finished Woah! My FFX track's getting Direct Posted! Or not...
Xarnax42 replied to Gario's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I just blasted this on my speakers in my room in the barracks, and everyone in the hall came by to check out what it was. Pretty sure they loved it! -

It's so CRUNCHY! Also, "Love the Dance" has replaced Daft Punk's spot as my ringtone. -
OCR02212 - Final Fantasy VI "Forever, Young Rachel"
Xarnax42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I really wish Poolside had been around for longer, because it is such a distinct sound, I love that sound, and their library is still too small. Shine Tonight, recently discovered, is now my morning alarm and gets a few more listens almost every day, and I was crazy-stoked to see this on the front page. After a couple listens...it's good, but not up to the high bar they've set for themselves with previous work. The write-up sums up production issues. The arrangement seems rather empty at times, and a bit repetitive. Sounds like the vocals were brought way up front, but that might just be because there's not always a lot under them. However, the vocals are phenomenal. Josh's style is one of the reasons I was so excited to listen, and Melinda's pipes impressed me. Her tone and interpretation continue to get better with each release. Harmonies are pure, lyrics are genuine (if a little sappy). Oh, and you can't go wrong with the source. Glad they played it conservative on this one. -
No love for Dragon Warrior/Quest? For shame... Seriously, 2 and 3 were a legitimate sequel/prequel duo that added TONS of new elements. DQ IV may not be a sequel story-wise, but built on the same gameplay elements and told a story better than any RPG before it. Also, Super Mario Kart 64 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Super Bomberman Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Worms: Armageddon

Thanks for that. Makes sense, and I can't claim I'd do things any differently. As far as the compos go, the various stages (announcement, deadline, voting opening and closing) each draw interest from a different cross-section of people. For all the other great stuff the site has to offer, it can become tedious for the casual user to browse the compos to find out if they're in the stage that appeals to them. I guess this one's for the mods, then: say there was a thread titled "PRC: Vote for your Favorite Remix" that got bumped every time voting opened (instead of starting a thread for each individual PRC). Do you think that would be helpful, or is that exactly the thing that lead to the move in the first place?

I was poking around the competition forum the other day, and this thread brings up a good point: what's the best way to promote and streamline these competitions to maximize participation? Something like this kinda speaks for itself.I've been lurking the site for a couple years now, and I think I'm approaching a point where I finally have the resources (especially time) to start working on something to contribute. It seems like the compos are a great way to challenge myself and learn, but they would definitely be better if competition and feedback increased. Anyone have any thoughts on what works and what doesn't to give these things a little more life? (If you haven't been checking them out here's what you're missing - nice work, Gario!)

3DS: Friend Codes on First Page, OMG THE THIRD DIMENSION
Xarnax42 replied to The Damned's topic in General Discussion
I think some of us are kind of missing the point here. That article basically says the 3D effect will be relegated to a gimmick. The fact that it's not "All 3D, All the Time" isn't the issue. But this seems to suggest they want all games to be fully playable in 2D. The 3D seems like such a unique opportunity for developers to get creative and devise fresh puzzles and environments, and this pretty much kills that idea. At least, it would if everyone were on the same page on it. Somehow, I'm not really worried about it. ...unless I'm one of the people who can't see the 3D -
I saw this last night because of this thread. It didn't disappoint. Darkesword summed up the strengths well in the first post. I loved the story, the characters, and the visual. I don't know how many times I mouthed "Wow" in awe of the animation. The music wasn't quite catchy enough for me to be singing it the next day, but while I was watching, it was fantastic. Thanks muchly for the recommendation. As for my favorite moment: easily, the shot of her parents preparing to release the lanterns. The depth and number of emotions conveyed in those few seconds...

Appreciation of VG Music 5: Sad Theme
Xarnax42 replied to Capa Langley's topic in General Discussion
Another icon, . Mitsuda's ability to imbue emotional depth into strong, minimal melodies shines here. Of course, it also has the nostalgia factor going for it.Speaking of CT, and Sad Themes, this seems an appropriate place to point out something that gets me everytime I hear it. From the first time I heard Urza's Song of the Mountain, and every listen since, when I get to the third section, I swear I'm hearing Colette's Sad Theme. -
This had better be a promise of more to come... This is doubly exciting because VHD's arrangement of Locke's Theme is probably one of my 10 most listened-to mixes, and you led me right to your live rendition. Considering the level of performance of a piece NOT INTENDED to be performed live...you've all got chops. If we can hope that the quality of arrangement of this "Hylian Suite" matches the talent of the performers, then please don't keep us waiting for long!

Few things make me happier than a quality Dragon Warrior remix. When I first found the site, I was a bit surprised how few have been posted. I'm especially excited to see IV getting some love, as it's essentially the icon of my middle school years. Love the energy. The incorporation of the Wagon Wheel's March was great - it blends in seamlessly, and I had to take a second listen to catch the transition. It's also nice to see a different approach to Sugiyama's stuff. I'm a sucker for the orchestral interprations already posted, but some variety is definitely a good thing. Great start. Can't wait to see where this goes. (Also, can't wait to see what comes out of the album project!)

wip Legacy of the Wizard - Meyna's Level Theme
Xarnax42 replied to luhny's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
This just made an already good birthday even better! Digging the harmony with the main melody line (0:22-0:42) and the rhythm variations in the percussion, esp. 0:42-1:02. The original work is killer, and flows seamlessly into the source. I don't know much about arrangement or production (though I plan to learn and submit something to the site before too long), but for what it's worth, here's what I thought: A) 0:00-0:22 I totally get a Guns N' Roses vibe. This is a good thing. 0:22-0:42 Perfection. A lot going on here. The melody is clear, the harmony brings it out, and the rhythm and percussion are crisp and clear, but simple and subdued enough to let the source shine. C) 0:42-1:02 Here, the mid range/rhythm gets a little muddled. You may also want to throw a little variation on the rhythm in the hi-hat. After a couple listens, it really stood out as pretty static. 1:02-1:12 We hear this line a total of 5 times, and I didn't notice any difference between any of them. It's a short piece, so it may not be enough to get "repetitive", but some embellishment or small variations could go a long way. C) 1:12-1:32 ^ D) 1:32-1:35 The transitions from your original stuff to the source are seamless. Here, it seems a little forced. E) 1:35-2:05 This is brilliant. I love the nod to the source at 1:53. 2:06-2:26 ^ C) 2:26-2:47 ^ D) 2:47-2:55 The ending comes up really quick and, again, seems a tad forced to me. Overall, the one addition that I would love to see is a more minimal, slower section. Something to make it a little longer and break up what could be too much repetition of the "B" and "C" sections. Of course, this all touches on personal style and preference. I'd also be content to see this on the site as is. A really, really promising start, and I can't wait to hear the finished product. Till then, this version is definitely going on a couple playlists. Thanks so much! -
I've loved this game since I was a kid and always had the music in my head, even if I hadn't picked the game up in over 5 years. It would be incredible to hear what some of the minds here could do with this stuff. I think just about every track is ripe for ReMixing, but these ones are my favorites: Xemn's Level Theme: Meyna's Level Theme: Overworld Theme: Item Select Theme: Home Theme: (Notice the comment on this vid -- no that's not me.)Thanks for looking!
