  1. Well, we're pretending that you're the Star since you volunteered, but it doesn't make a ton of difference in this case. If you want to just decide which of yours is better after the fact, I'm fine with that, just let me know so I can change the "sources" links.
  2. Why leave the third slot empty? I already voted, and didn't.
  3. He can write a solo up to a few measures long, but if there's more than that, yes, you have to write the parts.
  4. I'm doing orchestral with mostly strings and sampled guitar, does that count as something different? This is actually kind of creepy.
  5. Likewise. I don't get to start remixing for another 6 1/2 hours. Which I will spend trying to get Strago's theme to stop turning into "My Sharona" in my head.
  6. I'm anticipating a wide range in this regard. Amarant and Barrett; Beatrix and Kain; Lenna and Locke totally work. The others could be really tricky. I think Strago is going to come out pretty deformed in mine.I'm really glad this is a symmetrical compo, unlike the WCRG's. Both opponents will be in the same boat as far as source mismatch goes.
  7. Welp, round 1 is sure gonna be my last one. I mean to go out with a bang, though, and I'm getting better all the time, so Sixto, please be sure to kick my ass well and thoroughly.
  8. Not sure how that even helps you. Aside from the challenge of figuring out what one "job class" Sazh, Basch, or Hiryuu have, you'll have to be plenty creative to decide what, for instance, "blue mage music" even is without it just being Strago's theme. Also I will laugh very hard if you end up facing both Kain and Freya.
  9. Also a reminder: You should avoid using sound sampled directly from any Final Fantasy game. Firstly it makes a remix ineligible to be posted to OCR for legal reasons. Secondly... SquarEnix is really touchy about this stuff, and it's possible that if someone on their legal team discovers sampled sounds, they could make Brandon take down the whole compilation and could possibly give djprezel and co. a hard time about even having the link on their forums. So be safe, don't do it. Edit: @Brandon: I think you're preaching to the choir here. Templates and saved filter chains are great ideas if you're interested in replicating what you've done before. For folks like me, who've never come up with anything worth repeating, not so much. And anyone better than me already knows how to use these.
  10. Pairings shadow24 with Esperado. Sources: http://youtu.be/qA-bGE6ZFAk http://youtu.be/KF32DRg9opA Anorax with HeavenWraith. Sources: http://youtu.be/hqd9EsVlZAI http://youtu.be/YNGvBL8J_JU Trism with DusK. Sources: http://youtu.be/6LB7LZZGpkw http://youtu.be/glgnxgLTtRY Knock yourselves out. These pairings actually all sound really natural, you should have fun with it.
  11. Current signups: Trism: Silent Hill 2 - Theme of Laura Anorax: Mortal Kombat 2 - Screaming Forest Esperado: Perfect Dark - Chicago shadow24: Dark Souls - Moonlight Butterfly / Dark Sun Gwyndolin DusK: Aladdin (Genesis) - Boss Esperado: Duck Tales - The Moon HeavenWraith: Chip 'n' Dale's Rescue Rangers - Zone 0 shadow24: The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse - Dark Forest ATM Esperado will go into one category, and shadow24 in the other. Well, hopefully it will still be a learning experience. I think next time I do one of these mashup rounds, I'll just put both topics up and ultimately go with whichever arrangement is more popular. Definitely sounds like I could have gotten at least a couple more signups had I flipped the categories, but too late to do anything about it now.
  12. Ugh, I was hoping to have Sunday the weekend before Thanksgiving to work. I kind of hope I lose in round 1 now, or else I'll only have 2 evenings to work on round 2.
  13. I don't think anyone thinks you would cheat by actually sitting down with a DAW and working on it, but a few extra days to just have the two sources floating around in your head during your commute or shower might make the difference in having that one awesome inspiration that makes the whole thing gel.Edit: Hmm, why is Hiryuu beige? It's blue in the game.
  14. Hmm... I'd thought that the older, more experienced remixers would be more keen on the old-school Disney sources than the M-rated ones (which are generally newer), but I seem to have erred. Would there be more interest if I flipped them? Novices with Disney and Stars with M-rated games? If you're cool with that, please go ahead and post a source pick, in the end I'll go with whichever arrangement is more popular.
  15. I hope you aren't even thinking about your entry yet. You kind of have an advantage here, knowing your second source 4 days before your opponent does. Perhaps you should PM them to let them know and level the playing field?
