. they have to come back unless we drastically alter the very nature of the interests that sought out this change
  8. But google collects all my information and watches what I do on the internet... it's annoying >_<
  9. Wait... we can vote? I thought the politicians were purchased, like someone goes to the store, buys them and installs them into office. Democracy is a commodity after all anyways, and money is free speech.
  10. God damn it, you know I'm tired of these arbitrary laws that give government and cooperations more power. I mean crap, I could see something like this making it casually easy for ISPs to just sell our information to Google if they haven't done so already. I am really tired of private interests meditating crap through government... And way to cut your nose of to spite your face congress. Next thing you know there'll be a bill proposing we lock up every single citizen until they prove themselves to be a productive citizen.
  11. He apparently needs to buy insurance for all the vehicles he is frequently forced to destroy when running.
  12. It's pissing me off that the opponents don't even acknolwedge that Cotex, random fashion and pharmaceutical, chemical-industrial, farming, christian orgs, and consumer product companies are supporting this crap. Again, really they're concerned with piracy? And then everyone has the audacity to slap job creator or job protecting on anything bill with big money. I'm tired of the phrases "job creator" and "job" being used rather arbitrary. Theoretically anything can create jobs, violence would produce a need for more cops and doctors, war more technology and people, prostitution could stimulate the economy by giving more women the power to buy their cotex and clothing rather than downloading it illegally apparently, I could go on ad nasium... so apparently we do or should live in a world where nothing is prohibited and everything is a commodity. Or, crap maybe we're already almost there. So remember guys beat up as many people as you can today. You'll be a job creator! Then you can get bills to support your interests too! (ps is it me or is society becoming more... totalitarian?)
  13. Question... I have reason because my dad just has it. Would it make sense to use reason for recording then move to the midi another daw for mixing and mastering, is that the best way to use reason?
  14. I've noticed that when I play by ear my remixes or attempts anyway, tend to be more conservative. Anyone else encounter that?
  15. Yeah I made the midi, I had really no intention of submitting to OCR the source is too short and there's not much I can do with it. Personally, I merely wanted to have an instrumental of this song. There exists no midi so I was considering after some work of submitting it to VGmusic.com My major reason for posting this here was to get feedback on the arrangement, I played the melody and bass by ear and I then composed the rest. I could have just had only a melody and bass in this song but were's the fun in that. The trumpet and bass are the melody and bass respectively, and I admit the velocities especially for the bass need to be reworked. But in terms of the instrumentation what specifically isn't working? I noticed I am having trouble panning, I'm trying to find a method of giving each sound it's space. In terms of mixing it isn't mixed, but I specifically wanted to see precisely how did people go about mixing brass. This is essentially my practice, I'm testing my composition and looking for mixing tips. I know I'm far off from OCR standards, I've posted on this board before I more than understand that I'm just looking for general feedback. I was asking if the song was obscure because I've not seen it anywhere... hell I barely found one video of it on youtube no where did I use that to justify my arrangement it was merely a question of curiosity
  16. I'm writing a apocalyptic future novel and so I've been trying to write a theme to either aid me or just assign to it if I ever make a movie... it's not done and yeah I'm trying to learn how to mix and compose so any feedback you have would be good
  17. I wanted to finish this before my break I really love this song as its from the first game I ever played and apparently no where on the internet is there so much as a cover , I put half of it down in my DAW and realized that I'm pretty much out of time... I hope to finish this later, it's a short cute little song and I only need like 15 seconds of recording, besides I always hated that last part of the song lol Source: Remastering: How's the composition, I added additional parts so I wanna see how well they match. Any tips for increasing this performance? I'm still learning how to mix (and yeah the tracks aren't mixed yet ) so any tips for mixing and improving the performance would be great
  18. This isn't specifically meant to be a help topic (but I do 2 questions), but out of curiosity what process do you use to decide what to remix and how to approach the song. Do you use existing midi or play by ear? Do you by hand plan all the transitions, wing it, or something in between? Though I've just started writing I had mostly just used midi to learn parts, but today I tried something different... well I had to, one of my favorite songs (from the first game I've ever owned) was never touched by anyone as far as I know. Though I played it by ear I had to slow parts of the song to get the best rhythm and note accuracy. Though I in no way know the time signature of the song nor anything else for that matter, are these things necessary to make a good remix? Is it bad to use a midi to more quickly familiarize yourself with a song? ...and other than those two questions how do you yourself remix?
