OCR03105 - *YES* Mega Man 2 'The Locker Room'
Chimpazilla replied to Emunator's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a super fun little track. Plenty of source, tons of interesting details. I'm LOVING the 7/8 sections and the interplay with the regular 4/4 time signature parts. The sax playing is clean and competent. The synthy bits fit in very well with the organic instrumentation. It is clear how much fun went into creating this track. What's happening at 2:33, has a monster entered the room? Haha, cool! My only gripe here is that I think the mastering is weak. The track peaks at -3db at the loudest point. The track could have really benefited from some better mastering, a bit of stereo widening of backing elements, a bit more volume overall, that extra coat of polish would make this track darn-near perfect for me. Still, too cool to pass up. YES -
Ok so I just now got the title, "Motion Sickness." I'm super familiar with this source as my son plays Portal 2, but I can't even watch him play it because I also get motion sickness from it! Glad it isn't just me (and my advanced age... haha). That said, interesting track. I like how you've used the 8 note source as the bassline for a good part of the track. However I think the mix can be tightened up some. I don't think your snare timbre is working, maybe it's just me but I feel like it takes up too much space and it is mixed too loud/dry also. I'm finding it quite distracting. I don't find a lot of leadwork to grab onto for the first 1:11 of the track, the lead is very sparse during the first 1:11, just a blip here and there. I like the leadwork you've done from 1:11-1:26, that's the best part of the track for me, even though the melody there is a bit scattered and lacks contour. I sort of wish that original soloing idea went on for a little longer before the 8 note pattern becomes the lead. The section at 1:59-2:15 though, I'm not sure what's going on there and it feels like filler and overly random. Hhhm. In fact I feel like the leadwork from 1:59 all the way to the end is quite directionless. Ok so to summarize, I think that snare needs to be tamed, and some of the lead writing needs to make a bit more impact and a bit more sense melodically. Otherwise this is a cool idea for this source. It's a tricky source to remix for sure since it is so rigid. NO (resubmit)

This is one of those super-simple and sparse sources that are tricky to remix. I think generally you've handled it pretty well, weaving that core pattern into several distinct sections while keeping it cohesive. It is definitely a nice chill listen! I have a few gripes. The primary gripe is your sub bass. Often times with a bass patch, one note will play much louder than the others, typically it is an F or G. In your case it is your G. It hits WAY too loud at precisely 100Hz. You'll need to notch the sub bass narrowly at 100ish Hz and tame that loud note. That's the best way to do it I think, prior to any compression. Another gripe is I think the synth you're using for the main source pattern has just a touch too much in the low end, it comes close to being muddy with the bass. I'd suggest a slight eq cleanup on that timbre. In addition, I wonder if the track overall is overcompressed. There are sections like at 1:42 where the whole track goes lossy. You may want to dial back the master compression a bit. No need for a chillout track to hit -8db RMS. With these issues addressed, this track is a yes from me. NO (resubmit)
-
This track is br00tal. Arrangement is pretty darned conservative, almost too conservative, but I agree with Justin that there is just enough personalization. I agree with Justin also though, that this is overcompressed. It's relentless! Pulling back the limiter just a bit should help a lot. But right now it's a waveform sausage and everything is mashed together. I'm not a huge fan of the synth key sounds used here, maybe it's due to them being so loud in the mix from the overcompression. When I hear these keys, like at 0:41-0:48, they just seem too loud and also dry. I'm interested to hear this again after the overall compression issue is addressed. NO (resubmit)

