  1. This mix needs a proper title if it passes. Dang, I like this! The low end is nice and beefy, but there are some instances where I think I hear overcompression, where the low impacts hit such as at 0:22 and 2:08 . Good use of game sfx. Some of the sounds are on the vanilla side, the main lead is pretty fun, but some of the backing and chords are a bit plain. The drums are underutilized I think, other than the kick, the rest of the drums are too quiet and dry and they don't have much impact, and the drum patterns are repetitive. The clap is very generic. I'm trying to imagine this with some interesting, varied, effected, wide-panned, phased, etc., toploop action happening. Source use is conservative but this is a really creative arrangement... until unfortunately after the middle breakdown, the track repeats absolutely verbatim. From the clap at 0:20-1:38, that section is copy-pasted again from 2:05-3:24. From 3:24-3:42 there is some nice interpretation/soloing going on briefly, but at 3:42 it's another retread of 1:20-1:37 until the end (granted, the lead there is a little different but the midi is identical), then it is just a cold stop with no real outro. Lately I've been a bit more understanding of copy pasta and I've even been doing this here and there in my own tunes, but in this case I feel like the copy-pasted sections are rather large and there are zero additions to the next iterations as they appear (other than the slightly altered lead right at the end). For me there needs to be some more personalization in the second half and after that bit of soloing before the "outro," and I'd love a proper outro while you're at it! I hope you'll address these issues (overcompression on the impacts, better drumming and mixing of drums, and arrangement repetition) and send this back because I love the concept! NO (resubmit, please)
  2. Hey I've never done this process before but I am a big fan of the site. My Artist name is Vector U Real name is Victor Yu The Game is Super Mario World for the SNES My remix is of the Overworld theme/Athletic theme This is a link to my song: Let me know what you think!
  3. The words "midi rip" caused me concern, but once this tune gets going I feel like the personalization is enough. The sequencing of all the instruments is generally stiff. The long whole bass notes aren't always supporting the other writing as well as they could. Quite a bit of this mix sounds pretty random to me, with lots of elements competing for lead position. I am not sure yet on this one. edit 6/8/16: Listening again. The other two Js have given some good advice, and I agree you should hit up our wip forum for further help with production. NO (resubmit)
  4. ReMixer name: Synapsii Real name: Victor Hu email address: Game: Golden Sun: The Lost Age Arrangement Title: "Alchemica" Source Title: "Walking Forward With Determination" (Overworld Theme #2) Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3vKQYX0bu0 Comments: I took a look at the MIDI rip of this piece to get a feel for the kinds of arpeggios and chord progressions being used (I don't have a good ear for that kind of stuff) and wrote a slow intro that would lead into the more "epic" feel of the source tune. I think the strong ending in particular is quite nice--hope you guys think so too! The main melody from the source is mixed between the flute and violin section. A secondary motif that I use throughout the piece can be heard in the flute at 0:34. The instruments used are, in order of appearance, piano/cello (0:00), violin (0:16), flute (0:30), oboe (1:01), french horn (1:10). The flute soundfont I used has a bit of extra scratchiness to it, but I liked that because it's a bit closer to the pan flute that's used in a lot of Golden Sun tracks. 0:00 - 1:04 original composition 1:04 - 1:11 varied source melody 1:11 - 1:19 source melody 1:19 - 1:34 source melody w/ varied chord progression 1:34 - 1:50 original composition using secondary motif 1:50 - 2:21 source melody 2:21 - 2:36 mostly original composition 2:36 - 3:07 mostly original composition, flute continues to play something similar to the source 3:07 - 3:16 quiet outro
  5. Nice blend of electronic and orchestral and metal! The piano in the intro, breakdown and outro is sequenced stiffly and could use some humanization, but it appears briefly all three times. The strings beginning at 0:44 also sound mechanical, especially noticeable at 0:55-1:06. The guitar performances are wonderful. The soundscape gets really dense starting at 1:30, the drums get almost overpowered from 1:30-2:00. I feel like the high-mids are hyped just a bit overall in the mix. I like this arrangement though and the source is easily identifiable. Good builds and drops. Aside from these crits which you can use for future mixes, this one works for me, very exciting and dark. YES