  16. You mean this? (2:30) http://youtu.be/U60ad2wRYII?t=2m30sIf so, that's a slow remix of the Duck Tales TV show theme song and is thus ineligible per OCR general rules. Edit: If you want some excellent soundtracks to start with, I recommend the NES soundtracks to Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, and Tale Spin. Rescue Rangers is a personal favorite that didn't make it into the WCRG (especially the Capcom-eriffic Zone J). If this ends up being a collab thing with people who are more or less at the same skill level, then so be it. Not gonna cancel it this time.
  17. Looks like I have maybe a 50/50 chance at having a chance of surviving the first round, so that's good. Listening to the sources... this seems like it's going to be a lot harder than the Mega Man/Sonic/Street Fighter/etc. compos. Those all involved action-y sources within a fairly narrow range of intent. These range from ambient to epic to goofy. At least each opponent is in the same boat in this regard.
  18. There have been enough tournament-style compos over the last few years, and enough repeat participants, that doing a formal seeding process would be fairly feasible. This would also mean that the best remixers would last longer in the tournament (not going up against each other and being eliminated early on), so overall music quality would probably improve. On the other hand, that would automatically place me against someone much better than me, so go go random!
  19. I personally always thought of "Those Chosen by the Planet" as Sephiroth's "character" theme, while "One-Winged Angel" (and for that matter "Birth of a God") was his "boss theme," the same way that "Dancing Mad" was Kefka's "boss theme."
  20. How would that happen? In this case, even if B votes and votes for everyone but A (which is unlikely unless they're trying to game the system) and himself, A still wins (scores 16/15/13/9/4).Sadly, with MnP01 deleted I'm not sure who "received more votes than the others yet still lost," so I couldn't say what happened there. Sorry to not let this topic die, but right now, if there's a week in which I think I have a serious shot at winning, I won't vote, because it would only hurt.
  21. I'm not sure you see that this makes voting a disadvantage.Say there are four participants, A, B, C, and D. Before A and B vote, the scores happen to be the following: A: 7 B: 7 C: 5 D: 5 A thinks his is the best, but he can't vote for himself. He ranks the others B, C, D. B thinks A is also the best, but he also thinks A will get a lot of votes. He would ordinarily vote A, D, C but instead he abstains. Final results: A: 9 B: 10 C: 7 D: 6 B wins by merit of not voting. If B had voted (honestly), it would be: A: 12 B: 12 C: 8 D: 8 So his not voting not only robs A of a rightful tie, but affects D's placing as well.
  22. I know there are kind of a lot of compos going on or being organized right now, but I had a lot of people ask me about this one, and I promised. Also it's low-commitment and, for the Stars, doesn't take a ton of work.
  23. Season 2, Episode 3: Special "Wish on This!" edition! Current News Results are in! Results! There were two entries and two votes, one for each entry. So Esperado, shadow24, Trism, and DusK share victory, such as it is. Download Season 2 Now! Pairings Esperado with shadow24. Sources: http://youtu.be/UV3RC2sDwQs http://youtu.be/7Rt5yNN0zy8 Anorax with HeavenWraith. Sources: http://youtu.be/hqd9EsVlZAI http://youtu.be/YNGvBL8J_JU Trism with DusK. Sources: http://youtu.be/6LB7LZZGpkw http://youtu.be/glgnxgLTtRY Stars are for Shooting special edition Originally this was going to be a Mega Man/Sonic crossover special edition, but Darkesword and orlouge82 beat me to that one. So here's a little bit of no-hard-feelings-really payback. As with the last special edition, we're doing something a little different for signups. Stars, when signing up, should choose one source from any Disney video game. It doesn't matter what game or from what part of the game it comes with one special exception: games from the Kingdom Hearts series are allowed, but the source must come exclusively from one of the Disney worlds. If it plays at multiple points during the game, or in one of the generic areas, it's ineligible. Also, please obey the general OCR rule that the source has to have come from a video game first, not a remix or adaptation of music that originated in a movie or on TV. Sources are first-come, first served. If you change your mind, make a new post rather than editing your signup post. Novices, when signing up, should choose one source from any game rated "M" by the ESRB. Games that predate the ESRB but that would be no-brainers if rated (e.g. Mortal Kombat 1, Leisure Suit Larry 1) are also acceptable. Mixes will be similar to those in DarkeSword's tournaments: each mix should use a roughly equal blend of the source chosen by the Novice and the one chosen by the Star. Making them sound like one song instead of a medley is key! About ReMixing With the Stars ReMixing With the Stars is intended to give beginning remixers some support, encouragement, and mentoring in their quest to become great, and as a sidenote, to become posted remixers. Beginners are mentored by experienced