*NO* Advance Wars 'Unearthly Invasion'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm completely revising my previous vote on this track. Originally I had thought it sounded so similar to the source that I thought it might be a midi-rip. Listening again, I don't think that at all, and can't imagine why I thought that. The arrangement does play it close to the source material, it's conservative for sure, but there are some very cool changes and additions. I like the rhythm guitars, the drums and groovy bassline, the saw lead and the theramin thingie. The lead is mixed a little bit loud and piercy but the writing is great. Lots of fun effects and unique sounds in the mix, it sounds groovy and also creepy. So my biggest gripe is the ending. As I said before, I realize it is intended to loop, but for a standalone track, the ending doesn't work at all. I might even accept a complete fadeout, but here it is just cut off cold. I'd love to get another version that at LEAST fades out completely, but I'd prefer some kind of resolution. If it passes as-is though, I'm ok with that. NO (resub with new ending) -
*NO* Kid Icarus 'Kid Icarus Orchestrated Suite'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
Twelve minutes, hoo boy. I haven't actually listened to the entire soundtrack as would be required to check the source use. This mix doesn't work for me regardless, for two primary reasons. One, the instrumentation is all way too dry. The sequencing isn't too bad, but the dryness is really distracting. The other issue I have is the dynamics of the track, there are loud sections but the majority of the track is playing at -18 to -12 db which is super quiet. There would need to be some better attention given to the mixing and mastering of this track to get it to be listenable, dynamics-wise. I feel like twelve minutes is quite a bit too long for what is offered here. I realize you are giving us a tour through a good portion of the OST here, but I'd venture that few people have the attention span to give twelve minutes to a piece like this. Shorter submissions are greatly appreciated. NO -
There are some super fun ideas here in this mix! I think it could work, but it does need some fine tuning. I love the glitching and gating, but it needs to be tightened up somewhat. You've got what sounds like a string pad that is gated very heavily and it sounds unnatural and awkward, most likely since the gating is so extreme and the timbre is mixed so loudly and upfront. The sample also sounds quite dry, and has too much in the midrange. Some eq treatment, a little reverb, lower volume and possibly a little lighter touch on the gating would make that idea fit into the mix much better. The drums are pretty much on autopilot and they don't do much once the groove is established, some more variation would really help a lot, as would a few sfx now and then. I have to get out my soapbox now. What you said below... "I've been trying, off and on, to get something accepted onto OverClocked Remix for the best part of a decade. Everything I've ever submitted has been smacked down for the admittedly excellent reason that it wasn't very good. So this, dear judges, is my final attempt - it is as good as I know how to make it, and I believe that I can do no better. If you find it to be sub-par, I shall hang up my remixing hat once and for all and move on to pastures and projects anew" ...is pretty passive aggressive. If your mixes aren't getting past our panel, honestly you need to be really looking into why. I'm sure you are getting some feedback from us if you've been submitting tracks. I can't find you registered on the site as "Spike Caravan," so I assume you have not availed yourself of our WIP forums, which would be a great place for you to get some feedback and help. Another idea I recommend strongly is to get a core group of friends who remix or produce that you can bounce wips off of, people who will tell you honestly what is wrong in your mix so that you can get things working right, as long as you have a thick enough skin to not get offended by people's critiques and suggestions. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO IMPROVE. I think this track could work. I hope you won't "hang up your remixing hat" but instead commit to getting this track working and posted. Please join our wip forums, interact with us, get this fixed up, resub it. NO (resubmit)

OCR03160 - *YES* Final Fantasy 2 'Grind My Crank'
Chimpazilla replied to Emunator's topic in Judges Decisions
This track is excellent as I'd expect from Joe, it's fun and completely unique like all his stuff is. But yeah there are some odd transitions such as the one at 1:42 where the entire track comes to a stop. There are a few sections where I feel 16 bars could have been shortened to 8 bars instead. Also I'm not sure what is going on starting at 2:19 but I really don't like that section, 2:19-2:57, that whole section just sounds like filler, it is purposely discordant but honestly I'm not a fan. All that said, this track still has all the awesomeness that is XPRTNovice. I love the sounds used, the organ, the clarinet and the drunken "singing" are all highlights. Much more positive than negative here, as per Larry's "seesaw of what works vs. what doesn't." The track works for me overall, it's a fun listen. YES -
I'm disappointed too! This is a really great two minute wip, it does feel like a wip because of the way it ends, it seems like the ideas just ran out at that point and you just rendered a wip of what you had so far. There is no ending. I really like the sound of this though, it's a conservative yet creative take on the source. Two minutes is just a tease, this could easily be twice as long with extra sections added, some super soft breakdown and then a really wild solo section would be fun before the outro. And it needs an outro. I hope you will expand this and resubmit it! While you're at it, I recommend a bit of an eq cleanup, primarily in the lead timbre, it has too much in the lows and is nearly competing with the bass. Just eq it so it doesn't do too much below 500-800ish Hz and it will sit better in the mix. NO (resubmit)