  7. I had not heard the first submission of this track, so I went ahead and dug it up. I agree that the midi performances were not up to snuff. This version however, is pure awesomeness. The mixing isn't perfect, the instruments could all use some eq treatment so they shine a little bit more, for example the bass is somewhat indistinct and lacks presence, and the leads sound a bit too forward in the soundscape. These are issues to work on for next time ok? YEEHAW
  8. previous decision Dear OCR Judges... Here's the Link to my "Resubmitted" Remix/Arrangement of the Mario Paint Theme Song: (my original submission was/is the same URL only the "-5" version) Contact Information: * My ReMixer name - dabedaab * My real name - Steve Snider * My email address - * My userid - 32663 Submission Information: * Name of game arranged - Mario Paint * Name of arrangement - Pickin Colors * Name of individual song arranged - Title Theme * Additional information about game: - Composers: - Hirokazu Tanaka, Ryoji Yoshitomi, Kazumi Totaka - System: - SNES - Link to the original soundtrack: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GdapZ1FZhI My comments about the ReMix: Earlier, I submitted a version of the same song and it was judged as "NO (Resubmit)". I agree with the feedback that was given. Don't know if you guys go back and look at your comments from an earlier judgement, but in a nutshell, the overwhelming consensus (along with other things) was that the Mandolin was too mechanical. So I took to heart all the feedback that was given me and have changed the submission accordingly. Here's what I did to improve the submission: * Eliminated the "Midized" version of the Mandolin (Melody) and replaced it with a live recording of myself playing Mandolin * Eliminated the "Midized" version of the Guitar (Melody/Harmony/Improv) and replaced it with a live recording of myself playing Guitar * Added some Reverb to the already live version of me playing Banjo (just seemed like it needed it) * Made the percussive touches of Mandolin/Fiddle chops slightly more dominant (especially in the second verse [banjo section]) My original reluctance to include live recordings was predominantly due to my fear of recording skills. Basically, I admittedly don't know much about recording. However, I'm fairly pleased with the quality of the recordings. My take on it is that any hit on recording quality was/is more than made up for by the better sound of live instuments. Hind sight being 20-20, I can now see that it sounds considerably better (I least I think so) in its "Live" rendering than in its "Midized" version. As I stated before: "I find the experience to be a 'Blast' and will consider this a "Positive Experience" no matter the outcome." I hope you enjoy! Thanks.. dabedaab (Steve Snider)
  9. Wow that first source has a weird time signature, it makes it tricky to compare the bassline in the source to your adaptation. I like yours so much better, the source time sig makes my brain hurt! I'm having the same issue with the string melody, I hear what you did and I like yours much better, but it's just a bit tricky to identify the source material. The boss battle melody is very easy to hear though. The low bass is just a bit too loud and slightly boomy. The drums get somewhat lost behind this big bass. The main lead could use some modulation or vibrato or filter movement to add interest over time, but it's a nice sound. I love all the little countermelodies you've got going on here. I can feel how this arrangement was difficult to put together, for a variety of reasons as you stated, but I really like it, it's always interesting. The guitars at the end aren't fooling anyone, but for synth guitar it all sounds very nice. The boss battle melody feels kind of shoehorned into the arrangement contour-wise, the melody writing could probably flow better, but it's working well enough. Overall, really nice track! YES
  10. This is a really dense mix, very full, yet things are all audible. Source is pretty conservative yet well personalized. I would prefer the track to have a breakdown at some point, and a break from the relentless chugs, but what's here works well. It's gud. YES
