Ah-haHA! I see what you did there Thanks dude! Ditto about the tracks this round and next (and absolutely you may, heh heh ) -
SNES Generation - Lords of Shadow
Phonetic Hero replied to RoeTaKa's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Dude, if that's your goal, you fucking NAILED it with Skyrim/SoE. SoE is DEFINITELY my favorite SNES instrumentation, and probably my favorite OST. The homages were amazing. Excellent work -
Hey, thanks a ton man!! I'm really proud of this one, I'm glad you dug it And it means a load that you think it's at least close to on par with the Metroid Prime OSTs, those are some of my favorite tunes
As for mixing sources together, you just gotta look for good transitions; use a bridge from one song here, melodies/countermelodies there, a bassline here and there... just look for pieces that would fit together well! To be honest, there wasn't a whole lot of calculation involved in that one; as I was playing Wolfang through in my mind, pieces of the Prime tunes would just drift in and out, and I realized how well they'd fit together. I'd be more than happy to help out with the process/arrangement if you ever want to tackle a remix with a bunch of sources!

Thanks man! I totally agree about the bass; I'll have to work with it some more before subbing. If glitching is ever something that you're looking at getting into but want a hand with, lemme know! OR, if you just want some glitch work without doing it yourself, lemme know! Also, I listened to the MMXCM OST a little more in-depth, and I got hellza inspiration after listening to one track in particular, so I started another Mega Man mix that could use a bit of feedback

wip MMX Command Mission - Ninetails (Drum n Bass)
Phonetic Hero posted a topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Hey y'all, got a bit of inspiration, looking for some feedback.. DnB has always been a tough genre for me to tackle for some reason. I've tried a couple times before, and it either didn't end up sounding like DnB should sound or I just said "fuck it" and gave up completely haha. I'm gonna finally try to tackle it, but I need some help!! Anything you got for me would be great. Thanks! It's still not like, standard DnB by any stretch, but it's *more* DnB than my other DnB attempts. DnB. Plus it's a little chippy, since I haven't done anything in that vein in a while. Whee! And godDAMNIT that stupid first note should NOT be filtered differently than the rest, but FL is deciding to be a chawch. Mix Source (Planning on adding in 2 others from MMX5, since they're in the same key already anyway, and both pretty damn awesome) Thanks again! pH EDIT: ...anyone else getting a "DaMonz" vibe? Where 'e at -
Glad you like it I'd be happy to give you a few pointers, glitching has really become a cornerstone of my style. I use Gross Beat (from Image-Line) for literally ALL of my glitching; I know there's dBlue Glitch that you could look into also, which is free, but I don't really like the interface and the way it operates. Gross Beat gives you a huge amount of freedom with how you want to mold the sound with that particular glitch pattern, and automating it is pretty easy. It's pretty weird to figure out at first, but once you know what's going on, it's easy to use and very conducive to creativity. BUT, I think it's still somewhere around $100. Feel free to PM me if you want more information or if you cook up a glitchy track and want a bit of feeback! EDIT: Never played MMX Command Mission or heard the soundtrack, but I'm listening now; wow, what a compliment!! The OST is freaking awesome. Thanks for some more inspiration!

Mega Man X: The Grand Maverick Remix Battle 2012
Phonetic Hero replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
I'll go ahead and breakdown some sources as well... I went the Covenant route, making my opponent's track the more obvious one and having mine play more of a supporting role. And yes, I did end up adding in more sources than just the 2. Couldn't help it! Oh well. At least I'm happy with the outcome. Anyway: 0:16 to 0:33 - Wolfang melody 1 0:42 to 0:59 - Sheldon intro arps A (slightly interpreted for darker feel) 0:59 to 1:15 - Wolfang melody 1 over Metroid Title progression (NOW WITH MORE TRITONES) 1:19 to 1:34 - Sheldon melody + Torvus Bog (Metroid Prime 2) arps, with more Wolfang melody 1 at the end of the phrase; subtle Sheldon intro arps B throughout 1:34 to 2:02 - Wolfang melody 2; Add harmony at 1:50 which morphs into Tallon Overworld 2 sine break (Metroid Prime) 2:02 to 2:31 - Sheldon arps and progression under Torvus Bog melody; at 2:16, add Metroid Prime Title melody 2:31 to 2:39 - Return of Sheldon melody + Torvus Bog w/ Wolfang tag; add Sheldon intro arps B at phrase end for build emphasis 2:39 to 3:08 - Return of Wolfang melody 2 with additional harmony and Sheldon intro arps 1; harmony again morphs to Tallon Overworld 2. The bassline is Sheldon arps 1 3:08 to 3:23 - Sheldon arps 1 in the bass again, with Sheldon arps 2 overtop 3:23 to End - Return to Wolfang melody 1 over Metroid Title progression; end with Sheldon melody snippet So yeah. Lots going on... if y'all wanna ream me for source usage, go for it, seriously!! I've made an arrangement that I'm really proud of, and if adding other sources or not treating the MMX ones the way you guys feel that I should have means my defeat in this competition, then that's the way it'll be. Just enjoy the track! Very much looking forward to listening to this week's batch -

