  1. Hey man, thanks a lot! I'm glad you dug it, that means a lot. As far as source goes, here's where the Catfish is: There was a bit in the beginning, though it got buried (fine with me though, it was already a bit interpreted, and as you said, interp in simple chords makes it hard to distinguish). At 0:51, there's a chippy arp that kicks things off with the Catfish intro progression. I guess in the source this isn't really a progression, but 3 notes of the same chord arpeggiated over one chord FOR A LONG FUCKING TIME (one of the reasons I hate the source). So instead, I turned it into a progression, with a bar for each note instead of just 2 beats. Then filled out the chords how I saw fit, added suspensions etc. At 0:54 - 1:24, the chords are all Catfish; try checking my horns. The progression is dolled up a bit and a little longer, but it's still there (although the phrasing in the source is AABA, whereas in this it's just ABAB). You might've been listening to the arps or the piano harmony, which just play to the progression; there's no source there, just original frill to fill things out At 2:23, the same thing happens. The chords are in the horns, with the piano harmony over top, although this time it's harder to pick out (gets easier at 2:46) and uses the same progression all the way to about 3:23. And then, as you mentioned, at about 3:36 to the end is that Catfish arp part interpreted a bit The rest is either Sheldon or original; but that's a pretty good ~2:00 of Catfish. I apologize for not pointing it out sooner, I was just blitzed after that day. EDIT: OH, also, I'll be PMing you in a bit about *other business*, Jason
  2. Ummm wait what? Is anyone else just downloading Round 3 off of the link for Round 4? Or am I just... idk, stupid, crazy, etc. Got it to work, but had to copy the link address and change the 3 to a 4 EDIT: Awesome stuff Jason! Closing in on last minute of track: "Yeah that was pretty sweet! I'll just let this trail off an-ZOMFG!" Literally jumped while your track was playing on my headphones. Great mix dude DOUBLT EDIT: Also, while I'm here, I'd like to point out who did what in my track. I spent all week trying to come up with the main arrangement, with the first minute coming out on last Sunday and then getting stuck all week until Thursday night. FINALLY finished it, and shipped it off to Omni at about 6 AM Friday morning after an all-nighter, apparently forgetting the link in the process, and re-sending at about 7:30 PM on Friday after I got off work. I did all the main arrangement, the chippy stuff (including outtro drums), lots of the orchestration, piano, and a couple other things. Omni-Psyence did ALL the percussion and effects except for the chippy outtro drums, and a load of additional orchestration (all the upfront trumpets, horns, some strings, an additional orchestral ensemble). He absolutely nailed it, and I'm really happy with the resulting track. It was a ton of fun, and I'm really really grateful to him for working under such horrible time constraints because of me Wish I'd have come up with something earlier to do a better mixdown, but oh well. I love the track regardless Volt Catfish is hidden throughout in lots of chord progressions for the most part. If anyone needs a source breakdown, let me know, but I'm feeling lazy and tapped out at the moment, so I'm not gonna right away. Hope y'all enjoy! Good luck Jason!
  3. Gah, damn, I know how that goes though... Good thing the deadlines were pushed back, but I wish you'd have had more time to get the track to where you wanted it. And oh yes, I think you'll very much enjoy my track ;D This round will include... TWO of favorite musicians... Jason being one. And I'm not the other EDIT: Didn't have much time for a final mixdown either though, I was only able to spend about 30-40 minutes before I had to start rendering/uploading. Hopefully it doesn't sound TOO bad
  4. Oh. Great Scott. Jason, I hope you're ready for all this.... I'm not even sure that I am. Holy crap. You guys God I seriously can't wait to unleash this
  5. I'll see what I can do about UMVC3... I'm already fairly familiar with Akuma's theme since I had a version of it for the WWRR, and I'll see if I can fit any other themes in there too EDIT: Mmmmm, Galactus is looking pretty tasty DOUBLE: And Dormammu, and Super-Skrull, and Dr. Strange, and Sentinel, and...
  6. I tried not to like this, but it's impossible; AMAZING vox, KILLER arrangement, BEAUTIFUL production, GROSS beats (c wat i did thar?). All of my yes Also, I didn't try to not like this. That is just foolish
  7. God I hate Volt Catfish... I've never been so stressed out over a track in my life
  8. Just now listening to the pieces Theory of N - I have HUGE MM8 bias, but I actually don't mind the sound clips. Roll might've gotten a tad bit annoying, but for the most part not a big deal for me. Wish you'd've had a bit more time, your first two tracks have really grown on me a lot ProjectSpam - your style is always pretty unique. I wasn't a big fan of the first section, and the vocals are mixed pretty badly; it's really difficult to understand any of it. The transition was really jarring, but I enjoyed the soundscape of the second half quite a bit Hakstok - Pretty awesome guitar playing, really relaxing at first. Makes me kind of picture a space saloon with Jim Raynor or something. Source integration is really well done. Pretty solid, though not something I'm really familiar with, so I can't comment much on the mixdown etc. Sir_NutS - Damn dude, I want your synthesis secrets for dubstep stuffs (especially the screamy synth right before "I'll finish this!"). The extra noise at the beginning bugs me a bit, but it gets lost in the gritty synths pretty quickly (but appears again at the end, and could've been decrescendoed out without the abrupt cut). Loved the use of the MMX death sound clip. The Storm Owl progression behind all the stuff going on in the drops worked really well imo. Might've been my headphones, but there seemed to be a bit of mud throughout. Overall though, awesome work, and the source integration was great on this one too. Sweet tracks, albeit short ones. At least everyone was able to get something in though!