  11. I recognize the source quite well, having listened to Sir_Nuts' recent remix of this same theme quite a few times, and I can confirm the source is represented well here. That said, this mix is not working for me. Throughout much of the mix, you have a lot of organic instruments ALL playing busy parts at the same time, which ends up sounding very jumbled. The bass is acting all funky at the same time that you have the sax, piano, drums, synths, everything all playing busy, intricate parts simultaneously. Adding glitch on top of this jumble of writing only makes this situation worse. Ow, my brain. I love the approach here, but I recommend you revisit every instrument in the mix and decide which instrument should stand out above the rest in each section. Take it one section at a time, decide if it's a bass solo you want there, or a sax solo or whatever, and calm every other instrument down at that point, down to blocked-chord padding or simple supportive melody or something less busy to compliment whatever is the lead there. Then, adjust the volumes so the lead at any point is clearly the star. Listening again, I feel like the bass is the biggest offender. Change the writing in the busiest parts so the bass is more supportive of the busier elements, except for the bass-solo sections such as 0:14-0:27. NO
  12. remixer: Chimpazilla game arranged: Sonic Rush Adventure name of arrangement: 'Jeweled Scepter' theme arranged: Coral Cave - Act 1 I've always loved the Sonic Rush Adventure OST, and the Coral Cave theme in particular. I attempted a remix of this theme about three years ago, and it failed so hard. I still love this theme though, and now seemed like a good time to try again. I believe this attempt is significantly less sucky than my previous attempt. The portions of the source that I used most prominently are: 1. the bassline: The source's bass writing appears throughout the entire track with the exception of the breakdown and subsequent buildup into chorus #2. 2. the vocals: The source has a vocal of "na na na-na na na na na" which I made into a synth line which appears frequently in the mix. 3. the chorus: I've recreated the source's chorus twice, rather conservatively. 4. the intro motif: The source's intro motif fit perfectly into the breakdown. I changed it from major to minor. This motif appears two more times leading into the outro. I won't do a timestamped breakdown unless anyone requests one. After this remix was complete, I could not come up with a name for the track. Typically I think of a name for my mixes by at least the halfway point in the production, but not this time. I finally settled on 'Jeweled Scepter' after reading the game's Wiki page. I'm including the list of WillRock's name suggestions here though, because lolz. Super Minecart 64 Davy Jones Deadish Pet 007 - Scepter Loki's Scepter *Insert Sceptical Kraken Emote Here* Jewels and Vincent KRAKEN IN DA CAVE "I'll never cave in!" 13. This instrumentation gets my highest rating, WOW it's well done. The vocal comes in a touch loud for me, and while the singing is competent with good vibrato, there are spots that are flat. Even so, this cover is sensational. And wow Sir_Nuts, we are learning more about you each day YES
  14. Some sidechaining of the kick into the bass and the loud pads would reduce the overcompression issues quite a bit, as it stands now the mix sounds unnecessarily busy when everything is playing. Sidechaining will also give this mix more groove. The arrangement is indeed very creative! Some of the sfx work, and others not so much, like the treasure chest sfx at 0:27, it is completely off-timed with the tempo of the mix and just sounds sloppy. All the sfx are too loud and dry so they sound tacked on. I like what you did with the melodies a lot though, starting with a recognizable line and then moving into a solo, very slick! The breakdown is interesting but borders on cheesy. I think if the sfx have a touch of reverb or delay on them (don't overdo it though!) this section will be more believable. In the final passage, the overcompression is really evident, as is the lack of sidechaining, and that pad is much too loud (but it might be ok at this volume once you've sidechained the kick into it). Please fix this up and resubmit it, it's very cool! NO (resubmit)
  15. Ooooo this sounds nice right away. The toploop could be louder, all the drums could be louder and more present. The wubs could also be louder, you can definitely make them fill more space without needing to rely on the vocal sample, although the vocal is fine but a little repetitive. I hear no sidechaining which would make the mix groove better. The breakdown is pretty simple and empty, with not a lot of excitement to build back up to 3:10 which sounds too loud by contrast. The rhythm guitar sample sounds pretty good after the breakdown. I like the leads you've used. Source use seems to be plenty with great personalization. There are definitely aspects of the mixing that could be improved, but I think the positives outweigh the issues and I'm going with this one. YES

