  1. Here's some more over-the-top gory fun: Riki-Oh: The Story Of Ricky/Lik Wong [1991] is a very violent Hong Kong action movie, and some scenes are ridiculously over-the-top! Like this one. And one.Black Sheep [2006] is a Shaun of the Dead-style horror comedy featuring, well, zombie sheep of course! The special effects are pretty good, too!
  2. Alright, here's a few more: The Monster Squad [1987]. A fun horror comedy featuring classic monsters like Count Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster and The Wolfman. If I had seen this when I was a kid, I'm sure this would've been one of my favorite movies! It has a nice 80's vibe and is highly recommended if you like movies like Gremlins and The Goonies. The same director (Fred Dekker) also created Night of the Creeps [1986], a fine tongue-in-cheek scifi/horror movie that deserved more credit than it received. I don't know if this qualifies as obscure, but The Man Who Would Be King [1975] is also highly recommended. This film is a well-made blend of action, adventure, drama and (quite dark) comedy. Do you like zombie movies? Do you like nazi movies? Well, how about a movie that features zombie nazis? Dead Snow/Død snø [2009] delivers just that. This movie takes a while to get going, but when the slaughter commences it really goes over the top and it's all the better because of that. Speaking of zombie movies, this may sound strange but I've always felt that Assault on Precinct 13 [1976] resembled a zombie movie, but with gang members instead of zombies. It's an atmospheric, suspenseful early John Carpenter film.
  3. Sleuth [1972] is a great mystery movie featuring stellar performances by Michael Caine and Sir Laurence Olivier. It's one of my favorite movies, but I don't think many people have seen this masterpiece. And if you like mystery/detective movies with all kinds of plot twists and turns, I also recommend Palmetto [1998]. Sure, the IMDb ratings are quite low, but I thought this movie was really entertaining. The Host/Gwoemul [2006] is an impressive Korean monster movie. What I like about this movie is that while there certainly are quite a few special effects-heavy scenes, there is also room for character development and quirky humorous situations. I have to go now, but I'll try to post a few more later.
  4. WARNING: The following picture is quite disturbing. THE HORROR....THE HORROR...
  5. I can't believe I forgot to mention this one in my previous post! Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap is my all-time favorite Sega Master System game. Hell, it might even be my favorite 8-bit game, period! And although the Master System's sound chip was pretty basic, I really liked the soundtrack from that special game. I love this tune. To me, it sounds adventurous but somehow also a little sad/melancholic. This is one of the tunes that made me fall in love with video game music.
  6. ESWAT (Megadrive/Genesis) had quite a nice soundtrack. I just LOVE the boss music! I hope someone will decide to remix this some day... ESWAT - Stage 1 ESWAT - Stage 4 ESWAT - Ending Gameboy platformer/rpg Gargoyle's Quest had some great music too. I especially liked the Overworld theme, but unfortunately I couldn't find the original version on Youtube. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, the Wii sequel to the Saturn classic, wasn't that well received, but the soundtrack featured some real gems. The European version of the mediocre Saturn game Shinobi X (aka Shinobi Legions) had a cool Yuzo Koshiro-esque soundtrack by Richard Jacques.
  7. That was great! The parts with the plastic bag and the whispering were amazing, and now I wish someone would make a horror story using this technique, with you, the listener, as the protagonist. Done right, I think this could be quite frightening (of course, you should close your eyes for maximum effect). Just imagine...You wake up in a strange room and hear all kinds of creepy noises around you. In the distance someone (or something) slowly walks towards you. You hear the floorboards creaking louder and louder as the entity moves closer. Suddenly, the floorboards stop creaking. Is it gone? You think you're safe, when all of a sudden you hear a distorted, evil whisper extremely close to you...
  8. Call Of Darkness: Madden's Family Party Hero Of Combat Is Left 4 Dead In The War Of Duty
  9. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I also frequently visit Eurogamer.net. Their reviews are pretty good.
  10. I use Gametab to check out all the recent headlines from a lot of gaming news sites. I mostly read Kotaku, Joystiq and Nintendolife. Occasionally I visit Destructoid and IGN, and I when I want to have a laugh I go to UK Resistance or read Something Awful's Video Game Article. For indie gaming news I visit Indiegames.com/blog and for retro gaming reviews I go to the Video Game Critic.
  11. Hi folks! I really enjoy listening to those uplifting 80's rock songs (you know, the kind of songs that were often used for training montages), especially when they feature some nice synthesizer sounds. Since a lot of music buffs frequent these messageboards, I decided to ask you guys if you know any songs/bands I should check out. Any suggestions? This is the kind of music I'm searching for (I've left out the obvious ones like Europe and Survivor): John Farnham - The Quiet Ones You Gotta Watch John Farnham - Nothin's Gonna Stand In Our Way Glenn Frey - You Belong To The City Manfred Mann's Earth Band - The Runner I'd also like to know if this kind of music was still being made AFTER the 80's, and if there are any bands in existence that still produce this kind of sound. Thanks in advance!