Ben, a note from Davy Jones for you: UNLEASH THE KRAKEN Not sure when the whole "Oh hey it's 4 AM now FUCK YOU!!" thing happened, I think I hit a time rift or something. Finished my track, rendering and sendering. It's not up to where I want it to be, but I'll get it there before subbing... and I do intend to sub this one too, it's been insanely fun to write. I hope you all enjoy listening as much as I did arranging! -
Oh shit, completely blanked on this. What tracks do you still need? Looks like original Smash Bros. is off the table?

Phonetic Hero replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
HEY GUYS almost forgot to do this; made a thread in the workshop and posted a more polished version of Shell Bros, feel free to go gimme a few pointers before subbing time -
Track for the first round of the GMRB that I'm maybe/probably gonna submit, mainly posting here because I said I'd post a more polished version for anyone following the GMRB. But hey, if you've got comments or critiques, I'd love to hear them! Can't hurt to have it "too" polished, right? Not gonna hog the mods with this one, but if one of you stumbles across it and wants to give me some pointers, feel free It's glitchy, it's rife with aggressive synths, it's high energy, it's pH. Enjoy! Shell Bros

OCR01225 - Xenogears "Pillar of Salt"
Phonetic Hero replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Did somebody say Shpongle? This mix is insane. Love it -
Nope; I'm holding off until I can execute it better. I've been making improvements on my soundscaping and production, and I'm saving up to get the Evolve Mutations bundle. I'll revisit these tracks when I feel like I can do them the proper justice EDIT: Planning on starting an entirely NEW EP probably (hopefully) soon to try out some new techniques; hopefully this is the one that sticks, I've started and quit at least a couple EPs before because I've been improving too quickly for it to be an accurate representation of me as a composer/producer. I'm also saving/waiting for Christmas and my birthday (a couple weeks after Christmas) to get enough money for EWQL and possibly enough to buy parts so I can build my own desktop computer, since my poor laptop gets maxed out and starts fuzzing after about the first 30 seconds of material anymore In short, I HAVEN'T GIVEN UP! I just want to make sure it's top notch stuff by the time it's finished

Mega Man X: The Grand Maverick Remix Battle 2012
Phonetic Hero replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
Aw damn... I guess I'll probably end up doing two versions, one short one with as little of the other sources as I can do without completely screwing the arrangement, and another that'll be a lot longer as an OCR sub. I'll still post that one here, but my compo sub will be as much MMX as I can muster. I promise it'll still be hellza badass though -