Undeadline is maybe an obscure gem, but a gem it is (it won the game of the year award in Japan in 1989 iirc). Fast forward to 2014, where I participated in the People’s Remix Competition and won with my “Enter the Illusion” track which found its way to OCR. Because I won I got to pick a track for the next round, and being the MSX home computer nostalgist that I am, I wanted this to be an MSX track. Spent quite a bit of time looking for a good MIDI, couldn’t find any and decided to convert my earlier abandoned attempt to MIDI. During that I got re-inspired by the track again and decided to work on a PRC bonus track myself. I didn’t want to go for another rock version, but felt like doing something electronic. In true Jorito-style I blended some unusual genres together again, my weird take on drum & bass and complextro in this case. The complextro bass part felt a bit empty, so I filled it with a vocal sample that I blatantly stole from Moby’s track “Go”. Moby probably doesn’t care because he stole it too. After that I basically sat on it for a year to get some feedback and do some last polishing and I’m satisfied enough with it now to declare it “done”. So here it is, I hope the world is ready to enjoy some more classic MSX game music. More to come! Cheers, Jorrith
  17. Very cool tune, I love the mixed time signatures! Very clean sounding mix!
  18. Hello again! This track was initially made to be used in a bachelor party that i threw for the groom, who involuntarily had to rap and sing along During the intro, a piano subtly plays the main notes from Super Smash Bros Wii U theme, and the finishing sample in the outtro is from Nintendo 64’s Ocarina of Time. 19. This is very pretty! The lead acoustic guitar is a bit low-heavy. I'm not a fan of hard panning so I wish the backing guitar wasn't so far right, especially in the intro when the soundscape is fairly empty. When the piano starts on the left it doesn't quite balance things for me, but this is my opinion and other Js may feel differently. At 1:00 when the sitar comes in, the sitar doesn't carry the lead writing as well as it could and it's drowning in reverb. The violin sounds quite nice when it comes in. When the guitar lead returns at 3:01, the guitar and violin are competing for attention as the lead, and the guitar again has too much lows. At 3:29, the transition writing is quite awkward, oof. The ending feels rushed. The arrangement is extremely conservative. The vibe of the remix is the same although the sampled instruments sound much better than the source. I layered the remix and source together, and it seems to be a direct midi-rip up until 1:00, with the remix being pitched up 4 semitones from the source. After 1:00 the structure of the remix is different, but not by terribly much, as the writing is still the same as the source but stretched out into a longer arrangement. I think the remix does enough to set it apart from the original, but I remain concerned about the conservative nature of this arrangement. I'd like to see some other opinions on this arrangement before I vote. I will likely vote yes on this mix even with my production crits, but I need to think a bit more about this arrangement and see some other opinions.
  20. ReMixer - RoeTaKa Name - Alex Roe Email - UserID - 9374 Games Arranged - Terranigma Arrangement Name - Home Songs Arranged - Crysta (Town) Comments: Terranigma turned 20 on October 20th 2015 and I thought it would be a great time to return to one of my favourite games and song from a game. For a number of years now I actually had ideas of making an entire arrangement album of Terranigma on my own, but I think it would probably go beneath people's radar. So for now this single remix will have to do. I've already remixed this song twice and they were both rejected (and rightly so! Haha). The first time, 11 years ago I had been writing music for about 6 months and thought I was really cool with soundfonts at the time. I remember sending Darkesword a PM about the remix, I can't actually remember what he said haha. The second time, about 6 months after the prior remix, I had my first proper VST - SampleTank 2. At this point I thought I was for sure making an amazing remix! Again it wasn't, plagued with dissonance it was sure to fail. I saw the judges comments and Shnabubula was quite thorough with his analysis, I decided to message him on AIM and we still talk today so I am thankful I made that remix. Coming back to this song reminds me of my time over the years writing music and the bonds that formed from it. If I were an old man this song would trigger so many memories. If I had amnesia it might save me! I wanted to just do a really pleasing arrangement of this song that pays homage to the original but deviates here and there just so the song can be enjoyed more. I think that's very much what mv did with his remix of this song, his is pretty much the definitive Crysta remix and one of my favourite remixes of all time...so I can only hope mine can be enjoyed as much as his.