  12. I have fond memories of the Commodore 64, but some of the games that were released on that system were just plain EVIL. Waiting ten minutes for a game to load and then losing all your lives within thirty seconds of starting it (sometimes even requiring you to rewind the tape and load everything again if it was a multiload game) could drive the most patient of people insane. Oh well, at least we were treated to some awesome SID tunes while waiting for the torture to start
  13. For me, playing 2D one-on-one fighting games is the most pleasant way to waste some time, because most can be completed in less than 15 minutes (if the last boss doesn't suffer from SNK Boss Syndrome that is). Also, some of those games literally take ages to master, so you keep coming back to them. I've mainly played Capcom fighters (Street Fighter Alpha series, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, Capcom vs SNK series, Marvel vs Capcom series, Darkstalkers series), but I'm no stranger to games like Guilty Gear and KOF. I'm currently playing Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower. Jedah rocks!
  14. Thanks for all the comments! I'm glad you guys liked it. Wow, you still remember that one? That's awesome I used to have a site where I stored all my Photoshop creations (such as that comic), but that site sadly doesn't exist anymore.
  15. Hi, I'm an amateur filmmaker and a big fan of classic video games, so last year I decided to combine my interests to create a short film named 'GAME OVER'. I wasn't completely satisfied with the end result though, so the last few weeks I worked very hard to change a lot of scenes and add more and more video game refererences. Now, my short film is finally finished the way it was intended to be. Here is the result: Here's the full list of video game references (*SPOILER WARNING*): - Pac-Man - Pong - Tetris - Space Invaders - Metal Gear Solid (sound effect) - Donkey Kong - Bubble Bobble - Mega Man - Kid Icarus - Sonic the Hedgehog - Q*Bert - Super Mario Bros. - Street Fighter - Mortal Kombat - Monty on the Run (soundtrack) If you liked this short film, you just MIGHT also like my other short films: Disco Invasion and Late For Work. You can find them here: http://youtube.com/user/romeomazzei1979 They don't have much to do with video games, but umm... there's a WICKED COOL NINJA in one of those films and umm... yeah.
  16. Interactive fiction? Cool! Respect +1 I once tried to create an interactive novel. Unfortunately, writing is not my strongest point
  17. So, anybody got some artwork to share that has something to do with videogames? Drawings, movies, anything...just post it here! Here's my contribution. It's a no-budget, one-man production I made last month: Short film: GAME OVER (videogame parody) I hope you like it!
  18. Another kinda crappy game I just remembered having is Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars (NOT Alex Kidd in Miracle World, 'cause that one rocked) for the Sega Master System. I'll let this screenshot speak for itself. Or what about Cyborg Justice for the Sega Genesis? A slow, ugly game with sluggish controls and absolutely no variety in gameplay. I tried to convince myself it was a good game.
  19. Vigilante for the Sega Master System was a very easy game with bad graphics and even worse collission detection. Somehow I liked it back then.
  20. My Hero for the Sega Master System was quite bad and the graphics were absolutely terrible (the main character looked like a zombie), but I still enjoyed playing it. WOAHHHH CHECK OUT THOSE MINDBLOWING GRAPHICS! Speaking of great graphics *cough*, does anybody remember Pit-Fighter? Yeah, it was quite awful (hideous animation, iffy controls, drab backgrounds, etc.) but I really liked it "back in the day" (I owned the Sega Genesis version). There was something incredibly satisfying about using a barrel or chair to crush the brains of thugs with names like "Heavy Metal" and "Mad Miles". Repeatedly performing Ty's double kicks to a gimp's face was also a high point. THE COLORFUL WORLD OF PIT-FIGHTER!
  21. I like this thread I study taekwondo, and before a sparring match starts I often joke around and do some poses from Street Fighter characters and/or yell stuff like "hadoken!" and "shoryuken!" (while doing those moves) to uhm...intimidate my opponents. Unsurprisingly, I get my ass kicked most of the time.

  23. I loved the Otakon podcast. It sounded like everybody was having a really good time. I listened to it at work and I got a few stares from my co-workers because I was smiling and giggling most of the time Having a crowd of videogame music fans chilling to those OC remixes must've been quite a cool experience! Oh yeah, I voted for you guys at www.podcastalley.com Keep up the good work!
  24. Great idea, I LOVE the Street Fighter soundtrack! Too bad I'm not a remixer. Anyway, I bet this project's gonna be awesome. Good luck and happy remixing to all of you!