Phonetic Hero replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
I'm getting started on my track at work; Darke, what are your feelings on adding in non-Mega Man sources? I keep getting pulled toward multiple non-game/compo sources to make a ridiculous remix with 4 or 5 sources, and I think I'm probably going to for an OCR sub, unless you have STRONG feelings against it. The MMX sources would still be the highlight of the mix, there's just so many different things that keep calling out to me while I write out these different melodies and progressions and arps. -
Mega Man X: The Grand Maverick Remix Battle 2012
Phonetic Hero replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS CRITS Amphibious (Hot Slice of Beast) - Love the smooth guitar, the progressions are badass, and the filtering is sweet. Feels pretty incomplete, but I wish you'd give it some more TLC and give this one some more meat dude, it's sounding awesome so far Ningle Buckor (Nightmare Machinus) - Cool. Good work fixing the strings up, I remember them being really rough in the first few renditions you showed me, they're blended really well. The snare sounds really crackly, what's that about? The hats seem a bit loud at times too. Other than that, the production is pretty good. The guitar lead doesn't feel balanced very well with the rest of the soundscape to me, it's too quiet and gets a little lost among all the heavy tails on all the bell stuff. Damn, that ensuing solo work is the tits. Love the crackly stuff in the intro and outtro, just not on the snare... All the solo work is wicked sweet though, the instrumentation/soundscape is damn cool, and we all know that everyone needs a little metal in their electronic once in a while. Nice mix from a #1 handsi boy! Gario (Race the Phoenix) - Seems quiet at first? Maybe it's just cause I'm at work surrounded by a sea of loud high schoolers being loud and dumb. Love the bass work in the intro though, not too distracting, just kind of like, low frequency hints on either side. Love the melodic work with Slash Beast. That freakin' lead is so cool, what is it?! PW square with a ton of reverb? Oh damn, chip solo is badass. PANNED PITCH SLIDES WHOOO. The integration of Blaze Heatnix is awesome. On a cursory listen, doesn't seem to be a whole lot of harmonic variation as far as progressions, but there's plenty of melodic work and other goodies going on Hakstok (Infrared Ultrasonic) - Cool pad in the intro, filtered guitar is cool too. CHUGS. Not where I expected it to go at all from the intro, but I'm not complaining. This is damn cool, you worked the parts into an epic rock anthem pretty well. The bass might be a little quiet. Oooh nice bridge at 1:43. Yep, these sources either just fit what you were going for, or else you executed it beautifully. Nice work dude Metal Man (Dephased Dissonance) - Whoa, thought we were going into some Metal Shark Player here for a second. Nice use of the Crawfish triplet motif for transitions. Orchestral hits come off a little cheesy, which isn't particularly good for the style of track you were going for. Transition to Flame Mammoth was a little jarring, I feel like you could've fiddled with the keys to make the integration gel a little more. Really cool drum work at 2:22, and I think well all know that I'm all about that. Some of the velocities with the snare don't quite work, take a look at 2:38; that quick snare ruff sounds like it's all at the same velocity, and doesn't sound realistic at all. Just something to look at for future reference, though I do really dig all the writing. Metal drums are fun Nice ending. Dug it aside from the medleyitis it suffers from pixelwave (Breaking the Ice) - Bass is a little abrasive in the highs, almost TOO dirty. I wish the square arp work would've been brought out a bit. Not sure the bass was the right choice as a melodic voice at 1:07, especially when it drops down to that low note; it's barely distinguishable. The whole mix seems really quiet, I was thinking that was just an intro technique, but it never got any louder :/ Your lead is pretty cool, but it's stuffed to like, the far corners of the soundscape. This one's got some cool sounds and ideas, but it wasn't executed all that well. I'd like to see you throw this one up in the WIP forum and see where you can take it, it's definitely got promise, just not nearly enough polish on there ProjectSpam (Dreamhorse) - Ah, this one's real harsh in the high-mids, especially that right panned piano (which is very odd in its own right (seewatididthar)). There's moments with some bad dissonance as well (the variety that just sounds sour as opposed to adding tonal complexity/leading to resolution and therefore driving a phrase). Same deal with pixelwave, cool ideas and promise, but the execution wasn't quite there. WIP forum, yes? SilvernixSP (MASS Production of Sharp Scissors) - The slightly out of time stuff leaning on the backside of the beat in the beginning is cool for adding an organic feeling, though variation would make it feel more human. I can dig the blacksmith-pounding-to-make-scissors idea though, cool stuff. Man, I'm not even sure this thing HAS a tonal center. Or maybe it just has 12 The minimal soundscape giving way to a more aggressive soundscape is a cool idea, but you completely covered up your snare and bass with other sounds. The cymbals and hats are super loud too. Work with the panning