  1. How would that happen? In this case, even if B votes and votes for everyone but A (which is unlikely unless they're trying to game the system) and himself, A still wins (scores 16/15/13/9/4).Sadly, with MnP01 deleted I'm not sure who "received more votes than the others yet still lost," so I couldn't say what happened there. Sorry to not let this topic die, but right now, if there's a week in which I think I have a serious shot at winning, I won't vote, because it would only hurt.
  2. I'm not sure you see that this makes voting a disadvantage.Say there are four participants, A, B, C, and D. Before A and B vote, the scores happen to be the following: A: 7 B: 7 C: 5 D: 5 A thinks his is the best, but he can't vote for himself. He ranks the others B, C, D. B thinks A is also the best, but he also thinks A will get a lot of votes. He would ordinarily vote A, D, C but instead he abstains. Final results: A: 9 B: 10 C: 7 D: 6 B wins by merit of not voting. If B had voted (honestly), it would be: A: 12 B: 12 C: 8 D: 8 So his not voting not only robs A of a rightful tie, but affects D's placing as well.
  3. I know there are kind of a lot of compos going on or being organized right now, but I had a lot of people ask me about this one, and I promised. Also it's low-commitment and, for the Stars, doesn't take a ton of work.
  4. Season 2, Episode 3: Special "Wish on This!" edition! Current News Results are in! Results! There were two entries and two votes, one for each entry. So Esperado, shadow24, Trism, and DusK share victory, such as it is. Download Season 2 Now! Pairings Esperado with shadow24. Sources: http://youtu.be/6LB7LZZGpkw http://youtu.be/glgnxgLTtRY Stars are for Shooting special edition Originally this was going to be a Mega Man/Sonic crossover special edition, but Darkesword and orlouge82 beat me to that one. So here's a little bit of no-hard-feelings-really payback. As with the last special edition, we're doing something a little different for signups. Stars, when signing up, should choose one source from any Disney video game. It doesn't matter what game or from what part of the game it comes with one special exception: games from the Kingdom Hearts series are allowed, but the source must come exclusively from one of the Disney worlds. If it plays at multiple points during the game, or in one of the generic areas, it's ineligible. Also, please obey the general OCR rule that the source has to have come from a video game first, not a remix or adaptation of music that originated in a movie or on TV. Sources are first-come, first served. If you change your mind, make a new post rather than editing your signup post. Novices, when signing up, should choose one source from any game rated "M" by the ESRB. Games that predate the ESRB but that would be no-brainers if rated (e.g. Mortal Kombat 1, Leisure Suit Larry 1) are also acceptable. Mixes will be similar to those in DarkeSword's tournaments: each mix should use a roughly equal blend of the source chosen by the Novice and the one chosen by the Star. Making them sound like one song instead of a medley is key! About ReMixing With the Stars ReMixing With the Stars is intended to give beginning remixers some support, encouragement, and mentoring in their quest to become great, and as a sidenote, to become posted remixers. Beginners are mentored by experienced remixers to push their abilities to new heights and submit collaborative works according to the theme of the month. Who's a "Star" and who's a "Novice?" Any posted or accepted-to-be-posted remixer, as the only artist or as the lead arranger on a piece, is automatically considered a "Star." This isn't meant to be a statement on who's a "good" or "expert" artist, but it's a somewhat meaningful threshold which doesn't require any subjective judgment on my part (however subjective the OCR judging process may be). Additionally, anyone who wants to sign up as a Star can also be put into that category. This is because a lot more "Novices" (who is everyone else) sign up than stars, and it's better to receive some mentoring from someone who's good but not posted than from no one at all. If you've done any of the following things, as examples, I strongly recommend you sign up as a Star: Contributed to an OCR album Had a submitted remix rejected but with one or more "Yes" votes Beat a posted remixer in direct competition (not counting forfeit) Sold your compositions (remixes or not) for money If you want to sign up conditionally (e.g. "I'd prefer to be a Novice, but if you need me to be a Star so more people can participate, that's fine too"), then go ahead, and bless you. If you do so for this episode, please choose both a source from a Disney game and an "M"-rated game. Rules Enrollment/Pairings: I'm scrapping the old system, it was unnecessarily complicated. Basically, once the signup deadline is reached, whichever list of signups has more people in it will be truncated, based on order of signup, so the lists are the same size. Mixes: The Novice must be the primary remixer. Stars can contribute by giving advice, playing a live instrument or vocals, and with production, including minor adjustments to fix timing or dissonance issues. They may also contribute a short solo segment. No one other than the Novice and Star may help in any way. Submissions: All entries must be sent to me by the 12PM PDT deadline via PM on the forums, with a link to a reliable host for me to download your mix from. Please don't use Tindeck, as it doesn't give you control over what the filename will be when downloaded. I also recommend you post in this thread that you've submitted your mix, since I know there have been issues in other compos with PM's not being received. Please submit your file as an mp3, preferably encoded at a high-quality VBR or 320kbps. Filenames must be in the following format: Novice feat. Star - Title (Game 1 and Game 2).mp3 Example: MindWanderer feat. djpretzel - Tricky Dick Mick (Mickey's Mousecapade and Leisure Suit Larry).mp3 Proper file names mean I can do my job of getting the compliation done and posted faster, which means you get to hear the great music produced by this sooner. Schedule All deadlines are 10 PM Pacific time (PST). Signups until Thursday, Nov. 7, 20:00 PST. If you're signing up as a Novice, and didn't sign up for a previous episode, you must post links to at least two samples of your previous work! They don't have to be good, they don't even have to be game remixes, you just have to prove you're not brand-spanking-new to this music production thing. Things you've posted to the WIP forum are preferable but not required. If you're signing up as a Star, say a little bit about your strengths, and maybe post a link or three to remixes you feel best represent them. You can mention anything else you think would be helpful in working with you (software preferences, instruments you play, etc). Announcement of the pairings on Nov. 7. ReMixing from Nov. 7 to Thursday, Nov. 21, 20:00 PST (2 weeks). Rules and guidelines above. Voting from whenever I get the compilation posted (should be no more than a few hours after the deadline) until Tuesday, Dec. 2, 20:00 PST. Votes should be based on, in roughly descending order, use of sources (i.e. interpreted but recognizable, with roughly equal use of both sources), arrangement, production, and enjoyability. You'll pick your three favorites, in order. Your first-place vote will get 3 points, your second-place 2 points, and your third-place 1 point. Participants (both Novices and Stars) may not vote for their own mixes, but participants who vote will get a free first-place vote added to their score. Please send me a PM with your votes, like this: 1. First-place ReMix 2. Second-place ReMix 3. Third-place ReMix Thanks for your interest, and lets get this show on the road! 5. I'm sure I'll get knocked out in round 1, but with luck I'll make someone really good make a mix using one of my picks. Which are: 1) Hiryuu (FFV) 2) Gilgamesh (FFV) 3) Vivi (FFIX) 4) Faris (FFV) 5) Cyan (FFVI) If Hiryuu or Faris is disallowed, just bump everything by a slot.
  6. Dude, you've only been recruiting for 6 hours, no need to expect it to fill up that fast! I'll throw in some choices in a bit, although I need to go through the spreadsheet, it doesn't seem to be all-inclusive. I notice offhand that Rachel, Rosa and half the FFV roster are missing; if Zorn and Thorn count, so should the Turks; if Chocobo and Moogles count, so should Boco and Hiryuu (which is badass). Anyway, if you leave recruitment open for a few days, I'm sure you'll reach 32.
  7. I'm amused that if you search for "Chrono Trigger: Peaceful Days" on YouTube, the very first result is a fan sound upgrade.
  8. Now this, I don't understand.Say there's only me and one other contestant. If I vote, and I'm the only one who votes, what happens? 1) I get a first-place vote and 2 points. My opponent gets only a first-place vote. I win, 5-3. 2) I get only 2 points. My opponent wins, 3-2. 3) (Previous system, and the PRC rule) I get a first place vote, my opponent gets a first place vote. We tie, 3-3. I'll post my entry tonight.
  9. No, they get +3 because their first place vote gets 3 points, second place gets 2 points, and third place gets one point, and their bonus is equal to a first place vote. If there were 3 entries, they'd get 3 points, their first-place vote would get 3 points, and their second-place vote would get 2 points. If there are two entries, then voting is a wash.
  10. I can't actually find the scoring rules anywhere--is it supposed to be 3 points for 1st place, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd? If so, they still don't add up (I know I should be at 3+1+1+1+3=9), but it doesn't really matter once 1st place is determined. I think a first place vote for voting is critical. Without that, participants have an incentive to vote for themselves, or to not vote (if voting for themselves is disallowed). By giving a free first place vote for voting, everyone who is going to vote for themselves no matter what has to make 3 interesting choices instead of just 2, and those that don't are relieved of having to make the difficult choice to vote against their own baby. I find it very interesting how people interpreted the compo concept. Although I changed the instruments substantially, I felt like mine was still obviously Final Fantasy combat music, retaining the mood, tempo, and energy level. But obviously others disagreed.
  11. I've only ever used Reaper, but man has it crashed on me many, many times. Usually it's a specific plugin that causes it, but even besides that it usually crashes on me at least once every other day or so (@ 2-3 hours a day). It's probably the nature of the beast when using VST-based DAWs, 3rd-party compatibility issues and all.
  12. Yeah, the two of you should probably coordinate to stagger the timeframes. Also I think MnP has the more popular source this time--since the winner gets to pick the next round's theme, they'll probably start being more obscure personal favorites the same way PRC is.FYI, due to popular demand, I'll be restarting RMWtS up again next month. Schedule will be the same as before: enrollment in the first week of the month, remixing in weeks 2 and 3, voting week 4.
  13. Based on the other compos I've seen, I don't believe that any voting instructions make people vote differently than "completely subjective" anyway.
  14. I'd definitely appreciate that. If anything that would be more helpful than comments on a particular mix; I'm probably not going to revisit any of these mixes, I don't think any of them are good enough to try to improve them to the submittable level, but I can certainly try to improve myself as a whole.
