  1. Mute City? I think I've heard this before. Pretty basic interpretation, muddy production. As larry advised, this needs to be taken in a new direction, and given some more interesting beats and/or motifs. Not terrible, but nowhere near the bar yet. NO RESUBMIT
  2. Hey, Radiohead called. They want their ending back. YES Too creative for me not to pass. There were a couple parts where I felt like the drums were detracting from the melody, but that's my only major gripe. Pretty decent stuff Suzumememzumabachilachi.
  3. What darkesword said completely summarizes my thoughts. I don't feel the need to reiterate them. NO
  4. This is well executed. The combination of various sonic elements ends up sounding very nice. Karl's piano work is great, as always, and the guitar (plus backwards guitar) works nicely. The melodic and harmonic elements of this piece are top notch. As TO mentioned, the rhythm section is really subdued (except for one section), but that's not neccesarily a bad thing. Me likey. YES
  5. i'm not wowed by either the arrangement or the production, but in the end, the combination of the two puts this over my interpretation of the "bar." Could this be better? Sure, but I don't have any problems passing it. Looks like its going to tie-breaker. YES
  6. Man, I remember this song. Always used to fill me with a sense of foreboding, i.e. I hated this section of the game. You actually made me enjoy this theme, so props on that. The percussion is definitely weird, but it works for me. I guess I don't have anything else to add. Nice work. YES
  7. is that really the best take you could get on that flute solo? other than that, this is pretty good, especially from a composition standpoint. i really dig the harpsichord and (what sounds like) piano voicings in the background. over the bar as far as i'm concerned, but i wish you would've kicked it off better. whatever. YES
  8. Are you familiar with the concept of improvising? Good God, people. I explained why, you filth! generally, the purpose of an improvised solo is not to "integrate" with the main melodic theme of the source. My solos in LftY, Silent Progression, and Flood Plain had very little to do with the original melodies, and that was never brought up as an issue.
  9. Are you familiar with the concept of improvising? Good God, people. YES
  10. Yeah, I can see why you'd wanna uninstall all the default games, what with all the disk space they take up. Larry, you're a strange kid. Anyway, on to the mix... Brendan, I feel like I should apologize for the fact that this judging thread is focused on either Larry or Space Cadet Pinball itself, as opposed to your remix. That isn't right. The track sounds alright, but you need to branch out a little more. This is way too close to the original. Spend some more time with it. Make it your own. NO
  11. little to no arrangement, bad sequencing. hate to be glib but NO
  12. this works. good groove, good arrangement decent production (though I agree with Vig that the mixing could be better). maybe it's my ridiuclously large and unfair bias towards electronica that i carry as an OCR judge, but i'm gonna give this a YES
  13. i find myself in agreement with vig, larry, and zircon. for being just shy of 6 minutes, the arrangement says way too little. good atmosphere, and it sounds nice, it could just use some more love on the arrangement end. i'm not going to tell you how to ReMix/arrange, but I will say that if this were my piece, I would trim the more repititive sections down and add some more layers to keep the momentum up. NO RESUBMIT
  14. this isn't a bad interpretation of the source. why anyone would want to interpret this source makes no sense to me, but i guess that's besides the point. as Larry said, there's some good ideas here, but the samples aren't great, and the overall production is lacking. the beats are okay, but the piano is both awful in terms of sound quality and sequencing. if you're planning on a resubmit, i would scrap the piano all together and come up with something new. either that or find a better sample and spend a LOT more time tweaking it to fit with the other elements of the mix. this could get over the bar if you work hard enough. oh, and i did appreciate the "almost famous" reference. NO RESUBMIT
  15. these samples hurt. piano and acoustic drum kit sound straight up General MIDI. all the transitions are awkward, and the absence of a bassline for 95% of the mix makes no sense to me. this feels aimless, and though you've got the right idea with the drum fills, the samples you're using just sound silly. especially the toms. this mix has a long way to go from both a production and arrangement standpoint. NO
  16. yeah, the blend between live and synthetic instruments is pretty awkward. once the banjo takes over for the glockenspeil(sp?) it sounds like we're in a completely different song. the fadeout ending is a copout. honestly, there are some great ideas here, but the overall presentation just doesn't do it for me. work on eq'ing those live instruments, and making your samples sound a little more organic. the arrangement is fine as far as i'm concerned. nothing too daring, but there's also a lot of creative ideas and personal touches that are easy for the listener to pick up on. finally, intonation also needs some work. NO RESUBMIT
  17. this just sounds too fake. hopefully you can get your school orchestra to record this, and get a decent recording of it as well. if that doesn't happen, you're going to need to either step up the samples, or work on the notation and production, especially when the solo strings are exposed. NO
  18. i've listened to this a couple times. this is about as borderline as borderline gets for me, but as i have before, i'm going to stick to my arrangebias, and not let one or two cheesy samples spoil the soup for me. the orchestration is very well thought out, and as vig mentioned, very uncluttered. as far as i'm concerned, this passes. YES
  19. the tuning is a problem for me, but even before the votes started rolling in, i knew I'd pass this. creative, ethereal, and slightly weird. this is classic zyko, and it'd be a shame to forgo this one. YES
  20. reveeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb the mixing is very wet, almost to a distracting level. that's what sticks out to me most. other than that, solid arranging, solid playing, and pretty good production. this sounds like music that would run during the credits of a late 90's made-for-tv action movie. does that make any sense? no? well, anyway YES EDIT: I can't believe you didn't even MENTION that you took that opening riff from the David Crowder Band. That's poor form.
  21. Badly processed synth guitar, weak transitions, hardly any arrangement. Where's the bassline? I can hear that you added a low synth string near the end, but that whole section makes music theory cry. I'm sorry man, but this isn't gonna cut it. 1:22? You'd have to absolutely kill both production and arrangement to get a mix this short passed, and even then it'd be a bit of a stretch. This is severly lacking in both those areas though, so length isn't really your biggest problem. NO p.s. I'm sorry about the harshness of this review, but i want to clearly convey that you'll need to improve dramatically as both a songwriter and producer if you want to get a mix on OCR. My advice is to spend some time in the WIP forums and hone your skills. Good luck.
  22. YES do we really need a whole revote on this? whatever, this is well above the bar.
  23. this is good. there's no reason for me to pretentiously disect why this is good. lush, dynamic, and emotive, this is a fully realized orchestral mix. why isn't this a direct post? YES