  19. The best thing to do to pratice composing in a Daw is to do covers or remixes of songs that you know, that way you get familar with your equipment With regards to equipment you have a computer all you need is a DAW (digital audio workstation). If you own a mac, they should come with garageband right? if not there's a "freeware" windows equivalent called mixcraft. Mixcraft is literally plug and play, it's what I've been using, though to mix mp3s after 2 weeks you'll probably wanna buy it it's only $80 which is fairly cheap for DAWs, and honestly I don't know any free ones... er Fruity Loops and Reaper are rather cheap if I recall. The thing is of course when you get your feet wet and you're well grounded, you'll probably wanna move on to a better DAW, logic cubase, hell even pro tools if you're feeling confident. DAWs run Vsts or virtual instruments which are either synths (sounds very commonly found in modern/pop music) or sampled (actually recorded from an instrument that has a player). I'm bringing this up because you can actually buy libraries of virtual instruments, and a good DAW should be able to run ones outside of the program's initial library (mixcraft can, but fyi it can get laggy depending on your comp, more powerful DAWs have no problem usually). In addition to a DAW you'll probably want a midi keyboard/controler. If you're family has any electric pianos or keyboards they should plug up to your computer. If not, keyboards can be fairly cheap especially if you're just starting out. If you're really bold though you could just use a computer mouse and computer keyboard. It's best to look up some digital audio workstations and see which one looks good for you. In addition to those you might need some virtual instruments which there exist free ones but the really high quality ones are expensive
  20. no it was guitar, I was being vague cus I wanted to see if anyone wanted to offer voicing tips for other instruments that might have been hard to emulate with a keyboard. I got a book on midi composition hopefully it will start to address my concerns... add to that glissandos. Glisandos in general, but especially with piano/harp emulation (I can use the pitch bend for traditional string instruments right? and maybe trills for wind instruments
  21. is there any any plug in that can make midi notes appear "strummed" or in general does any have any midi voicing tips for someone using a midi keyboard?
  22. I know this is probably overwhelming for you so I'll try and keep this simple. If your brother plays piano I assume he's versed in reading music. If he favors composing (especially sheet music), you can get a notation software like printmusic or silibus. You cannot really create "sounds" with these software but you can create scores. There is a playback functionality but you cannot control the quality of the sound, it's usually standard midi so to get the full breadth of your music you'd need players or someone who can digitally compose. If your brother is into making "sounds" this is, quite literally actually making songs of whatever genre the the DAW will appeal to him. It's a lot of work making music digitally though and mastering one DAW does not give you the skills you need to work in another. Ask your brother this question, does he wanna actually make music, or just compose scores. There are DAWs that probably allow you to do both, but the best of each are usually kept separate. If he wants DAWs though he might need better computer hardware, unless he's going to use garageband or mixcraft or something. I know Reason is self-contained so it's easy on the memory, and FL allows you to maximize memory usage. At the very least though he will definitely need a keyboard that supports midi. That is either a keyboard that you can hook up to your computer. Or even better a keyboard midi controller, which is essentially a keyboard that on its own has no playback functionality of its own but on its surface has modules that control midi data. This is usually what most digital composers use to make music. You basically hook it to a computer and when you enter a program it plays the sounds based off of what you have loaded in that program.
  23. Anyone think the learning pack is a good buy? I already play piano but I can't sight read, has anyone of a similar skill level found it useful?
  24. It's likely that once you start recording a crap version, the "best version" will start to stabilize in your head. It happens for me at least lol, I just don't have the skills to produce it yet.
  25. Oooh I got owned... apparently I almost nearly got into an argument with someone who says that SOPA is vital >_< Yeah man the economy can't function without it man, why aren't you guys supporting it