  15. I personally think the synths in Cloudhopping are quite a bit better, the soundscape more robust, and the percussion and synth elements more dynamic (although I enjoy the arrangement of Moles more). I also think sometimes djp passes things he really likes that might not pass the judges' panel on technical merit. Either way the response will be enlightening. Also congrats, is that your first mixpost?
  16. It's borderline IMHO, and I'm actually still waffling over whether to add it to my permanent collection. We'll see what the judges have to say, but to my admittedly novice ear, some of the lead synths are a little tinny, and some of the mid-range frequencies step on each other in the more complicated sections. I'm glad you're subbing it, my suspicion is that it'll come back with a Resubmit and they'll be able to give you more precise feedback than I can.
  17. Now that everything is in, FWIW, I have a short list of remixes where I really enjoyed the arrangements but the production held them back. Here's the ones I would particularly love to see improved versions of: Space Pirate Attack Funky Moles & Trashy Ducks Lunar Storm Tempestuous In Everlasting Pieces Adventure of a Lifetime We're the Robutts! I also want to call out Blood of the Concrete Moon as one I'd love to see get some finishing treatment, not because the production wasn't amazing but because that piano solo is just way too long and breaks up the flow too much.
  18. I was going to, right after WCRG, but then HoboKa posted a new compo as well. I'll see how that goes for a little while before starting up yet another competing compo.

  19. So with this now confirmed... has there been any discussion of an OCR Mighty No. 9 album? Obviously the soundtrack hasn't been released yet, but my understanding is that OCR albums take a fair lot of organizing even before the mixing begins, and it would be cool to have an album out as soon as possible after the game's release. And I don't think it's conceivable that this game's music won't deserve an album.
  20. Well, usually my problem is being too quiet, so a little too loud is an improvement. There are actually either arps or pads throughout nearly all of the piece, but I guess either they're too quiet or their frequencies are getting drowned out in the harmonics of the other instruments. I overused the heck out of the Wily theme as an arp. I also think there's only maybe one or two places with both arp and pad at once. Since most of the leads and basses contained several layed voices, I was worried about a soundscape that was too busy, but I guess I was too conservative about that. Thanks for the feedback! At least someone is interested in helping me improve.
  21. Not to derail this fascinating conversation, but hey folks, some reviews would be nice. I'm not going to start sucking any less without some constructive criticism.
  22. Penultimate review time.... Liquid Metal 2 - Even Wetter: It's hard to review music in a genre you hate, so I'm trying to focus on arrangement and source usage. The arrangement is certainly a lot of fun, but source usage is mainly of the A-B-A-B variety, and Proto Man is basically just a couple of cameos (much less present than Splash Woman--and I'm still not clear on what she's doing there at all). Archetype Stone: Finally a mix that makes heavy use of Stone Man!.. but then that's all it does. It's basically a Stone Man cover until 1:26 and from 2:04 to the end, and if the rest is Wily or Proto Man, I can't tell. I'm honestly surprised this is getting as many votes as it is; even though it's well-produced, it doesn't seem to meet the mission statement. Waterfall's Return: There are a lot of clashing notes here. That super-long sustained chord gets old fast, and is way too loud. Everything else is pretty quiet, and gets increasingly drowned by the sustain. I have a feeling this was an editing error of some sort. And then of course it isn't finished. Komo Sanctu et Shadedog Morientia: A lot of the parts are pretty quiet, but this is a good arrangement that makes excellent integrated use of all three sources. Couple minor timing issues in places. Instrumentation isn't the best at all times. It does get a little repetitive by the end. Ending is a little abrupt. But really the only major thing holding this back is volume levels/EQ. Circuit Breaker: Hmm, I think Gario may have had more than a little to do with this one. Great frantic 9-bit stuff, just what I look forward to from him. Wankery from 1:42 to 2:05 is stellar (and I believe I hear mainly SuperiorX's musical style here). Tasteful use of SFX. Good coverage and integration of all three sources, although I can tell you had to think pretty hard about how to work Duo in, you succeeded well. Quite possibly my favorite piece of the whole compo, and the easiest first-place vote for me so far. Slash Through Space and Destroy: Definitely incomplete. The basic drums barely vary, production could be better, and the sources are basically just used in sequence. Slash man is once again significantly altered, to the point where I'm not even sure that's what I'm hearing. My Wily Valentine: Another music reference I don't know? I'm sure I'd give this more credit if I knew what you were trying to imitate here. Seems like there are a few flat notes on the second guitar. Arrangement mostly just alternates between the three sources, though it does so in a very consistent, cohesive style; second guitar does some layering of Wily under Solar Man (very similar to the way I did it), but it does so when the lead guitar is really wailing, so it took me a few listens before I heard it.
  23. Thank you, I was wracking my brain trying to figure out what language "Komo" could possibly come from. I gathered it meant roughly "Regarding that which is sacred, and the dying Shadedog," based on the Latin, which seemed appropriate for a final entry.
  24. What is "video game style music?" I can't think of very many music styles that aren't represented in video games.
  25. Well, Capitals of Science is in this week. Based on the feedback of my colleagues, I'm afraid I will not be presenting aggressive klesmer-step, but I think it's a reasonably strong entry nonetheless.