Comments It started out as a day dream of a possible Advance Wars game for the 3DS as I am a huge fan of all the games from Gameboy Advance to the Nintendo DS. Then it lead to a search for some remixes on the game-which I have sought, but there were none. So I decided to remix the most bad ass dude in the game STURM! I am a big fan of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin's soundtrack and the OST definitely had an influence on this remix. As I was working on this arrangement, I always had in mind what if Sturm was in Days of Ruin... or maybe was responsible of the back story of Days of Ruin. I also had old school alien sci fi films in mind and absolutely had to use that eerie Theremin sound... because his Army seemed very out of this world-perhaps maybe being an alien with alien technology. I had a lot of fun with this arrangement. I made it into a loop like all Advance Wars CO themes. There's a part where I went to town with african drums & timpani's, and went off the general rhythm-that's supposed to be the chaos that follows when he uses his CO Power "Meteor Strike."

Hello, I would like to submit my arrangement of the music from the original NES game, Kid Icarus. The title of this work is "Kid Icarus Orchestrated Suite." As the title suggests, this is a fully orchestrated version of the music found in Kid Icarus. I wanted to give each level and theme a chance to be heard as it could be if played by a live orchestra. I know the time is a bit longer than your typical submissions, but I think you will find it well worth the time given the attention to each melody. Here is the breakdown of the piece: 0:00-0:57 : Opening 0:57-2:22 : Level 1 2:22-4:48 : Level 2 4:48-6:10 : Dungeon 6:10-7:45 : Level 3 7:45-8:45 : Level 1 Reprise 10:48-end : Finale I have also attached the mp3 as well. I hope you and your listeners will enjoy listening to this classic NES game

In the original story, Laguna worked on a film, wich is the dream of his life. I’ve tried to describe different scenes of this film: comedy, action, romance… More than the Slide Show, this mix integrates briefly some major themes of the game. At 2’20, we hear the main action theme of ff8, with the rhythm of retaliation. The next part at 2’43 works like a canon, alternating themes of retaliation and love grow (in a sadder variation), adding some elements of Slide Show p2. At this part, pizz and harp reproduce respectively rhythmic parts of Slide Show p1 and retaliation in a really soft variation. The mix concludes by its main theme, in a higher key. The last harmony is a wink to the last notes of ff8’s ending theme. Enjoy Slide Show p2 : Slide Show p1: Stage is Set: Retaliation: Love Grow:

I am a huge fan of the Blue Bomber, if you need proof just look at my contributions to the Mega Man 9 project, Maverick Rising. This was a DoD entry I conceived of for MAGFest 9. The lyrics were inspired by a fanfiction series that I had read that novelized the original Mega Man series up to Mega Man 7. For those who don't want to read a 92,000 word fanfiction I can sum it up by basically saying that Mega Man is getting tired and fed up with Wily continually returning to the point where he almost breaks Azimov's First Law of Robotics. I wanted to capture the feelings I got from the characterization in the lyrics so I hope you feel it. As for the arrangement itself, neither source by itself was long enough for a good ReMix/Cover to me, as a stroke of luck though they were in the same key so I just used pieces of each to create a coherent song with the typical rock song structure. This song is really a vocal-piece, so hopefully I've gotten good enough in the past three years to make your ears happy... even if you haven't liked my voice in the past. Enjoy and thanks Lyrics: I make my climb, for the seventh time I hope that this is the last... A war consumes me, I wish I could break free From the role I've been cast. My body's shaking, sweat down my spine. Each time, every time I know that I will win... But he won't give up, so I'll keep on climbing...until one of us dies Repeating the same, nothing will change as I'm rusted by time... Chased by his guard I'm struck by metal shards Do they know that I feel pain? I know it seems I'm just a war-machine But I have more soul than you can claim Each guard is destroyed, the same as the last Each time every time I know that I will win But he won't give up, so I'll keep on climbing...until one of us dies Repeating the same, nothing will change as I'm rusted by time... This can't go on, it's kept up for too long. How is he still alive? These seven years, fueling fears... I can't do this forever... Kill the 8 again, but this time it's easy Their own guns pulled on them, and they crumble before me, and I... Regret the loss of life, but I know that its useless. I can no longer pretend I am human, but I... Always kept hope alive, and I try to force the smile But I am tired of this fight... Creator tell me I chose this path... But I didn't know then that I would be saying that He won't give up, so I'll keep on climbing...until one of us dies Repeating the same, nothing will change as I'm rusted by time... This can't go on, it's kept up for too long. How is he still alive? These seven years, fueling fears... I can't do this forever... Why did I choose this? Will I finally lose it, if it continues on? Give me the answer! Give me the answer, or let it be over! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Wily Stage 3: Dr. Wily Stage 4:

This is a REALLY bold concept! I'm not sure it's working. The first part is a little spasmodical and the vocal clips don't help, then it moves into a very mechanical sounding run through of the source. I clearly hear Fairy Fountain, but it sure feels odd like this. At 1:21 the crashes are way too loud. Then the beat totally changes and the guitar comes in. The guitar has a Santana feel and it's pretty nice, but I don't hear source in that part, 1:21-2:26. From 2:18-2:26 the crashes are again too loud and the other instruments are too loud too. After 2:27 it's back to the original salsa vibe, and I don't think the vocal clips are adding much at all. I'm glad this was fun for your friend's wedding! But I don't think it works for OCR. NO

I was the Best Man and part of my gift to my buddy and his wife (cheers Jared and Stephanie!) was a dedicated composition in the style of their own choosing. They said, "We'd like something like a salsa or a tango...something upbeat and fun that we can dance to." Stephanie is very closely tied to Argentinian culture and Jared is a lead programmer for a game company...hence, "The Great Salsa Fountain" was conceived. I wanted to write a piece that incorporated the flavors of salsa and tango but which also had just a bit of a tongue-in-cheek feel at times. I didn't actually decide on the Fountain track at first. One of the first things that Jared and I bonded over as kids was gaming. And since we both had SEGAs, I tried to find a track from Road Rash, Phantasy Star, Sonic, etc since the tie in was more personal. But, alas, after thinking about nothing but salsas and tangos for many days and playing through the OoT OST, Fountain just hit me. Done. (There is actually a tinge of Gerudo Valley in there as well, but that was more serendipitous than anything else and wasn't part of the original ReMix concept so I didn't include it up top.) The piece was arranged on piano and guitar first with a latter heavy shift toward the piano since it just "danced" better for the track. It is a blend of MIDI-controlled VSTs, synths, and acoustic instruments (guitars, some hand percs, FX). The big thing that I really wanted to put into this track was the Spanish crowd calls that are most often associated with the salsa genre. I tried of couple of things that just didn't work and then decided to give some game FX a try. Link and Navi's voices, though needing some moderate processing to make them fit, worked really well. Though really, how could I not use "Hey, Listen!" ? ... I didn't really want the voices to dominate at all; just act as a reminder of those crowd calls. This was just a ton of fun to make and I hope others enjoy it. Cheers! --------------------------------------