remixers to push their abilities to new heights and submit collaborative works according to the theme of the month. Who's a "Star" and who's a "Novice?" Any posted or accepted-to-be-posted remixer, as the only artist or as the lead arranger on a piece, is automatically considered a "Star." This isn't meant to be a statement on who's a "good" or "expert" artist, but it's a somewhat meaningful threshold which doesn't require any subjective judgment on my part (however subjective the OCR judging process may be). Additionally, anyone who wants to sign up as a Star can also be put into that category. This is because a lot more "Novices" (who is everyone else) sign up than stars, and it's better to receive some mentoring from someone who's good but not posted than from no one at all. If you've done any of the following things, as examples, I strongly recommend you sign up as a Star: Contributed to an OCR album Had a submitted remix rejected but with one or more "Yes" votes Beat a posted remixer in direct competition (not counting forfeit) Sold your compositions (remixes or not) for money If you want to sign up conditionally (e.g. "I'd prefer to be a Novice, but if you need me to be a Star so more people can participate, that's fine too"), then go ahead, and bless you. If you do so for this episode, please choose both a source from a Disney game and an "M"-rated game. Rules Enrollment/Pairings: I'm scrapping the old system, it was unnecessarily complicated. Basically, once the signup deadline is reached, whichever list of signups has more people in it will be truncated, based on order of signup, so the lists are the same size. Mixes: The Novice must be the primary remixer. Stars can contribute by giving advice, playing a live instrument or vocals, and with production, including minor adjustments to fix timing or dissonance issues. They may also contribute a short solo segment. No one other than the Novice and Star may help in any way. Submissions: All entries must be sent to me by the 12PM PDT deadline via PM on the forums, with a link to a reliable host for me to download your mix from. Please don't use Tindeck, as it doesn't give you control over what the filename will be when downloaded. I also recommend you post in this thread that you've submitted your mix, since I know there have been issues in other compos with PM's not being received. Please submit your file as an mp3, preferably encoded at a high-quality VBR or 320kbps. Filenames must be in the following format: Novice feat. Star - Title (Game 1 and Game 2).mp3 Example: MindWanderer feat. djpretzel - Tricky Dick Mick (Mickey's Mousecapade and Leisure Suit Larry).mp3 Proper file names mean I can do my job of getting the compliation done and posted faster, which means you get to hear the great music produced by this sooner. Schedule All deadlines are 10 PM Pacific time (PST). Signups until Thursday, Nov. 7, 20:00 PST. If you're signing up as a Novice, and didn't sign up for a previous episode, you must post links to at least two samples of your previous work! They don't have to be good, they don't even have to be game remixes, you just have to prove you're not brand-spanking-new to this music production thing. Things you've posted to the WIP forum are preferable but not required. If you're signing up as a Star, say a little bit about your strengths, and maybe post a link or three to remixes you feel best represent them. You can mention anything else you think would be helpful in working with you (software preferences, instruments you play, etc). Announcement of the pairings on Nov. 7. ReMixing from Nov. 7 to Thursday, Nov. 21, 20:00 PST (2 weeks). Rules and guidelines above. Voting from whenever I get the compilation posted (should be no more than a few hours after the deadline) until Tuesday, Dec. 2, 20:00 PST. Votes should be based on, in roughly descending order, use of sources (i.e. interpreted but recognizable, with roughly equal use of both sources), arrangement, production, and enjoyability. You'll pick your three favorites, in order. Your first-place vote will get 3 points, your second-place 2 points, and your third-place 1 point. Participants (both Novices and Stars) may not vote for their own mixes, but participants who vote will get a free first-place vote added to their score. Please send me a PM with your votes, like this: 1. First-place ReMix 2. Second-place ReMix 3. Third-place ReMix Thanks for your interest, and lets get this show on the road! 24. I'm sure I'll get knocked out in round 1, but with luck I'll make someone really good make a mix using one of my picks. Which are: 1) Hiryuu (FFV) 2) Gilgamesh (FFV) 3) Vivi (FFIX) 4) Faris (FFV) 5) Cyan (FFVI) If Hiryuu or Faris is disallowed, just bump everything by a slot.
  25. Dude, you've only been recruiting for 6 hours, no need to expect it to fill up that fast! I'll throw in some choices in a bit, although I need to go through the spreadsheet, it doesn't seem to be all-inclusive. I notice offhand that Rachel, Rosa and half the FFV roster are missing; if Zorn and Thorn count, so should the Turks; if Chocobo and Moogles count, so should Boco and Hiryuu (which is badass). Anyway, if you leave recruitment open for a few days, I'm sure you'll reach 32.
