OCR01202 - Zombies Ate My Neighbors "Neighburgers"
timaeus222 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a fun remix. After manually trimming the high frequencies just a tad, it's pretty sweet. =D EDIT: At 4:49, excuse my language, but I'm just like "WHAT THE FUCK. DAMN." -
Your favorite drum sample pack?
timaeus222 replied to timaeus222's topic in Music Composition & Production
Oh, good, someone did suggest Smoker's Delight. I was going to get that someday. I love using When Alien Drum Robots Attack (Vol. 2), Platinum Percussion, and MPC60 stuff, but this input is great for me and for anyone else looking for samples! Thanks! -

The bass is much better. 2:04 seems to have quite a bit of reverb. 2:10 has some brass that I can barely hear, which means everything is too loud right now. -

I really love that last lead! Loved it all the way through. -

The drums are a little quiet in comparison to everything else, the snare and kick in particular. See if you can find a better bass at 0:09. That sounds kind of like a vocaloid bass of some sort. Maybe an FM bass might work better. Can you try EQing out the frequencies you don't need in certain instruments? Try thinking about what instruments for which you want certain characteristics to come through, and EQ it so that everything other than those characteristics is not very audible, and that can leave room for other instruments in those frequencies. It's less reverbed, but it still sounds muddy. Can you try to get some better stereo separation? Try widening some sounds or panning some sounds. It sounds like many of them are panned center or near center. Here's an example of some stereo separation. There are two different pads. One is panned center, one is wider. The wider one plays second and fourth. Notice how the bass is more controlled and more headroom is available? https://www.box.com/s/218eczoxl79gt2ysj6ii

I'm always looking for new and awesome drum samples. What's your favorite drum sample pack of all time, and what does it contain?

OCR02656 - Deus Ex "Human Soldier"
timaeus222 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm not sure I hear too much of the source in there, but I do hear it. The production's great, and the half-time section was a neat variation on typical halc mixes. -

So good, despite the loop-like feel of the D&B drums. Can't blame zircon---he probably was pressed for time writing this track, what with all the sample libraries he's been working on. Probably my favorite part is 3:28. =D -

Awesome, I love glitch songs like these, especially because I recognize a lot of these effects. Makes me want to get dBlue Glitch v2.0.2. I'm surprised the frequencies were so well-tamed. -

Sounds good so far. I personally feel like it's missing about 5% treble or so, because I can hear that the stuff above around 16000Hz is a little bit low. (And looking in my Param EQ, yeah, it does look like the song never reaches above 16240Hz. Not a huge issue, but I did notice it right away. Your overhead drums should reach past 16000 since they have the possibility of being high quality samples. You can also have more low end, perhaps, below 60-ish Hz. That's all I got. The clipping at the end is fixed. -

timaeus222 replied to musicsnob22's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The sounds are very generic/plain, without much textural development throughout. The writing is pretty simple, and the main lead is very grating to my ears, probably around 8000Hz. Abrupt ending so far, if it was a WIP. I personally would consider this far from done, but it's a start. Don't get discouraged though, keep trying. -
wip Blazblue: Gluttony Fang (Hazama's Theme)
timaeus222 replied to FaytxStay's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Well, now it looks like you have a good guitar tone. You'll need to bring out the bass presence some more though to make the combined sound more powerful. I can hear the bass when it's playing by itself, but when the bass and guitar are playing at the same time, either they're playing different notes or the bite from the bass isn't coming through. Now, the piano is more exposed sometimes, and it really sounds mechanical. You'll need to adjust the velocities to make it sound more natural and phrased. -

Geez Mokram, hope everything turns out alright with you! Dx GUNSTAR! -
I agree, the trumpet at 0:30 sounds extremely fake with all the grace notes. The bass is a little soft to me. I think I hear a really soft acoustic bass, but I can't hear the attack. The piano at 0:56 and 1:11 sounds really mechanical to me. The brass at 1:25 sounds synthesized. I could hear a little PWM. 1:38 and on is a loop... :/

timaeus222 replied to Necrox's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Well, right now, since you want me to be honest: Drums are spastic and don't fully connect with the flow of the song. They seem MIDI-ish rhythmically. Piano doesn't really fit with the distorted sound at 0:20 (synth guitar?). 0:35 has some odd filtering that doesn't flow either. I think the next step you can take is getting familiar with your DAW, practicing how you can imitate other people, and then using that knowledge to build your own pool of instruments for your own sound. -
wip Kingdom Hearts and Pokémon. Will It Blend?
timaeus222 replied to YuriTajento's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Anvil Studio is totally not practical for full-on music production. I think first, you should decide what DAW you would be best suited to, and get acquainted. Right now, the remix is too soft and plain. Less emphasis on percussion might not necessarily be good all the time, and you don't have to use the same instrument when sharing main melodies. -
wip Blazblue: Gluttony Fang (Hazama's Theme)
timaeus222 replied to FaytxStay's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The writing you have is implying heavy metal, but I'm not really hearing the low end power. I think you carved out the lows too much on the bass and guitar. For example, at 0:36 and 0:44, I hear something that sounds like this: https://soundcloud.com/isworks/shreddage-2-subterrenea-by-ian?in=isworks/sets/shreddage-2-demos at 1:13 -
wip Blazblue: Gluttony Fang (Hazama's Theme)
timaeus222 replied to FaytxStay's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The volume issue is minor. Just set it to 36 if 100 seems too loud and go from there. Other applications should be adjusted to have the same max volume as your overall volume, and do so manually if you have to in the Volume Mixer. I currently have a laptop that works at 36% volume just fine, and of course you could just open Audacity and look at the waveform. If it reaches something near 0dB, it's fine. Your remix is way too soft... by about 7-14dB. When I normalize it, I hear a dry piano, Shreddage 2 or some other lead guitar library, Shreddage Bass, slightly dry non-kick drum samples, but right now I can't really tell because since everything's so soft. Normalizing it makes it retain the same volume balance, so lots of things aren't loud enough to hear very well.