*NO* Mario Strikers Charged 'Ball of Steel'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
Oh my. Interesting and bold ideas here, mixing synth timbres and electronic drums with sampled brass. Unfortunately the brass is falling completely flat here with zero realism. It will take quite a bit of articulation layering to get those brass lines sounding anywhere near real, I'm afraid. It's a huge pain in the ass, I know. But what's here just isn't doing it. The drums are on autopilot and not very interesting. There are long stretches in this remix with whole notes one after the other, like 0:48-1:12, and 1:36-2:24 where there isn't much of interest going on. At 2:00 an arp pattern starts up that isn't mixed very well or this just isn't a good timbre. Sorry to come down so hard on this track but I think there's a ton more work needed to get it passable. Greetings, here's a good one I think, and the first mix I finished in 2014. Final Fantasy 2 album Source: Dead Music, Rebel Army Theme Dead Music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwLMPSeFqWc Rebel Army: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xV0E88C7ck ReMix: Brandon Strader, DetectiveTuesday, and Chernabogue Since Chernabogue originally made 2 attempts at the structure for this, I shall open up with his comments first: "This mix was first started a long time ago, when the FF2 project started recruiting in 2012. My first attempt to remix this track was a brutal metal mix. But later, Brandon suggested to change it, as it wouldn't fit the theme. So I wrote another arrangement, more acoustic/dramatic-oriented in a very short amount of time. Brandon decided to take ideas from both arrangements to create the final mix. I contributed by writing a short prayer in Latin and doing some background vocals. In the end, I really love the final mix, and am proud to be part of such a cool album. See you all in FF3...! " I am very appreciative to Chernabogue and the lot of work he put in. And I apologize to him for asking for more and more, an then ultimately changing the song completely. It was much more of a change than "Requiem for a Dying World" which was basically me slowing it down by 50% and switching between mellotrons and orchestral strings like a crazy person. Ultimately, I am hoping that this mix will strike you as much less divisive, as it is quite enjoyable. That's not to discredit the lot of work Chernabogue put into this of course, as the final structure is very much inspired by Chernabogue's structure of his second attempt. He originally wanted to end with FF1 Dead Music, but for this mix I chose to go with Rebel Army theme because it felt much more natural, and contextually it was PERFECT. And I like the fact that the album features Rebel Army as: solo piano, electronica, acoustic, metal, and... that thing BONKERS did... Very important motif. Chernabogue said his choir vocals were sort of church styled(?) so I tried to expand on that with a little reverb to really bring out the cathedral sound to them. I love it. I love that this is also the first overtly Christian mix I was able to make for the site with his help. I am calling this Rebellion because this song really expresses my feelings of what the album and the concept of "Rebellion" means to me. That's why it starts with "Dead Music" and ends with "Rebel Army". Though we may lose loved ones and randomly encounter many unfortunate events, in the end we must remain strong and have the resolve to carry on. Chernabogue's latin prayer is the ribbon that ties up the mix perfectly. Tuesday, aka DetectiveTuesday, aka Anton, brought a really incredible sax solo for the song. It's so much more complex and jazzy than I could have imagined, but I knew what the man was capable of after hearing him jam at MAGFest 12. When pressed for a statement, this is all he had to say: 'Brandon made me do it.'" Requiem Aeternam dona eis, Domine; Repræséntet eas in lucem sanctam; Et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen.

I'm not picking out much Sunken City here at all. There's a lot of original soloing that's cool but unrecognizable as Sunken City. In fact, this almost sounds more like a remix of the other source, the anime. Ok, proper source breakdown time. I hear Sunken City melody (five notes) at: 0:03-0:18 15 seconds 0:46-1:01 15 seconds 1:12-1:16 4 seconds 1:30-2:00 30 seconds 64 seconds of a 120 second track, or 53%. It squeaks by, but still feels more like the anime tune overall. On the production side, the lead is quite dry and piercy, needs some reverb. The drum groove is on autopilot. The production is not too bad but that lead is so dry. The song is super short and has an abrupt ending. This one isn't doing much for me, I'm afraid. NO

This was a first in trying a completely electronic, poppy, fore on the floor beat driven track. It was pretty fun to do and fun to listen to. I wasn't planning on submitting this at first, but I do feel like it's worth trying if anything. The acoustic intro and outro are lovely but the source connection is tenuous, it only seems to be chord progression. The transition at 0:57 into metal is a bit jarring, but then the source melody comes through clearly. I find the production of the acoustic and metal portions both quite good. I wish the transitions were a bit more transitiony. The source use here is "nebulous" indeed though. I'm concerned that I only hear chord progressions except for: 1:01-1:32 and 2:29-3:00. That's only 62 seconds of source melody. Ok, I'll do this properly: 0:04-1:01 chord progressions 57 seconds 1:01-1:32 source melody 31 seconds 1:32-2:29 seems to be original (awesome, but no source) 2:29-3:00 source melody 31 seconds 3:00-3:34 chord progressions 34 seconds If we count the intro and outro (chord progressions), we get 71% source. Without the intro and outro, only 29%. This is tough. Someone please correct me if there is source in that middle section that I'm not counting. Ok, listening again. I find the intro and outro too liberal, I have to really strain to connect it to source, in fact I really can't. If there could be some hints of melody in there, even a little bell timbre or something, that would do it. Otherwise this is good to go. Hopefully we can get just a bit more melody in the intro/outro, or even another source added in, or something. NO (resubmit)