  21. Right away the sampled guitar sounds very mechanically sequenced. The arrangement sounds very much like the original, too close to meet our standards. This is almost a midi-rip from what I hear, but I do hear some original soloing near the end, that's a step in the right direction. You'll need to add some more personalization to the track, add more melody personalization, alter the chord progression somewhere in the track, change up the drum groove or vary the instrumentation or find other ways to set it further apart from the original (while still keeping it recognizable). As for production, every instrument is competing for frequency space so the soundscape sounds muddy. The drums are weak and quiet and the drum groove is repetitive. Synth timbres are dry and lifeless. I recommend you post your track into our wip forums where you will get further advice on how to improve this. NO

Contact Information ReMixer name: Wave Beam Real name: Timo Holopainen Email address: Forum userid: 33003 Submission Information Name of game(s) arranged: Thunder Force III Name of arrangement: Phoenix Fire Name of individual song(s) arranged: Venus Fire Additional information about game: - System: Arcade, SNES (renamed as Thunder Spirits), Sega Genenis - Composers: Toshiharu Yamanishi, Tomomi Ootani, Naosuke Arai Link to the original soundtrack: Comments This is the first arrangement I'm submitting to OverClocked ReMix. I've made a couple of arrangements before, but this is one of the better ones that's decent enough. I tried to keep the overall sound as close as the original. The first versions of this song had multiple guitar and synth tracks, but I decided to reduce them to a single guitar and two synths to complement each other. I think the result is simpler but more effective. Thunder Force games are highly rated shoot 'em ups for good reasons, and the third is my favorite. I decided to create a remix of Venus Fire (Gorgon stage music) as it is one of the most famous and iconic song in the series. Plus the stage itself is just plain awesome with its blazing flames in the background.
  23. Sources are handled very conservatively but there's great personalization. The piano performance is great; as usual Sam's piano playing blows me away. The piano sounds really rich and full, but the violin sounds small, dry and alone in the center of the soundstage as well as frequently sounding flat. The "huh" vocals sound really out of place, dry, and tacked on. I'm curious to see other opinions on this track, but I'm feeling like the overall mixing is leaving me flat and the soundscape feels really empty. The ending is super abrupt. Not quite there for me. NO (resubmit)
  24. remixer: shnabubula Hey, this was done at the request of the composer for the game and a good friend the beautifully Norwegian Eirik Suhrke who actually just released a game that he both scored and helped develop called "Downwell" on steam and it's really cool. This is yet another collaboration with Mr. Gabe Terracciano who is now in his 20s which is crazy to think he hadn't entered his teens when I first started submitting to OCR. Anyway, it's a remix of the Title Screen and Death Match songs, here are youtube links to the sources: Also of relatively low importance, the "huuuhhhh!" shouts are gabe yelling into his violin mic to match the sample in the original.
  25. What the. Ok this is so cool, but I'll be honest, I've tried to evaluate this a couple of times and my head keeps exploding. I'm trying to check for source use, I think it's there. 0:37-0:48 motor-cycle (0:00-0:05 in source) 0:48-1:00 bah-bah (0:15-0:25 in source) 1:00-1:12 motor-cycle 1:12-1:33 harmonies (0:36-0:44 in source) 1:33-1:56 just jamming along (1:06-1:26 in source) 2:05-2:19 crazy bus Yep it's mostly all source other than the intro and the spoken stuff before Crazy Bus. How does one evaluate production on a purely vocal mix? Although I'd probably prefer to hear some actual drums in here along with the vocal layers, this is mixed pretty well for what's here. I have to go with this, it's so creative. YES