of your instruments as well as stereo separation to clear up the center of your mix. I'm gonna suggust the WIP forum again, I'm sure lots of people will be willing to help you improve this one quite a bit Theory of Nonexistence (Sting Chameleon takes a Bubble Bath) - Man, you guys need to work on your naming when you're mixing something with "bubble" in the name... I've seen like 4 different mixes over the past year about "So-and-So's Bubble Bath" or "Herpa-derp Takes a Bubble Bath" or "Phonetic Hero Needs to Take a Bath Because He's Stinking This Whole Goddamn Place Up." BUT ANYWAY, holy shit man. That SNES-y pad is wicked. The beat drop is badass. The instrumentation is awesome. Funky as hell, and all the chippy elements are hawt. Gotta love that chorus segment with the chippy lead and all the expansion on it. All kinds of musicality in this one, complex meter work, and awesome harmonies. This is awesome man Oh god, music box-y type twinklies? You know like, all of my weak points, huh? Man, 3:17, that 6/8 section is really facking awesome. Lawdy, keep doing all that meter fuckery. Definitely a super badass match up, awesome, awesome stuff from both of you!! Oathands Ruckus (Electric Storm) - That bass is really cool man. I feel like you need to build up those first :30 to like, absolutely ridiculous heights, and then dial it back for the storm eagle melody entrance, the fucking WAIL for that Spark Mandrill entrance at :41 with high energy, aggressive drums, and more high energy synths. This one's definitely got potential for mega badassery, you just need to fill it out some more, and switch out some of those guitar synths You did a really nice job of meshing the sources though, especially in that first segment. I want more though, and I know you can do it. Throw it in the snake pit - I mean the WIP forum - if you want to polish this one up further Trism (Reborn) - Sweet intro, holy crap. The laid back, half-time-y metal feel is cool, though I can barely hear what the guitars are doing; they're in dire need of some better producing. Cheesy Microsoft Sam clip doesn't really do it for me not much I can comment on for this one, because I can't really decipher what the hell is going on to be honest, haha. Synth outtro with Rosered's theme is interesting though Yami (Air Cooled Magma Flow) - Low passed intro is cool, but it just refuses to go anywhere. It feels like the whole thing is intro material; I kept expecting a drop. Although I did really like the progression of the segment at 1:51 with the lead and bass. But then it gets a little weird. Needs more polish and direction man! Zerothemaster (So Now Some Stuff is Happening) - Hmmm do I smell improvement? Whoa, not really sure what's going on at :55, but I'm pretty sure I like it. Not really recognizable source-wise, but still cool nonetheless. Ugh, that chip lead needs to not do that arp bend for every single long note, haha. It's cool in theory, just waaaaaayyyyy overused. Oh, hello dubstep. That section has potential to be really cool, but it's just too muddy to really hear what's going on. Oof, transition to some more Mijinion material around 2:53 was pretty rough. As well as the transition back into... Mijinion again? What the hell is happening?! Certainly an improvement from some of your other stuff though. Is it just me or is it really heavily laden with pops? Sire_NutSworth (Chill Penguin vs. Armored Armadillo) - Nice bass work in the intro. DAMN that fist lead is cool, but the accompanying stuff that happens right after is WAY too loud and muddies things up a lot. That drop is badass though with some cool synthwork to go with. Cymbals are a bit loud too. Some of the voice clip stuff seems a bit harsh too. Not sure I dig some of the dissonant notes in the solo section either. I'm still a sucker for that Chill Penguin space arp though. Needs a lot more spit and polish, but not bad. Would've liked to have heard all 16 mixes, but hey, I'll take what I can get Great remixes this round everyone!! -

Hang on man, that's fine; being sick is one thing, as I mentioned, but people taking up a spot and then just plain not subbing because they didn't care enough of whatever is annoying. Apologies, I'm just a competitive guy, and I don't want to ever advance on a technicality; I imagine it's pretty frustrating. Hope you're feeling better dude, all this defaulting stuff's kinda getting out of hand, let's just leave it be and discuss it at another time. Mid-compo isn't really the time for it, I think everyone knows we don't need any more drama surrounding these things -

Yeep. And obviously I understand when shit happens, but when people are just like "welp, I wasn't feeling it" or "I don't like what I wrote, I'm not going to submit" or "I've done too many video game remixes lately" it's just a big discredit to the people who actually DID bust their ass to get something done, not to mention whoever's coordinating -

Seriously. There should be some kind of penalty for dropping. No one cares because nothing happens, not even a verbal slap on the wrist anymore. Look, I don't have a whole lot of time either between two jobs, collegiate drumline (+ occasional drumline work), and a whole shitton of other composition work for school etc., but I'm still able to write SOMEthing and get it in Then again, I learned how to hack my sleep schedule. It's like that deal with the magic meter in Zelda 3 -