  9. YOU MEAN LAST ROUND'S WASN'T DIFFERENT ENOUGH FOR YOU?! Butt yeah, I've been meaning to branch out for a while. Finally had the opportunity, glad you guys are digging And Black Panther, that mix is groovy as HELL! You gotta send me it when it gets polished man. Nice interp on Sheldon too, didn't even pick it out at first
  10. First off, welcome aboard!! Secondly, yesssssss Stone Man! I fucking LOVE the Mega Man 5 OST (Charge Man was my boy in a competition here a year ago). Awesome, full-sounding chiptune soundscape. Tasteful drum incorporation, and nice cuts (the end was a bit much for my taste though). This is pretty different from what the OCR judges are looking for if you want to submit something to be posted by the site, though still insanely fun just to share with the community. This is a great place to get feedback and hone your craft. Kind of in a rush at the moment, but hopefully if you need more info about the community, someone will be able to give a more in-depth explanation (though in regards to this post specifically, nothing is out of place or weird or any of that, if you were concerned about it) Nice first post, keep em coming pH
  11. I've been feeling like I need to change pace a little and branch out... glad you dig it It's fun learning new styles and tricks. I've got at least a couple new things to draw from since I've written these last two tracks for the compo. I'm glad to have the opportunity
  12. A lot of bands do repeat performances when they put a lot of work into a certain show, they may be playing again. You could always check if you know any marchers
  13. Ah, maybe he did; if so, he's got a ridiculous ability to sing different styles. Thought it sounded similar. Apologies
  14. LOL Covenant did you use the same vocal samples that Star Salzman did in one of his mixes?! EDIT: Seems that the FFT soundtrack has influenced me more than a little, now that I gave my track a few hour break in between listens. Also, source breakdown- 0:00 to 0:21 - Interp on a PSO source progression 0:22 to 0:52 - Interp on Blast Hornet (intro arps + melody A) 0:52 to 1:13 - Sheldon melody B, lightly interpreted (appears at :31 in the source) 1:13 to 1:33 - Back to Hornet melody A 1:30 to 1:45 - Interp on a different PSO source, with a Hornet quote at 1:42 1:45 to 1:56 - Sheldon intro arps 1:56 to 2:17 - PSO source 2 melody, WHICH (for the first segment) IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS SHIELD SHELDON'S INTRO ARPS ZOMFG!!!!!!!111!!!!1 I even added an extra note dip to help identify it during the second phrase. This was a huge chub-generator for me, because the sources that I was using as style inspiration actually ended up fitting absolutely perfectly with the Mega Man sources. I'm just sorry/disappointed that I biffed some of the arrangement around it in my haste 2:17 to 2:48 - Segment focusing on progression to propel the piece forward, which utilized some Hornet quotes in a low sine not meant to be accentuated (though I did bury them a bit far without realizing it till now) 2:48 to 2:59 - Hornet melody B utilized in the strings with additional harmonies in the sine and a Blast Hornet bass part in the 4th bar of certain segments 3:11 to End - conglomeration of Sheldon arps (high sine) with Hornet quotes/additional harmonies sprinkled in (lower sine) and that same bass part from the BH source (accented at 3:28 )
  15. I WILL PLAY WIT U NATHAN You can even be god and not exist. It'll be fun!
  16. Just in case anyone is as big of a marching band geek as I am (I play on the drumline at KU for those of you unaware). Ohio State did a marching show with a video game theme, and it's pretty damn awesome.
  17. Poop, problems uploading, I'll get it sent as soon as I can! It's not everything I wanted it to be, but what can you do when you write 2:30 of music in 3 hours... Still has loads of potential, I'm planning on polishing this one too
  18. Likewise. Bring it man! EDIT: zomfg giant epiphany more glorious source whoring
  19. Sorry guys, it's been a busy week and... lol jk Kind of. I got up at 2 AM on Friday to work on the track, it started coming along reeeaall nice. Then I had to work for 5 hours, then I had a 3.5 hour rehearsal, then I got called into my other job to work ANOTHER 5 hours (ending at 12, then driving me and another drumliner back to L-Town an hour away), then I had to be up at 4 AM to board a bus to Manhattan for the KU/K-State game, then I had to PLAY the KU/K-State game, then I went to bed around 7 PM yesterday intending to be up and at em by 3 AM today, and slept through my alarms till 8. The good news is, I'm fired up and killing the second half of my tune. HOPEfully I'll be able to do everything with it that I want to. It's looking good, just saying it'll be rushed, so I'm getting a preemptive apology in if there's any lack of quality on my end, but there shouldn't be EDIT: Oh, and I have to drive that same drumline buddy back to Overland Park (an hour away) for work somewhere between now and the deadline. Wish me luck!
  20. Great Scott! This is why Mazedude will always be a huge influence to me. I, too, love ethnic sequencing, and it doesn't get much better than this. Time to do some more learning through analysis. Amazing track
  21. Just getting started on my track, I haven't had much spare time to play video games lately, so I've jumped at the chance this week and have gotten engrossed in Final Fantasy Tactics (what an OST!). This one is going to be something a little different again, hope you guys are as pumped for the finished product as I am Actually I take that back, it's sort of a combination of different and honing a previous style. Lots of new synthesis and production techniques though... Bring it BP! EDIT: Also, the tabla and waterfones are my new love
  22. I'm not 100% that that's what you should be hoping for Already got a concept in mind for this round, hope you're bringin' it this week Panther!!
